Police and Protesters Anxiously Await Ferguson Grand Jury Announcement
Police, residents, and protesters prepare and hope

Local officials are bracing for unrest following the impending announcement of a grand jury's decision on whether or not to indict Darren Wilson for killing Michael Brown. Last night, for the fourth night in a row, police made arrests in front of the Ferguson police station. On Friday, police arrested protesters for blocking traffic, and these arrests came on the heels of five protester arrests reported Wednesday and three more reported on Thursday.
Friday, city and county leaders held a press conference to discuss their plans for handling unrest resulting from the grand jury decision. This seemed to lend credibility to the theory that a decision will be announced shortly, as did announcements today from local school districts that classes have been cancelled for Monday and Tuesday next week.
Speculation has run rampant in recent days and weeks, with the well-established and "very credible" sources of local reporters consistently contradicting each other. On Friday, various reports claimed with near certainty that a decision would be released that afternoon (needless to say, it was not). The best guesses of the more credible reporters and sources seem to indicate a decision is likely in the next seventy-two hours, but it's worth noting that some of those same folks were sure a decision would be announced on November 16.
One thing is certain—everybody is preparing. Protesters have been preparing for months, and have held a number of training sessions. Law enforcement has been training too, with the governor of Missouri reporting that over 1,000 officers each received five hours of additional training since Michael Brown's death. Governor Nixon also preemptively activated the National Guard this past Monday, a decision criticized by some elected officials as illegal and counterproductive.

Saturday in Clayton, at the Buzz Westfall Justice Center where grand juries convene in Saint Louis County, workers erected barricades around nearly an entire city block. The roads in front of the Justice Center have been closed, and workers even removed all the trash bins from nearby streets.
I heard a consistent refrain of "hope for the best; prepare for the worst" from law enforcement I spoke with today. Many expressed they'd never dealt with anything like the Ferguson unrest, and nearly all I interacted with seemed quite tense.

Protesters were more relaxed. In fact, many seemed downright exhausted by the 106 days that have passed since Michael Brown was killed. Constant unrest has devastated local businesses, with some reporting a 75 percent decline in sales since August, and protesters have reported symptoms of PTSD. There was a consensus among those I spoke with that their movement was about a lot more than an indictment of Darren Wilson, as well as a consensus among those I spoke with that no indictment was coming.
Eugene Gillis, a pastor at a local black church who has been involved in the civil rights struggle for decades, hopes recent events in Ferguson can further a larger struggle for justice. "Everything that's been done helps." he said. "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."

Remember, kids, if we don't like what you have to say, you're going to prison! Have a nice day!
Mayor Daley would be proud.
Why the fuck has this taken so long? Has the prosecutor locked the grand jury up until they arrive at the conclusion he wants?
It's enlightening to see how much our political "leaders" fear the general populace.
Speaking of enlightening, Ghouliani is on Meet the Press. I can't wait to hear what noxious authoritarianism he spouts.
I believe after the first world trade center bombing he made the decision to place the emergency command center in 7 world trade, which as we learned was a great idea. He is a security expert! And handsome!
His 2008 campaign was so bad it was entertaining to follow. And in a very weak GOP field at that.
The general populace goes to vote and stand for elections every 2 years; about 7% of Ferguson's black voters bothered to vote in local elections and there were few or no black candidates. That's what "the general populace" thinks: they largely don't care.
The mobs on the streets of Ferguson do not represent "the general populace". In fact, historically, mobs on the street usually are representative of "noxious authoritarianism": it's so much easier to ship in a few thousand demonstrators and hooligans than to actually convince voters.
I would suggest you stand in front of that "populance" with a police uniform on and see just how little there is to fear from these "protestors/rioters." Hahahah
Cops are paranoid assholes, this means nothing.
Whose side is the Peanut Gallery on? The cop or the guy he shot?
That's the way your mind works, isn't it?
That's the way you see every political fight, too! Which side are all of you on--president Obama's or the religious right?
How long have you been here, now?
We're on the side of liberty and justice.
Yep, Weigel is a seriously mentally disturbed individual. He's the kind of sicko who's hoping to see St. Louis get burned down to the ground. A truly despicable individual.
Hi mind, doesn't *work*.
Will you ever just shut the fuck up, PB?
Not so long as you keep feeding it with your comments.
Your abuse is to it as sugar to an ant.
I've got this image in my head now, Thank you so very much, of a ginger dweeb drooling and chewing on his computer monitor while mumbling "yesss. . .yesss. . .feed me morrrrrre!"
Blergh.
It's never going to happen. Number one, he's seriously fucked up in the head. Number two, doing what he does here is his job.
Sumthin, sumthin...tin foil hat.
Yes.
On the side of the Grand Jury and the courts. They have the facts and I trust they'll make a reasonable decision.
"Constant unrest has devastated local businesses, with some reporting a 75 percent decline in sales since August, and protesters have reported symptoms of PTSD."
Trying to pathologize that is really just trivializing it.
In fact, the politician who said that should be mocked. The idea that what the protestors of Ferguson really need is a troop of counselors so they can talk about their feelings is ludicrous.
How 'bout some justice instead?
The police should be out offering the protesters hot soup and coffee and blankets in front of the cameras. Why not, it can't hurt anything.
That state legislator made it sound like a commercial for ObamaCare. She probably meant well--instead of tear gas and batons, these people need...professions trauma counselors?
Like I said, how 'bout some liberty and justice.
I lived and worked on the edge of South Central during the LA riots. The LAPD was brutal to the black community. They're saying Ferguson is about more than one case? I believe that. The LA riots were about a lot more than Rodney King, too.
It's almost Monty Python worthy, though, to offer people who are undergoing systemic police harassment and brutality some PTSD counseling. Imagine people getting the shit beat out of them by police, while some touchy-feely is putting pressure on them to express their feelings.
I feel sore where I have been beaten.
Right. Daryl Gates knocking down doors for twenty years caused the Rodney King riots.
We can be certain those morons in the Ferguson PD (and the police departments in the surrounding areas) have not exactly been treating everyone they encounte with a high level of respect.
Ghouliani:
If not for the endemic lawlessness of the black race, those poor oppressed white cops wouldn't have to be out there on the street gunning them down.

Your friend's step-sister is a whore. I blew a load in her mouth last night.
The police should be out offering the protesters hot soup and coffee and blankets in front of the cameras.
Compassion is weakness!
I work directly across the river from where all of this is happening, and the buzz around here seems to be that the protesters are going to skip town once the decision hits, and scoot over to MY town to cause havoc. Apparently our local police are preparing themselves for a huge wave of rioters, and are urging locals to arm themselves.
It's fucking stupid.
Looks like this RussianPrimeMinister is trying to get some advanced PTSD.
What a complete disaster this situation is, though.
What strikes me the most is the blatant racism this shit has stirred up around here. Several of my co-workers have stated that they're actively looking forward to "killing some niggers" if any rioting takes place in our part of the world.
The race baiters don't have the situation entirely wrong, and it pains me to say that.
What is the situation the race baiters don't have entirely wrong?
Hey me too but you need to narrow it down to which river and which side 🙂
For you yokels not from around here, there's the Mississippi, the Missouri and the Illinois rivers all coming together here so across the river could be east, west or north.
... and protesters have reported symptoms of PTSD.
Give them some Ecstasy.
To be honest, I have not been following this because of all of the apparent stupidity surrounding it (i.e. people taking and twisting every detail to suit their narrative, w/e it may be). What is current popular opinion on the case?
impossible to get a good read on the facts because the police are scumbag liars. Even if it was a "good shoot" no one would believe it.
Unless the decision is "we are going to lock up officer wilson tomorrow"(which it won't be) there will be shenanigans.
That is kinda what I have been assuming. It was all handled wrong from the beginning.
I heard a consistent refrain of "hope for the best; prepare for the worst" from law enforcement I spoke with today. Many expressed they'd never dealt with anything like the Ferguson unrest, and nearly all I interacted with seemed quite tense.
Oh, no. People have stopped reflexively accepting the police version of events as gospel? They are beginning to realize how completely the police have managed to insulate themselves from accountability for their "mistakes"?
The proverbial straw.
+1 brokeback camel
If he's acquitted they're riot in anger, and if he's indicted they're riot for joy.
Either way, windows will be broken and things will be stolen.
It'll be like Denver after a Broncos game.

Somehow, it seems like it would be appropriate for these riots to start on the day that world class thieving guttersnipe Marion Barry croaked.
It has become impossible to read and interact with this website on a tablet/phone. What in the hell happened?
I blame the cosmotarians.
It's the ad software on the main page.
Install Adblock Plus, and a lot of the pain goes away.
How you do that on anything but a windows tablet, I can't say.
If they checked, I suspect they'd find that they're losing more eyeballs because of the ad software than the revenue they're generating is worth.
If, come the Christmas pledge drive, they make a point of promising to get rid of the ad software if only we hit such and such a goal, they might generate more revenue that way than they get from the ad software, too.
????????? ONLINE JOBS ??????????

You are a lying cunt.
"Local officials are bracing for unrest."
Malicious truth or racist statement?
The rest of America should be pissed off about the fact that these yokels in Ferguson aren't getting their act together. The black folks down there vote even less than the white folks, the all-white city government and police force are evidently utterly incompetent, and when they start killing each other, national politicians and "non profits" come in to misuse the situation for their own gain.
It's quite obvious from the evidence released so far that no grand jury would ever indict Wilson, unless it were mostly a Black grand jury, ala OJ's crooked bunch. One lesson is that police cars should have two officers in places as dangerous as the streets of Ferguson, and also be quipped with several video cams so that lying, White hating Blacks can be identified as what they are. Also, I would suggest Tasers at close range - that would have stopped rampaging attackers like Brown when six bullets from a .38 would not. It was only the head shot that stopped Brown.
You know, by announcing the imminent riots in Fergusen, like a week in advance, they certainly gave everyone plenty of notice that riots would be happening, so they could make plans to attend the riots.
I'm just saying.
