There have now been at least 102 confirmed measles cases in 14 states since the start of 2015.
Little more than a hundred measly cases?
Hello.
The government's hand in fostering and nurturing psychopaths:
"In Western countries, state social policy intended to benefit society has over the long term done much to undermine the traditional family structure, with a sharp rise in single parent families. Likewise, state economic policy, perhaps intended to create a perpetual economic boom, actually contributed to economic instability by fostering the business cycle of boom and bust. During the early 1990s, state economists believed that they could enable a perpetual economic boom in the high tech and information sectors of the economy, but political-economic management of that economic sector resulted in its meltdown by the year 2000."

The government's hand in fostering and nurturing psychopaths:
Bill 101.
And Bill 22 and 178:
http://www.thecanadianencyclop...../bill-178/
Bill 14 that was proposed in 2014 went further.
24) Somebody told me this at a party once, and I wasn't sure if I believed it. But out of curiosity, I checked the statistics, and it appears my buddy was right. Check this out:
- In 1965, 42.4 of the US population smoked. In 2009, that was down to 20.6%. (delta -21.8%)
- In 1960-2, 13.4% of the US population was obese. In 2011-12, 35.3% of the US population was obese. (delta +21.9%)
So over nearly the same time period, the fall in smokers in the US was almost identical to the increase in obesity. Of course cigarettes are a known appetite suppressant?that's explicitly why many teen-age girls pick up the habit.
So, all this research showing that our increasingly fat asses are due to more fast food, more sedentary jobs, more soft drinks, gluten, corn syrup, or whatever? Do any of those alleged causes of obesity correlate so well to the drop in smoking? Sounds like a good research project (good luck getting funding for that one, though).
For those who care, my sources were http://www.lung.org/finding-cu.....Report.pdf and http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/h....._11_12.htm
Correlation != Causation
but interesting observation nonetheless
The most interesting case of correlation right now is the usage rate of acetaminophen and autism. Lines up quite nicely.
You have apparently missed yesterday's story that circumcision causes autism!
So that's what's wrong with me!
Oh, there's a lot more than that wrong with you.
*beams proudly*
*** dumps McNeil Pharmaceutical stock ***
This is actually pretty well known in the diabetes and obesity research fields. It isn't heavily publicized because A) the health effects of long term smoking are worse than those of obesity and B) the massive increased availability of food, particularly sweets and soda, is believed to be a larger contributor.
But do smokers die earlier and with fewer complications than the obese?
We know smokers health care costs are less than the average person.
We know smokers health care costs are less than the average person.
I think that is a false statement. Smokers have a positive impact on social costs because of tobacco taxes and they do not draw social security and other old age benefits for as long. Their medical costs while alive are substantially higher.
Not true at all. End of life care is significantly more expensive for non-smokers.
How did they measure obesity back then? Assuming it was different.
The CDC paper uses body-mass index (BMI). If you mean, have their standards changed over time, so far as I can tell from the paper it uses the same standards over time.
BMI.
Ha, ha.
But I thought the government was on the cutting edge of ideas and understanding how to cut through bull shit for the public and greater good!
I know BMI doesn't work when it comes to individuals with high muscle mass, but is there any reason to think it's not a good measurement for the average population?
There was something in the past few years about how obesity now contributes to as many (or maybe it was more) cancer cases than smoking.
They will always try to link something to cancer.
For money.
I recall reading years ago that cancer is produced on purpose as fuel for alien apacecraft.
If only someone could link it to Autism.
I'm starting to subscribe to the metabolic theory of cancer which suggests that they share the same underlying cause
Interesting correlation. I've seen a few studies suggesting that gut flora may also be at work...and then of course, there is this:
Lab animals getting fatter
"A new study of 12 distinct populations of eight different mammals -- including feral rats, lab animals and domestic pets -- shows that they, too, have been gaining weight over the last several decades."
Obviously we need more lab animals to start smoking.
^exactly!

Steve Martin bonus points.
Now take off your "Arrow Through The Head" and get back to work.
That's like asking someone to research if, oh, I don't know, child vaccinations have any unpublished side effects.
Obesity vaccinations should be mandatory!
"A doctor who was profiled by The New York Times for his close personal and professional relationship with Bill and Hillary Clinton has expressed skepticism about vaccines and touted research that found a link between childhood vaccinations and autism."

I'm too lazy to look right now, but IIRC there's a chart that shows the dramatic increase in diabetes starting in the 70s matches near-perfect to the chart showing the increase in Corn Subsidies starting in the 70s.
People have exchanged smoking addictions for food addictions
That's a good point. Might not be nicotine as an appetite suppresant, but simply that addictive personalities are gonna find something to satisfy that itch.
The rise of Starbucks is mostly due to the decrease in smoking. All those folks with $5 in their pocket, needing a morning fix.
Which baffles me because you can't smoke coffee shops any more - at which point I stopped hanging out in coffee shops. Oh, and Starbucks tastes like shit.
Sixty-four percent of investigative journalists believe the U.S. government is spying on them.
And yet they hadn't been reporting on the belief?
Frankly, I don't blame them much for not wanting to end up like Andrew Breitbart.
Frankly, I don't blame them much for not wanting to end up like Andrew Breitbart.

Why should reporters be different than the rest of the citizenry peasantry?

God: Great, now I'll never get the smell out of the fish.
That's funny. Although I'm guessing some guys are going to sit through it for the same reason.
I imagine it will be like an adult movie theater feature except replace the weird loner guys sitting far apart with weird girls. The only normal girls there will be with their boyfriends
The unemployment rate rose slightly, from 5.6 to 5.7 percent, in January.
I'm hearing squawking that that's not the real rate of unemployment in America.

Jesus Christ. The comments are worse than the story. A school cop BEATING A KID WITH A BATON FOR CALLING HIM A DICK is not "teaching him a lesson.
The Pope disagrees.
I was pretty sure the Pope's comments were about someone insulting his mother, not a direct insult.
Horrifying how many cop fellators there are out there.
So, buttercup is talking about himself?
If a cop called somebody a dick and the person tried to beat the cop, how do you think these commenters would respond?
The writers of the tv show "Blue Bloods" assure us that "cops are held to a higher standard."
So does the genius that brought "hth" and "smooches" to the esteemed comments section of H&R.
...of evidence. A higher standard of evidence in cases against them. Why does everyone leave off those two words?
"You should know that attempting to attack a cop will result in your death."
...is not "teaching him a lesson.
It teaches him not to trust the police. It teaches him cops are thugs.
Jonah Goldberg: Horse Pucky from Obama
So Christianity ended its violent era in the Middle Ages? Goldberg is full of shit again. Modern Christianity is vile and violent even if it appears mild compared to its truly disgusting fellow Abrahamic counterpart.
How is modern Christianity violent?
"What other religion uses a *crucifiction* as its emblem?"
Abortion clinic bombers, killing doctors, Jim Crow lynchings for examples.
Remember, religion is dispersed power since there is usually no central authority. Protestants are grassroots.
In the case of the RCC - they sanctioned pedophilia from Vatican City.
I am no fan of any religion, by the way. And Islam is easily the worst.
And what fraction of Christians support such acts?
Also see the Iraq War - bit Xtian support.
G-Dub famously said his "heavenly father" guided him on the decision.
No Cheney jokes please.
Also see the Iraq War - bit Xtian support.
Uh huh
'Modern Christianity is vile and violent'
Spoken like a true, die hard left-wing nutto when it comes to Christianity.
Your examples do NOT support your claim.
At all.
So being rational is now only "left-wing".
I disagree.
Tiller was the last abortion doctor murdered in the US, I think. Jim Crow ended before the better part of shreek was a stain on the bedsheets.
But, yeah, stack that up against the middle east and it's a perfect moral equivalence.
There's no good part of shreek.
And to remind PB, John Brown was a Christian -- maybe that's what he means since JB was very violent, of course he was trying to stop slavery.
Civil Rights movement was mostly Christians and Jews from what I've read.
wow, a veritable field of straw men. Christianity does not condone any of the things that you cite. But you know that.
But you're a partisan hack. And you're religiously against religion.
Religion means to rebind or reconnect. Generically it refers to a way of acting or way of life that reconnects or keeps one connected to one's beliefs or values. Most everyone is religious in at least one way, if not many ways. Those who are not, lack beliefs or values and tend toward nihilism.
You just have an unsophisticated understanding of religion and the human psyche.
The trained Christian assassins lurking around every corner trying to kill you are in strictly in your own head and don't actually count.
Wow, with all your citations and empirical evidence, it's hard to argue against you.
Go fuck yourself.
Citation.
That's not a citation.
This is a citation: http://s.hswstatic.com/gif/che.....tion-2.jpg
heh - when I was a teenager working at a warehouse, I had a co-worker brag about his Citation and how fast it was.
My dad owned one, and it was the car I learned to drive manual on. Sniff! Only to be replaced by an Dodge Omni.
Off your meds again? I'm no fan of Christianity but the Lord's Resistance Army is not typical of Christians across the world last time I checked.
They are also held to account by the governments of Christian countries if they commit crimes.
I've just reported Buttplug to the Christian police.
You're a Summoner?

I have been thinking lately.....PBP gives knee-jerk defenses of anything at all that Obumbles does, no matter how indefensible it is. Its arguments are dumb as hell and convince no one, in fact hilariously so.
I have begun to suspect that PBP must be Obumbles. Its not like he has anything else to do really. It must get under his skin that we lambast him constantly on here and it is hard to see how a narcissist could resist trying to hit back. Of course the swings taken at us under the PBP handle remind me of Obumbles pitching skills. That makes me even more suspicious.
I wouldn't waste my time here if I had the services of the White House Chef and unlimited free golf.
But you are sane and not a narcissistic personality disorder being called out on your bullshit.
I am convinced that his pressing the FCC to regulate the internet is designed to shut people like us up. That is the end game. He also just gave a speech where he mealy-mouthed the 'hate speech isn't free speech' reasoning.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture considers taking the radical step of only providing farm subsidies to actual farmers.
I have doubt.
Yes, extremely unlikely. Kansas Senators still support paying oodles of vig to guys who live in Westchester.
TTC removes 'phallic-looking' sign from Downsview station
Sure, blame the sign makers, not the architect who designed the station to look like a dick.
Well the architect came well recommended. His castle for the little mermaid was well received.

Dicks.
You know the guys who drew that up were snickering the whole time they did it, and are probably laughing their asses off now.
Even if it looked like a phallus, if the map was marked properly then how could it be misconstrued?
You don't see people removing maps of Florida from atlases just because it looks like a cock, do you? No, because people still need to know that Miami is at the tip.
Isn't Florida the reason Castro hates us so much? Because every time he looks at a map he sees FL pissing on his beloved country?
The Keys are the dribbles from shaking?
Just the tip.
TTC workers removed a sign at Downsview station Tuesday morning after the map of the bus platform began circulating around the Internet showing what looks to be the shape of a penis severely infected with genital warts.

In other "this is why cops shouldn't work in schools" news: http://m.wlky.com/news/lmpd-re.....d/31074772
At least this asshole was charged. Thanks to video evidence showing him punch a kid in the face and choke another to the point he has brain damage.
It seems that the cops who get assigned to schools are usually too dumb for even low level patrol/beat work and have massive authority egos. Pretty much the worst possible people to put in schools full of smartass teenagers.
Not once in those charges do they mention the words "under color of law"
"A shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security in these times is frankly too bitter to contemplate, but we have to contemplate it," Johnson told reporters this week.
Well said, Jeh.
"It is horribly unfair to ask people in the critical role of Homeland Security to come to work and not get paid"
Well, simply don't ask them to come to work.
This is our current state of affairs, unfortunately. A department that didn't even exist 14 years ago is now indispensable.
How many times must you be told? 9/11 changed *everything*!
Yes, go to a school, wait to be buzzed in, go to the office and sign in, then get escorted to a classroom and write "This is a post 9/11 world" on the board 100 times.

That was Boston.
Oh right. BOSTON STRONG!
Fun fact: ATHF made an episode for the next season called "Boston", which was basically 15 minutes of making fun of the city, but Cartoon Network made them drop it.
Great answers about it from one of the co-creators of the show:
Atlanta also shut down the airport when a guy ran down the escalator the wrong way because he left something behind. It was right after 9/11 though when the government was issuing color terror codes to scare the piss out of the rubes.

Watch America drift more and more to the right since 2008
That is true. But there was also a marked shift to the right 2000-2004 when the GOP took full control of all three branches of government.
The "left" won big in 2006-08 mainly as a reaction to that full GOP control and the calamitous result. It wasn't leftist policies that won in 2006-08.
And it is shifting right now because.......?
Jesus, you are a myopic idiot.
Except that the GOP didn't get full control until 2002, thanks to Jumpin' Jim Jeffords.

If anybody than a rep from FL had said this, it might make sense. But since I moved to FL a couple of years ago I realized that this state has the weirdest news in the country. I haven't investigated the local dildo laws, though.

Just lately?
...one of their cities has a law that says that women can only have six dildos.
Sanity at last. Common sense dildo legislation. Because how many dildos does a woman need, anyway?
Nobody needs....nevermind
Certainly no *semi-automatic* dildos that can fire off multiple orgasms as fast as you can, um, squeeze the trigger.
Before it can be classified as an assault pussy, doesn't it need at least one other feature (besides the high dildo capacity) like a flash suppressor or a bayonet mount?
Or that thing that goes up?
Bayonet mount.....thing that goes up.....I am pretty sure they are equipped with those, so yeah.

Those people were stupid.
Those people were spending company money and the store was jacking up the price and getting a cut.
I know about this.
^This^ too. It's not uncommon when equipment is bought or rented the by people in the field on construction sites, oilfields, etc.mformrental companies to kick a little back to the guys placing the orders. They jack the rate to the company and return a bit of it to the guy placing the order.
Happens in the equipment rental business more than anywhere.
It's not nearly as prevalent as it once was (outside of the drilling biz). Construction companies tightened ship during the big downturn in 2007-2008.

My favorite sex trafficking claim is the one where they say that the average age of entry into prostitution is 13.
No one ever bothers to think about how impossible that number would be. If that were the case, then for every 20 year old, there would have to be a six year old prostitute to balance the numbers. Hell, if you had a 16 year old who entered the field, you'd need a ten year old to make the numbers wash.
If that were the case, there would have to be like 40,000 child prostitutes in this country at any given time. This strikes me as unlikely. We'd probably notice if tens of thousands of 9 year olds were being press ganged into sex slavery.
Via the always great Maggie McNeill:
Have to share another great answer from that page, which should come as no surprise to anyone here:
The other great number is '100,000 children are sex trafficked every year!'
Apparently American police departments haven't noticed the kidnapping of 100,000 children. They're even worse at their jobs than I thought!
You SFed the link.
Whoops. Here it is.
Numbers add up to me, you fucking child-rapist.
WHY DO YOU HATE THE CHILDREN?!?!?!
WHY DO YOU FUCK THE CHILDREN?!?!?
I found a thread on Democratic Underground (I know, friends don't let friends read Democratic Underground) where they were making the claim about 13 being the average age of entry.
It was like they set out to prove that progressives can be as anti-sex as conservatives. All the comments took the claim at face value and talked about how if we legalized prostitution this would get even worse!
The best comment though was this one:
"ONE underage prostitute is too many. I cannot speak to the veracity of the article, but I can voice my outrage that this occurs at all. Dismissing the article doesn't solve the problem."
Look, I have no idea if this article is true. However, even if it's completely wrong, you can't just dismiss it or the child rapists win. /Democratic Underground
Stop it with your othering, bourgeoise facts you hetero shitlord.
Good call, though.
That's not quite true. It could be that for every 20 year old entering into prostitution for the first time, there are 7 different 12 year olds entering. Because that's totally reasonable too.

You are assuming incorrectly that they care about birth control, or women's welfare in general, over socialism. Fascism is their goal, women's issues are just a vehicle for getting there.

Jon Stewart marvels at skirmish between Florida and Texas lawmakers: 'We are run by children'
So, one child, who pretends to be a newsman, calls two members of Congress children while celebrating one of those children's don't give a fuck attitude?
I think the last part was done ironically.
Considering one of the people was a democrat, I'm actually kind of amazed at this news.
He called the Texan a child for saying *this*?
"There is no reason at all to impugn the people, the governor of a state of this country," "And I will await the gentleman's apology."
Truly childish!
I don't think he was calling out the Texan. Raw story worded it that way to make it seem so.
He was probably calling him a child for being (presumably) anti-Obamacare.

Unfortunate choice of words, but if anyone can be said to own children it is certainly their parents. I understand that a more nuanced answer would not have played well as a soundbite to low-information voters and when one is a politician one must always speak to the LIVs.

2016: "Can Americans trust a President who believes the toilet paper should roll under and not over?"
Contrast this with Melissa Harris-Perry who thinks that society (the state) owns the children.
I thought she thought "thothiety" owns the children. I guess I thought she was making some kind of pagan religious argument. One of the elder gods.
I think it's just pure Marxism. They want the state to own and indoctrinate your children.

I really don't understand the anti-vaxxers being described as a right wing/conservative issue. The people I know that are against vaccination are wanna be hippies and uppity progressives. Other than the Amish, can anyone point to where team red is anti vaccination?
I read that as "Obama ready for War Measles"

The Police Officers Bill Of Rights...working as designed to keep psychopaths on municipal payrolls regardless of how nuts they are.
Why does every special interest group in the country need their own "bill of rights"?
Because some animals are more equal than others
Because some animals are more equal than others
Speciesism.
That *is* craziness.
However, a serious question for the resident legal experts:
the office reduced the charges against Lopez after his family members changed their stories about the incident.
Emphasis added. Is this ever considered perjury or obstruction of justice?
I can't answer the legal question, but in,the case at hand, mould not the 20 minute standoff with cops have been enough evidence for a harder charge to stick or at least include in the plea bargain?
I don't know, maybe resisting arrest with force? A gun enhancer added to it as well? Im sure they could have thought of a few things to add here if they gave a fuck about prosecuting this fuckup.
Shit, is perjury even illegal anymore? Unless you're Martha Stewart or something.
Vermonters object to foreign influx of Latins and use of their Latin language.
From the article: "Heather Chase: 'Seriously?? Last time I checked..real vermonters were speakin ENGLISH.. NOT LATIN..good god?'"
Damn Romans stealing jobs from hard working Muricans.
Et Tu, Jordan?
Romane eunt domum!
What's this thing? "ROMANES EUNT DOMUS"? "People called Romanes they go the house?"
I'm not really that surprised. The majority of Vermont, being so rural, is actually pretty conservative. However, the majority of the people live in one urban center, and are quite leftist.
Also, there are a ton of Mexican farm workers around (adjusting for the fact that you are close enough to walk to Canada, not Mexico).
Ha, should not have commented prior to RTFA. Assumed that was a typo for Latino. Though the same attitude is displayed there.
No, no, I agree with them. All vestiges of Roman culture should be purged from Vermont.
What about the aqueducts?
Those are right out.
Have you seen how wet Vermont is? Get that artificial hydration out of here! Are you trying to trigger Hurricane Irene victims?
Surrepoducts.
You'll have to pry my vomitorium from my cold dead theater.
Recently, scholars have determined that throwing up actually is a part of the vomitorium--you puke in a bucket as you leave the theater.
How bad were Roman playwrights? Jeez.
You have no idea. And no, ocelot spleens and larks' tongues have no bearing on the constant flow of vomit.
Politican questions wording in a bill that would make it a felony to be woken up by a blowjob from your wife. Is pilloried mercilessly for his sins.
Well, that's the ultimate consequence of positive consent laws. I wonder if the feminists would allow people to file durable binding permissions, ie let husbands proactively declare that this behavior was OK? Women wouldn't be able to file those, of course, because THAT'S DIFFERENT.
I would guess they wouldn't, because "consent can be withdrawn at any time, so this preapproval is meaningless".
Can a male appeal a withdrawal of consent to the consent review committee?
These people are such insane, naive, sex hating freaks. Have they never once in their lives had a boyfriend or girlfriend wake them up with sex? How sad and lonely and pathetic these people must be to want to criminalize something that good.

King Abdullah is personally going to bomb ISIL into oblivion
Okay, I gotta admit... that's pretty bad ass!
That would be badass, but I bet his privy council (or whoever) are shitting themselves about that in case something were to go wrong.
From the sex trafficking article [edited for brevity]:
One day in 1998, when Janet was 23, she was walking home from her factory job when a car pulled up beside her. "Hi, my name is Ricardo," the man inside the car said. "Can I accompany you?"
"No," Janet said. "I don't know you."
The man persisted and asked if they could be friends. When they reached Janet's home, she finally said OK, they could be friends.
In July 1999, after knowing Ricardo for a little more than year, Janet agreed to move in with his family in Tenancingo, leaving her daughter in the care of her grandmother. But when she arrived, she learned that his name was Antonio, not Ricardo, and that he was a pimp...
After six months, Janet decided to leave Antonio, but discovered she was pregnant and stayed. ...Antonio forced Janet to take pills so she would have a miscarriage. She did. Weeks later, he told her she had to become a prostitute. At first she protested, saying she had worked a good job in a factory and could find work like that again. But he insisted, and eventually she gave in.
no comment
'I was totally sex trafficked. I mean, I was always actually free to leave and I made the choice to move in with this guy after finding he was a pimp and also he told me to work as a prostitute and I agreed.
Why does no one care about all that time I spent as a sex slave?'
Also, given the rest of that story, I wonder how she was 'forced' to take pills to have a miscarriage. I imagine the forcing went like this:
Ricardo: "Janet, take these abortion pills."
Janet: "I don't wanna."
Ricardo: "Janet, whatever am I going to do with you, you little minx?"
Janet: "Okay, I'll do it."
And that's how Janet was forced to have an abortion.
There are cases where this is true. I know someone who went to the police twice, and was told both times that there was nothing they could do. She ran from the guy, he tracked her down and tortured her. He was particularly fond of using stun guns on her. There were two of them. The other girl committed suicide.
Remedy: see 2nd Amendment
Antonio still promised they would get married, and he told Janet he was sending the money she earned back to Mexico, where someone was building them a house. Antonio's cousins told their victims similar lies to keep them hoping and in line.
WEll, I for one believe it. People make horrible decisions EVERY FUCKING DAY. I personally wish that I wasn't as fat as I am and that I had gotten an IT degree. But I MUST HAVE BEEN PIMPED!!!
Also, robbing women of their agency does them no service. And WOMEN make horrible decisions about men every fucking millisecond. I am okay with this woman being held accountable for her horrible taste in men.
Two different articles (or maybe just 1.5 articles) on the practice of referring to women as "females" both fail to identify which part of our culture is overwhelmingly responsible for the practice.
6 Reasons You Should Stop Referring To Women As "Females" Right Now
The Problem With Calling Women 'Females'
But... men are males?
They'd never use "male" to refer to men.
I have a theory that SF is a Jezebel writer and just uses us to get hits.
That doesn't excuse him for linking to buzzfeed, which is like a giant glob of engine grease thrown onto the the tracks of the current societal decline.
Excellent analogy.
It's amazing how this tripe is getting mainstreamed.
"WHEN the Himalayan peasant meets the he-bear in his pride,
He shouts to scare the monster, who will often turn aside.
But the she-bear thus accosted rends the peasant tooth and nail.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.
When Nag the basking cobra hears the careless foot of man,
He will sometimes wriggle sideways and avoid it if he can.
But his mate makes no such motion where she camps beside the trail.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male."
No female, eh? Well, shemale is taken. Anmale? Posimale? Femininally inclined male?
also known as "we like to bitch about stuff" syndrome.
How odd. English is chock-full of usages like that. Obviously, no person in their right mind [peers over glasses at Jezebel for a meaningful moment] would think the usage refers to anything other than female humans. Interestingly, these same people almost certainly refer to Indians as Native Americans (ADJECTIVE! RUN AWAY!) and so on.
Remember that these are also the people who have a near violent over-reaction to synecdoches.
Refer to the entire lady business as a "vagina" and they will froth for dozens of comments.
I'm going to make it a point to nounify adjectives. Maybe calling women "vaginals"?
You just wanted to make a "Reason polling 'vaginals'" joke, didn't you?
Millennial vaginals? That sounds like a Warty Hugeman story gone horribly, horribly wrong.
"The Million Millennial Vaginals March"
They should put vaginals in all of the XX bathrooms.
These females are speciests. I personally identify myself as a female dolphin and am horribly offended when I am so rudely called a woman. If we truly seek equality, everyone should be referred to as "it" until we know specifically what they self identify as.
I read both issues and have come to the conclusion that whoever wrote those two articles(if you count a collage as an article) is either a drooling retard or desperate for material.
All I have to say is that it better be a motherfucking huge bus.
My apologies if someone has already posted this, but I think it's awesome:
