Jeb Bush Still Loves Common Core, Blames Obama for 'Co-Opting' It

Jeb Bush has distinguished himself from other potential Republican presidential candidates by remaining steadfastly supportive of the Common Core State Standards Initiative. The former Florida governor likes the standards and thinks that if states have a problem with them, they should propose something even better.
However, just like other supporters of Common Core on the right, Bush recognizes that federal involvement in the issue has given the standards a bad name (deservedly or not). In an interview with Education Next, Bush blamed the Obama administration for all the bad PR Common Core has received:
States are free to modify the Common Core State Standards or adopt their own individual standards, because academic standards are the prerogative of the states.
The opposition to the common core has been mostly fueled by President Obama and his administration attempting to take credit for and co-opt a state-led initiative.
I don't know if "mostly" is a fair description. Many teachers now oppose Common Core because of its standardized testing requirements. But it's certainly true that federal involvement has fueled hostility toward the standards on the right. That's because the Obama administration issued waivers and grants to states in exchange for becoming Core-compliant, effectively ending their ability to decide this important education matter for themselves.
But there is hope! A Republican-controlled Congress could pass an amendment to federal education law prohibiting the federal Department of Education from issuing such bribes to states. This would mean advocates and critics of Common Core could again argue over the actual standards, rather than concentrate on the Obama administration's creeping curriculum nationalization.
It's a reform that both sides could—and have—agreed on.

Or, even better, they could defund and dissolve the DoE completely.
Damn, you beat me to it.
Amen.
hey no mixing your religion with education!
But I agree with you.
Bothvsides have agreed? I'll believe that when Congress passes, and Obama signs, a law embodying that alleged consensus.
Jeb Bush, conservative hero.
I blame the Bushes for co-opting the Republican party.
ugh. Fuck Jeb Bush, if the republicans nominate him for president in 2016 over Paul, Walker, or Cruz I sear will never vote R for the rest of my life.
I honestly don't know much about Jeb Bush other than I don't think people should automatically hate him because they don't like his family. This story, however, makes me think he is a moron.
Of course Obama and the Progs co-opted common core. The Progs own the entire education establishment in this country. They are going to co-opt any set of national education standards no matter how well intended or drafted they are. It is what Progs do. It is also why no conservative in their right minds would ever endorse national education standards. Doing that is effectively handing the Progs complete control over every school in America.
The "national solution" to education is that there is no national solution. Local control is the only solution for a lot of reason. One of the biggest reasons and the reason that Jeb Bush should know best is that, because Progs don't and cannot control many localities in this country, it makes it harder for them to completely control and destroy the education system in this country.
Anyone who believes in the concept of common core is a Prog who sees it for what it is and likes it, woefully uninformed, a complete moron or all three. Since Bush is not likely to be a Prog and was governor of a state and thus likely not that uninformed, I am forced to conclude he is a complete moron who has no business near any kind of authority.
I'm kinda with you on the Bush family thing.
But only kinda. Its very bad for the country to have these crypto-noble families who just pass around government positions.
If it was up to me, serving in an elected position at any level would bar your immediate family from also serving in an elected position at that level.
Three generations of imbeciles is way too many. Two is too many. One is plenty, thanks.
My feelings exactly.
You can not want him to be President and still like him. I don't think you should dislike someone based on the sins of their family.
True. From what I've heard, he's not an awful pol, but there are many people who could probably perform the duties of president who are still disqualified for good reasons, and Jeb Bush is one of them.
This. He was decent as governor of FL, but enough is enough.
He cut taxes, blocked light rail and shrunk government. Not too bad.
Whether you or I like someone or not is completely irrelevant in running a national campaign. The shrieking on the left and the media about another bush running could lead me to commit sepuku.
Are you kidding me? The horror and salty tears of the Left that would result from 8 years of Obama producing another Bush would be fabulous. It is the one compelling reason I have ever heard for electing Jeb President.
Believing a Bush could win a country wide election is beyond pale retarded.
What if the Dems nominate Biden?
What if the Dems nominate Biden?
Or Warren. Also, if Obama doesn't back off and moderate, the Democratic brand may be so damaged that 2016 could be for the Democrats what 2008 was for the Republicans, an election driven by a desire to reject the party of the President such that the opposition candidate is irrelevant.
One managed to win two of them. Beyond that, so what? Believing Thomas Sowell could win a country wide election is probably beyond the pale retarded as well. That, however, doesn't change my opinion that Sowell would make a hell of a great President.
Again, my opinion about what kind of President Jeb Bush would make has nothing to do with the realistic prospects of that happening.
I don't understand why you think one has to do with the other. Moreover, my original point was that his support of common core makes me think he is a moron. Given that, why the hell are you going on and on about how he could never win? It has nothing to do with my point.
Your right, and I apologize for hijacking your comment to make this about Bush's electoral chances.
I was in college during the last Bush administration, so I'm all set on hysterical progressive tears, thanks.
If the Republicans ran Jeb Bush, Just based on his family they should be tarred and feathered. I can't think of a worse idea. Even if Jeb was an anarchist and committed to burning down federal agencies it's an incredibly stupid idea to nominate a Bush.
That is a political calculation. Regardless of that, if you think Bush is a good guy and would make a good President, you shouldn't change your assessment based on his name.
That said, the larger point I was making is that this position makes me think he is a dangerous idiot.
You can't exempt PR problems and dynastic tendencies from your considerations.
Yes I can. Rand Paul is from a political family. I don't hear anyone complaining about that.
If Bush had been a Libertarian leaning President, people on here would be all over Jeb running. And as well they should be.
I think the dynastic considerations are idiotic. I want a good President and really don't care whose family he comes from.
Any comparison between Paul and Bush is ridiculous. And dynastic considerations are not idiotic.
Any comparison between Paul and Bush is ridiculous.
No its not. IN both cases they had fathers who were professional politicians and chose to pursue a career as well. Do you actually think Rand Paul would be a Senator and Presidential prospect right now if his father had been a work a day doctor who never entered politics? Of course not. I like Rand Paul. You are living in a fantasy land if you don't think he is where he is because of who is father is. Paul is a smart guy and a good politician. But there are a ton of smart people out there who would make good politicians. It takes more than just that.
I don't hold that against Paul and I don't hold Jeb's father or brother against him either.
This is funny. I write a paragraph long rant about how this position indicates Jeb Bush is a moron and you guys are attacking me for noting hating him enough.
It is like the very word BUSH!! has the power to make you people retarded or something.
" Rand Paul is from a political family. I don't hear anyone complaining about that."
That's just fucking stupid, not because the scale and scope of your comparison is retardedly off, but because people are complaining.
"I think the dynastic considerations are idiotic. "
I think the vast majority of what you post is idiotic.
Posts like this are why you get laughed at and called Red Tony.
That's just fucking stupid, not because the scale and scope of your comparison is retardedly off, but because people are complaining.
Not on here they aren't. And they shouldn't be. Why should they? Who cares if Paul's father was a serial killer. What matters his him and what kind of a President you think he is. Jesus Christ if one the Obama kids had an epiphany became the great Libertarian hope for America, are you really so fucking stupid you would vote against them because of "dynastic considerations"? If you are, you are fucking retarded and should consider not voting out of concern for the common good.
Posts like this are why you get laughed at and called Red Tony.
Yes. Posts that make sensible points idiots like you can't handle get me called Red Tony a lot. You are correct in that.
Red Tony can't read.
Fuck off and die now Red Tony.
Red Tony can't read.
Fuck off and die now Red Tony.
Yeah, one off handed comment from a committed Paul supporter is real strong evidence there. And did you miss it when I said
I am forced to conclude he (Jeb Bush) is a complete moron who has no business near any kind of authority.
Yeah, I am real Red Tony alright. Nothing says team red like calling Jeb Bush a complete moron.
Are you really this retarded or are you some Prog or Mary Stack on here trolling?
I appreciate that you admit you were wrong.
NOW, fuck off and die Red Tony.
Fuck off Mary. Go troll another board. This one is too smart for your usual bullshit to work.
John|11.13.14 @ 11:25AM|#
Yes I can. Rand Paul is from a political family. I don't hear anyone complaining about that.
and
A Secret Band of Robbers|11.13.14 @ 11:35AM|#
I personally don't like Rand's family history.
Yeah, I guess I should have seen three minutes into the future and saw that comment.
So Mary in addition to being mentally unbalanced and illiterate, you also can't tell time either.
Go take your meds before I write to Reason and get you banned again.
"Go take your meds before I write to Reason and get you banned again."
FIGHT MY BATTLES FOR ME REASON!!!!
Cry harder Red Tony.
The truth hurts, Red Tony.
The Whole Truth|11.13.14 @ 11:57AM|#
The truth hurts, Red Tony.
That your points are irrational and stupid? No. It is just annoying. But it doesn't hurt.
Cry more Red Tony, then threaten harder, so we believe you're not hurt.
Oh God, it is you Mary. It is funny. You can't fake the kind of lunacy and anger you possess. We get a fair number of trolls on here but I can always tell when it is you. There is something about your language that makes any sane person's hair stand on end. It is hard to put your finger on exactly what makes it so recognizable. But you know it when you see it every time.
Don't you have to threaten people who point out you're a stooge for Jeb Bush?
Or is that what you're doing now Red Tony?
Get help Mary. Really, just get help. And yeah, you know Reason hates you and will ban you as soon as I or someone else points out this thread.
I am just giving you a bit more rope before doing it and watching you unravel out of morbid curiosity.
In this thread, one person points out someone is a stooge, and one person threatens another person because of a political disagreement.
You're completely covered in shit you pathetic hypocritical fuck, and calling you Red Tony obviously pisses you off.
Cry and threaten more.
This whole thread is nothing but you ranting and outing yourself Mary. You are just pissed that you can't seem to troll on here without eventually revealing yourself.
It sucks to be nuts Mary. It just does. No one else can fake your insanity and it is so unique and obvious you can't post on here for very long before someone figures out it is you.
I personally don't like Rand's family history. I'd prefer someone who was a complete outsider. But I also accept that there are a lot of other considerations, and those outweigh the dynastic ones.
I'm not saying they trump all, but at least consider the possibility that the Bush (or Paul) brands are problematic.
Same thing with PR problems. Relatively few are dealbreakers, but you have to take them into account anyway.
Re: A Secret Band of Robbers,
Why would that be?
I think the Bush family, despite election rhetoric by W, are neo-cons. And to me, a neo-con is basically a pro-life prog.
"Since Bush is not likely to be a Prog..."
Why do you come to this conclusion?
I believe the Bush family follows in a long line of Progressive Republicans, starting with Teddy Roosevelt. What about the Bush family doesn't scream 'Big Government Solutions'?
If you consider them "Progressive Republicans" by your definition, your not wrong. You can define the term to mean whatever you like. Whatever Bush is, he is clearly not a "Progressive" in the same way the people who run the education establishment are. And that was the meaning I was applying to the term "Progressive", which is different than how you are defining it.
Fair enough.
Bush is not likely to be a Prog
[citation needed]
"Compassionate conservatism" is progressivism with the pretense of fiscal responsibility.
No. Compassionate conservatism was traditional American liberalism clothed in conservative language. Progessivism, in the form it is practiced by the people who run the education establishment is totalitarian cultural Marxism and completely different and much worse.
You people really do amaze me. I write a rant on why this makes me think Jeb Bush is a moron and every single fucking response to it is some idiotic "but you just want to defend Bush" counter rant. You people really do let the mere mention of the word make you crazy.
Honestly, John, I think you're making too much of the disagreement here.
Traditional American liberalism had enough in common with progressivism that there isn't an entirely distinct demarcation.
No Bill. It is a completely distinct demarcation. Someone like Elizabeth Warren or Chuck Schummer is as far politically from JFK or Hubert Humphrey as they are from Rand Paul.
There is a huge and clear demarcation between the new left and the old left. The Progs of today are the new left. They are totalitarian and completely different than what came before. Indeed, to the extent there is such a thing as a "NEOCON" it is the old left liberals who were run out of the Democratic Party by the totalitarian new left. The entire Bush family are on traditional liberals in the JFK mode.
You claim a number of times that there are differences. What you don't point out is precisely what those differences are.
I mean, are you talking about the JFK who used the Fairness Doctrine to ensure political compliance? Or maybe you want to go back to Truman, who wanted socialized medicine and threatened to nationalize the steel industry? Do we need to go back to Roosevelt and his boys trying to push fascist economics through the NRA?
Sorry, John, but I'm just not buying it. The earlier progressives melded into the Democratic party after the collapse of the Bull-Moose party. They've been a significant part of the liberal wing of American politics ever since. The distinction rests heavily on questions of pragmatism. The JFK/Humphrey era liberals differed from modern proggies in that there was a Cold War and there really wasn't much opposition to the "liberal consensus" of the day.
JFK cut taxes. JFK was a cold warrior who believed in American exceptionalism. JFK had no desire to fundamentally transform American society. The old liberals were about good government and using government to shield the less fortunate from the harsh edges of American society.
The new left rejected American exceptionalism and sought to reduce American influence in the world. The New Left sees government as an agent of societal control and transformation not just as a way to help the less fortunate. The New Left were Marxists and are at heart totalitarian. The Fairness Doctrine is an example of well intentioned bad govenrment. The idea was not to drown out opposing views. That is of course what happened but they didn't intend that.
The new left in contrast intends just that. The new left gave us speech codes and political correctness and "hate speech". It is nothing but the Frankfort School of Marxism brought to America. It is totally different than traditional American liberalism. And it is why so many old style liberals ended up being Republicans.
I am pretty amazing, thank you for noticing.
Fuck Jeb Bush and all the rest of them.
I don't care if he is smarter than his idiot brother. If he is, that means he's probably even more dangerous.
No no, he is, as his "compassionate conservative" brother before him, a progressive of the red stripe variety.
The former Florida governor likes the standards and thinks that if states have a problem with them, they should propose something even better.
Hey, Jeb, I've got an even better idea. How about states simply go with whatever standards they think appropriate and not have people pay to centralize educational standards.
What could possibly be better than Common Core except NO Common Core? Come on, Jeb!
Between Jeb beclowning himself on Common Core, and Walker beclowning himself on drug testing, the leading Repub contenders for the Presidency are looking weaker and clownier all the time.
Pair that with gossip that the Dems are grooming Elizabeth Warren, and any optimism you feel after the spanking the proggies got in the election should be fading pretty quickly.
Meh the Walker thing while stupid I don't see it being an issue to crucify him on. Now Jeb Bush's support for common core is an issue that shows me exactly what he stands for.
I could never vote for someone who didn't think federally mandated standards on anything aren't a race to the lowest common denominator.
It is a dumb idea and it is unconstitutional and would never stand up in the courts and would never get through Congress. It would also be expensive and impossible to administer.
I don't like it that he said something that stupid. But like you I don't consider it a deal killer. It is one of those really stupid ideas that sounds good to a lot of people who are fed up with the welfare system but view killing it as politically impossible.
He should have suggested replacing cash benefits with a monthly food crate. "Don't like government peanut butter? Fuck you, get a job."
That would have been smarter. Ultimately, you can't save people from their own irresponsibility. No matter what you give them, if they are determined enough it will enable them to be irresponsible no matter how many strings you try to put on it.
I know. Look at food stamps. People sell them for half face value and spend the cash on whatever they want anyways.
Also, hate Jeb harder for some reason.
I suspect that the reason they don't do this is mostly because welfare departments are far too incompetent to handle something like getting the correct foods in the correct amounts to the right places on time. That requires professionals, or at least Europeans.
Who says you have to deliver it. Come by the loading dock and pick your free shit up.
Still way easier to fuck up than loading a debit card once a week.
It sounds good and as long as he doesn't follow through with it it will not hurt him at all. The people who will vote for him, or consider voting for him, probably agree with him that people on welfare need some oversight.
(I agree the drug testing is a horrible idea though, to be clear).
I don't agree with drug testing either. I think it bothers people because drugs are a luxury item that people who are actively working can't afford themselves. The obvious solution is to replace state welfare with local charity, but that ain't gonna happen.
Tax money going for someone to get high and fuck all day is very annoying. Standing in the grocery line while someone buys nothing remotely healthy with their EBT card is pretty annoying. Drug testing does not seem like the solution.
However, it would allow me to greatly expand my "clean urine" business.
However, it would allow me to greatly expand my "clean urine" business.
And of course the drug testing industry are the ones who came up with and are pushing this idiotic idea.
Fuckin Big Urine!
It sounds ridiculous when you say it Juggler, but it is true. Big Urine is in the words of our VP, a big fucking deal, the bastards.
Big Piss is better. Damn them...
Again with "The Idea Is Great, It's The Implementation That's Bad" meme.
Sounds too much like "We know you don't like it but
? With a spoonful of sugar,
the medicine will go down!"?
I was thinking "again with the negative waves."
VOODOO EDUCATION.
But he's the smart Bush.
derrrrrrrrrrrrrp
"Compassionate conservatism" is progressivism with the pretense of fiscal responsibility.
No shit. Another limousine liberal who can't wait to tell me what I "owe" my fellow man.
States are free to modify the Common Core State Standards or adopt their own individual standards
They're standards within standards.
That is ridiculous. They are not completely free or the program would be meaningless. What is Bush's proposed fix here? Instead of letting states modify it at will, why not just get rid of it and let them write their own standards?
The larger and more important point is Jeb Bush seems to be a moron.
Chill out. I was making an Inception joke.
I was agreeing with you. I didn't get the Inception reference but I got the sarcasm of how stupid that statement is.
As a Floridian, I thought Jeb was an unremarkable Governor. Compared most politicians, that's actually kind of a compliment, but I don't really remember thinking "what the country needs is more of this guy" after his time in office. Just the opposite really. And that has nothing to do with his being a Bush, which I think would really work against him nationally.
The thing with Jeb Bush is that why can't people embrace the idea of a political ceiling. He seems to have been a decent governor and one that I wish we had more of. I wish people could just leave it at that and not think that means he must consider being President.
Bush senior led to Bill and Hillary Clinton. GWB led to the Obamination.
I shudder to think of what Jeb Bush would lead to with this kind of trend line going.
Jeb Bush is a retard. Common Core is one of the worst things to happen to the Public School system in a long time. Disgusting perverted studies in the name of education. Really!? I think NOT! I am n ot alone in that sentiment.
I have made a conclusion that people just prefer discussing and blaming the Common Core. It is interesting but most of them know at least something about politics but they have no connection with education. If you say that it is bad or good, explain your view. Sometimes I seems that it is mostly blamed by students who don't want to study and apply to essay writers ukbecause the tasks seem too difficult for them, but still they express their indignation online. By the way, I don't like the existing system, I just think it is useless to sit and criticize it.
