Meanwhile, in Voxland: Ezra Klein Calls on Al Gore to Run for President
The silly preseason
Rather than try to summarize this Ezra Klein article, I'll just post a series of quotes from it:

• "To many Democrats, the fight the party needs is clear: Hillary Clinton vs. Elizabeth Warren. But the differences between Warren and Clinton are less profound than they appear….The most ambitious vision for the Democratic Party right now rests with a politician most have forgotten, and whom no one is mentioning for 2016: Al Gore."
• "Bill McKibben, founder of the climate action group 350.org, calls Gore's work on the issue 'the most successful second act of any political life in U.S. history.' Perhaps that's hyperbole, but it speaks to the regard in which Gore is held by climate activists."
• "And there's a lot more on Gore's mind. His most recent book, ambitiously titled The Future…"
• "Gore's experience and contacts now reach beyond politics—and into venues that would be enormously helpful to him if he wanted to fund an expensive race. He serves on the board of Apple, as a senior adviser to Google, and at the mega-venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers."

• "He's made movies, written books, given speeches, testified before Congress—he's even producing a Live Earth concert with Pharrell Williams. All these venues are poor substitutes for the platform provided by a presidential campaign…"
• "Gore cares enough about what comes next that he literally titled his last book The Future."
Yes: The title impressed Klein so much that he mentioned it twice.
Anyway. You know that Gore isn't going to run; I know that Gore isn't going to run; Klein knows that Gore isn't going to run; you and I know that Klein knows that Gore isn't going to run; Klein knows that you and I know that Klein knows that Gore isn't going to run. But I'm pointing you to his piece anyway, because I thought you might want to see what clickbait looks like in technocratic center-left circles.

Say what you want about GWB, he prevented President Al Gore.
Yes....we frequently overlook his real achievement while in office.
"Center-left"?
Fuck it, Gore-Kaczynski 2016!
Now that three donor embryos are possible , this may give Naomi Klein ideas.
This also makes it possible to create a REAL ManBearPig.
The intellect of Homer Simpson, the leadership of a pyromaniac Smokey and the appeal of Bacon!
Can't miss.
WOW. I scored only 33%
Al Gore vs. Lindsey Graham 2016? I will have to have my eardrums surgically removed.
I may need to have my brains explosively removed.
"He serves on the board of Apple, as a senior adviser to Google, and at the mega-venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers."
Because decorating your board room with potted palms is old fashioned.
Of course, in Klein's world, a Republican with that CV would be unacceptable because of conflict of interest concerns.
You're right; hadn't thought of that.
KORPORRATE EVULS?!
Principals, not principles.
a Republican with that CV would be unacceptable because of conflict of interest concerns.
When a Rethug does it they're a "KKKORPORATE SHILL."
When a Democrap does it they "understand business."
I chuckled
So I see he makes a nice living in the protection racket. "Put me on your board, all the right people will know that you care about the right things"
Wait...this Kleiner Perkins?

Futureman is a great percussionist. The stuff he did with Bela Fleck is mind-boggling.
I'm cuing up Flight of the Cosmic Hippo.
He's a wooten brother. I took lessons with their older brother who never amounted to much.
Victor is... remarkable. If you can get through Live at the Quick without grinning ear to ear through the whole thing, you have no soul.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
" I know that Klein knows that Gore isn't going to run;"
You sure about that? Klein is an idiot of the highest order. I'm not entirely sure he knows how to wipe his own ass.
He created the virtual Arthurian round table that was JournoList and was savvy enough to keep it hidden for, what? Three years? While using it to get the right people elected. It's only his ideology that is moronic.
So would that "masseuse" get to be acting First Lady?
I suppose in Klein's demented world this counts as 'humor'?
"You are hearing me talk"
I love this. In fact, I would like to subscribe to his newsletter.
Here you have a very dull man, with all if the charisma of an unpolished turd, who flies around the world on private jets and motorcades of SUVs, and who uses more electricity in one of his many homes than 10 average amercians combined. All while battling the "evils" of fossil fuels.
Oh, and as the incumbent Vice-president, duting a time of peace and economic prosperity, he lost the presidential election to a complete shithead.
And someone thinks he would be a good candidate for president. Brilliant. God, I hope he runs.
We already know that YOU wouldn't vote for him. Unfortunately, your vote matters not a whit.
Oh, and as the incumbent Vice-president, duting a time of peace and economic prosperity, he lost the presidential election to a complete shithead.
No, no. He didn't lose. He was ROBBED. This myth is more important than the fact.
He didn't lose. He was ROBBED.
STOLEN ELEKSHUNZ!!!11!!!11!!!!!!!
Shit, how about a Gore/ Kerry ticket. Get both "victims" of BOOOOSH'S stolen elekshunz a second chance.
Met him in 90 or 91 when he was giving a talk at Memphis State. Boy was he a bore. Most pols are pretty good at stumping and pressing the flesh. Al Gore was a complete non entity.
If he father hadn't been a big time wheeler/dealer in DC, no way Al would be doing anything more than growing some tobacco and cotton on his 40 acres.
Does he count as a legacy/dynasty candidate? His daddy wasn't president, but he was an influential Senator.
Yes, legacy. There's no way he would have had the chance to fail out of divinity school without Daddy's name and money.
I admit to my naivete here, but why is this an outlandish idea?
The fact that this IS clickbait is surely some indication that the idea appeals to a lot of people.
I think it still kills the Democrats that he was robbed in 2000, and that it would therefore very much appeal to their sense of cosmic justice if he were to run again.
Daily Derp: Prog declares dictionaries are racist
http://everydayfeminism.com/20.....on-racism/
In the time they took to make their goofy cartoon, they could have defined racism.
They dont want to define racism. They want to redefine it. They dont like the fact that the dictionary doesnt support their notions of 'only white people can be racist' and 'all white people are racist because of some kind of white original sin' so they do what liars do, they change the definition of common words so they can hurl the 'racist' epitaph at will and if ever called on it, they can retreat to the cartoonish definition they constructed.
Mr. Eric Blair, please pick up a white courtesy phone.
please pick up a white courtesy phone.
White courtesy phone?! What, only WHITE phones can be courtesty phones!?
RAAAACCCCCIIIISSSTTTT!!111!!!!!!
They dont want to define racism. They want to redefine it.
Daily.....!
Holy fuck. This is "Through the Looking Glass" shit. "Words mean precisely what I want them to mean, nothing more, nothing less."
What they want to get to is words that have no meaning. Pure deconstruction.
The New Abridged Derrida Dictionary
Dictionaries are racist!
Merriam Webster wept.
Shorter version: We determine what words mean and what they mean on any given day depends on what our political goal for the situation is.
I will give them credit for being slightly clever: it's impossible to refute an undefined concept.
On the other hand, if you can't even define your concepts, there is no point in even talking.
And there you have it.
Ah yes, but they know what you meant to say. They are the final arbiters of meaning.
I couldn't even make it all the way through that stupid, idiotic cartoon. But that's probably my white, heterosexual, cis-gendered priviledge speaking.
How did Mr. Garrison from South Park get in there?
So you can't use dictionaries because they are often prescriptive, not descriptive.
But racism should be defined the way she insists it should be. Or does she actually want to argue that the 'privilege based' definition of racism is how it's popularly used?
Oh, of course not. We need to just accept the words as they are used by the 'oppressed' groups. This is nothing more than, "you can't point to your definition of racism, but I can point to mine."
Ha. The author beleives that however someone speaks is correct. And that dictionaries are wrong because they were written by "old white men". Fuck let's just say the language itself is racist since it was created and used by white people going back as far as historical linguistics can take us.
Thanks for raising my blood pressure, Derp.
Moreover, their hilariously stereotypical black guy insisting that "she BE there" is correct is a grammar issue, not a definitional one.
Stuff like this is proof of how much the insane JournoList far left dislikes Hillary. They're absolutely desperate for someone else they can latch onto that they think will continue Obama's tyranny (they know full well in their hearts that their true love Elizabeth Warren isn't running).
But Gavin Newsom says Hillary is so dreamy and is a total lock because she's beloved by all!
El oh el. It's been a a while since I listened to that but I think the utterly absurd Hillary blowjob was around the 40-50 minute mark or so.
^This. It makes no sense otherwise. I mean, c'mon - Al Gore?!
They must be really desperate.
This is hilarious.
When you build your movement around a personality like Obama, the movement dies when the personality is gone?
Who knew?
And if a personality like Hillary's can't replace Obama, then what are they gonna do?
They sure as hell can't run on ideology. The liberals in Washington and Colorado voted to legalize marijuana. How you gonna get 'em to ban Big Gulps now? And feminists are about as popular with the mainstream as a root canal.
Meanwhile, Hillary can't stop herself from acting like a slimebag, not even when the nomination is on the line. And nobody wants to be like Massachusetts. Liz Warren couldn't sell ice cream outside of Massachusetts.
Maybe they're going for the wrong Al. Maybe they should try Al Sharpton. He may be looking for another job soon, and why not run for President of the United States?
America likes Al Sharpton, right? Otherwise, why would he have his own TV show?
Resist we much!
I wonder if the DNC didn't want to admit to themselves they'd been riding a cult of personality since 2008 or if the Obama people wouldn't allow it, but I'm surprised they haven't tried to gradually shoehorn someone else next to Obama on the altar of worship, to have him or her at the ready for 2016.
Obama wouldn't have allowed such blasphemy.
They've boxed themselves into quite the corner. After Obama they need someone equally transformative, so they logically thought Hillary could be the first woman president. And now that she's self-destructing they desperately need someone, anyone, who can generate comparable excitement.
This is the point I've been trying to make for the last several threads on this issue.
Obama's built a coalition of racial minorities, public sector unions, and coastal white progressives.
But he's also alienated the middle-class whites that might have been Hillary's base of support. Hillary is out of place to the Democratic party that Obama has built. The D's are also counting on "Demographics" (read hispanic voters and other minorities) to win future elections now.
If they want to continue that strategy then they need another racial minority at the helm. Because I really don't see hispanics and asians voting in droves for an elderly rich white woman from the North East. Hillary is like Michael Dukakis only worse.
Very nice.
"Bill McKibben, founder of the climate action group 350.org, calls Gore's work on the issue 'the most successful second act of any political life in U.S. history.' Perhaps that's hyperbole, but it speaks to the regard in which Gore is held by climate activists."
HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA *takes deep breath* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Ha.
I love it when these idiots cite sources with a vested interest in promoting X as proof that X is true.
Jesus Christ, Ezra. "Ambitiously titled." Do you ever wonder if all these people you suck off are laughing at you?
And I know that I referenced this the other day, but I do love everything he says on Futurama, particularly: "I have ridden the mighty moon worm!"
OK, here's my impression of Al Gore having phone sex:
"I'm removing your bra. I've removed 15% of your bra. I've removed 35% of your bra..."
"I'm putting your boob in a lockbox."
it is telling that the D's seem to be actively pining for an alternative to Hillary though.
Meh, not so much.
I think people are misreading what's going on here.
re: "Ken Shultz|2015/03/17 10:30:38|#5159779~new~
They must be really desperate."
I think another way of looking at it is, "they know they've only got one candidate, so they need to go through the mental exercise of *pretending they're choosing her*"
i.e. they need to put up a number of straw-men, 'theoretical alternatives', so that when it inevitably comes down to hillary it doesn't look like the heir-apparent that it really is. ITS A CHOICE!
It helps them feel 'democratic' and stuff to think that Hillary is their 'best option', rather than the 'only option'.
I think a lot of Vox, Salon, etc. makes much more sense when you realize how much of it is not intended to sway anyone *outside* the fold, so much as massage the 'conventional wisdom' within the already-deeply-liberal camp. Its the *only* way it makes sense, in fact.
There is that as well. Probably true for die-hard partisans. But I genuinely do not think that Hillary is a good candidate, and I think many of them know it.
Thus, I am sure that people serious about winning the election might be seeking a real alternative. Those not deluded by their own propaganda about the demographic inevitability of perpetual Democratic presidents.
But I'm not so convinced that Hispanics are married to the Democratic party. I think many of them were voting D because of the racial symolism of a black president. Although the R's are trying pretty hard to make sure they keep voting D.
I've been amazed how many lefties basically take it as a given she will be the next president, barring any successful attempt by the GOP to 'steal' the election.
"Len Bias|2015/03/17 11:05:21|#5159889~new~ ~toMe~
I've been amazed how many lefties basically take it as a given she will be the next president""
They don't believe so much in the 'greatness' of Hillary so much as they depend dearly on the GOP being "Racist Corporate 1%'r Warmongering Womyn-Haters And Fagbashers" that they imagine
They eat up their own daily propaganda about the "Vile"-right wing, and gradually come to believe that's how everyone else views the world as well.
The idea that there's a very-normal, moderate group of people in America, who aren't particularly political, think race-trolls and environmentalists overblow everything, and mostly want to stop being embarrassed and intellectually insulted by politicians.... this idea eludes them entirely.
As far as I can tell, everyone is banking on the "Woman, therefore = President"-factor
I did this same math back in 2008, and I don't think its all that great. I think polls overstate how many women are really going to vote for her simply due to gender.
And, to add to your last point, progressives are absolutely, positively scared shitless at the prospect of the first female president being Republican. A Hillary defeat in 2016 makes this a possibility.
If the Democrats really do ditch Hillary and put up some white guy like Gore or O'Malley, the Republicans have to choose a woman VP.
Very impressive for someone who was in both houses of Congress for 16 years.
Also, double-checking this info on wikipedia, it looks like Gore dropped out of law school in order to run for the vacant House seat. I expect that, should he run again, we will see so much kvetching about how he abandoned his studies before he could get the degree?
"He's made movies, written books, given speeches, testified before Congress"
FRANK ZAPPA 2016
the 'never mind the smell'-campaign
I would be all for a Dee Schneider - Moon Unit Zappa ticket....
You thought wrong. I couldn't possibly care less about what Ezra Klein whinks about anything, and even if I did, that would have ended the second he used the word "literally" in a sentence for no god-damned reason: "Gore cares enough about what comes next that he literally titled his last book The Future."
That sentence would read the same without the word "literally" in it, and even if Ezra insisted on using the word it would make more sense directly after "Gore". E.g.: "Gore literally cares enough about what comes next that he titled his book The Future." As is it reads like something a swooning tween girl would post on Facebook. /pedant
This is exactly what I thought. Ezra Klein will always be a smug dipshit hack with the world's most punch-able face. His website sucks, he sucks, and everyone who admires him sucks as well.
Also, it appears the "anyone by Hillary" wing of the Dems are getting desperate. I mean, Al Gore? Is he serial?
He's super serial.
Who's Ezra Klein?
He's a gigolo (presstitute) who performs oral sex on people in power. Note that he does not do it for people "on the right".
But he can't be sued like the bakers who refused to bake a cake for a gay wedding.
Al Gore versus Twisted Sister.
My favorite part is when Dee Snyder implies that Tipper is into sadomasochism. Awesome.

One of the great moments in rock history.
"I have to go. A hwhale is in trouble!"
A hwhat?
I kinda wish Gore had won the electoral college back in 2000, if for no other reason than we wouldn't be faced with the proggies gone wild we have today. He was and still is their man, and his presidency, which would only have been a single term, would have put an end to most if not all of their ideas. Instead, Bush gave them a huge boost that they are still riding high on.
I wonder what the response to 9/11 would have been under Gore. I doubt that the US would have invaded Iraq.
IMHO Bush's misrule gave us Obama, and Obama's misrule will give us some neocon Team Red f***head who will go bomb Iran after 2016.
That's the point of divergence in Ken MacLeod's The Execution Channel. President Gore receives an intelligence assessment in the summer of 2001 hinting that Al Qaeda is about to strike the U.S., so he preemptively throws cruise missiles at a bunch of camps in Afghanistan. AQ strikes back with bombings in Boston and Philadelphia in which hundreds of people are killed. The military responses of the Gore and subsequent Hillary Clinton administrations leads to the violent collapse of a number of states in the Middle East and Central Asia, while paranoia and misinformation are rampant on the news and Internet.
Eventually the North Korean government, with the help of China and Communist France, surrounds the city of Pyongyang with spindizzies and teleports it across the galaxy.
It's a fun read.
I can see him running in '16 actually, if Hillary opts out. Who else do the dems have with as much star power?
" Who else do the dems have with as much star power?"
CHOMSKY/DEAN, 2016
Because Why The Fuck Not
No way Bernie Sanders is missing out on that action. I know at least two people who are very ready for Bernie to run.
Sanders/Warren baby.
Even in his own Facebook memes, Bernie Sanders always looks like just the grumpiest, oldest man ever.
Gore has been out of politics for 15 years. It's pretty funny that Klein and his bunch think he could magically get back into the game. Hell, Walter Mondale's still alive and only 87, so maybe they can draft him in 2016.
my neighbor's mother makes $86 /hour on the internet . She has been fired from work for 8 months but last month her check was $12427 just working on the internet for a few hours. see it here..............
