Obama's UN Ambassador Nominee Criticizes UN Inaction on Syria

Samantha Power, Obama's nominee for ambassador to the United Nations, has spoken out against the United Nations Security Council's inaction on Syria, calling their response a "disgrace" at her confirmation hearing.
From Reuters:
"We see the failure of the U.N. Security Council to respond to the slaughter in Syria - a disgrace that history will judge harshly," Power said in testimony that also praised the New York-based world body.
Under questioning from senators, she called Syria one of the worst "cases of mass brutality" that she has ever seen.
Power, 42, a former White House national security staffer and journalist who won a Pulitzer Prize for her study of U.S. failures to prevent genocide, is seen as an advocate of an activist foreign policy.
She also said she sees at the United Nations "unacceptable bias and attacks against the State of Israel," and "the absurdity" of Iran serving as chair of the U.N. Conference on disarmament.
Power is expected to easily win Senate approval to the U.N. post.
Power's comments come a few days after Obama's plan to arm rebels in Syria met opposition on Capitol Hill and British Prime Minister David Cameron backed away from plans for the U.K. to send arms to Assad's opposition.
Power is a fan of humanitarian interventionism, having argued for intervention in Libya. Her beliefs are motivated in part by her experiences in the former Yugoslavia, where she worked as a journalist during the 90s.
In the likely event that Power is confirmed by the Senate it is unlikely that she will be able to significantly influence the U.N. into being more proactive in dealing with the situation in Syria, especially given that Russia, which has a permanent seat on the U.N.'s Security Council, is one of Assad's strongest allies.

Syria is one of the few areas I think Obama has done a relatively good job. If we had a McCain administration we'd have a US green zone in Damascus today and US troop body counts from Syrian insurgents running every night on the local news. He's done a pretty good job of resisting the calls from McCain, Graham and people like Powers to jump in there.
Doing nothing isn't that difficult, and it shouldn't be praiseworthy, even when it's exactly what is called for.
From what I've seen of Obama I'd like to see him do a whole lot more of nothing and I'd be willing to praise him if he did. I'm not holding my breath.
It would have been very praiseworthy in 2003.
Bushfags!
Yep.
"a disgrace that history will judge harshly"
Only because people like you write the histories. Just as "history" condemns the US for staying out of St. Woodrow Wilson's League of Nations. And credits FDR for Ending the Depression.
It is interesting that apart from a political bias history tends to get written about calamity more than normalcy. Look how much ink Wilson or FDR get in history books and how they glide right over some like Coolidge. Coolidge just oversaw peace and prosperity, how boring is that! And no leadership there, leadership is what happens when someone gets their nation into a mess and then out of it of course.
The majority of historians seem to be willing court historians who love them some power. This especially true when the reins of power are in the hands of progressives.
Pay attention to how much "real historians" gloss over the fact that Woodrow was an unabashed racist (the man who segregated the federal government) and used the Sedition Act to jail his political enemies and anti-war protestors. FDR was a great admirer of fascism when it was fashionable to like Mussolini.
People have no clue it was fashionable among the left to like Mussolini, at one time.
Meet the next asshole who will push the country into getting tons of people killed.
Yes, but those people will be dying for important things, like regime change, and America's foreign interests, and Senatorial re-election campaigns, and lucrative defense contracts.
Surely they wouldn't mind making the ultimate sacrifice for such noble causes, if they had the choice. They won't, of course, but you know what I mean.
Does the word, "chickenhawk, "come to mind? Or does that term only apply to Republicans?

Has she no respect for the proud tradition of the UN doing mostly nothing?
she was one of the prime agitators behind the administration's cheerleading for overthrows of Mubarak and Qaddafi. The former sure worked out well; the latter is a work in progress.
She wanted us to intervene in Rawanda. Boy that would have worked out great.
Maybe she wants them to engage in their other tradition of child sex slavery.
Yeesh, another warmongering harridan who looks like the back end of a horse.
I knew her in law school. She was actually quite attractive in a gingery way. She also had a nice Irish accent.
I saw we do something, lets put Samantha Powers on a C-17 with a M-16, a bowie knife and a parachute and kick her out over Syria. We will later charge her estate for the cost of the M-16, bowie knife, parachute and fuel for a C-17.
I kind of wondered why she hadn't already resigned in order to raise an "Abraham Lincoln Brigade" to go into Syria and take care of this shit.
Nothing alleviates wholesale slaughter like picking one side and helping them massacre the other. Maybe we can host a peace summit to lubricate the "peaceful, democratic resolution" to another American-armed and -advised squabble.
Especially when the side you pick is Al Qaeda!

Somebody get Samantha a backpack and a gun. Good luck!
Isn't this the bloodiest Ramadan in Iraq since we left?
Why won't history judge SYRIANS harshly? They're the ones doing the slaughtering, and apparently both sides want to do the slaughtering. US/UN forces COULD step in and put a temporary damper on the slaughter (after an initial run-up), but if it means staying there forever AND merely pushing the slaughter into another country where we aren't (which seems to be what stopping the slaughter in Iraq has done), then the billions spent is nothing more than a symbolic gesture (and the symbol isn't necessarily something to be proud of).
Is there a less effectual job in the executive branch than ambassador to the UN?

"War is good when my TEAM does it!"
Is...is this one of those face-melded pictures of a ginger woman and Obama? That looks like Obama in whiteface.
Who picks their best concern troll face for their official portrait?
Take up the American's burden--
Send forth the best ye breed--
Go bind your sons to exile
To serve your captives' need;
To wait in heavy harness,
On fluttered folk and wild--
Your new-caught, sullen peoples,
Half-devil and half-child.
Take up the American's burden--
In patience to abide,
To veil the threat of terror
And check the show of pride;
By open speech and simple,
An hundred times made plain
To seek another's profit,
And work another's gain.

Nobels don't polish themselves. That's what the help is for. Blow the place to smithereens, make the moderates accept the rule of the retarded hardnut religio-warriors. get a second trip to Stockholm!
Pathological altruism comes to mind with this one.
Thank god for non-interventionist Russia keeping the U.S. from intervening. Damn that libertarian international law.
