Did last night's primetime presidential speech announcing expanding authorization for airstrikes in Iraq and Syria feel kind of familiar? Like you've heard it before?

That's probably because you have. You've been hearing for more than two decades, from presidents on both sides of political aisle. At this point, bombing Iraq is practically a American presidential tradition.

And, via the magic of YouTube and The Huffington Post's Sam Stein, you can watch every president back to the first George Bush announce a new plan to launch military strikes in Iraq.

Here's George H.W. Bush in January 1991 announcing that "air attacks are already underway against military targets in Iraq."

Here's President Bill Clinton in December 1998 announcing a mission, along with British forces, to "strike military and security targets in Iraq."

Here's President George Bush (the second one) in March 2003 announcing that American forces, with help from coalition partners, "are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq."

And here's President Obama, last night, describing U.S. airstrikes and other military operations designed to "degrade and ultimately destroy" ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Ah, memories.

(Credit for these finds goes to to Sam Stein of The Huffington Post, who last night rounded up these clips on his Twitter feed.)

Bombing Iraq is as American as Mom and apple pie.

    1. anon   11 years ago

And somehow everyone wonders why people in the Middle East hate us.

      1. WTF   11 years ago

        We're bringing them ORDER!

        1. sarcasmic   11 years ago

          We're bringing them democracy!

Well, unless they choose the wrong leaders.

Then we'll have to keep conquering them until they choose right ones!

      2. Francisco d'Anconia   11 years ago

They hate us for our freedoms.

      3. PatriotInTheOriginalSense   11 years ago

And it brought stability to the region. Which means that no one chops off their arms because their grandmother's grandfather belonged to a different tribe.

They LIKE us down there, boy.

  2. Rich   11 years ago

And via the magic of computer graphics, you can even watch the *next* president announce a new plan to launch military strikes in Iraq!

    1. Brandon   11 years ago

      Digital Hillary?

      1. A Secret Band of Robbers   11 years ago

The radicalized factions that will be threatening America in 2017 will be so dangerous we'll have no choice but to bomb people indiscriminately and occupy whichever country until they love us.

  3. Idle Hands   11 years ago

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. We will not get fooled again.

    1. Kaptious Kristen   11 years ago

We will not most definitely get fooled again.*

Where is PB babbling about how Obama never lead us into an illegitimate war?

      1. Francisco d'Anconia   11 years ago

        LIKE BOOOOOOOOOSH DID!

      2. OneOut   11 years ago

Silly Boy. It's not illegitimate when Barako Bama does it.

Didn't you hear him say he had the authority to do this ?

        Case closed.

      3. A Secret Band of Robbers   11 years ago

I guess he's not going to show up, so let me try to fill in.

[Non sequitur about bad things that Bush did.]

[Accusation that you're a crypto-Republican who is defending Bush for criticizing Obama for doing the same things.]

        [Orgasm, silent weeping.]

        Fin.

        Thank you.

Standing ovation! Sometimes I wonder if I spend too much time reading the Reason comments, then I get to a post like this and realize it's all worth it.

  4. tarran   11 years ago

Man, they sure got a great actor to play Clinton; we might actually be fooled into thinking that Democratic presidents start wars too!

    1. anon   11 years ago

Fuck, by then it'll be televised so we can watch shit explode.

      1. bassjoe   11 years ago

By then, each American will get his/her own drone to bomb Iraq via voice commands to his iWatch.

        1. Scruffy Nerfherder   11 years ago

Not now honey, I see some guys in Toyota pickups who look suspicious.

          1. Brett L   11 years ago

Try not to mess up the HiLux too bad. See if you can just hit them with the concussion.

            1. Scruffy Nerfherder   11 years ago

I think a HiLux could take a direct hit from a cruise missile.

      2. nonluddite   11 years ago

Rand is too old for Pearl Jam. How about Rush CDs instead?

    3. Invisible Finger   11 years ago

Some of us have. First five years of my existence.

    4. Idle Hands   11 years ago

Of course because it will have become so played out it will have become ironic by then.

Iraq's bureaucrats like it though. Like US bureaucrats, they need to be bombed otherwise they feel they have no purpose in life.

  11. Episiarch   11 years ago

It's kind of freaky when I realize we've been bombing Iraq since about one year after the Berlin Wall fell.

    1. Idle Hands   11 years ago

I wasn't even alive when that happened, old timer.

      1. Scruffy Nerfherder   11 years ago

Jesus, do you even have pubes yet?

        1. Idle Hands   11 years ago

No, it's quite embarrassing. I have to shave my chest hair and stick it down there so women don't think I'm a creep.

          1. Scruffy Nerfherder   11 years ago

            They actually think that?

              1. SugarFree   11 years ago

It would taste like glue and pubes, junior. C'mon, work with here, people.

To be fair I am older than the oldest teenager, so I literally couldn't do that.

    1. Swiss Servator, Go Genf!   11 years ago

Well, I went to where they had dug up Ur....been a while since civilization left the cradle.

  16. Invisible Finger   11 years ago

According to the newspaper, "an act that drew violent threats online."

I wonder if the police are investigating these threats? If not why not? Don't they WANT their monopoly power?

    1. Invisible Finger   11 years ago

Sorry, had a tab open to a different post.

      1. Swiss Servator, Go Genf!   11 years ago

I dunno, maybe we should just have had the cops SWAT ISIS. Then your comment makes perfect sense.

  17. SugarFree   11 years ago

If you are 23 or younger, you've never known a world where we weren't bombing Iraq.

    1. sarcasmic   11 years ago

      That's sad.

      1. Idle Hands   11 years ago

I thought you were all about the 23 and younger crowd?

    2. Francisco d'Anconia   11 years ago

Well to be fair, there was 2011-2014.

      1. SugarFree   11 years ago

I'm pretty sure we were still hitting targets with drones in support of the Iraqi military during that period.

        1. Swiss Servator, Go Genf!   11 years ago

Not so much - too busy in Pak, Yemen and the Horn of Africa...

          1. SugarFree   11 years ago

I figured we kept our hand in. What a model of restraint Obama represents.

            1. Swiss Servator, Go Genf!   11 years ago

Not many people know how deep in we are in the Horn of Africa... it consumes a lot of the dronez and other special resources, if you get my drift.

    3. Idle Hands   11 years ago

      What if you feel 22?

            1. Restoras   11 years ago

And finally die forever. God it's just awful.

  18. The Late P Brooks   11 years ago

They hate us for our freedoms.

We're destroying freedom in order to save it.

    1. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

It's 'Sex to save the friendship' doctrine.

  19. creech   11 years ago

I finally woke to a sensible editorial in the local newsrag.
"Once Bid Laden was gone, we all thought that the terrorist networks around the world would be shattered, busted or broken. Boy, were we wrong. What we thought we had in al-Qaeda is nothing compared to ISIS...terrorism on planet Earth is alive and well...dealing with terrorism anywhere around the globe is an impossible task. We're not encouraging panic but the reality of it all is that we will never end terrorism or terrorist attacks. It is not logical to think we can stop it and the people who are convinced that this fight of theirs requires murdering innocent people."

    1. Anon E. Mouse   11 years ago

Only fools thought that the death of UBL would shatter, bust or break any terrorist network. For the last few years of his life, UBL was an isolated, ineffective hermit.

Dealing with terrorism is NOT an "impossible task. While you cannot stop terrorism completely, you can damn sure discourage it by raining fire on those who commit it, and those who support those who commit it. The one thing you cannot do is ignore it. It's purpose is to terrorize, and those that rely on it as a tactic will escalate the violence of attacks until their goal to terrorize is met.

  20. The Late P Brooks   11 years ago

Jesus, do you even have pubes yet?

    Wrong thread, dude.

    Because Peace Prize or something!

  22. Warty   11 years ago

I remember some kid in my English class being outraged when I said that Clinton was bombing Iraq to draw attention from the Monica Lewinsky thing. Or was that Sudan? Probably both.

    1. SugarFree   11 years ago

Sudan. To be fair, that pharma factory had it coming, going out so late dressed like that.

      1. Sudden   11 years ago

It was Sudan and Afghanistan both actually.

See, Afghanistan may not have had quite as much REIGN OF DEATH! from the U.S., but they did get the Soviet invasion too.

        1. Bobarian (dinosaur hunter)   11 years ago

          NO- It was clearly Kosovo.

Depending on your definition of is.

    2. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

I just don't remember, though, the country being this divided along team colors line. Both Bush and Clinton faced criticism and praise from all sides.

The last two - especially under President Wing-It - it's been a different story.

      1. Idle Hands   11 years ago

To be fair the last two have been bad, real bad.

        1. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

Clinton was magnificently mediocre. People forget this point. Even liberal pundits conceded this in the past.

          1. Idle Hands   11 years ago

Well like I said the last two have been really bad, I would take mediocre.

      2. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

Not that it didn't happen under Clinton. He did claim there was a 'vast right-wing' conspiracy after all.

And I further understand American politics in the 19th century was especially wicked but I'm focusing on the last four in accordance with the article.

        1. Swiss Servator, Go Genf!   11 years ago

Hillary was the one who broke out the "vast right wing conspiracy". Bill was too busy with his cigar collection to care.

          1. Bobarian (dinosaur hunter)   11 years ago

Bill was too busy with his cigar collection people finding out about his humidor to care.

            1. Restoras   11 years ago

I see that there, you are implying that humidor is actually Monica Lewinsky's Canal of Personhood.

                +1

  24. setTHEline   11 years ago

Uh, just a few things there sir Obama.

"The strategy we've successfully pursued in Yemen and Somalia"
    Big success stories, well chosen.

    "Arm Syrian opposition"
Which one are they now? I thought ISIS (and their friends) was the opposition force in Syria. We were sort of helping them out with some stuff (guns and shit) if I remember correctly before this all started. Are we now calling Assad's regime the opposition? Or perhaps there's a third party of good guys who love freedom, America, and Iron Man 1/2/3?

Anyways, feels good to be getting back to America's roots = dropping freedom from airplanes disguised as bombs.

  25. Jackand Ace   11 years ago

  27. Zoobs   11 years ago

Here's how to end the war on terror w/o sacrifycing American lives:
Declare a "manhattan project" to make the US energy independent in five years by opening up the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, ANWAR, the Gulf, and anywhere fracking can be accomplished. Mandate all public transportation and commercial vehicles use natural gas and convert as much of the economy over to it. Then dump all our oil and coal on the global market and crash OPEC. Plenty of jobs at home, economic growth, new tax revenue. If the Middle East doesn't get on board to take care of this mess, they get $20/barrel oil and its back to tents.

    1. Warty   11 years ago

AND WHY DON'T THEY MAKE AIRLINERS OUT OF THE SAME THING THEY MAKE THOSE INDESTRUCTIBLE BLACK BOXES OUT OF???

  28. kinnath   11 years ago

It'really important to deplete our stocks of aging munitions so that military contractors (aka campaign donors) can sell us bigger, longer, and uncut munitions.

  29. C. S. P. Schofield   11 years ago

Does this suggest to anyone else that the thing to do is turn the whole area into a gigantic sheet of faintly glowing glass?

    1. kinnath   11 years ago

No. We should just walk away.

If we're worried about the loss of the oil fields, we could just invade Venezuela and take all their oil. It's a lot closer to home, and the logistics of fighting South America would be a lot simpler.

  30. PatriotInTheOriginalSense   11 years ago

    Never forget, indeed.

  31. american socialist   11 years ago

How many ground troops are dedicated to this dastardly mission of getting rid of al queda's fundamentalist stepson from Iraq? I just want to know if libertarians can tell the difference between saddam Hussein and Isis and perhaps more crucially the difference between the numbers 500 and 175,000.

    1. Chumby   11 years ago

Libertarians were against Gulf War 2 (and the 175,000). I like how you are using the moral relativism to try and camouflage an imperialistic move by Obama.

Regarding Hussein (Saddam not Barack) versus ISIS, it is hard to tell since both received military aid from the federal government to fight a third party (Iran in the case of the former and Syria in the case of the latter).

And to revisit "just a few advisors", we used very few ground troops in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union. You know, where we trained moderate freedom fighters. Who later trained extremists that flew planes into our buildings thirteen years ago. And we only started with a few advisors in Southeast Asia.

One ground troop is too many. One drone strike is too many. One bombing mission is too many.

In shepherd family, what do we have? A shepherd, A Dog, and the Herd ( in our case Sheep). What is the relationship among all? The Sheppard is the boss, the Dog is the Controller, and the Sheep is us, the human. Lets put this in perspective: The boss is the super duper rich guy on the top that has no boundaries or countries, the dogs are the countries with the selected people called governments that work for the boss(s), and the human, you all know, are all of us, almost 7 billion of us who work hard, put our ass together to make the dogs happy otherwise we, the real people, either end up in jail or depleted of our wealth. The difference between Western societies and Eastern societies is that in Western society they F you with Vaseline and rubbing oil that you don't feel immediate impact on your anus, but in Eastern societies they F you so fast and furious that the impact on your anus is devastating. Both have same results at the end; one with easy depletion of your wealth and respect, and the other hard depletion of your respect that ultimately results in depletion of your wealth since you get mentally disturbed.

I suggest that the no fly zone enforced by US and UK air forces before Iraq2 2 were about as effective as possible and as cheap in US/UK and Iraqi lives as could be achieved. It protected communities in the north and south from air attack and it took out potential defensive sites.

A similar strategy now could enable any forces in Iraq who want a civic rather than theocratic society to defend themselves. Permanent chaos does not seem a sensible strategy, but perhaps our elites have decided they need a permanent enemy with which to frighten the people so they can remain in office.

there is no sign these elites are currently in power but instead they are repeatedly pushed around by as few as 25-35,000 rebels.
