What's Behind the Jacked-Up Egg Prices and Shortages?
Avian flu is not the only explanation.

Panda Express' fast-food Chinese offerings may not be the most authentic choices out there, and now they're going to be slightly less so. Thanks to a current massive egg shortage, Panda Express has dropped the eggs out of its fried rice and replaced it with corn. From CNN:
That's not the only change. The company explained, "We take the health and safety of our guests seriously, and due to a temporary industry-wide egg shortage, Panda has temporarily modified our fried rice recipe and temporarily discontinued hot-and-sour soup."
Across the country, the cost of eggs, especially those in liquid form, are up because of the recent bird flu outbreak.
The flu outbreak has killed off more than 48 million chickens in the first half of the year. It contributed to eggs reaching a record high price of $2.57 a dozen in June. Prices are expected to go up again in the fall.
But the flu outbreak isn't the only factor reducing egg availability and driving up prices. At the start of the year, Proposition 2 in California went into effect. That ballot initiative requires chicken farmers to increase the size of chicken cages so that the hens could move around more. The rules aren't restricted to California farms, either. Farmers in other states that want to sell their eggs to California also have to comply, a demand that has prompted lawsuits from outside states. So far a federal judge in California has ruled that the states lacked standing to sue on behalf of the farmers within those states.
As predicted by anybody with half a brain, the new rules were already driving up the price of eggs and cutting supply. According to Fox's San Diego affiliate, one farmer has had to cut back the number of chickens in one building from 5,000 to 2,000 to comply with the law. A dozen eggs in California cost more than in other states, pushing a dozen up to $4.99 in some places.
It's easy to imagine that those who have pushed so hard for this regulation either don't consume eggs for moral reasons or live comfortable enough lifestyles that they can afford to be more discerning ethical consumers of what they put in their bodies. But obviously the people being most harmed by this price spike are the poor who discover a basic food staple is now consuming more of their limited budgets. The impact of the flu would have resulted in a spike anyway, but at least that's just temporary.

#internetconfessions I buy some fucking retardedly expensive eggs
I usually get vegetarian fed free range chicken eggs, but I don't expect everyone else be forced to buy them.
I am always confused by this vegetarian feed thing. Better chicken eggs come from birds eating bugs and worms - are those things excluded? Does it just mean they are getting corn thrown at them?
It just means no animal by products are fed to them. I like getting eggs from my mom's chickens best because they just roam around eating whatever comes natural.
I've never understood why that is supposed to be a good thing either. The really good, farmyard eggs are so good because the chickens eat lots of bugs and stuff. I suppose that really isn't a viable way to feed them in a commercial production facility, but I don't really see what the problem would be with feeding them some sort of animal based feed as part of their diet either.
It raises the cholesterol level in the eggs when chickens are fed meat by products, so veg diet hen eggs are suppose to be lower in cholesterol.
Ah. That brings up another thing I have a hard time finding a clear answer to. It dietary cholesterol intake really bad for you? I thought people had decided that it really doesn't have much to do with your blood cholesterol levels.
dietary cholesterol intake really bad for you?
Not at all. I eat at least 4 eggs every day and shrimp on a regular basis. I slather butter all over everything. Eat lots of meat, etc. I recently got blood work done and my cholesterol is 156, LDL and triglycerides are at the lower ends of their good ranges.
Except now we're starting to find out that blood cholesterol levels are pretty much unrelated to dietary intake of cholesterol.
I've heard that. I have borderline cholesterol and my levels dropped when I quit eating red meat and exercised more. It could be more the exercise than the diet.
It's definitely the exercise more than the diet.
Eggxactly.
*throws egg at Crusty*
Wow - Swiss is RICH! He can just throw expensive eggs all over the place!
Which makes a fair amount of sense. Your body metabolizes fats etc down to a limited number of fatty acids and glycerol in your gut (i.e. before anything remotely approaching synthesis takes place).
Cholesterol synthesis in the body is a complex process, and current research is apparently focused on what impacts the synthesis process (and explicitly, not the metabolites from digestion themselves) - which recognizes that after your gut has done with it, all that animal fat you ate is really just a soup of 10-12 common fatty acids that get used as the very first step in that metabolic path.
Disclaimer: the proportion and concentration of those fatty acids *may* have an impact on HDL/LDL synthesis, but it's looking less and less likely.
It's definitely the exercise more than the diet.
NOPE. Diet trumps exercise always. Get regular light exercise to stay healthy, but when it comes to health and weight, diet rules.
Right. A lot of the egg studies are colored by smoking because there is/was a correlation between high egg consumption and smoking. For a proper study, we need to study non-smokers who eat a lot of eggs.
"non-smokers who eat a lot of eggs"
*volunteers*
Yes bugs and any animal protein are excluded to the lessening of egg quality. The term is presented in a way to suggest that it adds value. It's just a cheaper way to feed chickens.
Don't be mislead by the price increasing term "cage free". All that means is that the chicken is in a somewhat larger enclosure than the norm. It doesn't mean that the chicken is free to roam around the farm.
And for those who don't already know the only difference between brown eggs and white ones is the color of the shell. Don't be tricked into paying more in the belief that brown eggs are more organic or better in any way than white.
Is there a price difference? I always get brown eggs because that's just what I've always done. And because an egg marketing jingle from the 80s told me that brown eggs are fresher.
Typically I haven't noticed a significant price difference. If there is one it is usually so small that my (admittedly aesthetic) preference for brown eggs doesn't hurt my grocery budget.
Historically, factory farms kept white chickens (because they were smaller and cost less to feed) which laid white eggs and small farms kept brown chickens which laid brown eggs. Small farms tended to feed their chickens better quality feed (and more of it -- that's why brown eggs were more expensive) and were often closer to the consumer, so that's how the belief arose that brown eggs were better than in quality/freshness.
I thought that white eggs were just bleached to make the shells white.
White eggs almost exclusively come from one breed of chicken, the White Leghorn. These are relatively small, high strung birds which lay lots of large eggs, usually one a day for about 2 years. They have a high conversion ratio of feed to egg and are thus more economically efficient. These birds are for laying only, not meat birds. Although I'm sure the meat of out of production layers is processed in some way, it is not the chicken you buy fresh at the store.
Most chicken breeds are brown egg layers (Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Austolorps, Etc.). The majority of these birds are considered dual purpose, for meat and eggs. They tend to be larger, and consume more feed per egg. These birds are preferred on the small farm because they are much more docile and forage well.
There are also blue and green egg layers, Americanas and Easter Eggers.
And for those who don't already know the only difference between brown eggs and white ones is the color of the shell. Don't be tricked into paying more in the belief that brown eggs are more organic or better in any way than white.
When I was in college and the only kitchen facilities we has were communal to the whole dorm building, I used to but nothing but brown eggs because the stupid guys who never boiled water for themselves before coming to college would look at them and think they were spoiled, lessening the chance of theft.
Hens that lay brown eggs are usually a bit bigger than hens that lay white eggs. So while the eggs themselves are nutritionally identical (provided the hens are raised and fed in identical circumstances) the brown laying hens do eat a bit more and thus justify a small price premium irrespective of any erroneous beliefs among the egg buying public.
You feed vegetarians to chickens? I suppose you treat objects like women, too.
You know it!
I don't expect everyone else be forced to buy them.
That's no way to get your PROG on. What's the point of eating vegetarian fed free range chicken eggs if you don't look down on anyone who doesn't and use government coercion to force everyone else to conform to your preferences? You've got a lot to learn about being a proggie douchebag.
I'm trying here!
*sobs into copy of communist manifesto*
I am reminded of Skid Marx.
and here I thought Florida Man lived on Meth, Alligators, and police beatings.
Police beatings are the spice of my life.
And pythons
I usually just buy the basic brown eggs, but you really do get what you pay for with eggs sometimes.
They're like a completely different color yellow...it's kind of amazing.
You should try duck eggs if you like really rich eggs. Also goose eggs are great because you only need one for an omelette.
Duck eggs make great breakfast omelets.
Plus, every duck egg you eat saves a duckling from some joker's lawn rider.
I had three baby rabbits in my yard, so I put a sign to mark them so the lawn guy wouldn't mow over them and then he took them. I don't what he did with them.
Duct tape....
Raised them, lovingly, and released them on a raptor and canine free preserve!
*doe eyes*
Duck eggs are awesome. Never had goose but also a big fan of quail eggs.
Quail eggs are eggcellent.
Me too. My main staple is $4 a dozen cage free eggs, but sometimes I get crazy and buy the $6+ free range, natural diet, massaged-daily-chicken eggs.
It's easy to imagine that those who have pushed so hard for this regulation...
have brains a size comparable to those of the chickens they worry for.
being most harmed by this price spike are the poor who discover a basic food stable is now consuming more of their limited budgets. The impact of the flu would have resulted in a spike anyway, but at least that's just temporary.
I thought poor people ate gruel?
Sometimes they like to crack an egg on top though.
Someone spoils their orphans...
Millet.
Millet is amazing. Cheap, tasty, filling, and nutritious.
2.57 a dozen
WOW
.2 cents per calorie.
That must be the best deal in food ever in the history of man with the exception being wheat BUT wheat must necessarily include harvesting and processing...not eggs, sooo.
.5 cents for 85% ground beef
.04 cents for flour
holy crap food is cheap
Well, the recommened diet is 2000 calories per day. So based on the price of eggs that's $4 / day for living on eggs, $10/day for ground beef , and $0.80 / day for flour.
Just to put that in further perspective, that would be $120/month for eggs, $300/month for ground beef.
So .... not THAT cheap.
Fine, you and Hugh will get a family of 4 meal breakdown for 1 week. Hows that.
Eating in the US does not have to be expensive. Nor is it difficult. Plus the poor who typically liive in cities have a ton of cheap options.
Oh, I agree. You can live off of rice and beans for under $1 a day easily.
That would make me gain 100 pounds inside six months and trigger any diabetes genes that are waiting to be triggered. I cannot think of a WORSE diet for my health and sanity than that.
High beef and egg prices also serve to limit the ability of those nasty low-carbers and paleo eaters to buy quality food, especially if they're poor. So, bonus? Or intended outcome? (Depends on which day I'm wearing my tinfoil cap.)
I come up with .3 cents. So you're entire point is invalid.

Urban chicken farming: so hot right now.
I would if the Commander would let me. I grew up on a farm. I hate chickens but I love how they and their eggs taste. PLUS I need help keeping little assholes off my hops.
Why do you hate chickens?
Chickens are mean, stupid animals, whose flesh and menses happen to be delicious.
whose flesh and menses happen to be delicious.
This...I don't even...
It's true - eggs are just chicken menstruation. If you'd rather not live with that fact you can always have some balut instead.
Because he grew up on a farm and was around them all the time, so he knows what miserable nasty creatures they are.
My parents have chickens, of course we treat them more like pets than egg machines, so I had a different experience.
We kept about 30 layers and 50 feeders per year.
cleaning the coop (for the kids of course) is probably in my top 3 or worst things ever.
I hope cleaning out ducks is higher on the list, because it certainly should be.
Good way to control ticks too.
Fuck. We grew up with cows and hayfields. Ticks, spiders, snakes and shit basically had free reign. Lesson: Cows, while tasty, are expensive and useless.
I had to stop on a big street in a fancy part of LA for chickens crossing the road.
The thing is I can feed my family of four quite nicely on very little money (we don't do this cause we are spoiled rotten and make plenty to splurge with).
When I go to sunflower and shop for 20 minutes and have a large basket (trolly for you UK pukes) full it usually costs me less than 20$.
I had a friend who when challenged to live like a poor person (he is rich but also crazy health nut) he strove to live on $1.00 a day for a month. He ended up averaging $0.72 a day. And he was fine with it.
Unrelated, why does this government site use dinosaurs for icons?
here
I don't know why poor people complain about being poor all the time. I mean if rich people can do it, it must be easy for poor people since they have so much practice.
HAH Cmon Hugh
I grew up on a farm and likely outworked most people who comment here doing so. I also didnt have a lot of money back then.
So yeah if I can do it with very little money they can too.
And if they can't, well then they can just choose to be rich instead.
OR we can force people who are productive in life to give the poor their hard earned shit cause feelz right? That's the ticket. It is certainly better than asking them to work for a living. Amiright?
For a small fee I will teach anyone how to live on 10$s a day (like minor lords too) for a family of four in food costs.
If your 15$ an hour minimum wage job can't support that then I guess we need more government or something.
The above is not a guarantee for a Paleo diet but I will certainly satisfy the calorie counters who don't think Paleo is for them. My hard core paleo is actually more expensive but again, I fucking earned it so I am going to kick my orphans and eat my steak.
Look, Hugh, it's well known that if anyone doesn't complain about the thing you complain about, it's your fault for not being more like them.
Everyone loves to complain.
Ugh... I hate to complain. Let me drone on about how much I hate to complain.
Man, there's nothing worse than complainers who complain about complaining. If I had a nickel for every time...
"Live" on a dollar a day? Or "eat" on a dollar a day?

That Cecil the ex-lion poaching fiasco is not going away...
http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/29/.....index.html
The American dentist thought the hunt was legal.
The land owner did not have a lion quota this year.
Cecil's cubs will now be eaten.
No word on whether Cecil ate any young when he took over the pride.
It's the dentist's fault lions eat their young.
But in all seriousness, apparently the dentist was nailed for previously poaching a black bear in Wisconsin. And he bragged about hitting a playing card from 100 yards with his bow which is fine by itself but apparently the lion suffered for 40 hours before they tracked/shot it. 100 yards is 2-3Xs the max "ethical" range for bow hunting. If the lion lived another 40 hours, then I'd wager it's because he shot it in the stomach or haunches from way too fucking far away.
The prior record and suffering of the animal means I shed no tear for liberty if he loses his hunting license for life.
I am fine with hunting (used to do it myself) but what this guy did was neither ethical nor sporting. Fuck that asshole with a woodchipper.
I don't get the people that look down on hunters for using scopes and range finders. I say any tech that gives better odds of a clean kill is ethical in my opinion.
The potentially unethical shot and the lack of a tag by the landowner was my primary take-away from this. Everyone else crying about how cute and cuddly the lion was and "why didn't you just give that $55,000 to the starving African children" can go screw.
He has shut down his practice, which is being protested, and apparently is not living in his house, which is being protested. The anti-hunting people have come out strong against this.
This is one of those situations where, regarding the proportionality of the response, what he did was worse than anything ISIS has ever done.
Jimmy Kimmel on Cecil the lion
what he did was worse than anything ISIS has ever done.
Well, duh! ISIS just kills people. These anti-hunting zealots don't give a shit about people.
this.
I remember once in high school hearing from this grief-stricken girl about a news story in which an elephant trampled some people to death in India. She was afraid they were going to put the elephant down, didn't give a shit about the people who died.
The prior record and suffering of the animal means I shed no tear for liberty if he loses his hunting license for life.
Nor would I shed a tear if his guides, whose job it was to make sure the hunt was legal and above board, end up rotting in a Zimbabwean prison. Especially if they were knowingly breaking the law. The dentist may be a total douchecanoe, but assuming he's telling the truth it sounds like he didn't realize the lion he was hunting was a tourist attraction for the nearby wildlife park.
I have some mixed feelings towards the dentist because, like I said he's probably a douche, but I suspect that a lot of the twitter mob's outrage has more to do with the fact that he's a rich white guy who could afford to pay $50,000 dollars to go to Africa and hunt lions. You don't see much outrage directed towards the guides, and there probably should be.
He is an easy target.
True, he is the easier target to go after, and deserves at least some grief over this. Probably not to the point of losing his entire livelyhood, which is what's happening here - he's shut down his dental practice, taken his website down, had his Yelp page vandalized with bogus negative reviews etc. - it reminds me a lot of the twitter mobbing of the pizza joint in IN that committed the thought crime vis a vis gay marriage.
But I haven't seen anyone in the twitter mob say anything about the two Zimbabwean's he was with who didn't have the proper permits to even stage the hunt, and baited the lion out of the protected area of the park. The only reason I can think of is that they're not rich white people and this is mostly just an excuse for a lot of SJWs to get their 2 minutes hate on. Leave it to the SJWs to make a trophy hunting dickbag look somewhat sympathetic.
Correct. He should not receive sympathy, and yet he has mine because his life is ruined. In a perfect world, his dental practice would lose customers because "hey, he is the guy that killed that lion,?" not because a bunch of professional protesters and people without jobs got together to shut it down.
This.
Trophy hunting is perfectly legal. The guy was even a bow hunter apparently, so it's not like he's doing it the "easy" way with a shotgun. If the lion in question hadn't been a tourist attraction only a few animal rights extremists would care.
It's totally because he's a white American guy, and easier to threaten than tracking down the assholes in Africa who led him on a hunt in a location they ought to have known was off limits.
"No word on whether Cecil ate any young when he took over the pride."
Of course not. Cecil was a hero and never hurt anyone or anything.
Anyone who has ever had a housecat can tell you what loving, peaceful beasts they are. Their reputation as a narcissistic killing machines who will randomly claw your face off after torturing a mouse for hours is unwarranted in the extreme.
Where I am (Virginia) eggs went up from about $1.88 per dozen to around $2.57 per dozen.
Pretty sure California's absurd $4.99/dozen prices are largely caused by the regulation.
Fried rice without eggs just isn't fried rice.
Panda Express doesn't give a shit.
I'm sure that they will when they lose business over it.
I doubt the clientele of Panda Express give much of a shit either. Corn, or as the Chinese call it, Maize, is totally authentic.
Yeah - those bastards don't even sell panda-based cuisine.
"As predicted by anybody with half a brain, the new rules were already driving up the price of eggs and cutting supply."
The CA (D) electorate and the state gov't officials did not see this coming!
Progressives are more than willing to fudge numbers to get what they want, as any astute observer has realized by now. They don't even believe in economics anyway. As far as they are concerned any number they invent to project the price of eggs is equally valid since the entire field is a plot by evil capitalists anyway. The concepts of supply and demand were invented by the Koch brothers to brainwash the masses.
They don't even believe in economics anyway. As far as they are concerned any number they invent to project the price of eggs is equally valid since the entire field is a plot by evil capitalists anyway. The concepts of supply and demand were invented by the Koch brothers to brainwash the masses.
THIS IS WHAT PROGTARDS ACTUALLY BELIEVE
I'm not joking. My sister is one. Every time I have a political argument with her and I make some argument based on standard neo-classical economics, she freaks out and goes all Marx and how rich people invented economics to brainwash people into supporting the capitalist system.
Oh I know. I have a sister who's a self described socialist. I don't talk politics with her. Especially after I told her that socialists were economically illiterate morons and useful idiots for full on communists.
Marx was a classical economist...
She still thinks that profits come from expropriating the surplus labor value of the proletariat.
Maybe your respective sisters should take a look at what happened in almost every single socialist society, and try to figure out what sets the ones that don't devolve into death camps and mass graves apart from the rest?
Like how the only semi-successful socialist societies (specifically European style socialist democracies) mainly survive because of relatively high levels of economic freedom and a capitalist market. Which enables the tax payers to continue to pay for any kind of welfare and other government subsidies.
Still, those societies run out of other people's money eventually. Every European socialist democracy has had to make concessions over the years, despite increasing tax rates, or they are doomed to fail. Such as privatizing infrastructure, or lowering the quality of health care.
If they don't, well.. Greece.
Then there is the whole idea of applying a philosophy which is concerned with who owns the means of production to a post-industrial world.
Maybe already covered, but WTH? Ivana long ago retracted the rape-rape thingy, yet this lady on CNN is "uncomfortable" with believing the retraction.
http://www.realclearpolitics.c.....-rape.html
Well, how much did Ivana get paid for that retraction?
Less than she got paid for the accusation?
I'm pretty sure she's getting the same checks for both.
Great, now calling the victim a hooker. You are horrible.
Not as much as she got paid for the insertion.
Straf, no one ever embellishes a past occurrence, or even outright lies, during a divorce hearing.
I expected a "would" out of you.
Unless Ivana can produce a copy of the enthusiastic consent form, it was rape.
"The rules aren't restricted to California farms, either. Farmers in other states that want to sell their eggs to California also have to comply, a demand that has prompted lawsuits from outside states. So far a federal judge in California has ruled that the states lacked standing to sue on behalf of the farmers within those states."
So you're saying that one of the very few original and legitimate purposes of the federal commerce clause is NOT being enforced in this case.
Why would a farmer in a non-California state comply with this law? To sell eggs to Californians? Fuck them.
Ya know - there is no shortage of food in the country and no one is going to starve if they don't have eggs. I don't see why we have to have government sanctioned torture of animals simply so that most of us can waste 6 of the 12 eggs before the use date.
While I think the government often sucks with their regulations, preventing torture of animals in a squarely first-world country (that has no shortage of food and wasted food) is actually a decent use of their time...for once.
Anybody want to unpack this statement?
What's to unpack? She's arguing for a legitimate state interest in preventing unnecessary animal torture.
Let me play!
* "don't have eggs" != "have less eggs".
* "I don't see why we have to have government sanctioned torture" != "I don't see why we have to have so much government sanctioned torture"
Spouted by a thinly veiled neo-Malthusian who doesn't want ANYONE to have *ANY* eggs.
How did I do?
Pretty well.
Yours was (is) better.
Can I subscribe to your inductive logic course?
Ya know - there is no shortage of food in the country and no one is going to starve if they don't have eggs.
Red herring. Not relevant, just meant to forestall any argument by saying that anyone who disagrees is just whining about something unimportant, because they aren't starving.
I don't see why we have to have government sanctioned torture of animals simply so that most of us can waste 6 of the 12 eggs before the use date.
Also irrelevant. Meant to imply that anyone who disagrees is wasteful.
While I think the government often sucks with their regulations, preventing torture of animals in a squarely first-world country (that has no shortage of food and wasted food) is actually a decent use of their time...for once.
Loaded statement. There is a legitimate point here, but it is buried in so many distractions and fallacies it's difficult to take it seriously. Also, in order to justify government intervention, it is incumbent upon the government to prove that chicken farms constitute torture. Even then, there is a question about whether animal rights justify government intervention.
You actually heed the 'use by' date? Also some people eat lots of eggs. I could afford most cruelty-free eggs but if I'm searching for cheap protein this 30%+ cost increase would surely hurt.
"Let them eat [some other source of protein]" - LadyO
Bugs.
/UN
"... don't see why we have to have government sanctioned torture of animals simply so that most of us can waste 6 of the 12 eggs before the use date...."
Never saw 'government sanctioned animal torture', but I'm sure you're an example of government-provided idiocy.
See, if something isn't banned it's sanctioned.
Are these additive events? Wouldn't a flu kill make room for the remaining chickens? Or does it wipe out an entire farm?
I think the whole flock usually needs to be culled.
Rita's switched from frozen custard to soft serve because of the egg shortage.
Jacked up? That's 21.4 cents an egg. Big whoop.
