Estranged Wife Calls Police over Suicidal Husband, Cops Pursue, Shoot, and Kill Him
Man's family would like to talk to the woman but she reportedly took her children and left town.

A woman in Provo, Utah, called 911 on her BB gun-wielding 24-year-old estranged husband, as Fox 13 in Salt Lake City reports:
According to Provo Police, [Chris] Evans' estranged wife called 911 reporting a domestic violence incident at her home in the area of 1300 West and 500 North, earlier in the morning.
According to police during that call she said Evans' had a BB gun and was attempting to commit suicide by cop.
Police say Evans got away from them at his home by threatening to shoot them and, according to cops, pretending to attempt to ram their vehicles. Police say they entered the home afterward and found another BB gun there, at which point they feared Evans might have a real gun. Police went looking for Evans—who does not appear to have been pursued for any other reason than being the subject of a 911 call and resisting police contact—and shot and killed him at a distance of 100 feet, claiming he was resisting arrest and pulled a (BB) gun out of his truck.
Police say the cops involved in the shooting, who have not been identified, feared for their lives when they shot and killed Evans. "Odds are if you point a weapon at an officer while he is on duty, real or not, there's going to be a gun fight," a Provo police spokesperson said. "Officers have the right to go home at the end of their shift and they need to protect themselves."
As for Evans' estranged wife, her landlord says she took her children and left town. Evans' family say they would like to talk to her about his mental state but haven't been able to find or contact her.
In Utah, incidentally, you're more likely to be shot by a cop than a career criminal.

Someone in an earlier article was asking for a nut punch?
and it delivers. al-fucking-ways. but hey, cops was a benign show.
Sad boys, sad boys, watcha gonna do?
Watcha gonna do when they come for you?
You can't even parody these fuckers anymore.
I agree, WTF. When I read that all too common mantra I shook my head in disgust.
BB gun. One hundred feet. They were in fear for their lives.
This is past parody and it's so rotten I cannot even bring myself to offer up a quip.
On a much better note, yesterday I read about the "Cop Accountability Program" and I have been waiting for a good opportunity to mention it here: http://csnbbs.com/printthread.php?tid=727083
He could've shot their eye out!
This statement has apparently officially entered the cop jargon handbook.
If that's your primary concern, how about just going home now.
The less publicized slogan of "To Protect Myself and Serve Up Hot Lead to All Who Refuse to Obey."
"Going home" and "waistbands" seem to figure in every fucking post-shot press conference. It's all they know how to say.
So she facilitates this by calling the cops? If he was trying to kill himself by hanging would she, in a fit of panic, hand him a length of rope?
In fairness to her, she may have believed that somebody was bound to call the cops and thought that her best chance was to call them herself and try and explain that he was suicidal, that this was his intent.
And that all he had was a fucking BB gun. But they killed him anyway, because they have a right to even if they know the gun is not real.
+1 Tamir Rice.
According to police during that call she said Evans' had a BB gun and was attempting to commit suicide by cop.
Or... they facilitated the citizen's wish to commit suicide. You say 'killed him', I say, 'provided excellent customer service'.
Seriously though,
Shit...
Seriously though, I really can't imagine that many situations beyond an active mass shooting or writing the report for insurance after an accident that get better when you add a cop.
And even then only because cops are the only choice and therefore, the most ideal choice. Since police departments are jurisdictional monopolies of law enforcement and all...
Was it a Red Rider?
Apparently they keep re-running the same script because it works. A goodly portion of the population would agree he had it comin'. Obey or die.
It's a fine way to get away with killing your spouse.
"He says he has a gun!"
I had the same thought. A good deal of my friends have evil bitch exes who wouldn't blink an eye about using the cops to execute their former spouses/boyfriends.
Except it seems she told them he had a BB gun. Presumably so they would know he didn't actually have a real gun.
Which neatly absolves her, yet still he's dead.
Oh course, I also want SWATters charged with attempted murder.
I wonder if the wife is a beneficiary of an insurance policy. Although most don't pay out for suicide, maybe she figured if she called the cops to "prevent" the suicide, it might be paid out as an "accident" or "death by misadventure".
In many of the states, "estranged" is legally defined as "I'm fucking that friend of his I always said I hated."
She still hates the friend. She just hates her husband MORE.
It's also what most people would do when dealing with a suicidal person with a weapon.
Unless I see reason to think otherwise I will assume that her only major failing was assuming that the cops would do anything to defuse the situation.
Google pay 97$ per hour my last pay check was $8500 working 1o hours a week online. My younger brother friend has been averaging 12k for months now and he works about 22 hours a week. I cant believe how easy it was once I tried it out.
This is wha- I do...... ?????? http://www.wixjob.com
I'm sure Jesse Jackson will speak at his funeral.
If I was a serial killer in Utah, I would hope they would call me the Provo Lone Gunman.
Change your name to Samuel Mitchell.
That's a gouda one.
Damn, that is a cold blooded way to get rid of your ex. Can you say Black Widow?
""Odds are if you point a weapon at an officer while he is on duty, REAL OR NOT, there's going to be a gun fight,"
What? I mean, I would get 'it's hard sometimes to distinguish if the weapon is actually a threat or not so we have to assume it is until we know otherwise,' but REAL OR NOT? So if the weapon was a big neon green and blaze orange tipped Super Soaker, well, there's going to be a gun fight!?!
Sure, or do you want cops to get gunned down by AR-15s cleverly disguised as Super Soakers? Remember too that this applies even to random objects, as people have been gunned down with cell phones and walking canes in their hands.
Steven Spielberg is using TV remotes ILO guns in all his movies now, soooo...
/South Park
I know, and isn't it worse. Real or not? I guess it could be a chicken finger then, or even an imaginary weapon. After all, real or not. Sheesh.
"Sorry, Captain. The suspect's hands turned out to be empty, but when he raised them I thought he had an invisible gun in his hands and I feared for my safety."
Well, that super-soaker could be filled with acid or something. That cell phone could be a gun disguised as a cell phone. Officers have a right to go home safe (apparently a right that trumps everyone else's rights to self defense).
This is basically the position of every cop fellator out there.
Not much of a gun fight if only one is a gun.
Another suicide prevented!
Suicidally depressed? Don't kill yourself. Let us help.
Let the professionals handle it.
Medals all around!
Police say the cops involved in the shooting, who have not been identified, feared for their lives
The PD should stop hiring so many scaredy pants.
Why would they be? They didn't shoot a black guy, those are the only shootings that seem to get any appreciable level of media attention for the last few years.
The PD should stop hiring so many scaredy pants fucking pussies.
FTFY
Police say they entered the home afterward and found another BB gun there, at which point they feared Evans might have a real gun.
They also found a bottle of aspirin, at which point they feared he had Saddam's bioweapon stash.
There may have also been a hockey mask in the house from a previous Halloween, which would make the police fear that he was actually Jason Voorhees. Good shoot, IMO.
First...
Government is simply the name we give to the ways we choose to kill or die together.
The Constitution is a suicide pact.
and shot and killed him at a distance of 100 feet
I guess the police found themselves an opportunity to use their milsurp toys.
That said, I can't get uber outraged over this one. If the guy really was threatening to shoot people and produced a weapon that could reasonably be confused with a real one then (if the police are being honest, no given) it's a little harder to fault them. The stone thrower from the other day was a lot better example of psycho cops than this one.
According to police during that call she said Evans' had a BB gun and was attempting to commit suicide by cop.
On the other hand, what ever happened to brave policemen talking someone down so everyone gets to live through the encounter? Are Americans so different from Europeans, for example, who's police don't seem to need to blow people away at the first sign of danger? If the cops knew, or had reason to believe that the guy didn't happen to have a real weapon, and that he was suicidal why the hair trigger?
If the cops knew, or had reason to believe that the guy didn't happen to have a real weapon, and that he was suicidal why the hair trigger?\
You answered your own question in line 1.
That, and hiring only the best in violent sociopaths.
Film or it didn't happen. I've heard too many cops say "pulled a (BB) gun out of his truck" to take their word for ... anything.
It is worth pointing out that a BB gun is a real weapon. Not a very effective one against a person at 100', and no reasonable person should feel their life is threatened in that situation, but a weapon nonetheless. I'm not saying that justifies shooting the guy, but it's not a toy or pretend gun.
What really gets me here is that the police were called because the guy was apparently trying to get cops to shoot him. And they came and obliged him. You'd think that they would have come up with a better way of dealing with someone who is attempting suicide by cop.
Well, at least this didn't get filed under "Assisted Suicide".
/ducks
Joking aside, the "cops need to go home at night" does pose a challenge. I mean, it is reasonable to believe police retain the same right of self-defense as the rest of us. In this case, given that they were informed ahead of time that the guy's gun was a bb gun, I don't think that applies. Still, what is the best response to this?
what is the best response to this?
"Good shoot."
hth
SMOOCHES
Still, what is the best response to this?
To not hire pants-wetting, trigger-happy, cowardly imbeciles.
How about we stick to the real world?
A sensor on cop guns that won't let them fire if it detects urine?
Might as well just not issue them guns. Sheesh!
Oh, is the right-winger talking to me now?
I...I... I have a college degree, too.
Is that OK?
That thread was hilarious.
I'm sorry, but we'll need proof of this degree before we unpronounce you a dumb-dumb.
Joking aside, the "cops need to go home at night" does pose a challenge.
No. It doesn't.
"OfficersLumberjacks have the right to go home at the end of their shift and they need to protect themselves."
"OfficersRoofers have the right to go home at the end of their shift and they need to protect themselves."
"OfficersFishermen have the right to go home at the end of their shift and they need to protect themselves."
I think there does need to be an attitude that officers are going to die in the line of duty *sometime*. Obv. nobody wants to hang or turn over the "NNN Days without injury.", but everybody should see that people do, overwhelmingly, come home safely (or not as the case may be). Further, in places where the sign *does* get flipped daily, our world police force manages to do so without lighting up every Pashtun with a cellphone that appears to be a rocket launcher.
The rate of people going home at night is inversely proportional to the amount people that are interacting with police.
I think police on duty actually should have less of a right to self defense. If you are deliberately putting yourself into dangerous situations, I think you need to accept a bit more danger to yourself. It should be part of the job description that police take on more personal danger and have a higher threshold to use deadly force in self defense than normal people. It is far more important that normal people get to fully exercise their right to self defense than that police go home safe at night.
I think police on duty actually should have less of a right to self defense.
If I didn't see that as upholding the law impinging on self defense for the average Joe as well, I'd be inclined to agree.
However, IMO, not everybody is cut out to be a police officer and the problem is that statement is more true now than ever before. Moreover, the State has no right to self defense or presumption of innocence from it's own citizenry. So, while someone may put on a badge and accidentally kill a civilian, they should expect to go to trial and lose their badge and/or their livelihood, *every time*. Just as if it were a livery medallion, a CDL, etc.
Duck behind the car and listen for a noise when he shoots?
Evans..was attempting to commit suicide by cop.
So - SUCCESS! Everyone goes home happy!

Estranged Wife Calls Police over Suicidal Husband, Cops Pursue, Shoot, and Kill Him
A fool-proof suicide plan.
According to police during that call she said Evans' had a BB gun and was attempting to commit suicide by cop.
"We're on our way!"
*Soundtrack: slamming car doors, screeching tires*
30 minutes or free!
Ah, fuck, that made me laugh, you dick.
Pretty much, though after they get out their rifles. At least that's my assumption based upon him being killed at a distance of 100 feet. No way cops are that accurate at that distance with handguns.
found another BB gun there, at which point they feared Evans might have a real gun.
"In the yard, they found a pointed stick, which led them to believe he might have a bazooka."
OFFICER SAFETY!
Sticks and BB guns are Gateway Weaponz?!!!11!!
The police also found a small dog and shot it, but it made them think the husband might be a werewolf.
"Officers have the right to go home at the end of their shift and they need to protect themselves."

Having read the article and watched the video for which Mr. Krayewski provided a link, I find that this incident is more complicated than presented.
Evans "'was gesturing toward the officers as if it were a real weapon and he was wearing a tactical vest with a holster on it, which also added to the situation,' Post said."
Evans' gun was missing the orange tip, which is the clearest identifier that a gun is loaded with BBs rather than bullets."
This puts the actions of the officers in a new light. Additionally, Mr. Evans was pulling a different "rifle" out of his vehicle than the BB gun his wife mentioned/the officers originally saw him with.
However, I'm still against the following: "But when it comes to a suspect threatening the life of an officer by pointing a real or fake weapon at an officer, that officer's response training should be the same."
Discernment is necessary if we want to avoid the growing numbers of needless slayings by police officers.
Without both video and audio to confirm the polices' story of what happened, it is wise to assume that their story is a mix of lying by omission, lying by exaggeration, and outright fiction.
Given the rhetoric their spokesman used, I would normally tend to agree with you.
This one isn't as clear cut to me, so I'm waiting for some actual evidence before drawing any more conclusions, even if it does appear similar to a "For Your Total Wellbeing" situation.
BB guns don't have orange tips. Or they shouldn't. Because they are real weapons capable of breaking skin or killing small animals (or putting an eye out).
Unless it was really an air-soft gun. I wish people would get their terms straight.
Suicide by cop is a tricky situation for police. Suicidal people can be dangerous to others and you never know what someone who doesn't care about their own life will do. I like to think they could have done a better job than they did here. But it is a legitimately tricky situation for the police.
Suicide by cop is a tricky situation for police.
Not really. It's an opportunity to kill someone. Nothing tricky about it, other than coming up with a good set of lies to justify it.
Suicidal people can be dangerous to others and you never know what someone who doesn't care about their own life will do.
Suicidal, as distinct from homicidal, IDK.
It's not like these people out committing suicide by cop are picking out hostages, taking aim from a bell tower (I haven't seen any footage of the particular incident), or otherwise setting up even modestly elaborate threats to the public at large.
It seems, overwhelmingly, the notion is rather limited to exploiting excitement and confusion and/or baiting officers. Which makes it hard to distinguish from when officers induce excitement/confusion and shoot at anything that looks like bait.
Suicidal, as distinct from homicidal, IDK.
They're not mutually exclusive. See Adam Lanza, the Columbine shooters, etc, for particularly egregious overlaps.
It was an airsoft AR-15 with the orange tip removed.
was gesturing toward the officers as if it were a real weapon and he was wearing a tactical vest with a holster on it, which also added to the situation,
In that vests with pockets scare police officers or that it was a nice vest and they didn't want to ruin it trying to kill him?
Good thing he wasn't wearing a bolo tie, they might've had to 'suicide by cop' his wife too.
Additionally, Mr. Evans was pulling a different "rifle" out of his vehicle than the BB gun his wife mentioned/the officers originally saw him with.
Presuming the officers didn't have his wife in tow, constantly questioning, "Is that the BB gun?", this suggests;
1.) The police originally saw him with a BB gun or recognized that they were confronted with a threatening, but not immediately fatal, situation.
2.) They allowed him to draw a second weapon which they didn't recognize.
3) It's a convenient lie that justifies what they did.
Oh, yeah. Lays waste to any notion that they showed up on the scene and had to make a split-second life-or-death decision.
They rather deliberately waited and/or allowed him to pull out a weapon they didn't recognize.
Having read the article and watched the video for which Mr. Krayewski provided a link, I find that this incident is more complicated than presented.
That happens a lot with Mr. Krayewski's posts.
He has a habit of not letting the truth get in the way of hating on cops. The commentariat generally doesn't bother following the links to verify that he's not hiding facts that don't support his position, cause they like to hate on cops too. It's a wonderful circle jerk relationship.

"Police say they ente's red the home afterward..." Ente's red? Really?
LOL WUT.
Not much of a fight when only one side has a gun.
Oh, well, if the officer has the "right" to go home at end of his shift, with no consideration for the lives of the presumptively innocent citizens, then by all means, fire away.
I've had 2 career arcs, retail and medical, with a short side trip into the army. In both I have faced violent people more than a few times. Several were armed with knives within 7 yards of me. In every case the situation ended without death or anything other than the most minor injury. I went home safe every night(or morning). And I never pissed myself.
In every case the situation ended without death or anything other than the most minor injury
Obviously not suited for police work.
Might have been murder by cop.
Sees husband she wants dead going outside with a BB gun to shoot a few squirrels, calls cops, gets him killed, then skips town so she can't be questioned.
If I ever decide to suicide by cop, its not going to be with some pissy BB gun.
I'm tooling up to re-enact the police station scene from Terminator.
Phase plasma rifle in the 40 watt range?

Once again, don't call police if your family or friends need help unless you're willing to see them get shot.
I don't know if this has been posted before. This American Life has a 2 part series on cops and race that is pretty good. #547 and 548.

I can't blame the cop. It's a shame the guy didn't have a safer (to others) method of suicide available, but at least he succeeded.
