ReasonTV Replay: How Washington Learned to Love Video Games
Earlier this week the Smithsonian American Art Museum announced the acquisition of two video games into their permanent collection - "Flower" (2009) by Jenova Chen and Kellee Santiago of thatgamecompany and "Halo 2600" (2010) by Ed Fries. According to the museum, "these acquisitions build upon the museum's growing collection of film and media arts and represent an ongoing commitment to the study and preservation of video games as an artistic medium."
Back in 2012, ReasonTV covered the museum's breakthrough exhibition, The Art of Video Games, contrasting it with the anti-gaming congressional hearings of the 1990s.
Here is the original text of the July 18, 2012 video:
The Smithsonian American Art Museum's exhibit, The Art of Video Games, is the latest sign that official Washington has finally learned to love Pac-Man, Super Mario Brothers, and their digital spawn. A mere two decades ago, members of the nascent gaming industry were hauled before Congress and publicly scolded for promoting violence, sexism, racism, and even crimes against humanity. As Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) stated in his opening remarks at a 1993 hearing, "Instead of enriching a child's mind, these games teach a child to enjoy inflicting torture."
But then a funny thing happened: As video games became ever more popular, brutal, and artistic, violent crime in America was declining precipitously. As parental and legislative panic over violence—both real and imagined—subsided, the gaming industry blossomed into the multibillion dollar business it is today.
The video game hysteria of the 1990s followed a predictable cycle, explains University of Southern California sociologist Karen Sternheimer: "Ever since the first nickelodeon [movie theater] opened there are people who were afraid of the impact of popular culture and tried to regulate them right away."
And just like film, rock music, and comic books before them, video games are no longer merely tolerated, but embraced by Washington, from the formation of a new congressional caucus to the placement of campaign ads on XBox games to the entombing of a Commodore 64 behind plexiglass at the Smithsonian.
"This exhibition could not have happened at any other point in history than right now," declares Smithsonian curator Chris Melissinos. "For the first time we have gamers raising gamers. I believe, from this point forward, you are going to see a greater more rapid appropriation and acceptance of video games as anything from art to a worthwhile pursuit."

So elites, blue-noses, and busybodies hate anything new or different and want to instantly regulate and control it. Sounds like...always. And then they lose. Sounds like...always.
So for their permanent collection they choose one utterly pretentious "look at me I'm so indie" game and one joke game, as opposed to say Mega Man 2 or Doom or Street Fighter II or any other game that, you know, has actually had an impact on popular culture and influenced the direction of video games as a medium of entertainment and artistic expression.
Fuck FedGov "art".
Street Fighter II changed everything. Capcom's fighters are the only things keeping the arcades left alive nowadays. And Ultra Street Fighter IV is gonna be so good.
Hey, did you know Sadira in the new Killer Instinct speaks Thai?
That's cool. The voice actress is clearly a non-native speaker. Still, she spoke more Thai than Sagat or Adon ever did!
Well said.

Ok...
Eff you! Flower is the fourth greatest game of all time!
According to whom?
According to me!
What are your top three?
In descending order: Hotline Miami, Final Fantasy VI, and Final Fantasy IV.
I haven't played Hotline Miami, but good choices for the other two! They would most definitely be in my top ten, if not my top five.
Oh, man. Give Hotline Miami a shot if you get the chance. The soundtrack is out of this world, and the scuzzy "bored kid in eighth grade study hall" art style is pretty boss, too. It's probably the most compulsively playable game I've ever run across.
I'll look for it during the Steam sale. Thanks.
Huh?
how the fuck can you like flower and not think Journey is a million times better?
Haha, I don't know myself. Journey is a lot more ambitious, for sure. It's maybe even objectively better. The sand surfing scene with the sunset in the background is probably the single most heartstopping visual I've ever seen in a game. And my first playthrough was perfect in terms of when and how other players came in and out of my game, made all the better by the fact that it's completely unrepeatable.
And yet... the simplicity of Flower just somehow resonated with me more. Go figure. Maybe it's just because Flower came first and so was an epiphany for me in a way that Journey wasn't.
Doom.
That is all.
Q-bert. 🙂
But then, I'm weird.
You are weird.
As video games became ever more popular, brutal, and artistic, violent crime in America was declining precipitously.
This is a pretty weak argument because it doesn't explain what actually caused the decline. Because in reality it involves two things libertarians love to hate, things libertarians assure us can never work, but the data is overwhelming that crime fell for those two reasons. I'll let you guess what they are.
Yo momma? That qualifies as two reasons because she's so fat.
"That qualifies as two reasons because she's so fat."
I thought it was 'cause I drank too much.
You might want to post some links to your "overwhelming data", seeing as it's so overwhelming. You do have links, right? I mean, the data is overwhelming, isn't it?
The science is settled Epi.
Global Warming lowers crime?
Screw "links", request the doi, so you can read the study first-hand.
What's the point? Libertarians would just scream "socialism" or "racism" like they always do. They haven't a clue as to how it happened, but they know it couldn't have been a result of any government action. That's just common sense, to them.
New sockpuppets are so boring. Maybe if you were smart enough to get a new shtick, it might be interesting, but you're not.
Oooh, this one's good.
This might just be the argument that converts me to progressivism.
I know that superheroes is one of them.
Is the second one the development of turducken?
The first has been the mass imprisonment of millions, the fact that whereas a petty thief in 1982 would have done two years in jail he'll do seven years today.
The second is the rise in the intelligence of the population as a result of the prohibition on leaded gasoline and other lead-polluting products, which raised the intelligence of the population.
What you seem to forget is that their intelligence was lowered right gack again hy the CHEMTRAILS.
Is this something you support and/or think is desirable? I mean, we could lower the violent crime rate to zero if we imprisoned everyone for life.
There might be some merit to that theory, but to prove it definitively would be a Herculean task due to all the covariance involved. However, assuming that it was true for the sake of argument, did it require the bludgeon of the EPA to remove lead from the environment? You don't think one company's ad department wouldn't have had the bright idea to say "Our competitor's product has lead. Studies have shown that lead makes your kid a retard. Our product is lead-free. Buy our product, you don't want your kid to be a retard, do you?"
That would have involved someone making a profit and profits are icky.
Cars have gotten far safer even when no legislation required them to be made safer.
Why? Because people don't like to be killed when their car crashes.
I just adore the argument that nothing would ever be improved if not for the state. If that's the case, then why are safety features ever invented without the government ordering people to invent them?
But without government we'd all be driving Pintos.
Which is actually a myth. There have been a bunch of recent articles regarding the Pinto that point out that the dangers were seriously overblown and that mortality rates in the Pinto were really no different than the average car at the time.
You mean the media over-hyped and distorted the truth in favor of creating outrage and hysteria? I'm shocked.
Uh...do you have any evidence for this? More importantly, how would this ever be proven since this happened to occur over a time period in which a large number of other things occurred?
I could just as readily say that the decline was due to concealed carry legislation and a loosening of gun laws. I have just as much evidence as you do.
It's not a definite but it is totally plausible and even likely. Lead is really really bad for you.
Yes, but that doesn't mean that it was a major driving factor in violence.
I've seen people make viable arguments that abortion, looser gun laws, general wealth increases, and an aging population have all caused the drop in crime.
I personally think the aging population argument is the most reasonable that I've heard.
I'd also like to point out this graph.
The crime rate in 2007 was approximately what it was 40 years earlier. So why can it be assumed that the drop from 1992 to 2007 had anything to do with lead bans? Why did lead not cause higher crime rates in the 50's and 60's?
The same point could be made for incarceration. If the decline is due to mass incarceration, then why was crime in the early 60's about where it is today in spite of lower incarceration?
This paper from the University of Pennsylvania Law School suggests the lower crime rates has to do with the increased use of mobile phone as a tool for crime deterrence.
Yeah, that makes sense. Unfortunately now mobile phones are used to coordinate crimes also.
IIRC the argument is that it was lead exposure in utero and early childhood that lead to the increase and then decrease in crime, so the effect happens 20 years after the change and peaks 40 years after.
Which roughly correlates with crime statistics.
I think that there are at least ten variables involved, including the two that he mentioned.
Lead is a cumulative poison and its effects are long-term. Considering that the rise of the automobile and when it happened (before the rise of crime), it totally makes sense.
"Lead is really really bad for you."
So....dont eat it.
Stupid comment. If it's in gasoline or lead pipes it is getting introduced into the environment in particular the air.
I probably ingest 3 or 4 lead pellets a year.
California fixed that for you...
Aren't you glad?
Especially when introduced subcutaneously via a high-velocity delivery mechanism...
Yes, but it also happened to occur at the same time videogames became popular and easy access to abortion for a couple of decades - both of which have *also* been used as explanations for the decrease in crime.
The first has been the mass imprisonment of millions
That can only account for 25% of drop in violent crime over the last couple of decades. Imprisonment of non-violent drug offenders has done nothing to make us safer.
The second is the rise in the intelligence of the population as a result of the prohibition on leaded gasoline and other lead-polluting products, which raised the intelligence of the population.
As a libertarian (Oist) this does not offend me at all.
It's pretty clear that increasing prison terms for violent offenders contributed to the decline in crime rates.
And no, that is not an argument for harsh drug sentences, the war on drugs or even maintaining prohibition.
I remember there was a Reason article about how that could only account for 25% of the drop, which is still a big chunk.
Related to this, there has been quite a spike in home burglaries/break-ins in the bedroom suburbs around San Francisco in the past year. It really is quite amazing -- the little personalized neighborhood website called "NextDoor" in our area has become almost a daily listing of people reporting events such as coming home from walking the dog, for a few minutes in broad daylight, to find the house ransacked. This in a large-lot, hillside houses, semi-rural village with virtually no crime before, one of those places where the local paper ran the police blotter for its laughs.
The local police chief held a community meeting last week and gave his theory: California has been forced by the federal judiciary to release about 8% of its prison population, about 10,000 prisoners, because of concerns about conditions and overcrowding. This comes on top of many former "life in prison" inmates being released in the last year due to the overturning of the state's "3 strikes" law. So basically, he said, there are thousands of "lower-level" criminals back on the streets in the state these days, and affluent suburbs are pretty much sitting ducks.
Well, initially they were simply drug-users. After a couple of years of incarceration they graduated to low-level criminal.
Lots of nations filled with poor (therefore dumb) people with low violent crime rates.
Also lots of nations like the US that used lead in gasoline but never had high violent crime rates to begin with.
Eh are you sure they just don't have the necessary governmental apparatus to record the crime.
This is concern troll at it's absofuckinglutely braindeadest. That is high level of achivement....golf clap attached.
I'm guessing you dined on lotsa lead chips as a youngster, but that's just me.
This is a pretty weak argument because it doesn't explain what actually caused the decline.
Dumb ass the point is that you can't make a link that violent video games cause violence. Nick does not make the claim that the games are the cause of the drop in violence. Though there is more evidence that is the case then the former.
OT: Any advice for purchasing a digital camera? I want two features: point-and-shoot, and wi-fi capable.
My wife's got drowned when she jumped in the pool to rescue tax deduction #4.
Might I suggest a third feature?
Waterproof.
But if I buy a waterproof camera, and my wife jumps into the pool with it, then it wouldn't be ruined and I wouldn't have to buy her a new one, and the economy would suffer.
Thanks for doing your part.
Think where the economy would be if everyone drowned their cameras.
Stop pushing your wife in the pool while she takes pictures.
Use a phone. Cell phone cameras are as good or better these days. P&S cameras are dead except for a small high end niche market.
Ignore SIV cell phone cameras are good but if you're remotely serious get a real camera.
which is to say a DSLR, right? 🙂
It's amazing how good cell phone cameras have gotten, it's tricky for a P&S to compete.
I find the best camera is the one that is always in my pocket. Still coveting DSLRs, though.
Cell phone cameras have really improved but real photography should be done with a real camera.
which is to say a DSLR 🙂

OT, but it'll be interesting when O'care 'life panels' (hey, the marketing dept said so!) deals with cases like this:
"Alive or dead? Brain death a complicated issue"
[...]
"Doctors declared Jahi McMath dead after determining on Dec. 12 that her brain is irreversibly and completely nonfunctional. On Thursday, the hospital informed the family it intended to disconnect Jahi from the ventilator that is keeping her breathing."
http://www.sfgate.com/health/a.....083320.php
A lot of the local coverage is claiming the hospital is 'keeping her alive' when in fact, the hospital is forcing air and fluid through a dead body.
Surprisingly, quite a few of the comments are sane. Nothing about who is paying the bills.
Not quite. The heart is still operating independently. (thanks to the availability of O2 of course, but still it's not being "forced" to operate)

"Maybe nobody makes those jokes anymore because... they're not funny?"
Sorry, that's funny as hell.
And it's a joke about the CA government, not about being gay.
If you say so.
Working on victimhood? It's not hard, just whine.
The facts don't matter, just your emotions!
Oh, fuck off - I am no "victim". In 1975 America I probably would have been.

It is actually funnier now then it would have been in 1975.

Those comments are terrible. Steyn's article is spot on, but this being National Review, most of the people agreeing with him actually do appear to hate gay people.
Then there are the leftists on there who are essentially advocating in favor of a world in which every comment anyone ever speaks must be parsed through and considered under the most authoritarian light possible.
Between this Duck Dynasty idiocy and the Santa Claus arguments we had to suffer through thanks to Slate and Megyn Kelly, it's becoming awfully hard to even pretend that either major political party has any actual adults in it.
Especially his neologism "spokesgay". That doesn't show any bias at all.
As for the Kultur War, I will let the NR and GLAAD types fight it out. I want no part of it.
Come on. I'm as pro-gay as anyone here not named Jesse or Tonio and even I thought "GLAAD spokesgay" was pretty funny.
I'm as pro-gay as anyone here not named Jesse or Tonio and even I thought "GLAAD spokesgay" was pretty funny.
Do you even need to be 'pro-gay' to establish your non-homophobe cred? I'm absolutely indifferent towards gay people. Their gayness does not make them special or people worth celebrating.
Just don't be an asshole and we'll get along fine is my attitude towards everyone regardless of race, creed, and sexual orientation. People get such a stick up their ass over a disagreement on political correctness, something they can't control and in no way affects them personally no matter how hard they try to convince themselves it does.
I just don't understand how people can be offended by jokes/humor? I get a kick out of jokes about my ethnicity.
You'll never be "equal" until you can laugh at yourself.
I'm not offended by pretty much anything. But I take these particular "jokes" in the context they're offered - i.e. 1975 middle America for Bob Hope, and 2013 National Review for "spokesgay". These are not light-hearted jibes - especially Steyn's.

Yes, anyone telling jokes that include a gay character in 1975 must mean, uh, something.
In the late '70s, the gay merchant around the corner put some light blocking under the fixtures. I asked him how in hell he got up there (seeing no ladder). Jack said; 'well, we gay people can click our heels together and float up...' And I laughed.
Jane told me the difference between a dike and a lesbian; 80 pounds and a flannel shirt. She favors (and still does) red and black flannels.
Tell me some kraut jokes; I'll laugh as much as you will.
I'm happy for you that things were so swell between you and your gay neighbors in the 70s. Things didn't go so swimmingly for most gays back then.
Things didn't go so swimmingly for a lot of groups throughout history. How'd ya like to have been an American Indian 150 years ago? Or a Jew in Germany 70 years ago?
Ya gotta be happy with where gay rights are headed right now.
President Starkey says things are getting better every day.

If people are giving you shit for being X, the best way to disarm them is to tell an X joke.
Guy walks into a bar and says to the bartender, "Hey, want to hear a Polack joke?"
Bartender says, "See those two guys shooting pool? Both Polish."
"See the guy at the table? Polish."
"The bouncer's Polish"
"Last, but not least, I'm Polish. Still want to tell that Polack joke?"
And the guy says, "Well not if I'm gonna need to explain it five fucking times."
😉
These are not light-hearted jibes - especially Steyn's.
Steyn's certainly was. Stop being a faggot and lighten up.
Now that's the way to tell a proper gay joke. Thank you.
As for Steyn, I'm not very familiar with his views in particular but I spent quite a while at NR in the early 00's and let's just say I never felt very welcome there. If that's "emoting" well fuck it.
Well that's different. Steyn's views on gay marriage are wrong but he's no homophobe. The guy is a libertarian's conservative if there ever was one.
I assume that given the way this conversation went you're gay. Obviously NRO would not be very welcoming since NRO is full of terrible gay haters, and I'm sorry you had to put up with their homophobic bullshit.
I just don't think Steyn is homophobic in any way. I think he makes purposefully offensive jokes sometimes and I vehemently disagree with his views on gay marriage, but based on his writings related tot he subject, I don't think he hates gay people.
I also think that article is overall about free speech and the exchange of ideas in a free society more than it's about gay people. That's what I meant when I said Steyn was dead on. He's clearly right about the dangers of a society in which anyone expressing opinions outside the mainstream is shouted down, insulted and fired.
Why the fuck is everyone harping on Mr. Duck's rather milquetoast comments on homosexuality? As Steyn points out, he just quoted the Judeo-Christian position in Redneck dialect.
I find his comments about the "joyful darkies" to be a hell of a lot more outrageous and ignorant.
no shit
The thing about the culture war discussed in the article is the result is not a win for the PC left but only makes the old guard mainstream less relevant.
All i see here is people disengaging from Hollywood. Not Hollywood making the world more boring.

Eh I have a hard time believing these reports. Could just as easily have been Assad's forces.
Despite Iran helping him, Assad isn't an Islamist.
OTOH, the rebels are Islamists.
So which is more likely to massacre Christians?
I find that highly unlikely. First of all, Syrian Christians have, historically, been supporters of the Assad regime for rightful fear of what would happen when the minority Alawite-elite would fall from power to the Sunni majority.
Secondly, the al-Nusra Front, which was the milita that gained control of the village from the Assad government for the 10 days has been quite clear in explaining and acting upon their views towards Christian and other "infidels".
