WaPo Critic Blames Seth Rogen Movies for Isla Vista Killings

Given that the University of California—Santa Barbara killer cited his inability to get laid in college as a motivation for his massacre, should Seth Rogen, Judd Apatow and Zac Efron apologize for making movies that glorify the sex and excess inherent to college life?

Washington Post film critic Ann Hornaday thinks so. In a recent article about the horrific weekend attack that left seven dead in Isla Vista, California, she implicitly blamed Neighbors, a new film that casts Rogen and Efron as residents of a fictional fraternity row:

How many students watch outsized frat-boy fantasies like "Neighbors" and feel, as Rodger did, unjustly shut out of college life that should be full of "sex and fun and pleasure"? How many men, raised on a steady diet of Judd Apatow comedies in which the shlubby arrested adolescent always gets the girl, find that those happy endings constantly elude them and conclude, "It's not fair"?

The killer, Elliot Rodger, was a wealthy social outcast with a father in the film business. According to his 141-page manifesto, Rodger was rejected by fellow students at the UCSB campus and came to hate all women for refusing to have sex with him. Clearly, the version of campus hookup culture glorified in movies like Neighbors did indeed spurn Rodger.

But is that what made him a murderer? Hornaday roped in male privilege and violence in media to complete her argument:

If our cinematic grammar is one of violence, sexual conquest and macho swagger — thanks to male studio executives who green-light projects according to their own pathetic predilections — no one should be surprised when those impulses take luridly literal form in the culture at large.

Part of what makes cinema so potent is the way even its most outlandish characters and narratives burrow into and fuse with our own stories and identities. When the dominant medium of our age — both as art form and industrial practice — is in the hands of one gender, what may start out as harmless escapist fantasies can, through repetition and amplification, become distortions and dangerous lies.

Rogen took to Twitter to dispute Hornaday, branding her "horribly insulting and misinformed," according to The Huffington Post.

"How dare you imply that me getting girls in movies caused a lunatic to go on a rampage," wrote Rogen in a Tweet.

Apatow had nothing to do with Neighbors, but has worked on similar bro-friendly comedies with Rogen. He did not take kindly to Hornaday's insinuation, either. He tweeted that it was absurd to blame movies rather than mental illness.

The angry reactions from Rogen and Apatow garnered significant media attention, and eventually drew a video response from Hornaday.

"In singling out Neighbors and Judd Apatow I by no means meant to cast blame on those movies or Judd Apatow's work for this heinous action, obviously not," she said in the video.

But she did defend her view that certain movies—those made by white males, in praise of wish fulfillment and vigilantism—are unhealthy for the culture.

In times of tragedy, violent entertainment often plays the role of convenient scapegoat. Nevertheless, there is good reason to be skeptical of such claims, especially in the immediate aftermath.

Expect to hear more media figures blaming movies, video games, mental health care deficiencies and lack of gun control in the coming days.

should Seth Rogen, Judd Apatow and Zac Efron apologize for making movies?

    Yes.

    1. ace_m82   11 years ago

That's actually the same type of logic that led to the drug war. The problem is not the supplier of the bad movies, but the demand.

I blame the people who watch the movies.

(No, I'm not accusing you of being a Drug Warrior.)

      1. Beef Brisket   11 years ago

That's actually the same type of logic that led to the drug war.

Um, no it isn't, he was making fun of how bad the movies are.

        And you're a fucking moron.

        1. ace_m82   11 years ago

He's blaming the supplier. Blame the demand(er).

"If there is a demand and the technology exists, there will be a supply."

          1. Beef Brisket   11 years ago

            He's blaming the supplier.

FOR SUPPLYING TERRIBLE SHIT THAT HE HAS TOTAL CONTROL OVER.

            Blame the demand(er).

No fuckwit, they aren't in charge of the quality of the movies he turns out.

Hence, the reason you're an idiot.

            1. ace_m82   11 years ago

              The economic illiteracy is rampant...

Yes, the director has total control (maybe) of his movies.

Yes, the Consumer has control over the quality of movies he makes. How? They watch them, giving their money to him. If they didn't watch one, he couldn't fund another one. Can you blame someone for making something that doesn't actually violate NAP?

The problem is people demand bad movies. The problem is the Consumer.

              1. Suthenboy   11 years ago

Brain cancer is a problem. Forest fires are a problem. A broken transmission is a problem. A plugged septic system is a problem. Running out of food is a problem.

This is not a problem. If people want shitty movies, then they can have shitty movies.

                1. ace_m82   11 years ago

Fair enough. I was considering putting scare quotes around the word "problem" but I use them too often.

    2. SOFL Hockey Fan   11 years ago

There is a small bit of what Hornaday says that I agree with. Movies often portray a nerdy, awkward, geek hooking up with a more than attractive woman. The guy who no one else notices. When you are as young and inexperienced as Rodgers you get the idea that is the way it really works. Of course that isn't true.

      1. LarryA   11 years ago

OTOH these "Princess and the Poolboy" movies have been around, well, since movies. See Bob Hope, Charlie Chaplin, Andy Hardy, Jerry Lewis...

And back then, nearly every kid grew up with a .22.

Oh, I despise Judd Apatow movies more than anyone. Just not for the same reasons Hornaday does.

But they're funny because penis and fart and some guys getting high and giggling. That's high-level comedy where few dare venture.

  3. Fist of Etiquette   11 years ago

Shouldn't she blame The Hunger Games? Isn't that the movie the killer's old man worked on?

    1. tarran   11 years ago

The heroine was a hot chick who murdered teenage boys.

It therefore does nothing to advance the heroic battle against the mancentric manocracy.

I've seen a movie with Seth Rogen in it, and while the experience did inspire homicidal thoughts, those thoughts didn't last much beyond the point when the movie ended, much less spur me to go out and actually kill people.

So obviously something's wrong with me. I'm clearly defective in some way if I'm not accepting the rape-and-kill programming that Hollywood intends for me.

  9. Mad Scientist   11 years ago

I'm tired of having my pet cause left out in the cold. Every time something big happens the whole world just ignores the obvious implications to the pacific swordfish population.

    1. sarcasmic   11 years ago

Does sour cream cause bike accidents? No, but it LOOKS like it does: Hilarious graphs reveal how statistics can create false connections
The Spurious Correlations site was created by Harvard student Tyler Vigen
It plots data from the U.S census and Centres for Disease Control and Prevention research
Vigen is also in the process of adding international statistics to the site
He created it to prove that correlation does not always mean causation
Other correlations include the number of Nicolas Cage films and people who died in swimming pools, and egg consumption with driving accidents

      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sci.....tions.html

The graphs claim there to be a correlation between the films Nicolas Cage, pictured, has been in and deaths, driving accidents and divorce rates

That I could see making sense.

      1. Sevo   11 years ago

"That I could see making sense."

I'm not sure where to find it now, but there's a very clear graph showing the increase in FBI budgets absolutely matching the increase in violent crime!

    2. tarran   11 years ago

Finally someone has the courage to call out the real problem plaguing America! For too long the swordfish has been allowed to operate with impunity; greedily feeding off the fruits of the labor of the American people while stabbing us in the back!

And of course HuffPo was quick to scramble onto the pile with him, with a giant headline proclaiming that he had the "right" answer to the loss of his kid. Yeah Rogan's a typical Hollywood lefty, but I don't let the political views of actors keep me form enjoying their work (with a few exceptions, here's Ron Paul talking about them, they're Trotskyites but claim to be the opposite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuefjIYKkjE). Actually unlike most people on the internet I do a good job at separating politics from everything else in life.

I've laughed at most of Rogen's movies. I think. Pineapple Express was funny, Superbad was good, The 40 year old Virgin and, um, I guess, Step Brothers? What else has he been in? Why all the hate?

    1. Brett L   11 years ago

I think the rentacop one and the pregnancy one are the ones that make them angriest. Oh, and the high school reunion porno. Its not all to my taste, but I would say he is more of just a caricature of a dude than a PUA/MRA guy. Especially in those three movies whose names elude me, but everyone seems to have seen.

      1. paranoid android   11 years ago

People hate Knocked Up? That movie had Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd watching Cirque de Soleil tripping on mushrooms, how can you hate that?

He was also decent in Zac and Mirri, even though I hate Kevin Smith movies as a rule.

[To bartender] "Two beers...oh, wait" [To girl] "Do you want one?"
        "No."
        "Okay. Two beers, then."

I dunno. I just find him affable and he has good comedic timing. I seriously don't get the hate people level at him when that anger could be directed at someone much more deserving, like Adam Sandler.

She should really pick a better actor, film, director, and genre. I nominate Shia LeBouf, Transformers (pick one), Michael Bay and action with Shia Lebouf, The Crystal Skull, and Spielberg as a close second.

At least pick a movie/genre based around fighting/killing. I think I might actually watch the Academy Awards if they did a movie deadpool like this.

"How many men, raised on a steady diet of Judd Apatow comedies in which the shlubby arrested adolescent always gets the girl, find that those happy endings constantly elude them..."

I've often thought about this myself. All those movies are indulgent fantasies that tell losers they don't have to change. Nevertheless, her claims are over the top and unfair.

    1. paranoid android   11 years ago

I've often thought about this myself. All those movies are indulgent fantasies that tell losers they don't have to change. Nevertheless, her claims are over the top and unfair.

I don't think that's necessarily true. In Knocked Up, for example, the big turning point in the plot is when Rogen's character realizes that his self-centered, loser lifestyle is completely incompatible with being there for his child and its mother, so he gets a real job and starts acting better. The movie's message is 100% the opposite of what you describe.

      1. Vincent Milburn   11 years ago

I suppose I generalized a bit, and having not seen "Knocked Up" somewhat disqualifies me, although I have seen "40 Year Old Virgin", "Superbad", and "She's Out of My League" which is said to be in that vein. I always felt that the main characters were ridiculously inferior to the female lead on every level. Even by the end of the movie, they still had little to offer the female leads. That and outside forces did all the work for them. They are tremendously weak protagonists. I would prefer, not that I'm in love with it, a movie like "Hitch" where men get to date up, but they at least had to offer something.

    2. Paper Wasp   11 years ago

Actually, all movies are indulgent fantasies. The ones that aren't, nobody wants to see.

That's what I find ridiculous about the assertions in Hornaday's piece. So you think it's bad to make movies where young men get "sex and fun and pleasure," because it sends the wrong message?

Oh, OK, let's try making some movies that are anti-rape-culture, gender-positive, and all about equality. Let's make a movie where we show fat, ugly women getting to date and marry alpha males. Let's make a movie about unremarkable young men who whimper after alpha females and don't get them. Nobody will see that movie.

Let's make all movies like that, and then Hornaday can be out of a job, because no one is going to see movies, therefore nobody needs a film critic at the Post.

  29. Beef Brisket   11 years ago

Are they? All the examples I've seen have the schlub making some fundamental change before he can win the movie.

And why is it "All those movies are indulgent fantasies that tell losers they don't have to change" gets forwarded as an argument but "all those superhero movies are teaching losers they can get superpowers and protect the world" doesn't, apart from also being moronic I mean?

Isn't Judd Apatow married to Leslie Mann? Seth Rogen's wife is better looking than he is too. It's not exactly unusual for guys to end up with women who are hotter than they are, but it helps to not kill them first.

  33. toolkien   11 years ago

This is getting to a point of ludicrousness.

I was shy and introverted when I was young. I went to a college that was 2-1 female to male and I still managed to miss the sex-party; I'd joke that some jerk was going around with my two girls. I wasn't a loser, I just failed to try. But not ONCE did a blame anyone else or imagine going on a rampage. I'm pretty sure I knew a lot of guys in the same boat, I don't think any of them would have gone on a rampage.

I watched violent movies, a little pr0n, drank too much (didn't do any drugs), and certainly could have had access to weapons if I'd really wanted them. I grew up in the "mancentric" 70's and 80's, and yet I still didn't have an urge to go on a rampage.

I'm not the most sympathetic person on the planet, I'm prone to being logical - perhaps to a point of iciness, but I never fully looked at the real 3-D people as props nor desired to wantonly kill on a large scale.

    1. toolkien   11 years ago

      cont

So enough the biography. The point is the world is filled with losers/non-starters. People who wished they had more, or had the guts to go and get more. And yet only a small handful go off the deep end.

It seems whenever these rampages happen everyone is trying to shoehorn in whatever pet peeve they have onto the subject. The fact is the world is filled with assholes who might deserve a sock to the jaw, losers who sculpt their inadequacies into cat-o-nine tails to whip themselves with, there's a tidal wave of ideas inundating us through the mass media, and there are all kinds of weapons out there too. And when all the circles are drawn in the Venn diagram there's a ridiculously small pinpoint of intersection that is at hand. And nothing can be done to change that one small pinpoint without infringing on freedoms of individuals.

When something like this happens, it's the intersection of outliers of mopes who are the complete amalgamation of all they've seen, heard, tasted, smelled, and felt through there whole lives who get hold of weapons (or make weapons) and unload. And everything they are is an outlier of whatever experience one might find in their character, and the guns they use are outliers of the population of guns.

      In short, they're a happenstance.

Sorry, too much logic and reasonableness. Totally won't do. How do you expect to take over people's lives with that kind of thinking?

I'm not going to claim that popular culture has no influence on people. Obviously it does, in various ways. (Yes, in part it's the demand of audiences, but it's also partly the supply. Note how patriotic movies often do well, but anti-war screeds are regularly produced despite the fact that they nearly all tank at the box office.)

But her thesis is just a feminist rehash of a much more convincing argument that she wouldn't touch with a pole. Remember when even Jesse Jackson was concerned about gangsta rap? The argument then was that the violence and misogyny and celebration of gang life had a bad effect on black youths. "Gagsta rap" per se may be gone, but much of hip-hop is still like that, and the connection between that mass of cultural messages and the problems of black youths are at least 1000 times more clear than any link between bro comedies and deranged white spree killers.

As a women, I don't understand the feminist movement saying men have more power in film, business, etc.? The killers whole point was that the women had the power and he wanted to be in control of it. I believe the feminist movement wants to deny that power over straight men. If you deny it, then you don't talk about. If a feminist is going so far to say a movie is at fault for the "college life culture", then let's look at what the feminist movement has done. Allowed for coed dorms, and free sex to guys. Even better, let's put 5 women down in a submarine with 200 guys for 6 to 8 months. Then, let's also not allow her to carry a fucking shot gun. Most men I meet in America (and I have lived in a few places) respect women and their abilities, feminist, let's stop this vanishing "war" in America!

We were just discussing this at dinner. WHERE are these women finding the men they're describing? We are of several generations and geographic locations and have never encountered men like this.

From a friend's facebook thread: "You don't get to just say 'yeah he was a psycho' when he very clearly laid out his motivations for doing this in a coherent, disturbing video. Motivations shared by LITERALLY EVERY MRA(Men's rights Activist)."

If I think you are wrong, you should stop talking. Just stop talking until you learn to repeat Correct Thought. I've seen a million variations on this in the last day or two. Lots of "If you disagree, do not talk to me about it."

There are a lot of feminists who are hardcore committed to Rodger's killings being an outcome of misogyny in culture, and nothing else. I find the intensity of the conviction and the vehement attempts to shut out people with different theories very disturbing.

As I've said elsewhere, these kneejerk reactions to the actions of a raving lunatic who hated EVERYONE, not just women, who killed MEN as well as women, who obsessed not only about women but also about popular men--it's enough to make me a misogynist.

Its inconceivable that anyone would call for the resignation of Ann Hornaday.

Start working at home with Google. It's a great work at home opportunity. Just work for few hours. I earn up to $100 a day. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out http://www.Fox81.com

I'll never understand how artists can be left-wing. They should ALWAYS be classically liberal/libertarian. Their work hinges on LIBERTY.

The title of this article needs to be changed, the WaPo critic blamed Seth Rogan...and other white males for this tragedy.

  43. avocats   11 years ago

How many students watch outsized frat-boy fantasies like "Neighbors" and feel, as Rodger did? NONE, so far as I can tell. Writers like Hornaday are enough to make me a misogynist, and I'm a woman.

How is it that no one has identified the true cause of this person's actions: he played World of Warcraft for YEARS, obsessively (of course). Ban WOW.

In defense of Rogen: Observe and Report is one of the funniest black comedies I've ever seen.

  46. Bgoptmst   11 years ago

I find it funny no one blames World of Warcraft for his social ineptitude. Seems much more legit than childish movie best served drunk.

Wait, I forgot. Always blame the white male.

How about those two monsters in Godzilla? Weren't they trying to have some type of radioactive sex? Shouldn't they apologize?

  48. Mauser   11 years ago

I'm getting sick this myth of the "war on women" I'm getting sick of feminists and progs trying to connect these tragedies to their agendas of a perceived notion of society's roadblocks to women's progress,
Women have more rights in court, in the workplace you males better tread a fine line lest a female coworker decides to throw down the sexual harassment card, This is Fucking America, women do not it that bad, especially with the 100+ years of progressive indoctrination, Go tonSaudi Arabia or Afghanistan where there is a severe shortage of female rights.

And I have a radical concept not too many people seem to have grasped thus far-How about blaming the Fucking SHOOTER!
