Kasich: Drug Freedom Confuses Kids So You Can't Have Any
Governor opposes marijuana legalization, but may allow federalist experiments as president.

Politicians say so many remarkably stupid things about marijuana and drug use in general. Let's not try to rank how poorly GOP presidential hopeful and Ohio Gov. John Kasich's approaches legalization and just shoot down the dumb things he says. He sat down for an interview with Michigan's MLive. His home state is considering marijuana legalization, and he tells MLive it's a terrible idea:
"It sends mixes messages to young people about drugs," Kasich told MLive.com on Tuesday as he wrapped up a two-day swing through Michigan. "I don't think we should do that. We need to tell young people to stay off drugs."
Kasich acknowledged the distinction between marijuana and harder drugs like heroin but suggested that legalization could cloud the issue for young people.
"So some drugs are okay but others aren't? We've got kids. Why don't we just say don't do drugs, period," Kasich said.
It's kind of a one-two punch of poorly thought-out, inane reactions that are countered remarkably easily. First, we allow adults to consume alcohol and cigarettes and not kids. To the extent that "mixed messages" are being sent, we're already sending them. And that's not even getting into the absurdity of legally curtailing the freedom of adults to control what they put into their bodies on the basis of how minors will interpret it.
Second, we already live in a culture where "some drugs are okay but others aren't." Check out a pharmacy sometime, why don't you?
So what would Kasich do, as president, if the voters in states overruled him and legalize marijuana anyway? He doesn't appear to be certain:
"I would try to discourage the states from doing it," Kasich said when asked how he would respond if elected president. "Hopefully we'll defeat it in Michigan and Ohio, but if states want to do it … I haven't made a final decision, but I would be tempted to say I don't think we can go and start disrupting what they've decided."
That position would put Kasich in line with a handful of other presidential candidates who have expressed personal opposition to marijuana legalization but indicated they would not interfere with state policy.
Jacob Sullum documented the other candidates' stances on marijuana legalization here. Kasich is hedging, but most candidates support federalist experimentation, even if they personally oppose legalization.
Sullum has also written about Ohio's marijuana legalization initiative, which has other problems besides Kasich's opposition, such as the creation of a small government-authorized cartel of legal growers. Read more here.

In which John Kasich came out in favor of the criminalization of caffeine.
Kasich is such a fuckin idiot that If he wins the presidency I'm leaving the United States. (Not much to worry about here)
"So some drugs are okay but others aren't? We've got kids. Why don't we just say don't do drugs, period," Kasich said.
Same thing with Coen brothers movies. I mean, O Brother, Where Art Thou was okay, but Fargo definitely wasn't. So let's ban them all.
That's dumb; maybe even dumber.
That's not the Coen brothers. That's the Ferrelly bros.
Well, they are dumb, too.
Brothers suck - ban all movies made by someone who's a brother!
Wait, that came out wrong...
Um..
No, they are both Coen brothers' pictures.
Ferrelly bros brought us "There's Something About Mary", "Dumb and Dumber" and a bunch of there shitty moview.
Sorry!! I didn't get the "Dumb and Dumber" joke from the post above you!
NEVER MIND!
I expect this from Nicole, but not from you.
I was around 16, sat down to watch a VHS copy of Fargo lent to me, caught myself reading a book midway through the movie and gave up. I've tried again since, with little more success.
DO A SEARCH ON KASICH AND FARGO IF YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW THE STORY. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I forgot all about this. What a fucking holier than thou douche. If you don't like the fucking movie, then write about it, tell your friends boycott the Coen brothers. But don't try to use the force of government to push your puritan agenda.
I disagree, Fargo was awesome.
OT: Tom Brady Wins Deflategate Suspension Appeal Against NFL
Does this strike anyone else as a judicial overreach?
Depends on the contract. But probably.
Why do you think so?
Just read the opinion. The NFL got its ass handed to itself.
"So some drugs are okay but others aren't? We've got kids. Why don't we just say don't do drugs, period," Kasich said."
I see a drinking game right here that could keep you drunk for months!
The author writes "we allow adults to consume alcohol and cigarettes and not kids."
That is true; to our credit we do not allow adults to consume kids.
Tell me about it.

"It sends mixes messages to young people about drugs,"
Because, hey, lying about drugs has been such a success in reducing their abuse.
I guess he means like the messages that it will make us insanely crazy and kill people and cause black men to rape our pure white women.
I smoked pot on a daily basis way back there in 1979. I figured out that getting high on pot is a one-time-per-day experience. As a psychedelic stimulant there is no way you can stay high on it. Pot is LSD-lite. Sativa, not Indica.
So anywayz, I watched this kid eat a square-inch of orange sunshine. He had been building up to this over some months. He didn't freak out but he went home to mom.
I watched this kid eat a square-inch of orange sunshine
Yikes!
Hmm - disagree. We used to sometimes smoke before school, then during school, then certainly after school. So high at least three separate times during the day.
But I know what you mean in one sense - MJ AIN'T acid. Holy shit - two hits of windowpane and the Stones concert in....'81 or '82. I could see individual peoples' feature on the other side of the Silverdome. It was pretty cool....but I didn't come down till the next morning.
I too used to smoke pot a lot since the early 70s and I figure......uh.....what was the question again?
ooooooo, chips a hoy......
Agreed wholeheartedly. If we could only persuade blowhards like Kasich to say "no" to insulin and nitroglycerin, we could eliminate a lot of morons in short order.
"Why don't we just say don't do drugs, period."
Um, cause I LIKE doing drugs, and have not discouraged my kids, who all made their own choices?
child protective services is gonna get you...
All parents should smoke pot, and tell their kids to smoke pot and the rebellious little bastards will defy us and not smoke pot, 1 because we tell them to, and 2 because their old out of step parents do .
Legalizing marijuana would be the best way to curb the use of hard drugs. Marijuana is everywhere, and dealers in illegal marijuana often deal in other illegal drugs or know people who do. Whereas a peddler of legal pot is about as likely to refer someone to a cocaine or heroin dealer as someone behind the counter of a liquor store. Marijuana is a gateway alright: A gateway to the black market. Make it legal and that gateway will snap shut.
The main thing it will curtail is the manufacture and use of designer drugs that mimic pot. Krokodil, a redesigned form of desomorphine was created in russia to give a cheaper alternative to heroin. If drugs were legal, it would have been cheaper and easier to get and the need for mimicking drugs would be virtually non existent. The prohibitionists don't see this but think pot is a logical conclusion of pot.
Kasich may be the single worst GOP candidate. Certainly the worst in the "top tier". I don't care what he says about drugs.
Doubt it. Just took a presidential preferences quiz. Kasich came in 9th out of 24. Top three:
Rand Paul 81%
Rick Perry 78%
Carly Fiorina 76%
Bottom 3:
Biden, Sanders and Clinton all at around 20%
Of course, it rated that insane idiot Trump in the dead center of the pack at 13, so maybe the questions didn't ask "is this candidate sane?"
That, and the bias of leaving all the LP candidates off the quiz.
People are freaking out about Pornhub offering to give a scholarship to college students, which led to a Breitbart article that contains some of the greatest quotes I have ever heard.
Philanthropic arm of the pron site.
OH NO
That website isn't going anywhere. I view a world where it offers a scholarship to college students as better than one in which it does not. People like Dawn Hawkins can go to hell.
If it really cared, it would stop producing porn which is leading to the public health crisis now facing our nation with increased demand for sex trafficking, increased child exploitation and violence against women, and increased sexual dysfunction among young men, among many others," she *FANTASIZED*
Oh, for pete's sake! What drivel.
...and increased sexual dysfunction among young men
I'm guessing Dawn isn't getting any. Maybe that's a little cruel and misogynistic, but when women in the 'fucking age' range, start railing against pron, that's just what someone is going to conclude.
Crisis, do you hear me? CRISIS! I INSIST THAT IT IS A ***CRISIS***!
I can't even type that with a straight face.
So is this like a scholarship for doing porn? Dare Dorm was sort of something similar.
Fuck it. I'm going full Trump. Trump2016: "Actually, It Could Be Worse."
"So some drugs are okay but others aren't? We've got kids. Why don't we just say don't do drugs, period," Kasich said."
I agree. We should totally encourage are kids not to do drugs. Most are harmful to one's health, others turn you into a giggling obnoxious twit.
What we should NOT do is throw people in prison for nonviolent acts that affect only themselves.
Condemning an activity does not necessitate criminalizing it.
I would be tempted to say I don't think we can go and start disrupting what they've decided
Can we get a clarification here? Who's the we and who's the they? Is he speaking as a hypothetical president and saying that we the feds can't go disrupting what they the states have decided or is he speaking as the very real opposed-to-drug-legalization governor and saying we the states can't go disrupting what they the feds have decided? (The question would indicate it's the first, except that the question is addressed to a politician and there's therefore no reason to believe the answer has any connection whatsoever to the question. To pin them down, you gotta rephrase their answer in the form of a question asking them "Is this what you're saying?" and then try to get a simple "yes" out of them.)
I'm guessing this is part of the reason my candidate preference survey put Kasich next-to-last ahead of only O'Malley. If the survey says I would prefer Hillary to this guy, this guy's really bad.
"So some drugs are okay but others aren't?"
"I challenge you to name just *one* drug that is okay!"
The ones that mother gives you.
(They don't do anything at all...)
So there is a move in Michigan and Ohio? Anyone know where else things are picking up steam? Virginia? Maryland?
Check out a pharmacy sometime, why don't you?
Statists only like you taking a drug if they're sure you won't enjoy it.
We'd all be better off if the police would focus on crimes that have actual victims.
Does anyone, other than those who pad their pockets from prohibition, honestly believe that wasting $20 Billion and arresting 3/4 Million Americans annually for choosing a substance scientifically proven to be safer than what the govt allows, is a sound policy?

Who's got time to smoke that much weed?
So I assume from Kasich's idiotic rhetoric that he wants alcohol banned too. How the hell did he make it to the main stage? As long as the GOP carries on the War on Drugs, Women and Gays, they will continue to lose. Republicans are so fuckin stupid!
