24) Somebody told me this at a party once, and I wasn't sure if I believed it. But out of curiosity, I checked the statistics, and it appears my buddy was right. Check this out:
- In 1965, 42.4 of the US population smoked. In 2009, that was down to 20.6%. (delta -21.8%)
- In 1960-2, 13.4% of the US population was obese. In 2011-12, 35.3% of the US population was obese. (delta +21.9%)
So over nearly the same time period, the fall in smokers in the US was almost identical to the increase in obesity. Of course cigarettes are a known appetite suppressant?that's explicitly why many teen-age girls pick up the habit.
So, all this research showing that our increasingly fat asses are due to more fast food, more sedentary jobs, more soft drinks, gluten, corn syrup, or whatever? Do any of those alleged causes of obesity correlate so well to the drop in smoking? Sounds like a good research project (good luck getting funding for that one, though).

We colored the lines according to how strongly Democratic or Republican the states are now; note that red lines (Republican states in 2014) drift across the halfway mark into Democratic territory as you go back in time.

There are some special cases worth calling out. The state that has moved the furthest to the right since 2008 is Montana. The only state to move to the left? At least, that's the takeaway from a recent debate among legislators in Utah, where a bill aims to clarify the meaning of consent in sexual assault cases. Specifically, HB74 would remove any ambiguity about sexual activity involving an unconscious or incapacitated person. But this concept encountered some resistance from at least one lawmaker who wasn't sure if that standard was overbroad.

"I'm not trying at all to justify sexual activity with an unconscious person, It's abhorrent to me," said Utah Rep. Brian Greene, KSTU-TVU reported. "It looks to me now like sex with an unconscious person is by definition rape. I hope this wouldn't happen, but this opens the door to it ? a individual has sex with their wife while she is unconscious, or he, the other way around if that's possible, I don't know. But a prosecutor could then charge that spouse with rape."

The word "female," in its primary usage, is an adjective. When you use "female" as a noun, the subject that you're referring to is erased.
For example:

This sentence is now about a human being.
It should be noted, though, that using "female" as an adjective can take a sexist turn when used in a case that isn't notable. Referencing a "female firefighter," for example, is appropriate only when her being female is pertinent to the story; otherwise, she's just a firefighter. But if you're talking about the first woman to become a firefighter, saying "the first female firefighter" is acceptable because her gender is relevant.
