While at the United Nations, stumping for international action on ISIS, President Barack Obama used the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, as an example of "racial and ethnic tensions" within our own country. It's also an example of what happens when your governmental authority is just too powerful and unaccountable, but funny how that doesn't come up.

  • Meanwhile in Ferguson, there's more unrest and anger over a burned memorial to Brown.
  • Also meanwhile, in Algeria, a militant group linked to ISIS has beheaded a French hostage to punish France for participating in airstrikes in Iraq.
  • A grand jury in Ohio has declined to indict officers who fatally shot a man inside a Walmart store who had been holding an air rifle he apparently picked up from a shelf in the store. The feds plan to investigate. UPDATE: Security footage of the shooting has just been released. It doesn't appear the man was even holding the gun when police shot him.
  • U.S. drones have killed 10 people in northern Pakistan, allegedly militants. Or there were at least militants "among" them.
  • A federal judge sentenced six current and former members of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department to prison for obstructing investigations into abuses at the jail. The judge told the defendants that "blind obedience to a corrupt culture has serious consequences."
  • The "Situation" for Jersey Shore's Mike Sorrentino is that he and his brother have been charged with tax fraud.

    MISDIRECTION.

      Hello.

What a post-racial leader this Obama fella is. I get shivers. Who is he?

    2. a better weapon   11 years ago

Examples of racial tension not only run in one direction, but they're 6 lanes wide it seems.

  2. Fist of Etiquette   11 years ago

The "Situation" for Jersey Shore's Mike Sorrentino is that he and his brother have been charged with tax fraud.

Meanwhile in Ferguson, there's more unrest and anger over burned memorial to Brown.

And, uh, some actual real property might have gotten torched, too.

    1. PapayaSF   11 years ago

"Our dead thug memorial made of flammable materials and lit candles has burned down! Let's do more looting to protest! That will teach people not to be prejudiced against people like us!"

Philly fans boo the Ice Boys who replaced the Ice Girls for Flyers games this season.

I don't like the assumption that Philly fans didn't boo the Ice Girls all the previous years. They probably berate the beer guy too!

I kind of hope this is the Flyers organization engaging in some trolling, and I suspect it is. I can't imagine anyone who has a problem with hockey cheerleader outfits would ever watch a hockey game anyways, so it makes no sense to cave to the Jezebel brigade's demands.

    1. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

Remember when the Flyers wore pants on the ice?

      Cla-sick!

      http://bit.ly/1vhZhIo

      1. a better weapon   11 years ago

The worst? I don't have a problem with any of them and think most of them look great!

The Flyers pants were in the 1982-83 season, huh? Sharp Dressed Man came out in 83. Hopefully, they played it at every home game.

        1. a better weapon   11 years ago

Ugliest* not worst. Totally disagree with SBnation's assessment on the unis.

    2. Tonio   11 years ago

While that was a wussy move on the part of the Flyers, the booing was a dick move on the part of the fans. The Ice Boys didn't have anything to do with the replacement of the Ice Girls and were just doing their jobs. However, I do understand the fans' frustration, however badly expressed.

      1. Invisible Finger   11 years ago

They were booing Flyers management, not the people clearing the ice.

        1. Tonio   11 years ago

Granted, but that might not be clear to the lads at the time.

Also, can we have the lads dress in skimpy outfits?

          1. Coeus   11 years ago

That would have been the perfect solution, and it would have given the feminists fits. Like when Penn Jillette started having male strippers at his yearly bacon party.

But it wouldn't have stopped the bitching, because SJWs have double standards that they use as primary arguments now.

    3. Coeus   11 years ago

We've covered the Ice Girls issue several times in the last year on Puck Daddy, including Melissa Geschwind's terrific piece on their "institutional sexism." The fact that the Flyers eliminated their female eye-candy is laudable. The fact that they did so by getting rid of all the women who worked for them instead of having, you know, an a co-ed team that all wore track suits is insane.

Why won't they keep the women so we could complain about how they don't make as much as the players? I had the piece mostly done already!!! Now I have to find something else to bitch about!!!

  5. Fist of Etiquette   11 years ago

...a militant group linked to ISIS has beheaded a French hostage to punish France for participating in airstrikes in Iraq.

But at least they have something else to talk about besides the French economy.

A grand jury in Ohio has declined to indict officers who fatally shot a man inside a Walmart store who had been holding an air rifle he apparently picked up from a shelf in the store.

HOW IS THERE NOT VIDEO OF THIS? Walmart has cameras everywhere.

    1. JW   11 years ago

Of course there is video. It makes the cops look bad, therefore, it's been "lost."

While not surprised that a grand jury, spoon fed by the DA, refused to indict those goons, they can still get thoroughly fucked.

    Deutsche Post launches drone deliveries:

Medicine deliveries to a pharmacy on a North Sea island will be made by a drone, Deutsche Post announced on Wednesday, in the first project of its kind.

Inhabitants and visitors on the island of Juist, which has a population of fewer than 2,000, will be able to order medicines from the Seehund Pharmacy and have them delivered from the mainland by the drone.

Flying at an altitude of 50 metres, the drone will cover 12 kilometres each way on its daily trips from Norddeich to Juist without any control by a human pilot.

So I was listening to a podcast the other day and there was an interesting factoid that will surprise no one here except Bo.

Apparently people who use seat belts drive less safely.

On net, seat belts PROBABLY still save lives. But there is a feedback effect. Seat belts make you safer so you can drive faster/crazier.

    Its basic risk tolerance.

    1. JW   11 years ago

Parachutes make it more likely that people will jump from airplanes.

      1. robc   11 years ago

        Exactly.

And the number people who have died due to jumping out of a plane on purpose has gone up, I would guess.

        1. Bo Cara Esq.   11 years ago

Do you think pilots with parachutes fly less carefully?

          1. Bobarian (dinosaur hunter)   11 years ago

            Airline pilots - no parachutes

            Air Force Pilots - Parachutes

            So... Yes.

    2. flye   11 years ago

I got a convertible recently and definitely find myself driving more safely when the top is down.

    5. ant1sthenes   11 years ago

Wait, people who are technically breaking the law (driving without seatbelts or insurance) don't want to drive in such a way as to give police a reason to pull them over and catch them?

The only thing this proves is that the more things we criminalize that apply or are found while driving, the safer people will drive. Libertarianism kills.

      1. Bobarian (dinosaur hunter)   11 years ago

In a perfectly libertarian world, we'd all be dead.

    Retard Fight!!! Krugman VS Brooks.

So why go after this display, as opposed to taxing away some of the income? You could say that taxes reduce the incentive to get rich; but so would sumptuary laws, which would undermine the point of getting rich, and so, in fact, would a "code of seemliness", which would again reduce the fun of flaunting it, which is a lot of what people want lots of money for.

Wait, there's more. If you feel that it's bad for society to have people flaunting their relative wealth, you have in effect accepted the view that great wealth imposes negative externalities on the rest of the population ? which is an argument for progressive taxation that goes beyond the maximization of revenue.

Krugman Wins!!! Granted, it's against Brooks, but I never thought I'd see it happen (except in Krugman's own head, of course).

    1. JW   11 years ago

Krugman didn't win. He can't even fucking debate David Brooks without resorting to straw men.

      1. Coeus   11 years ago

I don't think he did that here. How else do you interpret this:

Second, the elite we do have has to acknowledge that privilege imposes duties. Wealthy people have an obligation to try to follow a code of seemliness. No luxury cars for college-age kids. No private jet/ski weekends. Live a lifestyle that is more integrated into middle-class America than the one you can actually afford. Strike a blow for social cohesion.

        1. Brandon   11 years ago

Brooks didn't say anything about making that a law, and Krugman went straight to "THAT'S THE SAME THING AS A 75% TAX RATE, WHICH I SUPPORT TOO!!"

          1. Coeus   11 years ago

            Now who's making a strawman?

            1. Brandon   11 years ago

Still Krugman. What I said is exactly what the excerpted parageph says.

              1. Coeus   11 years ago

Not seeing it. I only saw what he actually wrote, which is that brooks is agreeing with one of the arguments for progressive taxation. Now stop making me defend Krugman. It makes me feel dirty. And not in a good way.

        2. CatoTheElder   11 years ago

I'll consider it when the US president gives up AF1 and flies commercial. He can have 1st class, even though that's beyond the reach of most of the middle class.

If that's too dangerous or uncomfortable for the president, then maybe he needs to stay in his mansion.

        3. Mock-star   11 years ago

And the thought that maybe, just maybe, those with wealth might have acquired it by spending at a level below what they could never enters his mind.

Second, the elite we do have has to acknowledge that privilege imposes duties. Wealthy people have an obligation to try to follow a code of seemliness.

Great. Maybe he could start with the left-wing media/entertainment complex. He can start by encouraging George Clooney to give up his villa in Italy and live in Queens instead. Or the movie stars who buy massive ranches in New Mexico, Utah, and Montana.

    Ban Fraternities.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee police are currently investigating a fraternity after several women were found labeled with red and black X's on their hands after they had to be hospitalized with memory lapses from intoxication at a fraternity party. Last year, three sexual assaults were reported at one Texas fraternity ? within just one month. At Georgia Tech, a frat brother sent around an email guide called "Luring your rapebait". Wesleyan had a frat that was nicknamed the "Rape Factory". In 2010, fraternity brothers at Yale University marched through campus yelling, "No means yes, yes means anal."

In what fever dream do these examples all constitute a rape problem?

This is what we must remember. Women cannot be sexual in certain ways without consequence. Women cannot pose nude or provocatively, whether for a lover or themselves, without consequence. We are never allowed to forget how the rules are different girls. I suppose we should be grateful for this latest reminder.

    3. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

This practice is so pervasive that it even has its own name ? revenge porn, nude photos and explicit videos unleashed on the internet, most often by disgruntled ex-lovers. There are websites and online forums dedicated to this pernicious genre. Lives have been, if not ruined, irreparably harmed, because we are a culture that thrives on the hatred of women, of anyone who is Other in some way, of anyone who dares to threaten the status quo.

Or maybe, just maybe, men are less likely to take full nudes and send them to their lover. Dick pics? Sure. Full frontal? Rare as compared to women and made-up genders. If your dick pic is getting play, the only way you know is I'd you see it and remember it. If a full frontal gets play, everybody recognizes you.

Also, men are the primary consumers/targets of porn. A revenge pic or video of a girl is naturally going to get more play than a guy, even all else equal.

      1. Pro Libertate   11 years ago

Who the fuck wants to see a naked guy? Do gay guys even do that?

        1. Tonio   11 years ago

          Srsly? Hell, yes, we do.

And again, srsly, being a gay man means that you are a man who really, really likes other men. Everything about other men. And gay men, being men, are still pigs.

          1. Pro Libertate   11 years ago

            I was kidding, silly.

      2. B.P.   11 years ago

This article is a nonsensical pile of internal inconsistencies and in-group-signaling buzz phrases. What does the word "Other" mean in this context? 51+ percent of the population? These people have really ruined a perfectly good language.

  21. Juice   11 years ago

Just watched that Wal Mart video. That's straight murder, dude. No indictment? I guess cops aren't as dangerous as a ham sandwich.

    1. BiMonSciFiCon   11 years ago

Yep. The grand jury must not have seen the video. If they didn't, the prosecutor should be disbarred.

      1. Pro Libertate   11 years ago

Prosecutors, cops. There's some relationship between the two of some sort. I think.

        1. BiMonSciFiCon   11 years ago

I think you are right. And you'd think an impartial system would have safeguards for this sort of thing.

Prosecutors should have "fiduciary duties" to citizens and to faithfully uphold the law. Instead they have immunity from everything, and use such immunity to get convictions and protect their buddies. It's disgusting.

          1. Mock-star   11 years ago

I cant be the only one who is still getting serious mileage out of the "government is just the name we give to things we do together" quote.

  22. Paul.   11 years ago

A grand jury in Ohio has declined to indict officers who fatally shot a man inside a Walmart store who had been holding an air rifle he apparently picked up from a shelf in the store.

I just watched the video. Those cops just wanted to shoot someone. Job well done.

  23. JW   11 years ago

As long as police felt reasonably threatened, the law calls Crawford's killing "justified"

I have this theory that if police departments stopped hiring massively cowardly pussies, there might be fewer shootings.

    1. Pro Libertate   11 years ago

You know, in law school they had reasonableness standards and stuff. That seems to have gone away.

The one comment in the first link is absolutely true about journalism as well:

Rob Ennals: It seems that whenever I read a media article about something I actually know about, there is something fundamentally wrong with their understanding of the situation. This makes me worry about the accuracy of the information I'm getting about things I'm not knowledgable about.

        1. CatoTheElder   11 years ago

Hey, the paper only costs $1.25 and it's free on the Internet. If you want an accurate report on something, that costs a whole lot more.

    2. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

but by the time I left school, all of the software and programming languages I'd learned had been obsolete for years.

That statement alone should be grounds for them to revoke his degree.

NO SHIT! They teach you obsolete languages so that you don't pigeonhole yourself, and so that you actually have to interact with the hardware components that are abstracted away in newer languages! If you understand pointers in C, it makes references in C++ understandable, and gives you insight into the Python memory management method. This guy must have been too busy at the rape factories to actually pay attention in class.

      1. CatoTheElder   11 years ago

I still use the same concepts that I learned in Fortran and assembly language classes back in the early 70s.

Sure, the languages are obsolete, but logic hasn't gone out of style.

Prick actually turned down 2 entry-level jobs.

What the fuck do college grads with no work experience think the job market is going to offer them???

The asshole actually called an entry-level IT job "the technological equivalent of flipping hamburgers".

At least he thought starting his own business was an option. I'm sure he'll whine about how his business loans are killing him and should be forgiven if his consulting business with no track record doesn't take off.

      1. flye   11 years ago

Somehow he thought an MIS degree would get him a management job straight out of college? Too precious to work his way up? Prick is exactly right.

        1. Invisible Finger   11 years ago

Note that the original link is actually to a several-times-edited article. The original Post article is here:

          http://www.pennlive.com/opinio.....eneur.html

Note that he claims his business is thriving. Which pretty much means he's actually complaining about nothing. His degree got him job offers, but he wanted more money so he put in the effort to learn EVEN MORE and got better jobs. Falls into the "No shit, Sherlock" category.

As much as I want to call the guy a prick, the Washington Post editor REALLY is a bigger asshole. But somehow I think this piece is advertisement-disguised-as-editorial.

          1. DEG   11 years ago

I hadn't yet read the original Penn Live article. I should have before I posted the WaPo link.

The PennLive article is a little better, but he's still an idiot. I wouldn't be surprised if his business fails.

        2. DEG   11 years ago

I love this quote from him:

To find real work, I had to teach myself new technologies and skills outside of class, and it wasn't easy.

Shit-for-brains, that's life in the technology biz. You either constantly learn new things, or you're done.

          1. DEG   11 years ago

That quote is from the WaPo article.

          2. Invisible Finger   11 years ago

Something tells me that was probably mentioned during his classes but he'd rather be a manager than a doer.

      2. Invisible Finger   11 years ago

If those entry-level jobs paid $10.50 an hour, yeah they're essentially flipping hamburgers.

I'd bet they all started at $30/hour minimum. Even in Harrisburg.

        1. flye   11 years ago

          They're programming burger-flipping robots.

Interesting reading about the Communist takeover of Poland.

There was a referendum where the Communists rigged the results to among other things approve of this statement:
Do you want consolidation, in the future constitution of the economic system founded on agricultural reform and the nationalisation of basic national industries, including the preservation of the statutory rights of private enterprise?

    Marketing company framed 4chan

There's anger on Facebook after a website that had threatened to reveal naked photos of Emma Watson was uncovered as a viral marketing hoax.
The EmmaYouAreNext.com now redirects to the front page of a social media company in the US called Rantic.
A message on the firm's front page calls for anonymous online message board 4chan to be shut down.
The website was blamed for hosting the threat to Emma Watson with a countdown towards the release of nude pictures.
However, when the timer ended it started to link through to the marketing company's website.

This. I imagine the posters of 4chan are foing to rip them a new one in 3....2.....1

This. I imagine the posters of 4chan are foing to rip them a new one in 3....2.....1

Maybe--based on stuff I've read, a lot of the free-wheelers have been getting their IPs banned left and right. Apparently Moot (the guy who runs 4chan), after the incident where the channers nearly drove Nick Denton's niece to suicide (yes, the same Nick Denton who runs Gawker Media), caved to pressure and replaced a lot of the old mods with a bunch of SJW mods--who are now doing stuff like banning people who mention #gamergate.

I don't have a link handy, but I'm sure it's not hard to Google up.

          1. ant1sthenes   11 years ago

So, we should assume that a new successor will take up the mantle once the commies trash the place? Freedom to exit is a lot smoother with internet countries, and starting a new one is easier too.

Cooperalls. Ha I forgot the name.

I'm in the minority on this, but I thought they were great. Faster to put on, faster to take off and gave me a good degree of freedom. Still use the outsides of my cooperalls for ski pants.

What the fuck is wrong with the people on that grand jury?

They, like the NFL, didn't see the video.
