College and Pro Football: A Massive Waste of Taxpayer Dollars
My new col at Time.com is about the huge amounts of public dollars that are shoveled at college and pro football.
As someone who enjoys following both levels of competition, it pisses me off that people who never bought a ticket or even watched a game are on the hook for something that is in no way a core function of government.
Here's the start of the col:
As we enter the drama-filled final week of the regular college football season and the final month of the National Football League's schedule, forget about GM and Chrysler, Solyndra, or even cowboy poetry readings. Fact is, nothing is more profitable, more popular, and more on the public teat than good old American football. That's right. You, dear taxpayer, are footing the bill for football through an outrageous series of giveaways to billionaire team owners and public universities that put pigskin before sheepskin.
It's just not right when governments shovel tax dollars at favored companies or special interests, even when those firms are called, say, the Minnesota Vikings or the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University. …
Especially in an age of busted government budgets, even the most rabid sports fan should agree that it's an outrage that the highest-paid public employee in a majority of states is a college football coach (in another 13, it's a basketball coach).
And here's hoping that Ohio State murderlizes Michigan State in the Big 10 champeenship game.

Clothes-lined up the ying-yang?
Ouch.
Not a Big 10 fan (they can't even count), but Ohio State should be No. 1 over Florida State. Better conference, better coach, longer winning streak.
Why do better coach and longer winning streak factor?
This year, they are both undefeated. I believe they are both 12-0, right?
As for better conference? Just my opinion, but I am so done with "strength of schedule" and "better conference". All of the FBS schools have fantastic athletes who can run you your 4.3 40s and bench press 500 pounds, right?
The winning streak doesn't really matter, but it's a beauty contest poll, so it would sway my vote.
The coach matters a lot, if the two teams were to play head-to-head.
I'm not impressed with the ACC. It's like a week off most of the time.
"Ohio State should be No. 1 over Florida State. Better conference, better coach, longer winning streak."
Are you high? No seriously, it's a legitimate question. The Big 10 is a massively inferior conference this year. Ohio State has beaten a grand total of one ranked team this year. That being Wisconsin, who is number 21. Last week Ohio State barely beat an unranked Michigan team. Meanwhile Florida State crushed Clemson (#3 at the time, #13 now) at home and crushed Miami (ranked at the time). Ohio State's schedule has been so weak that they are talking about putting the winner of the SEC Championship game in the National Championship against FSU just so that it would be a more competitive game.
Sports? ritualized violence? I as a taxpayer MUST subsidize that, whether I want to, whether I enjoy it, or not. The ritualized sex / naked titty dancing or naked dwonky dancing (I prize my privacy, I am NOT going to 'fess up which I might be inclined towards), THAT, on the other hand, MUST be harassed and taxed nine ways to Sunday! Whether I as a taxpayer, enjoy it, or not! And WHO, I must ask you, WHO is more likely to show up at that them thar emergency room and suck down our pubic (ooops, I mean public) taxpayer / insurance money, ritualized violence players or ritualized nake titty / dwonky players?!?! WHO, I must ask you! Then WHY is one subsidized, and the other penalized? Ken anybody? EXPLAIN, as you would, to a child?!?!?!
Violence can always be justified rather widely by the law and order puritanical mindset of collective America. Sexual gratification, however, can only be justified within a very narrow context. This narrow context creates the social template dividing the norms from the abnorms.
Why would a libertarian ever root for a state school?
I understand the need to hold one's nose and attend a state school, but why root for it, especially if you are not attending the school? Root for private schools if you must root.
I believe the word is "murderize".
Bread and circuses.
Our indentured servants can beat your indentured servants!! So there!
