Watch Matt Welch on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher Tonight at 10 PM ET
Oregon shooting, Planned Parenthood, Iran nukes, plus Richard Dawkins and Neil deGrasse Tyson!

At 10 p.m. tonight I'll be making my third appearance on HBO's political comedy show Real Time with Bill Maher, where I and co-panelists Adam Gopnik (staff writer for The New Yorker) and Angela Rye (Democratic political strategist) are scheduled to discuss the Oregon shooting, the Iran nuclear deal, Kevin McCarthy's Benghazi problem, Planned Parenthood, competing GOP tax plans, Obama vs. Putin, and more. Other guest on the show include fun-loving atheist Richard Dawkins, and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Should be a hoot!

Sure sounds like a hoot, but I'm gonna pass this time. Who would willingly spend time watching a bunch of douchebags sitting around gabbing about stuff?
"....but enough about 'Sunday NFL Countdown!...."
Dawkins, Maher, and Tyson. The smug in that room will be off the charts. I pity you, Matt.
Jesus. I was about to say exactly the same thing.
Maher is tough to sit through, but I did enjoy it that one time Gillespie was on the show and stomped a verbal mudhole in the mayor of some dying town in... Pennsylvania I think it was.
Braddock. Shithole. Good place to get shot. The mayor was a fat fuck who went to Harvard or something. I wonder if he's still around.
He is still around, and he is still a douche.
He looks like a gangbanger.
That was pretty good. "I'm the mayor of the poorest town in Pennsylvania."
Gillespie: "You must be so proud."
That was fucking amazing.
"I'm the mayor of the poorest town in Pennsylvania---"
"Oh, you must be very proud."
"No, uh (derp brain thinks about it for a few seconds) Hey, you want to take a step outside?"
And then Maher spent time accusing Nick of being a Republican instead of talking about rationale thoughts. Nick's trying to have a discussion, and still all Maher can think about is TEAM."
Penn Jillette tells a story about going on Bill Maher's show, and before the show, he said something like, "Boy, you always have one nut on your show, but it looks like you don't have anyone in the nut chair tonight." And Bill Maher just stared at him for a while until Penn got it.
So, enjoy, Matt.
Yeah, Matt is clearly the token in that bunch.
Does he have to wear a t-shirt with a "T" on it?
If he's lucky.
Douchelava.
And his movie 'Religiousity' was just as insipid as the man.
Is he as bad as Stewart in terms of editing and making sure the guests play their part in making the host look like a genius?
The show's live.
Enjoy the seals then as Rhywun mentions.
I can't digest any of these shows. You're a bigger, better man.
Besides, tonight I'm out with the boys from my banking days. A few of us still get together every couple of months for a good 15 years now.
The audience of trained seals play that role.
I have it on good authority that Matt will be set up with a live feed informing him what is being posted in the Reason comment section while he's on the show, so he can deftly maneuver through "real time" reactions and work the "Libertarian Moment" into the format with none the wiser.
Of course, you'll have to watch the show to see if my information is correct.
/Matt, I expect my payment to be wired to the usual account.
Gopnik wrote some Fuzzy-Wuzzy "Feels" boilerplate about Gun Control when the louisiana movie theater shooting happened
"The one thing we know for certain is that consciousness has to change before laws do. When one sees, with each new senseless gun massacre, the President himself passing from gravity to piety to heartbreak to something more like quiet smoldering indignation, then one might take heart even after one's own soul drops at the latest news of a mini-massacre. ... During his Presidency, he's gone from a kind of rote acknowledgment of the issue to a deeply felt recognition of its centrality, if only because it represents not a problem that is insoluble in its nature but something stupidly simple and easy to fix. In any sane polity, gun killings would be a horror, not a habitual event. Seeing the President's metamorphosis suggests that, as another old song had it, a change is going to come."
re: this idea that Gun Control is "stupidly simple and easy to fix"
really does require nailing the fancy-ass journalist to the wall, asking = HOW DOES THAT WORK?

Oh, my mind wasn't changing about gun laws... until I saw what it was doing to Our President. Then I had to give in and agree to some compromises, for His sake.
Seems like our polity needs to find a new populace, then.
Look, I don't see why it's sooo difficult for libertardians to admit that the world was much safer when all we had to worry about was groups of young ronin trained in the arts of spear warcraft descending on our village and taking half the crops while raping any females they wanted. Guns created an atmosphere of egalitarian violence where the weak could stand up against the strong; aren't libertardians supposed to be opposed to egalitarianism in all its forms?
Guns ruined a good thing by making defense of person and community a matter of relatively inexpensive technology rather than age, numbers, and exhaustive physical training.
*SPOILER ALERT*
Matt's the designated Republican tonight because he'll join Maher is dissing the NRA.
Didn't Maher talk up his personal gun ownership recently?
So is the Cocktail party before or after the show?
It's that period of time (very soon after a shooting) where the emoting will still be at unbelievably high levels and you will always be wrong no matter what. Matt, prepare for the worst. It's going to suck.
Pfft, Maher. His New Rules are no match for New No-Nos.
Ha! Make me.
So for those of us without HBO...how'd it go?
So for those of us without HBO...how'd it go?
Why don't you repeat yourself again?
