MSNBC Has Lousy Ratings—and They're Getting Worse

Rachel Maddow, the biggest star on the MSNBC cable network, just posted her lowest quarterly ratings results ever.

"Morning Joe," MSNBC's signature morning program, scored its second-lowest quarterly ratings, reaching an average of just 87,000 viewers in the key news demographic group.

And "Ronan Farrow Daily," the network's heavily promoted new afternoon show, which stars a 26-year-old Rhodes Scholar with a high-profile Hollywood lineage, has been largely a dud.

Though it has mostly happened quietly, which may be a comment on the cable network's larger status in the media landscape, MSNBC has seen its ratings hit one of the deepest skids in its history, with the recently completed third quarter of 2014 generating some record lows.

  1. I’m so sad.

“In terms of Rachel, everybody knows every night what she’s going to say,” he said. “The network just doesn’t surprise you.”

Everyone know what Limbaugh’s gonna say and yet he still draws. Even Howard Stern.

There has to be something more to it?

    1. They take themselves too seriously, and forget to try to be entertaining.

Of course, when your message is “Everything you do is wrong, and is destroying the planet, you need to put on your hair shirt and atone for your sins”, your real competition is the religious programming on public access.

      Maybe they need more hymns?

      1. Maybe they can borrow the Peter, Paul and Mary tapes that the folks at PBS still seem to think are relevant to…anything.

  2. If only this meant that progressives were dwindling in number instead of simply temporarily disenchanted with the top men they elected.

    1. Their new strategy seems to be to elect Top Women, which will surely be the key to getting the hope and change they have been waiting for.

  3. Watching those shows is rather unbearable.

  4. At least this means my hate-watching of MSNBC hasn’t helped them out any.

I usually can’t make it to the actual programs, just watching the promos full of caring and giving and leaning in and stock footage of left-wing protesters is all I can take.

  5. I must admit to watching MSNBC from time to time to torture myself. As someone who stays current with most news stories (always from multiple sources across the political spectrum) it’s interesting to see the obvious slant and selective reporting that MSNBC engages in–ironic since that’s what they claim Fox News does. Besides, how much airtime does MSNBC devote to playing out-of-context clips from Fox and then condemning them?

    1. What? Documenting the dog whistle racism and shining a light on the patriarchy isn’t news?

      1. “dog whistle racism”

Turns out that racism is like God. It is all around us, but you can only see it if you Believe. And once you accept the true faith, you will be able to see it everywhere.

  6. So I guess Pajama-Boy ain’t helping out that much …
