Fox News Reports Man Shot by Baltimore Police, Then Walks It Back
Developing...
Fox News briefly reported that Baltimore police had shot a young black man multiple times near the place where last week riots broke out over the death of Freddie Gray. But the Baltimore Police, through its Twitter account, says the reports are mistaken:
The network has since changed a headline on its website from "Man shot by Baltimore police" to "Conflicting reports on gun incident in Baltimore." The article initially said that "a Fox News crew witnessed a young black male running from police before he was shot." That sentence has been deleted from the updated article.
The story is still accompanied by an image of an unidentified man being rolled away on a stretcher from the scene.
The Baltimore Sun is reporting that, per the police, a suspect's gun went off during an arrest attempt, but the bullet didn't hit anyone. We'll update this post as we know more.
UPDATE 4:30 p.m.: Fox News' Shepard Smith has issued an on-air retraction. "Sounds like what happened is we screwed up," he said. "Our people on scene were wrong. Theirs was an error that was honest and straightforward and our duty as journalists is not to make mistakes, and when we make mistakes we are duty-bound to correct them immediately and as clearly as possible. So I'm now in correction mode and we apparently were wrong. … And on behalf of Mike Tobin and the rest of our crew there and he rest of us at Fox News, I am very sorry for the error and glad we were able to correct it quickly." Mediaite has his full remarks.
Shortly after the incident, Fox News correspondent Mike Tobin, who was with the news crew on the scene, had called into a live broadcast and given this report: "We saw a guy running from the cops here, right at the intersection of North and Pennsylvania…and as he was running away, the officer drew his weapon and fired and struck the individual who was running away. He was a young black male, and what we saw on the sidewalk as the crime scene unfolded there, there was a revolver lying on the ground. It looked like a six-shooter revolver with a long barrel. He was alive, they just took him off in the ambulance, but he did not look to be in good shape at all."

No reason not to viciously pursue the narrative regardless of the facts. #IbelieveThem
Weird story. Cops say the suspect's gun went off when it fell to the ground during the pursuit but that no one was struck. Why is the suspect strapped to a gurney exactly?
"We didn't shoot him but we maybe kinda sorta...broke some of his pieces."
+1 vertabrae "issues"
"It happens. Natural causes. Waddayagonnado?"
Why did I read the comments?
You gaze at the stupid....and it gazes back, burden a hole through your soul that will never be filled.
It's like that, isn't it?
uh - "burden" translates to "burning" just for today, mmmkay?
So, if I apply your rule, you're saying that "burning" translates to "burning" just for today. What, pray tell, does it translate to elsetime?
no
Oh, the new Yes.
*blows rape whistle*
White man's burning? Holy fucking racist!
The burden - it a bitch
Pointless self abuse? Massachism?
Look, the media is just going to give people what they want. Even if it's not true. Because many people have shown they'd much rather be given info that confirms their biases and prejudices instead of disappointing truth.
Incentives matter.
Riot are good for business.
If Katrina didn't expose that any kind of disaster/riot/whatever is great for business, especially when hyped beyond all belief, nothing did.
"We are reporting firefights between police and rioters."
"You've seen these firefights?"
"No, but we're reporting them anyway."

That's still the "title" in the link. Noyce.
Why do people keep doing stupid shit in front of cops and then getting pissed when they respond by doing stupid shit?
this kid who got arrested was sitting on a front porch, apparently saw the police cruiser and got up and immediately started sprinting away.
He was in the middle of a crowd of people, just wait for the cops to drive past you idiot
Perhaps he's the type of person who unconsciously believes everything in the world is all about him. It's definitely a species of stupid, whether you're doing something illegal or not.
Leave Bill Clinton alone!
saw the police cruiser and got up and immediately started sprinting away.
If that's all that happened, then this arrest was illegal, as fleeing the cops is not, by itself, probably cause for arrest.
nah apparently his gun was printing and they saw it, so thats why they chased him
all i'm saying is it doesn't exactly make you look like a law abiding citizen who the cops shouldn't bother when you start sprinting away as soon as you see them
and yeah, if he wasn't carrying a gun, this would have been an illegal arrest or detainment
P.S. i think running away is probable cause? but i'm not positive on that
Nope.

that's good, it would be bullshit if it was. I did see a source that said apparently fleeing from police can be seen as probable cause in "dangerous locations"
"Fleeing from police is not, by itself, illegal in America, and the U.S. Supreme Court has made clear that in safe neighborhoods, people not suspected of criminal activity can ignore a police officer who approaches them, even to the point of walking away.
But courts have set a different standard for places where street crime is common, ruling that police can chase, stop and frisk people if their location contributes to a suspicion of criminal activity."

If they're going to make a story out of every time there's some sort of violent crime and police involvement (regardless of whether the cops were the ones committing the violent crimes, or not), that's going to be a full time job.
Pull up a crime map of Baltimore and looks at some of the areas that look like they were shot by a shotgun with red paint pellets.
SARAH PALIN IS TO BLAME!!!! KULTURE OF VIOLENCE!!!
There is a reporter at the Baltimore Sun who basically has this job.
Not every time a crime happens, just every time a young black man gets shot by a cop. Regardless of whether or not it's true.
Any and all issues with the network's political loyalties or the editorial stance of their opinion programming hosts, Fox News has the absolute worst live/breaking news coverage of any network on television. A good 3/4 of the time you can scarcely get to the part where they botch the facts of the story for all of the technical snafus.
*Any and all issues... aside...
What's really puzzling is that it sure sounds like an eyewitness report by the news crew of somebody getting shot by police.
Either (a) somebody lied when they made that report or (b) somebody is lying now about nobody being shot.
I wonder which it is?
I'm also confused by the revision to the story by Fox. They seem to be saying that Baltimore Police initially tweeted the suspect had been shot but the only tweet I see is Baltimore Police saying that was NOT the case.
Meh. I'm sure this will only result in a dozen buildings burned to their foundations.
This is what puzzles me:
Fox News correspondent Mike Tobin, who was with the news crew on the scene, had called into a live broadcast and given this report: "We saw a guy running from the cops here, right at the intersection of North and Pennsylvania...and as he was running away, the officer drew his weapon and fired and struck the individual who was running away.
That sure reads to me like a direct eyewitness account of a police shooting, that recites a cop pointing a gun, shooting it, and hitting someone.
Either that eyewitness account is so comprehensively wrong I would have to say it was fabricated, or somebody is lying about no shooting having occurred.
In other news, Reason Hit & Run prematurely posts FOX News police shooting story then has to walk it back when it turns out that FOX news doesn't know what they are talking about.
