New Daily Show Host Admits to Political "Romance" with Rand Paul
Trevor Noah finds Rand Paul refreshingly "sane."
Jon Stewart may have been on balance an aggravation to many libertarians (though, as I reported in my book Ron Paul's Revolution, Stewart was better and more respectful on the Ron Paul Issue during the 2012 campaign than any other major media figure).
But Stewart's replacement as host of the comedy/news commentary program Daily Show on Comedy Central, who debuts on Monday, Trevor Noah, is out and proud with his deep and so far not even very conflicted love for GOP presidential candidate and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, the Daily Beast reports today:

"There are certain issues that I've seen, let's say, from Rand Paul where I go, 'Yeah, I like that,' and I think that we can move forward in that regard. When it comes to Social Security reform, and looking at different ways to adjust benefits for people, there's definitely a conversation to be had there. Now, I'm not an expert in it…But I believe progression can come from both sides."
Despite Paul's lackluster standing and poll numbers in the 2016 primary, Noah says it was the senator's two debate performances thus far that impressed him so much. "He was saying things that were sane at the debates, he really was," Noah said, referring, in part, to Paul's less "knee-jerk," neoconservative, invasion-happy approach to foreign policy. "He wasn't gung-ho. He did seem thoughtful. And that is progression for me. And maybe that's a tiny step in the right direction."
(When asked about Noah's comments, Paul spokesman Sergio Gor told The Daily Beast simply that Paul is "uniquely positioned to grow the GOP tent by attracting new voters and we welcome them all," and that Paul would be open to appearing on the new latest incarnation of The Daily Show.)….
A Daily Show colleague sitting near Noah at Friday's event chuckled, and warned him that soon the day will come when Paul does something to "break your heart," as all politicians are prone to do.
"I don't know all of Rand Paul, and that's what is gonna be fun," Noah replied. "But at this point, the romance is real. And I will embrace it as such."
Alas, according to the show's website, the first GOP candidate to actually appear on the show will be New Jersey strongman Chris Christie.
Noah has already been the target of some progressive ire for past tweets seen as insensitive to women and Jews. It will be interesting to see if this stance on Rand Paul will lose him even more love of old Stewart fans, or help normalize Rand Paul to hip progressives.
Me last year on the qualities that make Paul interesting even to people who identify as "progressive" (though not necessarily like a leftist political progressive!) such as Noah.

I sometimes wondered if this were because Ron Paul got under the skin of people like John Boehner, so you know, the enema of my enema kind of thing...
That and Stewart knew he didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of actually winning. You can bet that if Paul had ever looked like he might win the nomination, it would have been "OMGZ RACISTY NOOZLETTERZ!!1!!11!!!!!!!!eleventy!!!" every night.
Could they have picked a worse replacement?
Yes.
Huh, overdone eye makeup worked wonders.
Paul,
What do think Crusty might write after seeing that photograph?
*shudder*
Paul,
I offer a complete and utter retraction, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you, or your family, or your friends and associates, or those whom you dislike maybe just a little (or a lot), and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such inference at any time in the future.
Would that I could erase my question from your and other's perceptions,
I am,
Charles
I have never been so insulted. A bridge too far!
More like, a tattooed potato too far
(that's right, I pulled a Notorious and responded to my own post).
I respond to my own posts. I like to have intelligent responses to the brilliant things I post.
I couldn't agree more!
Oh, that's right. She's supposedly a comedian.
"Maher! Remember your failure with Maher!"
Huh, maybe the Daily Show won't be as much of a shit show as it was. Doubtful, they still have the same writers, after all, but maybe the new guy won't be quite as punchable as Stewart was.

I guess Cavuto didn't make the major media figure-cut.
I recall a co-worker remarking with some surprise at Cavuto's lack of hostility given what everyone in our workplace had been seeing from "major media" interviewers.
It seemed to me that Stewart and Colbert, for whatever reasons, were also generally non-hostile.
Perhaps they were catering to the popularity that (Ron) Paul had at the time.
"Noah has already been the target of some progressive ire for past tweets seen as insensitive to women and Jews."
Totally insensitive.
Almost as bad as SouthPark.
Do you even PC, bro?
So Noah is cool with "adjusting" Social Security (means testing? levying the payroll tax above the current limit?) and less sabre rattling (at least as standard-issue Republicans would go about it).
Has he taken a peek at Rand Paul economic policy yet?
Even if Rand wins the GOP nomination, Noah will support the Dem in 2016, they always do.
....
What do you mean by "they"?
Black people.
Progressives. I don't see people in terms of race, like Harold Falcon does.
Is that last sentence a sentence?
He might have used "My article" in place of "Me" to make the sentence less confusing.
