House Passes Spending Bill, Partial Government Shutdown to End

87 Republicans joined every voting Democrat to pass the bill

The House of Representatives passed the Senate negotiated spending and debt bill by a vote of 285-144 late tonight, with 87 Republicans and every voting Democrat voting yes. The bill funds the government through January 15, raises the debt ceiling through February 7, and allows the president to suspend the debt ceiling when the federal government reaches it, so long as Congress doesn't pass a resolution disapproving the president's exercises of that authority (read the bill, in pdf form, here).

The bill now just needs the president's signature for the 16-day partial government shutdown to end. The president spoke earlier tonight and will do so again tomorrow morning.

We overrate the effect of starting pitchers on the postseason. Kershaw is one of the two or three best pitchers in the game today, but given LA's regular season performance in his starts, the fact that he's facing the Cardinals, and Wacha, the Dodgers have an optimistic 60% chance for a win on Friday. If they win, they're left with Ryu vs. Wainwright on the road, which is a ~40% chance for LA.

Is that even legal? So the Congress just relinquished any authority over the debt ceiling at all. No future fights over the debt ceiling; Obama can just raise it at will. This has to be illegal.

This really is the end of the Republic: the Congress has just handed over their last tool to keep the executive branch in line, after simply ignoring the last several power grabs by the administration. Laws can now be ignored by any president who doesn't like them, or altered to suite his taste (ACA deadlines). And if the Congress doesn't pass laws that the President wants, he can simply order the various agencies to implement them anyways (think Dream Act or EPA regulations). You may think I need to be fitted for a tinfoil hat, but seriously, tell me, now that Congress has willing given up even the power of the purse, what check is there on the executive branch?
