Andrew Cuomo Rebukes Teachers Unions: 'Don't Say You Represent the Students'
Democrats everywhere have had enough of teachers unions

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had some harsh words for teachers unions in a recent interview with the New York Daily News:
"If (the public) understood what was happening with education to their children, there would be an outrage in this city," Cuomo said. "I'm telling you, they would take City Hall down brick by brick.
"It's only because it's complicated that people don't get it."
Cuomo referred to the teacher unions and the entrenched education establishment as an "industry" that is more interested in protecting the rights of its members than improving the system for the kids it is supposed to be serving.
"Somewhere along the way, I believe we flipped the purpose of this," Cuomo said. "This was never a teacher employment program and this was never an industry to hire superintendents and teachers.
"This was a program to educate kids." …
He said he openly disagreed with a teacher union member who said he represents the students.
"No, you don't," Cuomo said he told the person. "You represent the teachers. Teacher salaries, teacher pensions, teacher tenure, teacher vacation rights. I respect that. But don't say you represent the students."
The fact that this fiery anti-union tirade passed the lips of a blue state Democrat tells you everything you need to know about just how thoroughly teaches union have alienated many of their natural political allies. And this isn't merely some quirk of New York politics, as the same thing has happened on a local scale in numerous cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and Los Angeles. Democratic politicians everywhere are more willing to take on teachers unions than ever before.
I suspect that's because they recognize the long-term unsustainability of this alliance. Teachers unions have continued to extort delusional concessions from lawmakers and taxpayers, even as their leaders' antics grow more distracting and hateful. Their demands are so unreasonable, so out of step with the very moderate package of school reforms that a growing consensus of politicians on the left and right now support, even people like Cuomo and former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg—who are not exactly friends of libertarianism—can't help but object to the shrill divisiveness of Michael Mulgrew, Karen Lewis, Steven Cook, etc.

We'll just see how long this divorce lasts as more Democrats are losing seats and the only way to reverse the slide as they see it is more union dues funneled to campaigns.
They're losing seats in part because of arrangements like the one this divorce ends. I think this is a paradigm-shift.
Seriously, you think $ will bring in more votes? Politics is already saturated with $, you can't stuff any more into it that'd have any effect.
They think that. And soliciting donations is easier than changing your ideology.
Well of course teachers unions don't represent students. They're teachers unions.
I guess we need more student unions then.
How many Student Unions do you need? The food at my college Student Union was awful, and it was a terrible place to study.
In Europe, where they act a bit more union-y, they are also insanely left wing. They go full communist quite often
The same seems to be true often in Canada, and occasionally the US. University student unions seem to act like like little commissariats with the training wheels still on, with power hungry leftists taking over and using their vague undefined authority to try to foist ludicrous anti-free speech, ant-due process, all round totalitarian policies on campus, usually without a peep from the administration.
I would love to believe his intentions are pure, but I don't. There's a hidden nut punch in this, somewhere.
"It's only because it's complicated that people don't get it."
Somehow, I think this is a clue to that.
You're probably right, but I'm going to sit back and enjoy it for now. This looks like another epic battle with Comrade De Blasio in the making.
Now that Sheldon Silver has been indicted for bribery, and the prosecutor is hinting at more shoes dropping, the fact that Cuomo set up a corruption commission and then abruptly disbanded it is looking more and more odd. Perhaps he's trying to build up some cred with NY Republicans ahead of a scandal?
I heard that the indictment of Silver made it easier for Cuomo to push his education reforms.
As good of people as Jews are supposed to be, they have some of the most corrupt politicians in modern history. Does anyone remember that fucking dirtbag Joe Lieberman? How this guy does not always make the top 5 list of enemies of freedom, I have no idea.
Barry Goldwater?
the fact that Cuomo set up a corruption commission and then abruptly disbanded it is looking more and more odd.
He disbanded the Moreland Commission because it was getting too close to dscovering his corruptitude.
What's a NY Republican?
New York State Senate is currently 32(R)/31(D), Assembly is 106(D)/44(R).
Agreed. And it's hardly a nut-punch, or hidden. The man is a Democrat. He may be willing to bad-mouth the Teachers' Union, but when the carmeras are looking the other way (and you know those cameras will be oh so discrete) he will be back down with the knee pads and the mouthwash.
No, Cuomo's the kind of Asshole who expects everyone to worship him. NYSUT and it's associates didn't, so he's gone full on retribution against them.
He used to work in my building, so I experienced him and his posse in the elevator from time to time. This sounds about right.
OT: Blizzard expected on the East Coast and NE Monday night into Tuesday. 18-24 inches of snow.
Get a generator and stock up on food and booze, people.
Where's a global warming, bitches?
my global warming....
You don't know the difference between climate and weather. Climate is when conditions agree with us, weather is when it doesn't. This is clearly weather!
/the church of the cult of global warming
54?F and sunny in N. Idaho today. ~20? warmer than normal. I heart GW!
76 out here in the Southern California desert. Tomorrow a high of 60 and rain 🙁
Typically filthy libertarian kochtipalist. Thinking you can own global warming.
That's like, the whole world's warming. To share, man.
Here in Alberta. Outrageously warmer than seasonal.
24-36 where I live.
The perfect time for me to sit back and watch the government fail at plowing my street.
My town does a better job plowing the back roads than the state does at plowing the highway. This should be fun. =)
Will it be a SNOWPOCALYPSE?
I have a feeling I'll still be called to go to work on Tuesday, unless all of the subway lines are down. I was already planning to hit up the liquor store tomorrow.
Yes, SNOWPOCALYPSE is imminent. Prepare or die. NYC is odd. All the rail lines from LI, up-state and Jersey get frozen over but the subways still work.
Yeah, the subway has never gone out in a snowstorm in my experience. Heavy rain can knock it out, however.
It's water that shorts out the subway rail, so snow isn't a problem. The only time I have also seen weather-related subway failure was insane downpours. It's very annoying when you get to the 86th St station and see people trudging out en mass because there is water literally waterfalling down the steps and the subway is out.
After Hurricane Sandy the entire subway system was out for.... 4-5 days? something like that.
There were maybe 2-dozen occasions between 2000-2010 when the L train-tunnel was shut down due to rain flooding... but that was only between brooklyn/manhattan, and I think most of the rest of the system was unaffected. Maybe a few other high-risk sections like that.
Snow? I don't recall causing any major system problems, but again - there were always some sections shutting down temporarily for a day or two. Just because. I think the G train has problems if the pollen count is too high.
Here in Balmer, I saw that we are supposed to get 3-5 here in the outlying highlands I got excited that we would get off work, until I looked and saw that the harbor is only getting 1 inch or less. Damn climate change isn't working.
Sweet. My office is all Jersey soccer dads so they drop everything at the first sign of snow and head for the Park 'n' Rides. Might get to sneak out early tomorrow.
Beer has food value, but food does not have beer value.
Get lots of beer.
So what about Greece's libertarian moment?
Syriza has promised to change all of that, pledging immediate relief to the poor, rolling back unpopular taxes and negotiating a debt write-down with the country's creditors to free up spending on social programs.
"Socialism got us into this mess, so the solution is obviously... more socialism!"
According to Syriza, "hope has won"; The Guardian reported bank runs Friday.
Socialism is "hope," all right. Nothing but hope.
More like a 'triumph of the will.'
Look at all that fucking austerity!
Only in the leftist fantasia could an increase of debt from 94% to 170% in 15 years be considered a period of austerity.
It should have gone 500%! Austerity!
Well, partly is that their GDP cratered.
And apparently they balanced the budget, if you don't count the debt repayments.
Can we kick them out now? Please?
/Germany
Kinda hoping the Germans leave the euro, go back to the mark; that'll put the whole thing down. Of course everyone (including a lot of Germans) will call Germany Nazis for doing so, because having your own currency is basically prelude genociding minorities, as everyone knows.
Are you going back to being a tiresome cunt? Can you please not stick 'libertarian moment' in places where it does not belong in order to look 'edgy' and 'profound'?
In any event, I think this will trigger a chain reaction in Europe that will end with libertarian-endorsed policies coming to be across parts of the continent, while other parts become fascistic or socialistic hellholes, which they would anyway.
Um...
Can you please not stick 'libertarian moment' in places where it does not belong
In any event, I think this will trigger a chain reaction in Europe that will end with libertarian-endorsed policies coming to be across parts of the continent
Yes? Is there anything wrong with my statement? There is no contradiction and if you think there is you need to read better.
Translated Cuomo:
Hey you teacher peasants! You cutting into my stash! You know all those tax payer dollars we got? Well, those are mine! Now get back in line, plebes! When I've done decided what my share is, then I'll divide up the crumbs for you. You fuckers are almost as bad as people who don't even work for the government in thinking that your money is your own!
I thought that ASU was a seething hive of Marxism when I was attending, and I've complained here before about now being able to get a degree in Social Justice and Human Rights, which a friend of mine has, and I can assure you it's basically a degree in regurgitating ThinkProgress articles.
That wasn't enough, though, so now you can take a course in Studies in American Literature/Culture: U.S. Race Theory & the Problem of Whiteness, a true step forward towards that progressive post-racial society where people are judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
and I've complained here before about now being able to get a degree in Social Justice and Human Rights, which a friend of mine has, and I can assure you it's basically a degree in regurgitating ThinkProgress articles.
So what you're saying is that we're spending tax payer dollars to create more Tonys?
Yeah, unfortunately for that plan, not everyone can work in academia, nonprofits, and government agencies if you want that whole industrial civilization thing to keep rolling. (Response I've heard to that: that's why we need a guaranteed minimum income, hyuk hyuk.)
Ok, lets eliminate the entire bureaucracy, that should ensure that we can afford to mail the retards like Tony a check every month without breaking the bank.
I remember when the occuturds were setting up websites to whine on one of the little shits held up a sign that said he had 300k in student loan debts and a masters in some social justice bullshit but could not find a job. He said that corporations didn't appreciate his academic accomplishments.
What the fuck are we going to do with these people? We are stuck with them.
I know. And they vote.
Put them in a position where they have to work. It will break them.
Europe used to have this thing called the manorial system. But can we not revive it here?
My favorite was the Occutard who gave up his teaching position to get a Masters in Puppetry.
Four hours and not one Metallica reference? Did I just get old or something?
I've contemplated burning my degree from there from time to time. ASU has really gone down the shitlib rabbit hole.
'Problem of whiteness." Yeah, that's not genocidal language.
From the MASJHR link:
I don't think "Think Tank that lobbies for more government" counts as nongovernmental.
No shit, Andy. Now do the cops.
Dear Andy-
You might want to read and consider this.

So, I'm watching that bastion of science called H2 and they're saying that some of our founders were sexual perverts who regularly participated in orgies. Specifically the bespectacled one by the name of Franklin. Damn, the founders were even more libertarian that I thought? I wonder if he had sex slave wiminz to polish his monocles? Now I really need to know if Jefferson was there, because I already really admire the guy. Right now I'm drinking a Scheiderweise Heffe with a lemon slice out of a Monticello Star Hill brewery glass. If only I knew that orphan slave children polished this glass...
So what I got from that is that we need to invent a time machine.
If you make it either in the form of a Delorean or a Blue Police Box, you will sell more of them due to the cult fanbase.
What, a hot tub's not good enough for you?
Now they're talking about the founders growing weed. Although I think that they may be getting hemp confused with the strain of plant that contained thc enough to get you high. Although now they are saying that the founders all smoked weed. Well, it's the History Channel. I wonder if the founders got their herb from aliens?
I'm not saying it's aliens, but.....
They built the pyramids ya know?
I thought they got it from the Nazis.
Definitely the Nazis. Gotta be da Nazis.
Jooze.
For all we know, the "orgies" Franklin attended consisted of lots of drinking and watching a woman dance with her ankles uncovered.
Cuomo: terrible eco-pandering idiot on fracking; bold leader of education reform. Hmmmm. What is going on here? Did he placate the greens so preserve political capital for his WAR ON TEACHERS?
Banning fracking was terrible, and totally worth the price of education reform if that is what it takes. We can always frack later. Reforming America's broken education system is far more important than fracking.
Mark Steyn gives a great speech on free speech.
You can safely skip the first minute or so where Steyn makes lame jokes. It gets good after that.
Fucking brilliant. Thanks for that, Irish.
The Eurotards had better suck it up and put a stop to this shit, or their future is going to be wearing burquas.
Europe's future is far more imperiled by their state than by Islam. The 'Islamification of Europe' is an urban myth.
In any case, the massive immigration the Europeans' own fault. The immigrants are just filling a vacuum. Besides, most Europeans seem to hate their own cultures, so how can they expect the newcomers to respect them.
It was shoved down the throats of the Europeans by their "betters" in government. If you did anything to oppose it you were called a "racist" and maybe even put on trial.
Would be more compelling if Mark Steyn didn't have a history of advocating for construction bans on mosques.
"The fact that this fiery anti-union tirade passed the lips of a blue state Democrat tells you everything you need to know about just how thoroughly teaches union have alienated many of their natural political allies"
Another way of looking at it = Blue State Democrats have learned to pretend to appear as though they're fighting with Teachers Unions and other shadow-government, entrenched interests.... while inevitably co-operating with them to achieve maximal revenue from the State & minimizing any threat to their control over institutions.
I just think "things politicians say" are far less significant than "things politicians do"
The 'reforms' that Cuomo wants aren't exactly 'union backbreakers' =
"The governor proposed the changes in his fifth State of the State address Wednesday in Albany. The plan also calls for increasing the number of charter schools allowed to 560 from 460.
If the legislature approves the measures, Cuomo said, he would add about $800 million in school funding to the spending plan for the year beginning April 1"
I submit = if you give me the thick end of a billion dollars, I will also willingly submit to some public criticism, and some minor 'reforms'... if it means 10 years of complaisance until anyone bothers to check and see how those 'reforms' are working out.
I think you are missing the forest for the trees. If Team Blue is jumping in on the reform train even in an insincere way, it means not only that the reformists are winning but now political rhetoric aimed at the education establishment is harder to discredit as 'extreme'. "Cuomo said the same thing how's that extreme?"
The expansion of charters can absolutely be a union breaker. They are a form of kryptonite to the teacher's unions.
You don't know NY, and you aren't taking into consideration that this kind of "reform" environment is cyclical.
I'm not surprised Cuomo would start pretending to be 'anti-institutional' when you've got people protesting cops in the streets, cops protesting the mayor, and the speaker of the legislature arrested in manhattan...
the point is that 'talk is cheap'. And that the actual 'reforms' are generally designed to be compromised into painlessness.
Its sort of like Obama's declaration of how he bravely "ended the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan"...
..on exactly the same timetable for drawdowns that had been in place prior to his ever even running for president.
If teachers unions accede to any changes its because they're calculated to be worth it in the longer run. So there are a few new charters; big deal. The union employs over 600,000 people. If Obama gets his universal Pre-K, and Community College money-toilet plans in place, they stand to benefit enormously.
Entrenched interests like the Teachers Unions know that periodically you have to trim and adapt to serve a political narrative.
If you look at the big picture, i fail to see how the Democrat/Teachers Union alliance is weakening at all. Its just changing the way it markets itself to the public. There will be a lot of Kibuki-theater drama over minor 'cuts' and token 'reforms'; all while (as noted) the overall Price Tag goes UP
To be fair, he's been making similar noises since he was elected. But yeah, talk is cheap.
We may have to agree to sort of disagree without really being in much disagreement (The Hit 'n Run Way) but there is no way Obama is getting his universal pre-K or free community college. His presidency is basically over in terms of what he can do so now he's just engaged in consequences-free fantasizing.
"there is no way Obama is getting his universal pre-K or free community college"
I think you miss the point of these issues being discussed in the first place.
The point was to emphasize that Teachers Unions still have Democrat politician's balls in their back pockets, and that their personal "Wish Lists" are made National Agendas even when they make no fucking sense at all.
Even if they don't get what they want - the fact that their crony political servants keep getting elected is a sign of their power.
And just because they don't get everything on their wishlist doesn't mean they won't get a lot. Congress will reject Obama's idiotic ideas, but they may feel pressured by fear of the public seeing them as the grinch into giving into something not as big, but still substantial. They know that demanding too much and throwing a fit over it is the best way to insure you don't walk away empty handed.
The free community college proposal was stupid. I actually wish Obama stands strong on more funding for preK. I am libertarian more on the grown ups. But for kids, we need to do better as a community and I would rather pump in some money to give every single kid a decent chance of escaping bad family situations/neighborhoods.
If only teachers could somehow remove the students from the equation - then Cuomo would have a union he could be proud of.
Doesn't Greece have some really high tax evasion? Yet how many of them voted for SYRIZA? Do they not vote or do most them have a "I've got my stuff so fuck you!" attitude?
Italy and Latin America have the same problem too. They think the government is incompetent and corrupt and they want to ignore taxes and regulations but they want more free shit from everyone else apparently.
The peoplw who voted for Syriza are probably the people who think the government is going to go after people wealther than they are.
You were fine about the taxes until 'they want more free shit from everyone else'.
I can speak more for Italy in that a combo of low birth rates, tax evasion, restrictive labor laws all conspire to keep growth low to pay for a generous welfare state. Not a good mix.
Welfare across Europe is pretty much topped off.
Italy gives to the EU budget just as much as Britain and France and doesn't take in anywhere near what Poland, Greece, and Spain take in.
I consistently see Italy grouped with those countries for some reason.
NONE of those countries have an economy like Italy.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/fin.....spent.html
I see Italy grouped with Spain, but not usually Poland. That may be a stretch. Perhaps I should increase my regard for Italy, move it up France-level, or 'not quite as bad as Spain and Greece, but still not good.'
Oh let me help you along. Italy is NOT in the Spain group.
It's absolutely on the France level. They make up the 'Big four' of the G7 and an important founding member of the EU. The Italian economy produces and offers much more from a technological, engineering and luxury perspective.
And neither are in great shape.
I purposely call it the G7.
Russia. Yeah...right!
Mind you, not so sure the G7 or P5 mean anything anymore.
Well, it's the History Channel. I wonder if the founders got their herb from aliens?
They got it from Time Traveling Hitler.
duh
Hitler was on the History channel in the 80s.
Now it's Aliens and Templars.
They still occasionally have Nazis, but in the context of 'Nazis and the occult.' In other words, Nazis and the Illuminati conspiring to hide Eichmann from the vengeful Norse Gods who have allied themselves with the aliens.
I ?KNEW? it.

When I tried to post this, it said it was not written in English. The squirrels are getting more and more clever.
If the legislature approves the measures, Cuomo said, he would add about $800 million in school funding to the spending plan for the year beginning April 1"
Finally, someone is willing to step forward to end the decades of neglect to which the American educational system has been subjected.
This would not occur had teacher's union not alienated significant portions of the electorate.
Of course
I love my Union but they don't represent, work for, advocate for- the people I serve.
They work for US
Now sure, sometimes when they support an officer(s) it benefits the public, and sometimes not
When Cslifotnia teachers unions fought (to include pressuring legislators) tooth and nail against he schooling rights, that obviously worked against students although some would disagree
The bigorati think unions knee jerk support accused cops but that's just not true
Initially, of course they will, but countless times when the facts support 'letting a guy go' unions go along with that... As long as due process rights are observed
Unlike a defense attorney who
ALWAYS advocates for a client (by law) our unions will not when they think the officer does not deserve it
We... Are... Winning
And DeBlasio is still an assjacket and got what he deserved
The mayoralty?
To all the derpo's who say 'but Dunphy the reason people hate the cops...'
Although less so since I gave schooled bigots on poll facts
'WTVO/WQRF -- according to the latest 'Rasmussen Results' poll.
The national telephone survey finds that 67% of American adults rate the performance of the police in the area where they live as good or excellent. Just 9% say they are doing a poor job.
67% also believe the average police officer is a protector of the average citizen. Only 11% see the average cop as a threat. 16% say the average policeman is neither a protector nor a threat.'

From Wikipedia:
The White, non-Hispanic or Latino population make up 62.6% of the (US)nation's total.
[Later] A third significant minority is the Asian American population, comprising 13.4 million in 2008, or 4.4% of the U.S. population.
About 12.4% of Americans (37.6 million, including about 885,000 Hispanic or Latino) identify as Black or African American.
Coincidence?
If Dunphy can't pick cherries, how's he gonna do those stretches?
All that says to me is that 67% of Americans have neither been a victim of a serious crime nor been accused of a crime.
Or don't trust "anonymous" surveys?
Why do libertarians hate the Cops? They aren't slaveowners.
Go back to your staring contest with your TV.

Let me know if you see it, otherwise I'll probably post it again....
If the donks turn on the teacher's unions it won't be long before the phants become their champions.
What a breath of fresh air Cuomo is. After decades of politicians from both sides of the fence (I'm talking to you Pataki) kowtowing to teachers' union demands, and we the taxpayers footing the bill, Cuomo had the hutzpah to say 'enough.' It's all over teachers. Get used to living like the rest of us do - namely perform, or go bye-bye.
WJM, I'd be careful there. What Cuomo has done so far is say some words. As a friend pointed out years ago, 'talk's cheap; takes money to buy booze'.
So when Cuomo *does* something, you and we may have reason to celebrate.
Not yet.
lol, US Politics. Best politics money can buy.
http://www.BestAnon.tk
I personally know a couple in a north east suburb who were both teaches at the same school. Neither had extensive time in the system and one has since left to return to their prior vocation. Their combined salary, per open records search? $210K. Granted, not all districts pay so well but I am well tired of 'teach is under paid' bs.
As to younger Cuomo - it seems more and more likely he is gearing up for a run in 2016.
Some teachers are underpaid, some are overpaid. I am sympathetic to the plight of some teachers. They get a raw deal. But that's the problem. if the unions insist on seniority as the only way to give a pay raise, you lose out on the good teachers.
The teachers unions overplayed their hand. I consider myself as someone who is sympathetic to a mix of liberal and libertarian ideas. And even the liberal side of me just can't stand the crap that comes from these teachers unions. Granted, there are several cases of bad superintendents and principals shafting teachers. Having said that, isn't that a big part of conventional public education which the unions do not want reformed? So how can you help them if they are unwilling to reform a system parts of which they complain about ?
Ifthere was more school choice , schools in the same area would be willing to hire and reward better teachers (just like universities go after the top professors) and that is a merit pay in itself(word of mouth). But the unions refuse to consider ANY kind of metric or system to reward better teachers.
The basis for this is what can't be said. It is the same as every government entity - those with the ability to chose will get the hell out of the black and Hispanic areas as soon as they are able.
Nobody in the LAPD wants south central LA. You want the West San Fernando Valley. You have a mountain separating you from LA proper and you are in the second most affluent part of LA. many officers never pull their weapon for years.
This is funny coming from a guy who has spent his whole life surrounded by people who don't give a shit about anybody but their co-workers - government employees.
I can see you fitting in well with the intellectual black hole that is the NYT commentariat. A ture bastion of stupidity.
Federalism and states rights are literally the same thing.
Like, people who support federalism are the same people who support states rights. The people who don't support states rights are against federalism because they'd prefer a unitary state.
So how can you have Federalism vs. States rights when they're essentially the same thing and are supported by the same people?
Progressives will be forced to pick black kids or teachers
Such a hard choice. One group has money and power backed by law and the other group has nothing.
I hope that was sarcasm. I didn't think his comment was turd-like.
Hihn is a turd by default. If he says something that is not turd-like, it's an accident. Maybe you have not read a lot of his comments.
Hihn is normally insane.
I have seen much of his stuff (not his junk). That comment seemed well-formed, though.
I guess turds can be well-formed too.
Aaaaanyway, I agree with him that the Battle of the Progressives will be pretty funny, though.
Oh hush, let the giant boner-gasbag have a free pass.
I always thought that the word "federalism" was not a very good name for that. I get the historical context, but the word sucks.
I was going to post the same thing, except there is the 18th century federalism vs anti-federalism.
No, "X is not a power of the federal government" and "X is a power of the state government" are not even close to the same thing unless you add in a BIG starting assumption.
Honestly. I'm willing to give him a break, when he is not being condescending, and insulting.
"...libertarians, live entirely in a partisan echo chamber, where the sun always shines, nobody ever disagrees, and they all praise each other."
You don't read the comments here, do you?
Do you read the NYT regularly? Because if so you know you have to read it for about 15 years to come up with as many sensible pieces as you've cited. And the comments are 99% leftist drivel. You can't make a comment, however evidenced and courteous, without a throng of idiots accusing you of 'siding with the plutocrats.' I've seen too many comments section where it was a matter of consensus that people only oppose Obama because he's black, or Clinton because he's a woman, or minimum wage because they want to starve the poor, to believe the median IQ is above 80 in that community. Plus Arthur Sulzberger Jr. is a piece of shit. He used his paper to gave voice (and positive publicity) to bigots like Andrea Dworkin and Marlyn French, both of whom deserve to be remembered like Otto Weiniger and Alfred Rosenberg.
Best thing I can say about the NYT is that it's not as bad as Salon.
The walls of text are getting longer, and bolder. Run away.
States Rights was invented by southern racists
Cool story lies bro.
incredibly, states have powers delegated by NOBODY
Or, you know, by their own constitutions.
You just can't help yourself, can you Hihn.
"States Rightists claim that powers not delegated to the federal government are reserved to the states. Incredibly, states have powers delegated by NOBODY ? according to libertarians."
1) No, the constitution claims this. Almost in those exact words.
2) Ron Paul and your maligned states righters have valid positions. Their belief is that, if the federal government gets to overrule state laws on gay marriage, they will also try to overrule state laws on other things; maybe they'll attack states with right to work laws; maybe they'll attack state laws you actually like some day?
Contrary to your bullshit narrative about southern racists inventing the idea that the federal government should limit its intervention in state legislation, many leading advocates of judicial restraint in the 20th century were FDR appointed progressives (see http://reason.com/blog/2015/01.....ists-switc)
The federal government and the courts have overstepped their boundaries more than enough times for this position of judicial restraint to be justified. Hell, if the federal government had its way, we would all be required to pay for every woman in this country's abortions. Many want us to imitate France, which requires them to cover homeopathic 'medicine' and spa treatment. We know they would do away with right to work laws if they could. Your trust in the federal government defies rationality.
And to think I stood up for you.
You'll never change!

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
The other side of the Mobius strip.
The moderates will lose, they almost always do. The hardcore progs may face temporary setbacks, but they're true believers, so they're never going to stop and accept defeat. Their opponents, on the other hand are selfish and are only resisting the unions because they're hurting their own particular pet projects.
Mys suspicion is that, when pressed with the right talking points and guilted enough for defecting to the 'side of the Koch brothers', a typical 'anti-union' prog will duly repent his apostasy. Those who don't will find themselves increasingly lonely. And in 40 years NYC may look like Detroit.

"Honestly. I'm willing to give him a break, when he is not being condescending, and insulting."
So, pretty much forget it?
"?runs away crying?"
Don't bother. Just point out that Mike is a blithering idiot who lives in the past.
It pisses him off.
Yeah. Looking down thread you will see that he is back to acting like a jerk. After reading his first post I did have a glimmer o hope. =)
So true.
