Tonight's episode of The Independents, which airs on Fox Business Network live at 9 pm ET and then repeats again at midnight, will feature a mix of familiar and unfamiliar faces grappling with how to make the world more free.

Glenn "Instapundit" Reynolds (Reason archive here) will be on to talk about his new book, The New School: How the Information Age Will Save American Education from Itself. John "Show-Me Cannabis" Payne (Reason archive here) will talk about the awful case of Jeff Mizanskey, a nonviolent pot offender in Missouri who is seeking clemency after serving 20 years of a life sentence. Party panelists Rich Benjamin (a Demos senior fellow) and Jedediah Bila (Fox News contributor) will be on to discuss President Barack Obama's latest speech on unemployment benefits and Dennis Rodman's latest foray into totalitarian diplomacy.

Also under discussion: Former defense secretary Robert Gates' White House-slamming tell-all, Oklahoma City's statehouse Satanists, and Kennedy excursion into the Polar Vortex to ask Times Square visitors just what the hell they're doing outside.

For more details check out The Independents website, which has a video page where you can watch various prior segments, and a link to help you see whether you get Fox Biz. The show will be rebroadcast over the weekend; check your local listings. And the Twitter feed is @IndependentsFBN.

No fair - by the time the show is up on the Web site I'll have lost interest.

This, so much this. Fox, the content has maybe a half-week's worth of shelf life, no more. Just upload it a few hours after premier.

Some user on youtube uploads full, almost always complete episodes of Red Eye in HD days after they air. He's only ever harassed, as far as I can tell, if the episode contains copyrighted material (usually clips Gutfeld airs). Maybe someone of gumption and patience can similarly immortalize The Independents.

Rachel Maddow lies about Koch connection to Florida drug testing law

The State Policy Network?let alone the Koch brothers!?had nothing to do with the Florida legislation. Ms. Maddow perhaps was trying to suggest that the State Policy Network is a funding source for FFGA, so that the Koch brothers have indirectly supported FFGA, albeit to a ridiculously small level (nowhere near $1,000 on a pro rata basis). But that isn't true either. I happen to know a little bit about this, since I was formerly the Chairman of the Board of a think tank that is a member of the State Policy Network.

The SPN is like a trade association of conservative think tanks, with members in every state. The SPN doesn't support the local groups, like FFGA; on the contrary, the local think tanks pay dues to support SPN. So there is no connection?not even a minute, indirect one?between Koch and FFGA. I repeat: as far as we know, no one at Koch had ever heard of FFGA before Rachel Maddow's show on Thursday of last week, and Koch did nothing?zero, nada?to support the Florida legislation in question.

So Rachel Maddow's entire segment was one big lie. Her central premise, that the Florida welfare statute was an initiative of the Koch brothers, was false, and she knew it. She made the whole thing up to fool the low-IQ viewers who form MSNBC's base. But the story gets even worse.

    1. playa manhattan   11 years ago

The Koch brothers could have both been in comas for the last decade and would still get blamed for shit that libs don't like...

      1. The Rt. Hon. Serious Man, Visc   11 years ago

Yes, but this is actually pretty serious for her. She not only knowingly lied about their connection to the law, she pretty much told them to fuck off on her show last Friday when representatives for Koch Industries requested a retraction:

In an email dated January 3?follow the link above?Koch asked MSNBC to retract, and apologize for, Maddow's fabrications. Instead of correcting her misrepresentations, Maddow, in her show on Friday, triumphantly refused, saying "I don't play requests." Or, in other words, "I lie with impunity, and MSNBC gives me cover." The left-wing echo chamber swooned. Daily Kos?remember them??headlined, "Rachel Maddow Speaks Truth to Powerful Koch Brothers." Raw Story's sycophantic take was, "Maddow scorches Koch brothers on 'correction' demand: 'I don't play requests.'" So if you are a left-winger, blatant lies about conservatives make you a hero.

So she pretty much just opened herself and her network up to legal action for defamation. I hope she has enough hubris to attempt to fight this instead of doing the sensible thing and yielding.

        1. Sevo   11 years ago

          "Requests" hell!
She doesn't do facts or the truth.

        2. Derpetologist   11 years ago

Oh man, Maddow getting sued successfully by the Kochs?!

Let the progderp roll like waters, and salty ham tears like a mighty stream!

          1. Heedless   11 years ago

I doubt they will, for much the same reason that Michael Mann was phenomenally stupid to sue National Review.

            Discovery is a bitch.

        3. Cyto   11 years ago

The left thinks a smirk is somehow equal to a pithy rebuke. Just because Stewart can pull off funny with a sarcastic smirk on the daily show doesn't mean that it is funny when you try it. And even he misuses the smirk in place of a real insight far too often.

Maddow just looks like a douchy idiot doing the smirk. This is why she can only pull a couple hundred thousand echo-chamber fans on a good day. Of course it is the echo chamber that insulates her from consequences. If a half-million viewers is plenty to keep you in your job, you don't really risk losing any viewers at all by offending the other side. So to your point, no, it doesn't matter at all to MSNBC if she lies, makes stuff up or is generally obnoxious to 95% of America.

At least the morons on the right understand that you gotta be entertaining to have a tv/radio show of any type - even political talk. At least they used to. I dunno, I haven't seen any of it in a long while.

      2. Palin's Buttplug   11 years ago

...Dennis Rodman's latest foray into totalitarian diplomacy.

I am absolutely certain that Dennis Rodman does not go to NK to freak with girls that Kim Jong Un does not supply him with.

    1. Tejicano   11 years ago

Yeah. The idea that a tyrant raised in a political/social cocoon with racist, xenophobia as one feature of its structure would willingly share his harem or any other females from his domain with a large, black male simply does not ring true with how things work in Asia.

      1. widget   11 years ago

Dear Leader supposedly attended a boarding school in Switzerland and has traveled to Japan several times, so I'm not sure the 'cocoon' description fits him well.

Kim Jong Un is obviously nuts. You're right about the racism and xenophobia. I think Rodman is eccentric, not nuts, and he might be doing this with goodwill. That is, it's better to mix it up with the nut than to leave him isolated. I sincerely hope that's the case. If he's not doing what I didn't suggest he wasn't doing, he should know darn well that those girls will be executed or sent to a labor camp the moment he leaves.

        1. Tejicano   11 years ago

Yup. I know Kim has been spotted at Tokyo Disneyland (not actually in Tokyo despite the name) as I live a few miles from there. I'm sure his exposure to the outside world is what leads him to even imagine having any sort of connection with Rodman.

I really do hope Rodman's motive is some sort of melting of political relations out of Pyongyang. I completely doubt it will leave more than a scratch on the surface though.

The idea of sex in police state hell-holes like NorKor is something hard to translate. For the elites it is part of the furniture. The plebes often lack the scantest knowledge about it. Whether Rodman is being granted "access" to anything probably boils down to Kim's specific personal foibles which nobody but a few of his bed partners could even guess at.

  42. db   11 years ago

It will be interesting to see if a Federal case over legal marijuana in Colorado will center on whether the MJ was grown/produced wholly within CO. This would present an interesting precedent/circuit split over the concept that certain types of firearms that are banned federally could be legalized at the state level if produced and used entirely within one state.

There is a case from a while back where a guy (in Arizona, I think) built a submachinegun from scratch and was prosecuted for possessing it without a valid registration (which is required under the National Firearms Act of 1934). As I recall, he was acquitted of the crime of possession of an unregistered firearm on the basis that he had produced it himself entirely withing the state of Arizona, and it had not "entered" interstate commerce. However, he was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm based on a previous felony conviction.

    1. Count Negroni   11 years ago

Wasn't there a case decided the same year as Raich on that? Went the same way, except one justice flipped, IIRC (Scalia?)

I'd love to see an overturning, but I can't imagine it happening, because if you say guns made it one state, not in interstate commerce don't fall under federal law, doesn't that also apply to wheat? And then you've overturned the New Deal. Can't see them doing that.

      1. db   11 years ago

That's the big question. As I recall, the circuits were not considered to be split because the cases were "different" enough.

Of course, that's BS, and yes, marijuana legalization has the potential to be the seed that ends the New Deal and its legal underpinnings. What I expect will happen first is that the Federal government will legalize it before the question has an opportunity to be decided in court.

          1. Smilin' Joe Fission   11 years ago

I absolutely hate the TV/radio regulations up here. Its fucking ridiculous the protectionism that they push. The internet has made it even more ridiculous and useless.

I am more and more looking for a way out of Canada. I love certain things but important things to me are completely backwards up here to what I think they should be.

On topic: Welch just dropped the "bitch" bomb... gettin feisty!

            1. Count Negroni   11 years ago

Canada's "minimum canadian culture" law/regulation had the wonderful backfiring of Bob and Doug McKenzie, though.

The regulations aren't substantially better here, and getting worse fast.

              1. Smilin' Joe Fission   11 years ago

Canada has some lighter regs when it comes to profanity and nudity. But media regulations aren't really what I worry about since I have the internet.. Gun laws, socialist health care, and the general lack of a will for liberty here are my biggest issues.

Step-mom's BIL is a big-time shooter, lots of nice "restricted" toys. Occasionally makes it over here for cowboy shoots and other range times. He's got a lot more AR's than me, but I have bigger mags 🙂

                  1. Smilin' Joe Fission   11 years ago

I don't think I'll ever go for the restricted license. If you get it and buy a restricted firearm you have to agree to allow the police to search your residence/private property at any time with no warrant and without any sort of heads up. That rule makes getting the restricted license a non-starter for me.

My Dad tore a tendon in his knee in August up here and luckily got into surgery within a week.. but this is the exception to the rule. A brand new surgeon had just started practicing in town and didn't have patient's yet so the timing worked out. Otherwise it would have been a 6 week minimum wait to get the surgery.

Cool stuff. I knew a couple of Nuc Es in college. I would have loved to do it, but everyone was advising against it due to the perceived limited job potential back in the '90s. I was in chemical engineering. My dad was a nuke in the navy, and I've always been interested in nuclear power based on him.

                    2. Smilin' Joe Fission   11 years ago

My undergrad is ChemE, got a masters degree in Nuclear Engineering.

When I started it was supposed to be the nuclear renaissance but a combo of Fukushima and cheap natural gas has stalled that out. I have hopes for the industry but the regulators need to get out of the way to allow nuclear power to innovate.

I used to work for a big US electric utility and considered a move into the nuke side but stayed in fossil and ended up leaving that just before the economic crash and the free fall in power pricing.

Agreed on the innovation needed. Some country is going to surpass us on this front some day. I'm surprised China is bothering to give Westinghouse business. Of course, once the AP1000s go commercial in China, they'll just copy the design themselves and go on their own.

I do think SMRs have potential in the US, especially since they can be located underground and/or colocated with existing or retired fossil plants where grid access is assured.

"Of course, once the AP1000s go commercial in China, they'll just copy the design themselves and go on their own."

If this happens they will have an event which will make people giggle about thinking Fukushima was anything to get upset about. The Chinese think shortcuts are the mark of a genius and their idea of safety is "Well, if it hasn't happened yet..."

    3. Archduke von Pantsfan   11 years ago

It was necessary to keep a good supply of cannon balls near the cannon on old war ships. The problem was how to prevent them from rolling around the deck. The storage method devised was to stack them as a square based pyramid, with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on 16. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon.

There was only one problem ? how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others.

The solution was a metal plate with 16 round indentations, called, for reasons unknown, a monkey. But if this plate was made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make them of brass ? hence, brass monkeys.

Few landlubbers realise that brass contracts much more than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey.

Thus, it was quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.

      1. Heroic Mulatto   11 years ago

  87. The Rt. Hon. Serious Man, Visc   11 years ago

    Logical

Conservatives, perhaps because they come to the conformist mentality more easily than liberals, tend to be more cognizant of how much political discourse is governed by the Overton window and not by niceties like intellectual honesty and rigor. So they're attempting to make an example out of Myerson for the rest of liberals: Do not even consider bringing up policy ideas to fix our income inequality problems or this will happen to you

Conservatives are clearly afraid, particularly that the public might warm to these ideas. Which is all the more reason for liberals to start pushing harder. If conservatives are this afraid to have a discussion about income inequality, it's because they know that it's a weak spot for them and a strong spot for liberals.

    Like gun control.

Advocating for guaranteed work means calling the conservative bluff on this. "Okay," you say to conservatives, "How about we start a new WPA and when people come in for food stamps and unemployment, we offer them a decent-paying job on the spot doing work that needs to be done anyway?" If they really believe that people aren't working because they're lazy, there's no danger in making that offer, right? People will turn it down and their point will be proved.

Even back then people mocked the WPA. Can you imagine what it would be like today?

    1. Bam!   11 years ago

          2. playa manhattan   11 years ago

I've had this argument countless times. Either you get it, or you don't. I've had people tell me that it's not fair that I have more money than I "need", and I tell them the story of my 20's, and the 80-100 hour work weeks with no vacations for years at a time. Some people are motivated by my story and appreciate it, and others think it isn't fair that my wife and I were "able" to work so much.

Reason works with some people; for the rest, I have my gun collection. You want my stuff, come and get it!

Haleakala. Here's a photo of Mauna Kea from the summit of Haleakala. Roughly 120 miles of visibility above the clouds....

From what I can tell she campaigned on the whole "Reduce Income Inequality" schtick, so she might be more left-wing this time around.

But I can't see that going farther than just throwing more money at education and some anti-poverty programs.

She certainly identifies with the left, eg Progressive Leaders Summit.
