70 Percent of Americans, Including 59 Percent of Democrats, Oppose Raising the Debt Ceiling
Congress will soon have to focus its attention on the debt ceiling, which the nation is expected to hit in mid-October. Seven in 10 Americans, 70 percent, oppose raising the debt limit, the new Reason-Rupe poll finds.
A majority of Democrats, 59 percent, along with 69 percent of independents, and 83 percent of Republicans are against raising the debt limit.
Of the 24 percent of Americans in favor of raising the debt ceiling, Democrats are more than twice as likely as Republicans to support it (35 percent of Democrats are in favor, compared to 15 percent of Republicans), while 25 percent of independents favor raising the debt limit.

So digging out the debt basement it is, then. Yeah, we'll just see how many Democrats (or Republicans, for that matter) favor holding steady on the debt ceiling when they're told a government shutdown - virtual or real - is the only alternative. It will be the Sequestercaust times a thousand.
The other alternative would be to pass legislation that cuts spending in an intelligent way.
Feel free to respond after you stop laughing.
I suppose Congress could go back to approving expenditures individually.
Keeps them too busy to cause trouble on other fronts.
People saw that the predictions of doom over sequester did not pan out. The screams of bloody murder and dead children that will come out of the Beltway classes and their media toadies will likely be even less effective this time.
No one but government employees and the media and Politicians will care if there is a shutdown.

Pollgrom.
FoE's sad devotion to that ancient shaky-camist has not helped him conjure up the stolen email data, or given him enough clairvoyance to find the statist's hidden fortress.
You have trolled me for the last time, Admiral.
I like these polls. So, POLLENFREUDE
IT BEGINS
Interesting... So does Obama!
And why do we call it a debt ceiling? Shouldn't it be called a Debt Cloud Layer?
100% of reasonoids favor only one post per poll.
Untrue, I'll go so far as two articles and unlimited commentariat posts.
This is a flawed and irrelevant poll. If you really want to predict what is about to happen when we reach the debt limit, the poll question should be:
"Should the extremist republicans in the congress continue to recklessly hold our economy hostage by threatening a government shutdown over the debt limit, or should they cooperate with President Obama in his efforts to move the country forward to prosperity by removing the restrictions of the debt limit that threaten to derail the economy and destroy the full faith and credit of the United States?"
The extremist republicans strike again!
Funny how it is always the Republicans. When Reagan was President and the Dems owned Congress, it was that evil Reagan who shut down the government by vetoing a CR. When Clinton was President and the Republicans held congress, it was those evil Republicans in Congress who shut down t he government by passing a CR Clinton had to veto.
It seems it is always the Republicans shutting government down no matter who is in the White House.
Well, the party with the loudest 'anti-government' rhetoric is going to be the one saddled with that.
By the stupid, yes.
I'm hopeful that 'anti-government' becomes a badge of honor rather than something with which one is saddled.
So the party that wants to cut spending is the one shutting down the government? If you shut down the government to resist spending cuts, you are not "shutting down the government" but if you do it to enact them you are?
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
When the government shuts down and people show up at the Smithsonian or the VA and are turned away they are told, with some reason, that it is shut down because they have not been funded. The party which has the loudest rhetoric on 'drowning government funding in the bathtub' is going to take the rap for that.
Firemen First
Well, the party with the loudest 'anti-government' rhetoric is going to be the one saddled with that.
Makes sense. That explains why they blamed the pro-government party for deficits under Reagan, but gave them credit for Clinton's surpluses.
Yeah. Those damn Republicans who, when they controlled Congress under Bush, spent more than the Democrats! Medicare Part D! They're trying to eliminate government altogether! Aaaauuugghhh!
People often believe rhetoric over reality. The Republicans count on this in other instances, so I do not feel sorry for them when it bites them here.
I would like to see a poll regarding federal spending, debt limit, etc. where 'Fuck You, Cut Spending!' was an optional answer.
Most Americans are simultaneously in favor of lowering taxes, increasing spending, and eliminating the debt. Given that pulling out just one leg of the stool in isolation doesn't tell you anything meaningful. What are they willing to support to avoid raising the debt ceiling?
