House Passes Spending Bill, Partial Government Shutdown to End
87 Republicans joined every voting Democrat to pass the bill

The House of Representatives passed the Senate negotiated spending and debt bill by a vote of 285-144 late tonight, with 87 Republicans and every voting Democrat voting yes. The bill funds the government through January 15, raises the debt ceiling through February 7, and allows the president to suspend the debt ceiling when the federal government reaches it, so long as Congress doesn't pass a resolution disapproving the president's exercises of that authority (read the bill, in pdf form, here).
You can see how members of Congress voted here.
The bill now just needs the president's signature for the 16-day partial government shutdown to end. The president spoke earlier tonight and will do so again tomorrow morning.

All this was sound and fury, signifying nothing. Sigh.
Not exactly. We get to do it all over again in three months, but next time the democrats will shut the government down over sequestration instead of Obamacare.
OUR LONG, NATIONAL NIGHTMARE IS OVER.
C. Anacreon|10.16.13 @ 10:49PM|#
"All this was sound and fury, signifying nothing."
Nope.
It was sound and fury signifying the demise of any intelligent opposition to the Bringer of Light.
If you hold some cards, you don't fold on the draw.
He's certainly not popular enough to be the antichrist. Stop making the implication, it's silly.
It signifies one thing: say goodbye to the sequester.
You have to give the Republicans credit for uniting the country. Democrats have always hated them. Now Republican voters hate them too.
What the GOP got out of this deal...
Did anyone really not see this coming? The GOP may as well just rename themselves the Cleveland Browns at this point
Well I just read that Paul Ryan voted 'No', meaning a solid majority of House committee chairmen voted against the deal GOP leadership supported.
Boehner is toast as Speaker.
Massie and Amash voted no, of course.
Boehner is toast as speaker, I think there is no doubt about that. But look at the big stupid grin across his orange face. I wonder how much he got for this? Doubtless, he won't need his Senate job anymore, he can retire on what he got out of this deal.
I wasn't aware Boehner was as Senator. No wonder he lets me down all the time.
Yeah, it's hard to be in the Senate and be speaker of the house at the same time. Damnit, it's late...
I thought a return to status quo ante, or at least a few concessions, was more feasible than Boehner actually giving up leverage.
What a fuck-up.
It's really difficult to underestimate the ability of the GOP to fuck up royally in these situations.
So is the libertarian era still happening?
we missed it.
Someone tell the editors of Reason.
Just as long as they don't write a book about it.
What, exactly, does the Republicans folding have to do with libertarianism?
Francisco d Anconia|10.16.13 @ 11:48PM|#
"What, exactly, does the Republicans folding have to do with libertarianism?"
Well, the hope was there were some number of members of the GOP (higher than 3 or 4) who might actually act on the claimed goals of the GOP.
Of course, that's silly. Boehner sheds a tear, the money gets handed out and the taxpayers pay.
The only 2 libertarians in the house voted no on this. What else could we really expect? We already knew that Boehner was going to fold, it just took him a little longer to get himself some extra retirement money, cause he's gonna need it.
Hyperion|10.17.13 @ 12:08AM|#
"The only 2 libertarians in the house voted no on this. What else could we really expect?"
The gripes early on that it was a mistake were correct in that those griping presumed that Boehner was gonna fold like a newspaper at half page.
I had some slight hopes the GOP would play the hand they had; shame on me.
Would someone kindly kick Boehner in the nuts for me? Thank you very much.
That doesn't mean we should blame those who played the hand right. We should blame (and Primary) the 87 that played it wrong.
Anyone going to bash Rand for continuing to hold out?
Just wait for the AM links...
Not me.
Is the Shutdown the libertarian equivalent of the Koyabsahi Maru test?
Is there a way we can all unite and shutdown Joe Buck and Tim McCarver?
Anything that keeps Buck away from the NFL is a good thing.
You can't handle his excitement level?
As horrible as Cal Ripken is, his redeeming quality is that he isn't Tim McCarver.
Tim McCarver's redeeming quality is that he's going to retire within the next month. So even if the Cardinals lose, I win.
Kershaw goes Friday, fully rested. If they can scrape together two runs there should be a Game 7.
We overrate the effect of starting pitchers on the postseason. Kershaw is one of the two or three best pitchers in the game today, but given LA's regular season performance in his starts, the fact that he's facing the Cardinals, and Wacha, the Dodgers have an optimistic 60% chance for a win on Friday. If they win, they're left with Ryu vs. Wainwright on the road, which is a ~40% chance for LA.
But whatever happens, I'm happy--I've seen two Cardinal WS victories in the past few years and Vin's about to turn 85, so it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if I get to hear him call another World Series on the radio (or on MLB.com now that you can listen to the radio broadcast over the network video). Plus McCarver is headed to the broadcaster's abattoir--it'll be a postseason to remember.

Listen To A Woman Scream About God And Free Masons After House Votes To End Shutdown
Wasn't George Washington a Freemason?
Weren't all presidents?
Ladies and gentlemen, you have now seen an episode of acute mania. Of course, whatever nitwit "expert" they get to talk about it on TV will come up with some bullshit about anxiety provoked by pushing the nation to the edge or something blaming the right. The lady will no doubt lose her position but likely get a lovely full disability salary for life, the better to ensure no one ever asking how someone with a serious mental illness managed to get through all screening to sit in the very front of the House of Representatives.
Ahh, the horseshit clownshow comes to an end. Too bad, I was quite enjoying the mask being off.
Eh, even with the masks it was more like that orgy scene in "Eyes Wide Shut".
There might be a silver lining in this shit cloud. Watching the progtards who have to pay for Obamacare whine and scream about it. Delicious progtard tears.
Our federal government, that's Congress and the Executive branch, combined with the freepers are going to destroy the country. There is nothing that can save us short of a majority of the country going libertarian(ha ha), or the country dissolving into different state controlled territories, which is what I think will happen. Whether it happens before total economic collapse or after is the only question. We can only hope it's peaceful.

Nope.
The sign-up problems are just 'technical issues'; give us the slack you give Apple!
The costs? Hah! Rethugs and KORPORASHUNS!
Obo won't get blamed for any more than he got blamed for the brown shirts in the national parks.
Obama or even the Dems may not get blamed, but this law is still going to be one unpopular giant clusterfuck.
And even though everyone is saying, well, then single payer. How? Not unless the Dems take the house back and hold on to both the senate and the white house. In other words, it's not happening anytime soon.
Oh, and single payer? That would be an even bigger and more unpopular clusterfuck. I don't see it ever happening.
I recall that when socialized medicine was introduced in Canada the Doctors went on strike. Good luck getting something like that to happen now.
If the Rs have any sense whatsoever, they do have one way to win after this debacle. They just need to be quiet and quit fighting the ACA for now. Then, come next spring/summer, when Obamacare is the biggest clusterfuck imaginable, they should campaign as "See? This is why we fought this so hard. Now you need to elect us to control both the House and Senate, so we can do our best to fix this thing."
Except, at least 87 Republican Reps made perfectly clear that they'll hide behind "established law" no matter how much a giant clusterfuck it is.
Yes, being quiet and quitting are indicators of fighting hard. Fuck political maneuvering
Well there's some good news: GoodFellas is starting on the Encore Suspense channel right now.
good. now get your shinebox.
Even at 40,000 feet Liam Neeson will find you, and he will kill you.
Holy shit, does that look ridiculously awful.
A 2/1 release from the director of House of Wax?
Liam and Julia need to stay away from the Indian casinos.
And now the Republicans go gently place their balls back in to cold storage.
Who am I kidding? They used their wives' balls for this excursion into passing legitimacy.
Bill Maher is on right now and my info button informs me that Oliver Stone and Chris Matthews are guests.
What would someone have to give you to get you to watch that show?
Bill O'Reilly is about to go on Letterman. Should be a hoot.
Arsenic.
- old lace
A nice bottle of bourbon.
I'll watch it for a six pack and a million dollars. And if I hold on to the six pack long enough, it will be worth more than the million.
I bet Chrissy Poo has a major tingle in his leg.
"What would someone have to give you to get you to watch that show?"
The Kocks don't have enough money.
Eh, my brain is already broken from reading Marcotte and Yglesias. I'd do it for $100.
Will there be a test at the end?

For the Sake of the Republic The GOTP Must Go
There are some people who should never be put in a position of power. They don't have the wisdom, compassion or humility to wield power over others in any other way but a destructive one.
What is the Tea Party anyway? A conglomeration of racists and religious extremists, low-info, Right Wing media addicts and a sprinkling of Ayn-Rand faux libertarians (who want government out of the lives of wealthy people and corporations and in the lives of the poor, minorities and women). They are funded by wealthy plutocrats like the Koch brothers who use them as tools to get what they want.
The energy of the Tea Party and the GOP though comes primarily from the most hateful and destructive people in that group. It shouldn't be surprising that our country ended up with a rope pulled tightly around its neck. That's the only way they know to "negotiate" on race, equality, progress, etc. They can't argue based on facts because the facts dispute their positions. They can't use majority rule because they are unpopular with the majority of Americans. The way they win arguments is by self-righteously Hulking out and verbally or physically attacking their adversaries and winning through the use of force.
In this case, the adversary of the Tea Party was America itself. The nation refused to elect their Presidential nominee who would kill the ACA so they see America as being as much as an adversary as Democrats. Governing based on hatred and spite is not sustainable in a democracy?especially when that hatred is aimed at the majority of voters. They may have become very sophisticated in the art of propaganda but that too can only be sustained so long. When people have personal experiences that refute propaganda, it destroys both the propaganda and the propagandists.
People now know first hand who shut down the government, who laid off their spouses from government jobs and who threatened destruction of the U.S. economy. They are learning more and more that the ACA is a good thing, that Obama hasn't turned the country socialist and that the government doesn't work with this GOP in power
It is the important job of Democrats to keep this latest failed extortion attempt hung around each and every Republican's neck like belling a cat. That bell needs to be rung continuously through 2014 to remind voters that the election of their House Representative and Senators is a vote to support our nation or to threaten its stability and its future.
You may commence drinking heavily if you have already not.
This is why I own lots of guns. This right here.
Projection.
The funniest thing this idiot wrote, is this:
They can't argue based on facts because the facts dispute their positions. They can't use majority rule because they are unpopular with the majority of Americans. The way they win arguments is by self-righteously Hulking out and verbally or physically attacking their adversaries and winning through the use of force.
That is some true projection right there.
Try starting a logical argument on any issue with someone like that. The response you will get is always the same:
Racist! You hate poor people and want to protect the rich! Koch Brothers, Boooshhhh!
Wow, I said that was the stupidest thing, before I read this part:
They are learning more and more that the ACA is a good thing
Good grief, what a retard.
I look forward to that biting them all in the ass next year.
Republican HoR candidates need to focus on two things in 2014: the fact that soaring ACA premiums are entirely the work of Democrats sans a single GOP vote and the Democrats' de facto depression.
Anyone who says a word about abortion or Iran needs to have his tongue cut out during the primaries.
"What is the Tea Party anyway? "
The only intellectually honest thing this guy posted, he's legitimately clueless..
"A conglomeration of racists and religious extremists, low-info, Right Wing media addicts and a sprinkling of Ayn-Rand faux libertarians (who want government out of the lives of wealthy people and corporations and in the lives of the poor, minorities and women).."
He's starting to come off the rails here... Needz moar Thorazine!
"The energy of the Tea Party and the GOP though comes primarily from the most hateful and destructive people in that group. ..on race, equality, progress, etc., they can't argue based on facts because the facts dispute their positions.."FTFY
A little institutional sized, extra strength projection...
"In this case, the adversary of the Tea Party was America itself. The nation refused to elect their Presidential nominee who would kill the ACA so they see America as being as much as an adversary as Democrats."
LOL Romney, Tea Party mastermind...
"It is the important job of Democrats to keep this latest failed extortion attempt hung around each and every Republican's neck like belling a cat.."
If by extortion attempt, he means Obamacare, and by each and every Republican... he means Dems, and now.. RINOs.. the Teathuglicans are one step ahead of him. I would like to offer this poster a nice new box of crayons, in return for promising to never post again...
You mean the same Romney whose health care law in Massachusetts was the forebear of the ACA?
I'm honestly confused as to how liberals can think the 2012 election was a referendum on Obamacare. The guy running against Obama passed an unbelievably similar law.
And how they equate the rather mundane Romney, grandfather of Obamacare... to the Tea Party. Romney lost, because the Tea Party (and many other conservatives) stayed home, they refused to elect a hand picked establishment jerk-off, cut from the same cloth as Boehner/Graham/McConnell, as their president ... I suppose that irony was lost on that poster...
That bell needs to be rung continuously through 2014 to remind voters that the election of their House Representative and Senators is a vote to support our nation or to threaten its stability and its future.
VOTE DEMOCRAT OR DIE!!! Better Dead than Red!
Yeah, because voting for a federal government that lives paycheck to paycheck vis???vis one continuing resolution to the next, rather than, say... a genuine budget, that's "a vote to support our nation *not* to threaten its stability and its future." Credit limits, and living within our means... that shit's for chumps...
Whst's the point of fiat currency if you can't inflate it into oblivion?
The point of fiat currency is to fuck people out of their wealth, pure and simple.
If I recall, Obama won the popular vote by a razor thin margin.
What exactly have the Koch brothers gained from their political activism? If it's for money, they could just not give away so much to PBS, Lincoln Center, cancer research, etc. If it's for fame and respect, why have they tried to stay out of the spot light?
It's one simple step from drug legalization and the end of the Iraq War, to Koch world domination!
Oh brother, you're something,
You put me in a spin!
You aren't comprehending
The position that you're in.
It's hopeless, you're finished,
You haven't got a prayer,
Cause I'm Mr. Dingy Harry,
And Obamacare ain't goin' NOWHERE!
Hey guys remember when the government was shut down?
That was awesome.
No, when did that happen?
The government was shut down? Shit I missed it again!
I was underwhelmed...
It was totally awesome. President Not My Fault went golfing as WWII vets in DC were barricaded from the FUCKING MONUMENT THAT WAS BUILT SPECIFICALLY TO HONOR THEM.
Hilarious.
Kinda like when Doctor Zhivago returned to his dacha, only to find it had been boarded up... seized by the people, and he screamed something to the effect of "But.. I' am the people".. and proceeded to commit the crime of tearing the 'peoples' boards off of his dacha... The people is *always* everyone but you... Fucking hilarious.
Actually no, it was nothing like that.
Maybe I saw the wrong Doctor Zhivago ...
Yeah they said the government was shut down, and yet someone must be working at the IRS, because my taxes still got taken out of my paycheck.
Taxes are withheld from your paycheck by your employer, not the IRS. Your employer is supposed to send them to the IRS every quarter.
Yeah those were a rough 14 days. Fighting off mobs of furloughed government workers, father's prostituting their daughters for food, elderly people begging for medicine, and Tea Party militias male-gazing women.
Yeah, sequester shutdown was hell...
You all missed the biggest part:
" and allows the president to suspend the debt ceiling when the federal government reaches it, so long as Congress doesn't pass a resolution disapproving the president's exercises of that authority"
Is that even legal? So the Congress just relinquished any authority over the debt ceiling at all. No future fights over the debt ceiling; Obama can just raise it at will. This has to be illegal.
OMFG is this real? Someone tell me that this is some sort of twisted joke.
Good luck getting Congress to pass any such resolution to disapprove the president exercising whatever authority or power he pleases.
This really is the end of the Republic: the Congress has just handed over their last tool to keep the executive branch in line, after simply ignoring the last several power grabs by the administration. Laws can now be ignored by any president who doesn't like them, or altered to suite his taste (ACA deadlines). And if the Congress doesn't pass laws that the President wants, he can simply order the various agencies to implement them anyways (think Dream Act or EPA regulations). You may think I need to be fitted for a tinfoil hat, but seriously, tell me, now that Congress has willing given up even the power of the purse, what check is there on the executive branch?
And for those liberals who think that this is just great: rememember, it may be a Republican, hell maybe even a Bush (Jeb- not likely but possible), who succeeds to the presidency next.
Is Boehner the Ludwig Kaas of our time?
I suppose all we need now is for the Republicans to allow the USG to spend all the money they want without even bothering with a CR.
Then the Republicans, Greens and Libertarians will "voluntarily" vote themselves out of existence.
Dude you are going to get called out for Godwinning the thread, but you know what? Sometimes reminding people of Hitler is the right thing to do. Of course, Ludwig Kaas is a reference that no one will get, except for those who already understand your point. Do you ever feel like you are living the movie "Idiocracy"?
Boehner may be done for, but I don't think it will be because the majority of the R's voted against this. That 2/3 Yes vote is awfully convenient. I think just enough R's were required to vote for this so the rest could vote no. Kabuki political theater strikes again.
Indeed. If one seeks entertainment, albeit predictable and smug, why not simply watch FREE live entertainment on C-SPAN.
Egad, will government never decide to be niggardly (not a forbidden word) instead of treating tax-payers like the house (no pun intended) bad "N" word.
SO now the president has the power to ignore the debt limit unless congress acts? Now that's convenient.
They've managed to give up some of their only leverage and take attention away from the obamacare rollout at the same time. What to go.
Boehner should be taken out and hung. There is no way Congress has the votes to overide the President now on raising the debt ceiling as a VETO takes 2/3 of the vote to overturn. Spend City here we come!!!
In other words, we'll have to battle over the budget in a few months, but there essentially is no debt ceiling anymore. Obama will just use the same tired demagogue arguments to justify borrowing more and i don't see the Senate voting to stop him unless they lose the majority in the next mid terms. But that won't take effect until almost a year after we pass over this new "debt ceiling."
The Vote Breakdown by congressional district and party.
