On the plus side, at least everyone forgot the VA even exists.

        Watch that accent, now.

        1. waffles   11 years ago

I will say the most annoying accent I have ever been subjected too was a bus ride to the airport in Barbados with a Canadian family making Canadian baby talk to their Canadian infant. That was 12 years ago and the memory still enrages me.

"Fist of Etiquette draws a lot of water on this blog. You don't draw shit, Firefly. Now we got a nice, quiet little libertarian blog here, and I aim to keep it nice and quiet. I don't like your jerk-off behavior, and I don't like you, jerk-off. Do I make myself clear?"

A Taliban commander says that "everybody" in the Islamist group will now "work hard to capture" more Amricans like Bowe Bergdahl.

Must be one of them unintended consequences nobody is responsible for.

No surprise, naturally, to anyone familiar with the Iron Laws:

You get more of what you reward, and less of what you punish.

No. Why? Because FYTW. It's only illegal when mere peasants do it.

Speaking of the WC, been meaning to ask the soccer dudes around here about their thoughts on Donovan being left off the team.

I've gone back and forth on this but in the end, judging by the depth of the team, it's hard to justify keeping him off, no?

      1. Ted S.   11 years ago

Speaking of the WC, been meaning to ask the soccer dudes around here about their thoughts on Donovan being left off the team.

At least it means we don't have to see this again.

I have to send that to my soccer gang.

I have no problem with it, then again I'm biased towards Brad Davis being a Dynamo fan and all.

      3. Brett L   11 years ago

Eh. Donovan pretty much said he wasn't gonna eat, breathe, and live soccer, and Klinsmann took him at his word. Still, I wish we'd kept him because he's worth at least one equalizer, which we'll need, because the US only plays from behind. Like jesse.

Hillary Clinton's camp allegedly held a secret meeting with The New York Times and demanded that the paper be less critical of her.

That was actually an example they gave the NYT as something they could print.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   11 years ago

Justin Bourque: What we know about Moncton shooting suspect

Based on posts on the Facebook page, Bourque not only promoted the use of guns, but held libertarian views and showed hostility toward police and authority in general.

He also shared images with slogans such as "Free Men Do Not Ask Permission to Bear Arms" and "Militia Is Only a Bad Word if You're a Tyrant."

To be fair, it's usually only the people who have ever interacted with them.

      4. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

They actually were talking on the radio about if we need to do more with gun legislation. It's beyond absurd in a city (Montreal) where there are under 90 murders a year and no gun culture yet they still want more gun control.

  17. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

OT: I'm having trouble with the signal to noise ratio on some blogs that I follow/have followed. Some of them contain some legit good articles, but one of two things happens, either they start having a proggie love fest (unfollowed one blog today for their circle-jerk about plastic bag bans), or they fall into the programmatic "7 ways to ... that you've never heard before!!!1!" I'd hate to ruthlessly take the unfollow hammer to these blogs because some of the articles are legitimately good, but I have unfollowed 3 or 4 in the last couple months because of their low signal to noise ratio.

Most the offending blogs are in the personal finance, cooking, or gardening world.

    Any suggestions?

    1. waffles   11 years ago

You can never be off topic in the PM links. As for avoiding filler? You can't. 99% of content is crap or repeated. It's just the world we live in.

      1. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

Yeah, that's what i'm afraid of... although, to be honest, the filler isn't what annoys me as much. The unfollow hammer comes out when targeted blogs decide that they are going to wade into other genres. Gardening blogs that are obsessed with GMOs, frugal blogs cheering plastic bag bans, local weather facebook groups sending weather alerts for 3 states away.

At least if you're being programmatic with filler info, you're still on topic.

    2. Wasteland Wanderer   11 years ago

Either stop reading them or just skip the offending articles.

Or you could troll the hell out of them, but that may get you banned, depending on how much groupthink there is.

      1. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

I thought about trolling the hell out of LifeHacker when they started going downhill, but it seemed like too much effort.

In general, having uninteresting/off-topic articles on occasion is entirely unremarkable, and skipping them is implied. However, I've just found a deluge of off-topic articles as of late and wanted to see if anybody else has perceived that trend in their reading as well.

        1. jesse.in.mb   11 years ago

I still read LifeHacker, but I skip most articles now. Actually most of the articles I like on LifeHacker are cross-posted on Gizmodo anyway.

I might have to see if there's ANYTHING I read from LifeHacker next time my RSS gets backed up.

          1. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

Every once in a while I come across a decent LH article, but about 2-3 years ago they started a steady and rapid decline. I used to read and comment on that site daily, but they lost the golden touch.

      1. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

Nope, Ross-Ade Stadium. Why they're building a new premium deck for a football team that barely eked out 1 win against a mediocre FCS team last year, I'll never know.

        1. B.P.   11 years ago

Ha, that's funny. My alum e-mail is also proposing endzone premium seats to watch crap football.

          1. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

The best part was the prices that they were proposing for the season. First, I live 900 miles from campus. Second, I wouldn't pay $800 per person for open air roller seats and a barbeque grill, even if they were winning 8 games a season! I thought that $5000 a season was a bit ridiculous for traditional suites stuck in the end zone, but I don't regularly price out suites.

I've got the same problem. One I follow is a tech blog but recently they've been fellating China as the next big thing, ready to demolish the US with their burgeoning economy.

Mainly using GDP as a justification. As if a country that spends a fuckton of money on infrastructure that no-one is ready to use is an accurate gage of wealth.

      1. R C Dean   11 years ago

they've been fellating China as the next big thing,

China just keeps bringing the stupid.

China has a glut of factories in industries ranging from steel to construction equipment to solar panels. Beijing encouraged heavy investment in those industries to move away from its dependence on low-level manufacturing. While central government officials signal that they want to tamp down on capacity, local governments are still backing local champions that are major employers.

Oh no! And the Taliban was being so nice to Americans up until now!

    1. tarran   11 years ago

Stormy, sweetie, let me mansplain this to you.

The Taliban are a proxy force being used by the Pakistani Intelligence Services to dominate Afghanistan in their proxy war with Iran.

They had no designs outside this sphere.

In fact, they are even willing to allow U.S. supply convoys through their territory, for a sufficiently high bribe.

Their focus hasn't been on getting prisoners; you'll note that no U.S. soldier has ever been taken prisoner before. They just wanted to inflict casualties, and they haven't done too shabby a job of it.

Obama has fucked up so royally, that we'd have to come up with a new rank of royalty, like God Emperor of Earth to describe what a colossal mistake this is.

Back in 2002, a significant portion of the prisoners in Gitmo were people kidnapped in Afghanistan and sold to the Americans. That's about to start again. Except it isn't going to be so pretty.

Since the Reagan Era, the U.S. has managed to maintain the appearance that kidnapping its personnel was a dangerous waste of time. The consistency of that doctrine made kidnapping U.S. personnel a risky proposition. Now, it's going to have to be reapplied again, and some poor group of people are going to be the sacrificial victims that drive the lesson home.

All because Obama is such a narcissistic loser that he can't think more long-term than tomorrow's paper.

So your argument is that the Taliban is now going to try to capture alive soldiers that they were previously just killing outright, and that I am somehow supposed to be upset by this prospect?

        1. tarran   11 years ago

Actually, the ransom makes each kidnapped man they trade back far more valuable than those people would be if killed outright.

The attempts to kidnap people will be far more vigorous. And when they don't get their way, the torments their victims suffer will be far worse than a quick death.`

And they won't just be going after troops. They'll be going after civilians, reporters, aid workers, doctors, anyone that they think they can trade for.

You may think it's worth a snarky joke, but this is serious business.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: Abe Lincoln 'would turn in his grave' over Republicans' climate denial

"Abe Lincoln would turn in his grave if he knew that his descendants, his political descendants ? if I remember correctly, Abe Lincoln was Republican ? were cherry-picking scientific results," Tyson said in a clip from his recent interview with MSNBC host Chris Hayes. "I don't know what he would say. I'm pretty sure he'd be disappointed."

Lincoln founded the academy in 1863, deGrasse Tyson explained, under the belief that both presidents and legislators would better serve the country by being able to call upon the NAS for advice on matters related to the sciences. But today's Republicans, the noted astrophysicist said, are content to pick-and-choose data at their own convenience.

"What you should be doing is recognizing the scientific results, then let the political conversations be about what kind of legislation you need to put into place that might serve your political interests," deGrasse Tyson said.

    1. tarran   11 years ago

Of course, by scientific results, Neil Degrasse Tyson means the predictions of computer models that directly contradict a decade and a half's worth of observations.

Remember, boys and girls, nothing says "Science!" like an unfalsifiable theory!

      😀

    2. Jordan   11 years ago

I'm trying to figure out where in the Church of Carbontology's hierarchy Neil Douchebag Tyson fits. I'm thinking he's probably a bishop.

      1. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

He's the Joel Osteen of Carbontology.

      2. Pro Libertate   11 years ago

He's also not a climatologist. If he were opining like this on, say, string theory, which he's likely also not competent to talk about with authority, he'd probably get slagged by some physicists. Strangely, climatology accepts all comers who profess non-heretical views.

        1. Juice   11 years ago

Because climatology is more politics than science.

          1. Pro Libertate   11 years ago

Apparently so. Once we get more and better data and have much more powerful computer modeling, maybe we can start making some predictions, but with the chaotic systems in play and the huge amount of data to track, it's still very much guess work.

Which is why absolute statements about it show profound ignorance and/or blinding political biases. Saying there's a warming trend that may be attributable in part to some human factors is a reasonable theory that may have some evidentiary support. Almost everything else is so much hot gas.

            1. Brett L   11 years ago

And remember from this morning. Geoengineering is doomed. Only TOP. MEN. can save us from ourselves.

Once we get more and better data and have much more powerful computer modeling, maybe we can start making some predictions, but with the chaotic systems in play and the huge amount of data to track, it's still very much guess work.

I don't think it's a question of bigger, more powerful models.

It's a question of parametrization. I don't think one can represent the Earth's atmospheric system accurately enough to predict the states it will evolve through for any distance into the future.

              1. Pro Libertate   11 years ago

It's really a young science, and we're quite early in the process of doing massive modeling of chaotic systems. Maybe at some point we'll be able to get somewhere, but I'm highly dubious of the kind of absolute statements some make.

But if scientists are going way outside their area of expertise and start advocating for certain economic policies, people point to it and say dumb shit like, "the science says we need a carbon tax, cap and trade, and way more windmills" when the science actually said no such fucking thing.

      1. Juice   11 years ago

        That's in reply to:

What you should be doing is recognizing the scientific results, then let the political conversations be about what kind of legislation you need

      2. Brett L   11 years ago

Let me just say, the black-letter statements of the AIChE ethics agreement are such that using my status as a chemical engineer in a setting that isn't the internet to claim authority in an area in which I am not an expert is a violation under two clauses. More importantly, I don't give a fuck if he literally created the science of climatology. The evidence his position have yet collected fails to satisfy with the rigor my scientific heroes would demand.

        1. Pro Libertate   11 years ago

Yes, shouldn't he be saying something like, "There's reason to be concerned, with some models indicating the possibility of dramatic increases in temperature. But we still lack a solid understanding of climate and other chaotic systems."

        2. Juice   11 years ago

Well, to play devil's advocate, engineering is more of a profession with certain professional responsibilities to ensure safety and efficacy.

    4. Mad Scientist   11 years ago

Several of the businesses that these guys have held their protests at have tightened their restrictions on customers carrying firearms after the businesses were targeted by anti-gun folks, and they're scaring away political support for the Texas open-carry bill.

            1. Coeus   11 years ago

What support? that whole article is based on this quote:

Well one notable difference is that guns actually cause harm, and gay people generally do not. But if for some reason the lady had cause to believe that they were potentially going to do something illegal, by all means call the cops. It would be a moronic call to make, but she absolutely could.

Also, you seem to be willfully ignoring the part where actual police have asked concerned citizens to call on these people, stating "Let us determine what is lawful."

    9. Tonio   11 years ago

Open Carry Texas was successful in obtaining that woman's information, because Texas has something called the "Open Records Act," which allows just about anyone to obtain various types of government information. One of the things they're able to obtain is 911 records for calls like mine, which the group claims I made illegally. Even in Texas, local police have stated that people should report people or groups carrying guns saying "Let us determine what is lawful or unlawful." However, that wouldn't make my call any less easy to access.

Hey, Skepchick, you were one of the people cheerleading the publicizing of gun owners based on public records, right? Why is this any different on FOI or First Amendment grounds? (Hint: It's not). Hah!

Disclaimer: OpenCarryTexas is doing more harm than good in tactical terms, but are still within their rights.

Krugman fires up the strawman machine

The answer is, everywhere. Electricity consumption isn't in a fixed relationship with GDP: there are many choices to be made on things like insulation and building design. Even more important, there are many ways to generate electricity: coal, gas, nuclear, hydro, wind, solar ? and the alternatives to coal are more competitive than ever before. That doesn't mean that reducing emissions has no cost ? but again, the idea that, say, a 30 percent fall in emissions requires a 30 percent fall in GDP is ludicrous.

Except I've never heard anyone say that, and the article he claims to debunk certainly doesn't.

It's not going to work this time. She's a known quantity--too fucking well known--unlike Obama, and she's just not good at politics or anything else. Her husband was good at politics, but he clearly is either past caring or no longer good at it.

    Another random personal question:

I received and accepted a formal offer for a job from a (fairly prominent) company a couple months back. I simply had to pass background and the like in order to get final instructions and start. In 1.5 months, there's been no progress from their side on getting me started. I've gotten a few excuses (someone quit in HR, paperwork got misplaced) and a few target dates (it was always two or three days away), but still haven't seen any progress since April. It's to the point where I had to go around the HR contact to the people I interviewed with to get a status update, because HR stopped responding to my emails (which I would send every 2 weeks, it's not like I was harassing them).

Is there anything to do but sit on my hands and keep bugging them for updates? The company is great, the job opportunity is great, but 2 months to get me a start date is getting just a little ridiculous.

    1. tarran   11 years ago

      Get another job.

Seriously. Keep pinging your hiring manager every other day.

But if someone else offers you a job, accept it and then tell the guys who fucked up, "thanks but no thanks".

    2. GILMORE   11 years ago

Show up at the door. Call ahead and let someone know you're coming, but show up and talk to someone.

I am serious, and i could explain to you further why, but i dont want to waste space/time.

The short of it is, technically they've hired you (if you have a signed contract); if things changed and they don't want to go through with it, they're #*$& in a lot of trouble, and the typical tactic bigger companies pull is to hope you will go away.

If you show up, it will force them to admit the issue and give you something. That something may be the actual job if you are physically there. because it is very hard for people to tell people stuff to their face.

This is an old sales thing. You want to close the deal, you have to see them in person.

      1. All-Seeing Monocle   11 years ago

but show up and talk to someone.

I'd say the hiring manager, they should have the most skin in the game.

This suggestion is not incompatible with my suggestion to look elsewhere. You can do both and I probably would.

        1. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

The hiring manager has actually been good so far. I only contacted him this week after HR stopped talking to me. He seemed pretty annoyed that the process was taking so long, because they had him under the impression that I hadn't accepted the job.

Either way, I haven't quit my current job, so I'm not out anything if this doesn't pan out. It was just one of those opportunities that comes along that I couldn't pass up.

    3. All-Seeing Monocle   11 years ago

I'd say resume your job search. This is a process that should take about 1 day to close, maybe a week if you allow for severe bureaucratic dysfunction. 6 weeks means they absolutely do not have their shit together in ways that I would expect to make you re-think whether going there is really a good idea.

Obviously you don't have to let them know that you're back to looking.

      1. Tonio   11 years ago

The dysfunction could be limited to the HR CANTs, but could also be indicative of the bureaucratic paralysis of the entire org. If you have the time to show up (to your hiring manager), yeah, try that since it establishes an attempt on your part...

At this point think settlement for breached contract as much as actual oemployment potential.

    4. Mad Scientist   11 years ago

The rest of the company is just as, uh, organized. Find a different job.

    5. invisible furry hand   11 years ago

This indicates a level of dysfunction and/or budgetary issues that would warn me off. If this is what they're like before they get you into bed, imagine how badly they'll treat you once they have.

Email them saying thanks for considering you, and you're assuming that the offer has been rescinded as there as been no response to your inquiries. If they can afford to hire you and want you, this will gee them up, because they don't want to have to go through the expense of recruiting someone else. If they can't / don't, no biggy, you already suspected it from their inaction.

    6. R C Dean   11 years ago

You are getting a look at who these people really are.

Now, a few delays from HR, whatev. Its how HR rolls. But this is starting to smell like a larger dysfunction.

This is getting out of hand. Keep working them (I think an in-person visit is an excellent idea), but start looking for another job.

  39. GILMORE   11 years ago

If the NYT were "less critical" of Hilary, they'd need to stop putting words in their articles and just have a weekly-hologram of Her Holiness, combined with soft mood-music and the release of lavender and jasmine scents.

Can someone explain to me why people want the GOP to nominate Dr. Ben Carson again?

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/a.....-9-11.html

The only other question I was given time to pose came before the 9/11 dustup, when I asked Carson, who self-identifies as deeply religious, if he's ever doubted or been angry with God.

Yes, indeed, he indicated, recounting an incident in which the Lord apparently subjected him to Job-like tortures over a problem involving residential real estate. After buying a new house, he just couldn't unload the old one. "My house was on the market for five years. And I said, 'I pay my tithes. I am faithful. I try to help people. So why is this happening to me?' " Carson told me.

    The horror! THE HORROR!

    1. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

The man chose not to complain about microaggressions, didn't complain about racism, didn't complain about government not doing enough. His testing moment just so happened to be one that a ton of people can identify with, and one that tends to sink people into bankruptcy and ruin their lives. God forbid he didn't mention how those evil racist teapublicans made him question his faith!

      1. Stormy Dragon   11 years ago

The man is a pediatric neurosurgeon. Maybe, I dunno, THE DYING CHILDREN should have had a bit more an emotional impact than the time he had trouble selling his house?

        1. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

It's amazing how unempathetic progs are... you just simply have to try to project emotion onto other people without actually thinking about how they actually feel.

Doctors, especially pediatric doctors in high-risk specialties either need to build an emotional blockade to keep themselves sane or have to train themselves to have an incredibly selective memory of only positive experiences. If they were to let every negative professional experience effect them so profoundly, they would be shitty doctors for the next kid in the next room. Perhaps, because of these defenses, he wasn't as emotionally stricken by dying children as by tumult in an area of his life completely unrelated to his profession.

Perhaps, just maybe, his shields were fully functioning for his professional losses, but the house thing snuck up from behind and bit him on the ass.

Nope, can't be... he's obviously just an evil teapublican with no heart.

          1. Stormy Dragon   11 years ago

How dare you lack empathy for Dr. Carson's lack of empathy! Don't you realize how hard on him being an emotionally stunted asshole is?

            1. trshmnster the terrible   11 years ago

Keep on projecting your emotions on him! I'm sure that this highly successful pediatric doctor is secretly a sociopath!

              1. Stormy Dragon   11 years ago

Lots of sociopaths are highly successful.

              2. Tonio   11 years ago

Not had much interactions with highly-specialized MDs, have you, Trashy? Trust me, they're the worst (other than white-shoe lawyers). I overcharge the hell out of them when they're paying me directly, and punk the fuck out of them when they have to interact with me professionally.

NOBODY IS WORSE THAN WHITE-SHOE LAWYERS.

              3. Tonio   11 years ago

Wow, trashy, just wow. No, pediatric specialist does not inherently mean paragon of virtue; it's just a person who is really, really good at a subdiscipline of applied biology. Not, it doesn't exclude compassion or saintliness, but also doesn't require it.

          2. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

Oh for sure. It's been my experience that when it comes time to actually putting their money where their empathetic mouths and souls are, progs tend to, um, suddenly disappear.

All they do is shout at others about caring "for the children." But ask for something substantial and all you get is arrogant silence.

    2. Juice   11 years ago

Despite being a neurosurgeon, Ben Carson comes across as a total idiot to me.

I really like the craft beer quality and diversity here in Dallas.

There was some really good stuff there. Deep Ellum was my favorite (but most people rank them in the middle of the pack for the area). Franconia is great and I also enjoyed some of Lakewood and Community's stuff.

It sucks knowing how long it will take to try all the stuff around LA. With a celiac wife, it can be difficult to convince her to go to good brewhouses.

  43. R C Dean   11 years ago

I could probably beat Hillary Clinton with a single TV ad:

Footage of the bloodstained compound in Benghazi, with a voiceover summarizing the events (uncontroversial, no need to get into speculation). Then, pix of the four dead Americans. Finish with Hillary throwing a fit at the hearing about "What difference, etc.".

    1. Drake   11 years ago

I really doubt she'll make it through the primaries. Other Dems are ruthless enough to do just that.

      1. Tonio   11 years ago

But...they also know that it would be a long, damaging, fight to win the nomination from her, the presumptive heiress, so they fall in line because she's their team's best chance to win the election.

The real question is does the other team have the cojones and vision to run a candidate who can win the election, knowing that it will alienate their former base?

        1. Swiss Servator, CH yeah!   11 years ago

Hillary was "inevitable" last time through, right? Some doofus who had not even finished 1/3rd of a term in the Senate beat her...
