  • Baltimore Police Department

Baltimore street gangs angry over the death in custody of Freddie Gray have vowed lethal retaliation against cops, claims the city's police department. Gray's funeral was today.

  • The debate over the proposed Iran deal is hot and heavy in the Senate, where opponents plan to do it in with "poison-pill amendments."
  • President Obama's recent use of drones in an incident that killed two hostages received grudging support from…Rand Paul? Paul, known as a drone critic, said the hostage-takers were legitimate targets.
  • The gay businessmen who hosted a meeting with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Uncool-kids) have made the obligatory Maoist self-denunciations.
  • Hillary Clinton's long-standing prudery when it comes to sexual and violent media content gets a little revived scrutiny. She tried to criminalize the sale of some video games to minors not so long ago.
  • China and India are both courting Nepalese favor with earthquake relief efforts. Hey, whatever gets the blankets and rice distributed.

Baltimore street gangs angry over the death in custody of Freddie Gray have vowed lethal retaliation against cops...

    Self fulfilling prophesy?

    1. Fist of Etiquette   10 years ago

      (But with a c.)

      1. Los Doyers   10 years ago

Only true crips intentionally replace letters with c's. *brandishes lightsaber* I will do what I must.

        1. Fist of Etiquette   10 years ago

You failed, your cripness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me. LOOK AT ALL MY MEDI-CHLORIANS.

    2. Andrew S.   10 years ago

Complete and utter bullshit made up so they can change the narrative. Judging from their Facebook page, it's working. The law & order "kill all the thugs, police should do whatever they can to go home safe at night" group is out in force now.

      1. Idle Hands   10 years ago

As usual thought there seems to be derp on all sides. Saying that the rioters and looters are scum and deserve to be taken down like the animals they are, means I'm a racist. Now following that up by saying that if they would take that rage out on the people who are directly responsible for these injustices, namely the Baltimore City Gov., and I would be more sympathetic, means I'm a cop hating anarchist(which is probably closer to the mark). I generally just counter that I'm not a racist or an anarchist just an asshole.

        1. Tonio   10 years ago

Why not all three? Don't give in to their bigotry of low expectations, Idle.

          1. Idle Hands   10 years ago

I do tend to sell myself short, tonio. I guess it's just low t.

        2. Vampire   10 years ago

If you're not an anarchist yet then you're a mini slaver.

          :0P.

    3. Ted S.   10 years ago

I thought the cops were the street gang. Why would they be unhappy over the death of Freddie Gray?

    4. Rufus J. Firefly   10 years ago

AC made it pretty clear last night that he loves all of us.

He is like Jesus, except instead of dying for our sins he huffs massive quantities of gasoline while drinking cheap Canadian beer for our sins.

        2. Los Doyers   10 years ago

Rufus has pioneered the art of fermenting the maple syrup from the tree in his backyard into hooch. And I'm part French Canadian somewhere on my grandpa's side so that wasn't racist.

          1. Ted S.   10 years ago

Hating the French-Canadians is a virtue.

            (Isn't Rufus an allophone?)

            1. Rufus J. Firefly   10 years ago

Yes. I am an allophone. I have the PQ ID tattoo imprinted on the inside of my wrist.

              HOOOOOOCH!

You ain't a man until you've had real Canadian Hooch - preferably with origins unknown.

              1. Los Doyers   10 years ago

                Does it burn going down?

                1. Rufus J. Firefly   10 years ago

YES. JUST LIKE OLIVE OIL IS SUPPOSED TO PINCH.

              2. Enough About Palin   10 years ago

Do they make liquor out of maple syrup? One would think it were fermentable.

                1. Rufus J. Firefly   10 years ago

                  Yes they do.

                2. Hamster of Doom   10 years ago

                  Would you like a recipe?

                  1. Pan Zagloba   10 years ago

That sounds delicious. I should check my liquor store and see if they have a mass-produced equivalent.

                  2. Los Doyers   10 years ago

I like your taste in hooch, HoD. Mind if I subscribe to your newsletter?

                    1. jesse.in.mb   10 years ago

Stop pretending you're literate, Los Doyers, You aren't fooling anyone and it's just getting embarrassing.

                    2. Los Doyers   10 years ago

Ahem, I'm trying to spit some game here, Jesse. Why won't all these gays stop cock blocking?!?!?!

Look, I'm trying to embarrass you to protect you from embarrassing yourself. BECAUSE I CARE.

                  3. Enough About Palin   10 years ago

But this just maple-flavored mead. Does anyone just ferment the pure syrup?

                    1. Hamster of Doom   10 years ago

That wasn't what you asked! What am I, Google? It's Canada, gods knows what they get up to in that wild, foreign land.

                    2. Tonio   10 years ago

Not sure if the pure syrup would ferment, for the same reason honey doesn't - not enough water.

                    3. DEG   10 years ago

      4. GILMORE   10 years ago

The amusing thing is that Emma (and the Brownies) seem to think that the kind of "Bullshit Deconstructionist Lingo" that scores you points writing a paper on Po-Mo literary theory is somehow *equally effective* when discussing something like 'criminal justice' issues.

they think they're going to win arguments about "why Due Process should be abandoned" and evade any need for "substantiation of criminal claims".... by appealing to post-structuralist understandings of what "reality" really is.

it would be funny if there weren't millions of dumbass kids who think she has a point.

It's obvious: Any prosecutor worth his salt knows that she'd beat the charges with an insanity defense.

But seriously, in any case, indicting and trying the case would cause too much grief for the prosecutor. Prosecutors are lazy bureaucrats; they like the WoD so much because the nature of most drug crimes is such that they are essentially proven by the evidence confiscated by the cops.

      8. Raven Nation   10 years ago

Georgetown wants video of the Christina Hoff Sommers event edited:

The University claims that we must edit the video because students who asked questions did not agree to have their faces shown/voices heard.... But it stretches credulity that Georgetown and its students would not understand that the lecture was a public event. The video camera was in plain view, and audience members themselves appear to be taking video and photos. It could not shock any student that he or she was on camera.

In addition, the mission of the protestors at the event was clearly to gain attention. Perhaps we are receiving this request because the students were too successful at gaining attention, and are now embarrassed at the reaction to signs like "Trigger Warning ? antifeminist."

    1. Pro Libertate   10 years ago

Usually, if there's video being shot in a situation like that, the shooter posts notices warning participants that hanging around means getting taped. And a further declaration that the tape can be used however the shooter sees fit, up to and including cutting it into a porn film.

      1. GILMORE   10 years ago

"the shooter posts notices warning participants that hanging around means getting taped. "

Wow, i totally saw the "T" as an "R"

        1. Pro Libertate   10 years ago

          It's a tape culture.

    2. John   10 years ago

Let me take a guess here and say that the students made asses of themselves and Sommers wiped the floor with their emotional outbursts that were masquerading as arguments. If the unedited video did anything but Sommers look good and the students look bad, Georgetown wouldn't be so keen on editing it.

      1. Pro Libertate   10 years ago

Probably a bad idea to try to sanitize something that was doubtlessly taped by participants, too.

      2. Viscount Irish, Slayer of Huns   10 years ago

So my question for Sawant (she hasn't gotten back to me about coming on ? and we have a very, very good relationship with her, she's been on a dozen times or so), would be when is it OK for a business to utilize contractors the exact way she's using them?

Are we allowed to extend the question to situations in which McDonald's franchises its business to independent business owners? Do employees of such franchises count as McDonald's employees?

Our favorite feminist dutifully charges up Sulkowicz Hill to die defending it

It's an interesting choice to go after the school, instead of going after Sulkowicz directly with a libel suit. Part of that might be that this is the safer route. A libel suit, after all, would mean that Sulkowicz would introduce evidence of her honesty in a public court, which could backfire dramatically on Nungesser. This suit isn't about what happened that night, but about the aftermath and whether the school had a responsibility to shut Sulkowicz down.

...This lawsuit is taking the arguments of anti-rape activists and directly inverting them, painting alleged abusers as victims and alleged victims as abusers.

For feminists, this tactic should feel familiar. There's a certain subset of anti-feminists whose main objection is to feminists' tendency to fight harassment and violence against women. For this group, inverting feminist arguments and arguing that men are the real victims is their primary strategy. Even the name they usually adopt?"men's rights activists"?is meant to imply victimhood. "I know you are, but what am I?" is elevated to philosophy. They deny the existence of misogyny, instead claiming that "misandry" is the real issue.

      1. Episiarch   10 years ago

Of course they didn't listen. First of all, they don't ever listen to anyone. Secondly, they are incredibly stupid, know nothing about or learn anything from history, and are totally incapable of this kind of predictive thinking. Thirdly, none of that matters because for them, "too good to be true" means "perfect". They just don't realize that it doesn't work that way for the rest of us.

      2. Brett L   10 years ago

"Only right-thinking people will use my machine for good!"

No, that's not how machines work at all. Machines take a certain input and deliver a certain output with no regard for the rightness or wrongness of the work they do in between. Why is that difficult?

    5. John   10 years ago

A libel suit, after all, would mean that Sulkowicz would introduce evidence of her honesty in a public court, which could backfire dramatically on Nungesser.

Truth is a defense to libel. If Sulkowicz is known to be truthful and telling the truth Columbia will call her as a witness and have her say as much and introduce evidence showing her character for truthfulness. So he didn't fail to sue Sulkowitc for that reason. These people are so stupid and lie so much, I don't think you can even call it lying anymore. How can you lie when you have no concept of what truth even is?

This lawsuit is taking the arguments of anti-rape activists and directly inverting them, painting alleged abusers as victims and alleged victims as abusers.

By this logic, when some innocent person sent to death row by a crooked prosecutor is finally cleared of the charges and sues the prosecutor, that person is just taking the arguments of anti crime advocates and inverting them and turning the alleged murderers into victims. This people make my stomach turn.

      1. tarran   10 years ago

If Sulkowicz is known to be truthful and telling the truth Columbia will call her as a witness and have her say as much and introduce evidence showing her character for truthfulness.

        Yes, they could, BUT......

They already formed an opinion as to her credibility - by ruling her claims as unsubstantiated.

So it's a much higher bar to clear if she isn't a party.

Moreover, if she's a party and gets to plead her case to a jury there is a non 0 chance the jury could fall for her bullshit.

If she's *not* a party, she doesn't get to make a case. Columbia can call her as a witness, but they will craft their own arguments.

I agree with you, though, that the guys claiming his decision to leave her otu of the lawsuit shows a degree of guilt are full of shit. As I know from my personal experience, suing someone who is utterly delusional and who lies fearlessly and recklessly in ways that are ultimately self-destructive is the legal equivalent of a frontal assault on a machine gun nest.

Dude, the LOOK OVER HERE NOTHING TO SEE will be amazing.

      3. Tonio   10 years ago

Not as good as if they lost. But, yeah, they'll probably offer to settle and include a gag order so we'll never hear from Nungesser again. Sulkowicz who is not a party to the suit will blather on about this for the rest of her life.

        1. tarran   10 years ago

Tales from the Derp: Derrick Jensen

I've never written this before in public, but my first thought on September 11 when I heard someone was attacking the World Trade Center is, 'Ah, so now it begins. Someone is finally fighting back. Given the terror that the United States routinely inflicts on people (including nonhumans, of course) the world over (and of course now a couple of years later the United States calls these programs of systematic terror 'Shock and Awe'), I'm surprised it didn't happen long ago. The poor have been very patient and long suffering, more patient and long suffering than anyone could ever expect.' That is what I thought.

I love it how he thinks the 9/11 attacks were caused by poor people angry about poverty or pollution.

There is a word for when someone incorrectly ascribes their own motivations to other people. It's on the tip of my tongue. Pro...projeh...something like that?

I want to bring down civilization. It's really clear that civilization is killing the planet. I'm interested in living in a world that has more wild salmon every year than the year before. A world that has more migratory songbirds every year than the year before. A world that has less dioxins and flame retardants in mothers' breast milk. A world not being destroyed. A world where krill populations aren't collapsing. A world where there are not dead zones in the oceans. A world not being systematically dismantled. I want to live in a world that is not being killed. I will do whatever it takes to get there.

      -Derrick Jensen

What's the point worrying if you have that point of view? If you think humanity is on the path to disaster, heck, just wait for the comeuppance. In fact, if they want civilization to collapse, they should push for more of what they think will make it happen, like, I dunno, libertarianism.

We have thug cops who are perfectly willing to kill unarmed people during confrontations with cops but when people start getting violent toward non-cops (especially as a result of a protest over police brutality) then the thug cops leave them alone. This will end well.

The head of something called Newsmax gives the best piece of DERP yet defending Hillary Clinton.
    http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfro.....id/640856/
Rather than simply "cashing in," the young former president wanted to devote a substantial amount of his time and energy to making the world a better place, improving the lives of poor people and, at the same time, demonstrating in a real way that Americans cared.

Remember also the context of the time. America was globally criticized during its war on terror, especially after the invasion of Iraq. Few nations joined the "coalition of the willing." Our nation was losing its stature as leader of the free world.

It was Bill Clinton, using the platform of his foundation, who became the de facto goodwill ambassador of the United States.

Hillary had to take those bribes. Her and Bill were saving America!!

    1. PapayaSF   10 years ago

Ruddy is a strange case: a major anti-Clinton figure in the '90s who now defends them. Hard to explain.

        Here's something to ponder =

        - Newsmax attracts the very reddest of TEAM RED
        - Salon attracts the very bluest of TEAM BLUE

        - Newsmax became profitable in 2003, and rakes in money
        - Salon has never been profitable, and shits money down the toilet in ever larger amounts

to be fair, newsmax was always a broad-based news-media project, and not purely-partisan wankery like Salon (probably more comparable to a Huffpo, really)

i am myself more likely to be reading Salon than Newsmax. Because the lulz.

    2. Brett L   10 years ago

They're fucked on this one. The book is too broadly sources and too damning. Sure, she'll have plenty of apologists but the money and influence people have a reason to jump ship.

      1. Pro Libertate   10 years ago

There are definitely signs of rats jumping off the ship. It's a pleasure to behold, though I hope it goes much farther than just finishing off her ambitions.

What's terrible is that even if everything alleged is proven 100% true, with all of the crime-committing that would mean, what are the odds that either her or Bill would serve time or even be prosecuted?

        1. Brett L   10 years ago

Eh. I'm okay with them both being tainted goods and never being allowed any cachet in adult society ever again. So what if this is exactly what Enron did -- deliberately make false statements on official tax documents.

          1. Pro Libertate   10 years ago

Criminals in politics rarely being held accountable and pretty much never being held fully accountable is a big part of our problem.

            1. Brett L   10 years ago

Maybe. The difference between persecution or prosecution might get blurry. Caudillos prose ute the former regime as a matter of course. Letting people just walk away might be the lesser evil. But the caveat is that they have to stay away, which Hillary didn't.

Last year about this time, I encountered something so idiotic that I pondered retiring from derpetology, as I believed I had finally discovered peak derp.

    Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAG2NQ0X7qs

    1. Viscount Irish, Slayer of Huns   10 years ago

Not even the most idiotic thing you've ever posted. That honor goes to the ATF agent who claimed you could transform a paintball gun into a semi-automatic rifle.

      1. Derpetologist   10 years ago

Oh, memories.... actually airsoft guns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2sWiZ8BizI

Yes, that was dumb, but for some reason the white privilege conference hit me harder. The cartoon by the teacher's union was also epic:

How do you even begin to criticize something so wrong?

          1. CatoTheElder   10 years ago

One can criticize something that is merely wrong. It is impossible to effectively criticize something that is incredibly stupid except to point out that it is ridiculously stupid.

      2. gaoxiaen   10 years ago

All you need to do to convert it is to replace everything in the gun. It's just that easy.

    Ralph Nader: Origins

When he was a kid, his mom would make a cake for his birthday. She would frost it and take a picture of him with the cake. Then she would scrape off the frosting and they would eat the cake. The frosting was just for the picture.

It explains a lot doesn't it? I want to give him a nice cake and say "it's OK Ralph, you can eat the frosting now."

They really do all want cake.

    1. PapayaSF   10 years ago

So that's where he gets his hatred of false advertising.

    2. Rufus J. Firefly   10 years ago

I thought it was going to explain how she'd shove his face in the cake where he'd almost suffocate on the frosting.

That would be a better story.

And then he could, like, demand a trigger warning each time someone brings up frosting - or icing.
