OFA on Potential Government Shutdown: Even Karl Rove Agrees With Us
Raising money on the prospects of a government shutdown

Does anyone really think John Boehner's going to go through with shutting down the government* when the fiscal year ends next week?
Organizing for Action, formerly the 2012 Obama campaign outfit Obama for America, seems to think so, or at least seems to think saying so is good for fundraising. Oh and they'd like Boehner and House Republicans to know even Karl Rove, which OFA has used as a scapegoat to raise money on previous occasions, thinks a government shutdown is a bad idea.
The latest missive comes from Abby Witt, an OFA deputy director:
Edward --
If you had a big deadline coming up at work, what would happen if you just watched cat videos and refused to do your job?
Some House Republicans are treating the deadline for Congress to pass a budget like it's not all that serious. They've decided that they don't like Obamacare, so they're going to refuse to pass any budget that includes funding for it. And if they get their way, our government will shut down after September 30th.
So buckle up, Edward, because we're in for a showdown -- and OFA is going to spend every damn day from now till the budget deadline reminding John Boehner what he needs to do…
Some of these guys are so far gone that as we head toward a government shutdown, Speaker Boehner had the gall to call a bill that defunded Obamacare "a victory for common sense."
But we're seeing signs of pressure mounting on them to do the right thing. Even Karl Rove came out publicly to say that John Boehner needs to stand up to this extreme plan that would shut down the government.
We can't afford to play nice here -- join this fight, and tell John Boehner to get the job done:

Thanks,
Abby
The e-mail footer includes a request to donate because the "other side"--like Karl Rove?--"will spend millions to maintain the status quo"
*Even with a so-called government shutdown, nearly 60 percent of non-defense employees would be exempt.

Salaried gubmint parasites think a government shutdown is bad?
Seat's taken, yo.
If you had a big deadline coming up at work, what would happen if you just watched cat videos and refused to do your job?
It'd be just an average day at Reason?
Or in the Senate. No budget for how many years now?
Sounds like an average government employee's day at the office.
Untrue - we don't have deadlines.
Boehner'll fold like a napkin and that's a shame. Shutting down any portion of the existing federal government is always a good.
Quite literally any portion.
Think of the poor people with ATF subsidized cigarettes! What are they supposed to do?!?
Of course, maybe they can use the proceeds of ATF's cigarette and gun running to keep the lights on.
I can't wait until the day that Abby Witt swings from the end of rope hanging from nearest lamppost or tree branch.
That sounds a little severe. Perhaps settle for some public humiliation like a tar and feathering or a ride out of town on the rail while being pelted with rotten fruit?
Nah, it'd be too much fun if I were on the jury for the person on trial that hung her.
This shit's going to continue until we start gibbeting motherfuckers.
OT: I read Rush Limbaugh's Dad's speech thing today. It's probably one of the better short stories I've ever read.
I remember Paul Harvey giving essentially the same talk long, long ago. So who cribbed from whom?
My God, Paul Harvey and Limbaugh had the same Dad?! Mr. Harvey got around, eh?
Hanging in chains would do in a pinch.
Doesn't sound too severe to me.
"....a tar and feathering or a ride out of town on the rail while being pelted with rotten fruit?"
Look it up. Most people didnt survive that, and it was much more severe than a simple hanging.
Please, why will you not remove your email from your name?
Do you like torturing me with Reasonable glitches?
He's just negging you Irish. When he finally turns it off you'll be so grateful you won't be able to help yourself around him. Try playing harder to get.

How hard would it be for the folks in charge of the server squirrels to write some script that notices that two identical comments have been posted, and delete one of them?
easier would be to make you wait 30 seconds between submits.
double posts come from double-clicking submit

Or more like candid upskirt Clara Petacci?
If Rove and Obama agree on something, I know I disagree with that shit.
Exactly who do these types of letters work on? I get letters with the same tone (mostly from libertarian and conservative sources) in the mail frequently.
The language and tone of these is usually the worst kind of concern trolling, but somebody somewhere must actually take action based on them, or why would they be sent?
but somebody somewhere must actually take action based on them, or why would they be sent?
I'd wager a good 25% of recipients actually respond with a donation.
You probably wouldn't be surprised at all how many people you can very easily motivate with any random appeal to emotion.
No, I wouldn't be surprised. My initial instinct is to say "oh, well, the average person is just a lot stupider than me" but I'm sure--sure that there are some really smart people that get motivated to donate to causes they already agree with by this type of language and appeal to emotion.
Which is just shameful.
I wouldn't be surprised either.
Today, the local news had a story taken from the network about some "safety" group pissed that Obama isn't going far enough on requiring rear-facing cameras on cars.
They cut to some woman who, according to the chyron, was a "safety advocate", but she was nothing more than a mother who ran over her daughter and was using her emotions to try to bully people into having this rule passed. I wanted to reach through the TV screen and strangle the woman. I don't think the report ever named the organization.
I don't know any current stats for political direct mail solicitation results, but direct marketers these days get more like 2.5%-3.5% response for a letter-sized envelope sent to a house list. 25% would be a miracle.
And there's the math. If I send out 100 of these letters, it's cost me $40 in postage (actually less since I'm sending bulk). I get 2.5 (the low end) responses each agreeing to send me $25 (average is probably higher). That's $62.50. Nice return on investment.
The best fund-raising package I ever received (back when I used to fill out the "bill-me-later" blow-in cards with a fake name so I could read Alexander Cockburn in The Nation for free)was a animal rights solicitation with a packet of color photos of dogs and cats for sale in Asian food markets.I laughed so hard. I used to whip them out for shock value back in the ancient pre-internet days.
"Looks tasty, I'll have two of each please."
I don't know, guys, this shutdown thing is starting to scare me. The way they're talking, it could be the sequester times a thousand.
So, we'll wastefully spend even more money while being told we're cutting shit to the bone?
And sequester was 9/11 times 1000!
That would mean....
Dude, that's not even a billion.
All the cool kids in DC add at -least- a billion to their bullshit pet project.
They shot their load too early with the sequester. No more White House tours. Can't afford them. And then the president takes his family to Africa to the tune of a hundred million dollars. Idiots.
"The way they're talking, it could be the sequester times a thousand."
YES!
And Willy gets another BJ, Hilary gets pissed, gets a divorce and the nomination goes to Biden!
See? It's all good!
I really wonder if, in a way, Obama hasn't blown it for Hillary. So many were so thrilled to Elect the First Black President, and all except the Kool-Aid drinkers know what a catastrophe that has been. I think that takes a lot of the air out of the "Elect the First Woman President"! bandwagon. Too many are too cautious to say it, but they know that last affirmative action hiring decision didn't work out so well.
What I worry about is how they will probably softly backpeddle this with assurances that the hildebeast has the "real world experience" that O'Bozo lacked.
I can only hope that she has some twisted "Howard Dean scream" moment on live TV. Something that reflects the depths of her soul which cannot be unseen.
I think there's enough crap in her background to hinder her far more than anything like that hindered Obama. Whitewater, Rose law firm billing records, the options scam, the "under fire" lie, and now the Clinton Foundation scandals, are going to hurt.
Plus, while blacks automatically voted for Obama, and lots of people felt it was "the right thing" historically, many women do not like Hillary, and Americans have much less feminist guilt than racial guilt. The fact that she and her "husband" lead totally separate private lives is a negative as well.
I'd like to agree. But, remember, they re-elected him. They should have known what a disaster he was then.
Option B was nothing to write home about.

Oh please, as if Boehner weren't batting for Kos readers to start with.
Isn't he?
...what would happen if you just watched cat videos and refused to do your job?
Best day at work EVAR?
When I ran a third shift warehouse and we had a few hours to kill between loading trucks, I would let my crew drink beer and play football. Was I the best boss ever? Yes, without doubt.
And I bet they got the job done with smiles on their faces.
Let me know when you have an opening, should you go back to such a job again.
Hmmm. Organizing for Action is a 501(c)(4) organization, just like the Tea Party groups that were targeted by the IRS.
Given that OFA literally began its life as Barack Obama's reelection campaign, runs the @BarackObama twitter handle, still owns the http://www.barackobama.com website, and spends all of its time talking about how great Barack Obama is, why hasn't OFA been shut down by the IRS for being too involved in political activity instead of the social welfare that 501(c)(4) organizations are supposed to engage in?
If an organization called Patriots for Action had begun its life as Mitt Romney's reelection campaign, ran the @mittromney twitter handle, owned the http://www.mittromney.com website, and spent all of its time talking about how great Mitt Romney is, I wonder if the IRS would similarly look the other way.
Nigga Please. Article II, Sec. 34 of the Fuck You That's Why Clause is black-and-white on this issue.
If they can't rub their steaming pile of hypocrisy in your face, it doesn't feel to them like what they crave the most, power. It feels like impotence.
Plus, isn't calling your website "mybarackobama" a little creepy?
Creepy. as. Hell.
Sure, but Imbarackobamasbitch was mysteriously locked up.
Shriek and Tony were last seen squabbling over the domain name...
This is one of my top points regarding the IRS scandals. Remember, the tea party groups were given extra scrutiny because they might (gasp) endorse a candidate! The IRS rules don't allow that! So the "but the IRS did this to lefty groups, too" argument is gone.
I am not saying you should fuck with Abby Witt on Twitter, but you should totes fuck with Abby Witt on Twitter.
At least her face matches her soul:

I'm a big fan of the circle jerk that the OFA shitheels get into on twitter. All the people in OFA retweet each other. The @Barackobama handle (which is run by OFA) retweets stuff from the OFA handle itself. Individuals in OFA retweet things from both the @Barackobama handle and the OFA handle, both of which are, again, run by Organizing for Action.
Retweeting things that were written by yourself is like laughing at your own joke.
I also appreciate that blue D-U logo that Democratic United members put on their avatar. Great way to identify yourself as an idiot
They've got to give those millions of fake followers something to read.
Goddammit. I clicked your link and read the first page of twits. Now I feel like I need to puke. Thanks.
Suthen, are you attached to the idea of associating your moniker with your email address? If not, could you please change the association to a link to a website? Any website will do (but lesbian porn is preferred).
It is messing up the people who use the Reasonable extension in Chrome.
Go to the top of the page where it says "You are currently logged in as: Suthenboy." Click on Suthenboy and paste the web address of the website in the box that says website. Then hit update.
Thank you in advance for making my life just a little more bearable.
Wouldn't it be easier to fix Reasonable?
(Well, the best thing would be to fix H&R so that people don't need these extensions. And get rid of 24/7 too.)
Any website will do (but lesbian porn is preferred).
Why are you othering poor Jesse?
Why are you othering poor Jesse?
Thanks for looking out Ted. At least make it some kind of extremely kinky lesbian midget porn so it has entertainment besides two girls wishing they had a cock to play with.
Here, fill out your request on this TS form.

"At least her face matches her soul"
With a description like that you expect people to click no that? Sounds like licking a dog turd on the sidewalk just in case it actually is a chocolate bar.

More than 19.5 million of his 36.9 million Twitter followers are accounts that don't correspond to real people.
Heroic Mulatto, all troll'n aside. Wish u best with your situation with your kid.
Thank you, I appreciate your good wishes.
In case anyone was wondering, my daughter has a severe form of thalassemia. She requires blood transfusions often, which have all sorts of negative effects on her body. We recently learned that her body's level of iron has now passed the point where its healthy and will hurt her organs, so we much begin chelation therapy.
I'm really sorry to hear that. I'd never heard of that disease, but it sounds incredibly difficult.
I wish you guys the best.
Thank you.
Damn, I'm sorry to hear that. Best of luck to her and your family.
Thanks.
Damn, sorry to hear that HM.
Best of luck to your family and your daughter.
Good luck, guy.
That's terrible - best wishes for a cure!
South Park season premiere right now is making fun of the NSA, Twitter, and Alec Baldwin.

So...Toure pretty much just outed himself as being a literal Communist, right?

Blame the Tea Party!
The last sentence is somewhat strained, but would that it were true. I'd like to think the Tea Party is rife with firebrands wanting to burn it down and start afresh, but it's more milquetoast even than the Occupy movement.
This is idiotic. They aren't trying to blow up government to save government. If they were trying to blow up government, it would be to save America from the ravages of an overly powerful centralized authority.
Once again liberals show that they don't know the difference between government and society.
Government either employs or significantly subsidizes everyone they care about, or claim to care about. Government is their society.
Bu..bu....but government is America, you igrunt fascist anarchist.
Fun Fact: The man who wrote that drivel is Norm Macdonald's brother.
Yup. And Norm is the better newsman.
He's also a government employee.
"The Republicans have about 40 of these characters in Congress at the moment, a small band of extremists who in the name of ideological purity are now threatening to shut down and essentially bankrupt the U.S. government."
What is bankrupting the US gov't ain't 40 GOPers.
The new symbol of the GOP: an elephant (or a dog?) with A TAIL THAT IS A FLAMETHROWER.
I want that. I want that A LOT.
Just like Abby said I was amazed you could raise thousands of campaign dollars just from working on your PC at home. When I saw the new President I had to believe it.

What does Barack Obama look like?: Samuel L. Jackson launches tirade at President Obama.
Samuel L. Jackson has blasted Barack Obama for 'promoting mediocrity' in the United States by 'dumbing down' the way he speaks to ordinary Americans.
In an expletive-filled tirade about - of all things - grammar, Jackson told the President to 'be f*****g presidential.'
The Holywood legend, who publicly backed Obama in 2008 and 2012, questioned why the Harvard-educated former law professor chooses to drop the letter 'g' from the end of his words.
In an astonishing rant, Jackson, 64, said that the President was trying too hard to 'relate' to normal people instead of being true to who he really is.
[...]
Speaking in an interview with Playboy magazine, the actor questioned the president's reasons for changing his speech, saying: 'First of all, we know it ain't because of his blackness, so I say stop trying to "relate."
'Be a leader. Be f******g presidential. Look, I grew up in a society where I could say "It ain't" or "What it be" to my friends.
'But when I'm out presenting myself to the world as me, who graduated from college, who had family who cared about me, who has a well-read background, I f*****g conjugate'.
You voted for the panderer Sam.
English, motherfucker, do you speak it?!
That should have been a semicolon, shouldn't it? "English, mother; do you speak it?!"
A colon seems more appropriate. ENGLISH, motherfucker: do you speak it?!
Say "what" again! Say! "what"! again! I dare you! I double-dare you, motherfucker! Say "what" one more goddamn time!
What?
Mark Leiser, a law professor who writes a tech law column for The Drum, says he was denied boarding on an Easyjet flight after he tweeted critical remarks about the airline (he said that a delayed flight had caused a soldier on his flight to miss a connection and that Easyjet had refused to help). According to Leiser, a member of staff told him, "You're not allowed to talk about Easyjet like that and then expect to get on a flight."
This sounds like unmitigated bullshit. I'm thinking he got trashed in the terminal and was denied entry at the boarding gate.
Yeah, highly unlikely a customer service rep at an airline counter was checking tweets, specially on customers waiting.... and then even if they did - unlikely that someone going through that much trouble to screw over people based upon their tweets would then announce it directly "yeah, I did that"....
Then again, NSA, TSA... nothing surprises me much anymore...
Possibly, but the boarding bitch isn't TSA, and I doubt TSA cares whether one of the airlines is badmouthed on twitter while there are wheelchaired grannies to grope.
Anna Faris just made my celebrity waiver list.
Basketball scene...What's Your Number?
wait what show is she on again?
Mom? I've never seen it.
If they shut the government down, does that mean the NSA will stop spying on us for a while?
haven't rfta, haven't rtfc, but all things otherwise considered, Worst. Poster. Ever.
It would be a reason to hope that maybe they would shut the government down.
There are a lot of good reasons to shut the government down--a number of them listed on the front page!
If they really did shut the government down, maybe the ATF would stop going all Keystone Cops with cigarettes. Why the hell do we need special tobacco cops, anyway?
If they really did shut the government down, maybe the HHS would stop issuing stupid ass reports for a while.
If they really did shut the government down, maybe the IRS wouldn't have the manpower to do things like rip off innocent grocers for doing nothing...for a while.
I was around when Newt Gingrich/Clinton shut the government down--and I thought it was great! It sucked if you were trying to get a passport or something processed, but if we did go a few months without a federal government for a while, maybe a lot of people would find out that they kinda like it!
didn't mean that as a reply to anybody but Ken, I believe the answer to your question is hahahahahahahahahaha no
stupid threaded comments...I think I also meant *comma* but Ken...that thing at the top of the page is the worst poster ever, not you
That would be up there with the Newhart series finale.
Since Walt knows where the Nazi compound is couldn't he just pull that phone trick again and call the DEA and say he's hiding out there?
The DEA then storms the compound heavily armed and shoot it out with the Nazis.
I'd be disappointed if he used the M60 for a suicidal frontal assault on the compound since we know he's smarter than that.
Does he also make himself 25 years younger in the process?
Some House Republicans are treating the deadline for Congress to pass a budget like it's not all that serious.
In marked contrast to the Democratic senate that hasn't met its constitutional duty to pass a budget in 5 years.
Obama for America. Formally endorsed by Karl Rove.
Sounds like a very good plan to me dude.

Challenge to Ed Krayewski: Next time, post a Republican email containing ridiculous nonsense. There's plenty to choose from!
If Karl Rove agrees with you, you're probably wrong. Your position and argument are still weak shit.
Did you mean: interest?
Fuck off, Merkin.
Which of our regular trolls is this a sockpuppet for?
6/10 troll, needs more thinly-veiled lefty talking points masquerading as impartial middle-of-the-road opinions.
..."This is why I support a mixed economy with high taxes on capital intrest and capital gains to support greater prosperity for everyone else."...
Yep, that ol' 'something for nuthin' suckers in idjits like you day in and day out.
Have you seen the interest rates for savings lately? Who the fuck is sitting back and watching it grow all lazy like?
Jesus Christ you're stupid Merkin.
You can put your money in the bank and sit back and watch it grow, you don't do shit.
Under Obamunism 1,000,000 deposited in a bank in 2012 would nave incurred $2,500 of interest and have the 2012 buying power of
$984,150
"You can put your money in the bank and sit back and watch it grow".
LOL
Are you sure it's American? I don't see any of the racial stuff in that rant.
White Light? Good bet.

"I am actually a right-winger."
Naah. You're a run of the mill idjit.
This makes the troll sound more like a Shreeky sockpuppet. I presume it scores a 94% on the right-winger purity test?
This is definitely American.
White Light|9.25.13 @ 11:11PM|#
"It's not something for nothing. It's called taking something from someone and giving it to someone else."
Yep, that ol' sump'in for nuthin' And an idjit dumb enough to claim otherwise.
So, theft.
I mean, think about it. Western society has become decadent, weak, and lazy, and is soon to collapse. The upcoming generation, people such as yourselves, want nothing more from life than to grow fat sitting around on computers all day, masturbating, drinking, and taking drugs. You are encouraged in this behaviour by corrupt politicians and absent new age parents while your societies and economies collapse around you. Meanwhile the Muslim Ummah, or brotherhood, grows rich on oil wealth and trains its upcoming generation to serve Allah, and to fight, willing to give their lives if necessary for the cause. The brave mujihadeen of Nairobi have surely earned their place in paradise as do the suicide bombers who strike daily into the heart of the devil state of Israel. We are living among you, in Europe and America, and we are outbreeding you day by day, slowly taking over.
It's simple - capital well invested is the best form of charity known to man as employing people does a great deal more for society and the individuals hired than any handout could possibly do.
Even easier to understand - when you tax stuff, you get less of it. So tax capital interest and capital gains, you'll get less money for people to borrow to buy things like houses and cars and less people investing - or in the end, less capital.
& BTW - libertarians at least do not claim capitalists are doing what they do because it's moral and their goal is to help everyone else - only that when incentives are aligned correctly through market mechanisms, the end result in people working for their own gain will help others.
Rising tide and all that...
good to know. ignored.
As I've said before, American is all for socialism, as long as its limited to Americans of pure European descent. He is literally a National Socialist.
So while White Light correctly identifies the sin of riba (usury), it is not enough. You must fully commit your life to Allah and his true path for us, Islam.
Allah has a plan for each of us. He means us all to be good Muslims and live by his rules, as set out to the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh). Your sinful lives and wicked ways go against His plans, and you will be tortured for eternity in hell for your iniquities. Repent now and revert back to the one true faith.
Where your joke of a faith, which no one in your society believes in anyway, tells you to "love", be "tolerant", and "turn the other cheek", the Quran teaches us to "Kill the unbelievers wherever you find them, capture and besiege them and prepare for them every kind of ambush."
I guess we have our first Muslim troll?
The Holy Quran also says "Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies, of Allah and your enemies".
How can you hope to win your futile so called 'war on terror' against us? You have become weak, and no longer willing or able to fight. You even elected a pacifist president with Muslim sympathies to try and placate us. It's only a matter of time until we win. Even now your soldiers contine to die on the battlefields of Afghanistan, and for what? The moment you leave, it will be back to traditional Sharia law. Your technological advances count for nothing if all you do with them is watch porn and play video games. We will continue our jihad on the west, to maim and kill those who oppose or insult us.
White Light, my brother! See the truth for what it is and revert to Islam immediately. It is your only hope of survival.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Hahahahahahahahahaha
It's muriken, doing his double sign-in gig.

"I guess we have our first Muslim troll?"
A day or so ago, there was someone posting under 'African American' who did a 3-post riff on the superiority of blacks in response to 'murkin's ignorance.
This one is suspiciously similar, to the extent that it seems someone is doing spoofs on 'racial superiority' one-by-one.
H&R: Where our trolls have trolls of their own.
Is this a good sign?
I don't get it. Is Murkin making fun of Islam or admiring it?
He's not really a racist. He's just a troll that tries to run multiple fake racist handles.
I don't get it. Is Murkin making fun of Islam or admiring it?
I had assumed this was you, HM, fucking with merkin.
I guess we add this to the list of American's identities. Off the top of my head, he's pretended to be from Alabama, New York, California, Israel, Australia, pretended to be Jewish, Muslim, pretended to have just conveniently visited Japan, pretended to have had an Asian girlfriend ... and I know I'm leaving several things out.
Sevo, you may be right. I actually wouldn't be surprised if it was someone trolling American. That was actually my first thought. It would be weird even by American's standards to troll himself like that.
Yes, I think this is someone trolling American, very effectively I might add.
No shyte. Even if you have the right financial background and up to date intel it is difficult to make - years over year - gains which before 25 years ago were what the average savings account paid.
Just sticking your nest egg in a bank today you would need to literally have a million dollars to be able support the lifestyle of a refugee.
I think it's all the same troll, employed by George Soros and/or the Tides Foundation, probably employed by Media Matters, to degrade a libertarian discussion board, sow confusion, exhaust the server squirrels, and waste pixels.
I know. I have a good chunk in savings, and the interest isn't even a dollar a month.
You know who else was a...ah, nevermind.
The male Mary Stack?
Trolls all the way down. And who lets them down? The Cleveland...aack [I am strangled by the Stop Lame Jokes Martyrs Brigade]
Don't forget that interest would also be taxed... even though you lost buying power
