Los Angeles Public Schools Train Students as Obamacare Missionaries

Sure, professional athletes have a certain celebrity appeal, but can they really convince Americans to embrace a product that a growing number have already written off as a shit sandwich? But to really win hearts and minds … Hey! How about using the public schools to recruit their captive audience of students to the cause, and then set the kids loose to proselytize their families on the glories of Obamacare? That should work wonders.
And it's not creepy at all.
From School Reform News:
The Los Angeles Unified School District will use a state grant to train teens to promote ObamaCare to family members. Covered California, the state's health insurance exchange, announced grants of $37 million on May 14 to promote the nationally unpopular law.
LAUSD will receive $990,000. The district listed as a primary outcome for its project, "Teens trained to be messengers to family members."
Covered California spokeswoman Sarah Soto-Taylor said staff have not questioned this goal.
"We have confidence that the model LA Unified brought to the table will be successful in reaching our target population, which includes family members of students," she said.
Well, of course "staff have not questioned this goal." That's because "LAUSD will also use tax-paid staff to promote ObamaCare through phone calls to students' homes, in-class presentations, and meetings with employees eligible for ObamaCare's taxpayer-covered healthcare."
So public school teachers get paid taxpayer dollars to preach Obamacare to their co-workers and the students, so the kids will then go home and sing the glories of the health scheme to the same taxpayers who are funding the whole process. Everybody wins!
If this experiment in using the public schools as a medium for spreading the good news works out as school officials and health insurance exchange managers hope, expect more in the future.
"Teens are part of a 'pilot' program to test whether young people can be trained as messengers to deliver outreach and limited education to family and friends in and around their homes," said Gayle Pollard-Terry, a LAUSD spokesman, in an email. "Teens will be educating adults that they already know (e.g., family or friends) and not other adults."
Well, of course teens will be indoctrinated in official messages that they'll then be expected to bring home. Why else would you send them to public schools?

Whee! You get an informant! You get an informant! Everybody gets an informant!
Like I said once on here, Obama is in the Tyson Zone. There is no low he can sink to that would surprise me.
Your mom?
announced grants of $37 million
Which is fine, considering California's massive budget surpluses.
1984 wasn't a manual!
More of a guideline.
Best Practices?
If this experiment in using the public schools as a medium for spreading the good news works out
It won't, so no worries there. This is just another sop to the teachers' unions while also promoting the administration's bullshit. In Obama terms, it's all win.
This particular example won't, but just wait. If Obamacare isn't repealed, history classes will describe it as the centerpiece legislative achievement passed by a President beleaguered by racists.
Minus the racism angle, that is how the NHS is taught about in the UK.
Oh god, what about that awful opening ceremony for the London Games. It could happen here!
Clearly the President is missing an opportunity here. I vote we rename the Department of Education to the Glorious People's Revolutionary Education Commissariat. *gag&
That better be a victory gag, Comrade Citizen.
Clearly the President is missing an opportunity here. I vote we rename the Department of Education to the Glorious People's Revolutionary Education Commissariat. *gag*
Hey! You voted twice!
Well, these kids are going to be insufferable when they pass their decade-long indoctrination curriculum after college.
Hey, remember this?
Many conservatives enraged over Obama school speech
But that was just crraaaazzzzyyyyy talk, right? The President would never press a partisan political agenda on impressionable young minds. Never!
"But that was just crraaaazzzzyyyyy talk, right?"
Not to me, it wasn't.
This isn't fundamentally different from encouraging students to engage their parents in math homework. Government mandated and funded health insurance and government mandated and funded education aren't ethically distinguishable.
Sarc, right?
Not at all. More people oppose Obamacare than oppose public education, so I expect a stronger reaction to this indoctrination. But if you think that it's ok for the government to forcibly fund, require and advocate education, then you must also think it's ok for the government to forcibly fund, require and advocate health insurance.
Uh, HE DOESN'T. Do you have any argument that makes sense?
Not sure if "HE" is Sevo or Tuccille. In either case, I never claimed he did.
So you're basically just a dumbfuck. Good to know.
Either you agree with me that Obamacare and public education are both wrong, in which case I'll forgive your poor reading comprehension, or you disagree and you're the dumbfuck.
In case it isn't obvious let's quote the 'argument':
"This isn't fundamentally different from encouraging students to engage their parents in math homework."
Now, I'm gonna presume you already see the false equivalence, but just in case:
NO! MATH HOMEWORK IS IN NO WAY EQUIVALENT TO OBOZOSCARE!
Is that clear?
Yeah, the "if you think government can do some things, you think it can do everything" argument seems unpersuasive.
government funded ideology is the issue here. Do you understand now?
He's either really stupid, or a troll. I'm leaning toward stupid.
So, I donated to a friend's campaign a few months ago through a Dem grassroots website (it was that or dig out my check book), and hoping that I wouldn't end up on every lefty mailing list in CA. My hopes have been dashed, but now we can have fun by looking at (D) strategies!
Dear Supporter,
Charles Koch--of the infamous Koch brothers--must have listened when the media called Republicans technologically obsolete after the 2012 election, because he just sponsored an event called "Liberty Hackathon - Preparing the New GOP Digital Platform."
For those of you not immersed in the tech world, hackathons are like mini-conferences for techies. There's lots of Red Bull and camaraderie and coding all night. They're where relationships are formed and big ideas dreamed up. Teams come out of the experience with a finished product that might just be able to change the world. And these events have always been incubators for talent on the left.
(Cont...)
So far the various right-wing attempts to copy our work, and the work of other Democratic groups, have mostly failed. But now Charles Koch is counting on his cash jump-starting the Republicans so they can catch up to us with events like this hackathon. We can't let that happen.
Can you chip in $5 a month, or whatever you can afford, to help us show the Kochs that they can't buy innovation?
Now that even mainstream Republicans have opened their eyes - and their wallets - to the possibilities of technology, they've actually got time to create a tech infrastructure that could help them as soon as 2014.
The Koch's money means that they can lure talented programmers from the private sector to their cause. That's not what we're about here at ActBlue.
We're a non-profit and we rely on donations from folks like you to keep our all-star tech team on staff and build infrastructure for the future. Now that the Republicans are embracing the tech world, we need to hire even more people to join the team. [emphasis theirs]
We don't have billionaire backers, we have you.
Will you help make sure we can afford the tech team that we need to stay in front of the Republicans by chipping in $5 a month or whatever you can afford?
From all of us at ActBlue, thanks.
-Julia, Patrick, Daniel, and Hannah
Blast I emphasized the wrong paragraph, move the emphasis one paragraph up.
Also, EDIT BUTTON
You can't? Somebody should tell all those venture capitalists in Silicon Valley that they're wasting their time.
ha
Someone should also tell whoever wrote that email, since they too are trying to buy innovation.
But buying innovation $5 at a time is different than buying it by the billions. Because KOCHTOPUS!!!!
they can't buy innovation
That's exactly how you get innovation. Or are they just saying "the other guys can't do it"?
The Koch's money means that they can lure talented programmers from the private sector to their cause. That's not what we're about here at ActBlue.
This whole statement confuses the shit out of me. Where are these programmers going? a Koch hackfest isn't the public sector. And what, paying for services provided is "not what [they're] about"? or is it just better when they get paid in community hugs and 5$ donations?
NO MINIMUM WAGE FOR YOUR HACKING, DO IT FOR THE LOVE OF PARTY!
Hacking is just information Communism, maaaan.......
DO IT FOR THE LOVE OF PARTY!
"You don't need to use your skills to earn a living, we'll make sure you get all the Free Shit you need. But we need your support to make sure we beat The Other Guys."
Would be fun to replace every instance of Koch brothers or similar with "Jews".
At the end, it would be hard to figure out whether we're reading Nazi or Cominterm propaganda.
Dear Party Member,
Charles Koch--of the infamous Koch brothers--must have listened when the media called the global Jewish hegemony technologically obsolete after the 2012 election, because he just sponsored an event called "Liberty Hackathon - Preparing the New Jewish Digital Platform."
For those of you not immersed in the tech world, hackathons are like mini-conferences for techies. There's lots of Red Bull and camaraderie and coding all night. They're where relationships are formed and big ideas dreamed up. Teams come out of the experience with a finished product that might just be able to change the world. And these events have always been incubators for talent on the nationalist left.
So far the various Jewish attempts to copy our work, and the work of other national socialist groups, have mostly failed. But now Charles Koch is counting on his cash jump-starting his fellow Jews so they can catch up to us with events like this hackathon. We can't let that happen.
Can you chip in 5 Reichsmarks a month, or whatever you can afford, to help us show the Jews that they can't buy innovation?
Now that even assimilated Jews have opened their eyes - and their wallets full of ill-gotten Jew-gold - to the possibilities of technology, they've actually got time to create a tech infrastructure that could help them as soon as 2014.
The Jews' money means that they can lure talented programmers from the private sector to their cause. That's not what we're about here at ActBlueshirts.
We're a non-profit and we rely on donations from true Volken like you to keep our all-star tech team on staff and build infrastructure for the future. Now that the Jews are embracing the tech world, we need to hire even more people to join the team.
We don't have billionaire backers, we have you.
Will you help make sure we can afford the tech team that we need to stay in front of the Jews by chipping in 5 Reichmarks a month or whatever you can afford?
From all of us at ActBlueshirts, thanks.
The Party is Obama. But Obama is America, just as America is Obama. Hitler! HOPE AND CHANGE! HOPE AND CHANGE! HOPE AND CHANGE!
-Julia, Patrick, Daniel, and Hannah
Definitely Nazi. Not enough bourgeois this and reactionary that for good Cominterm agitprop.
Yes. Progressives are fascists in every single definition of the word.
Dear Comrade,
Charles Koch--of the infamous Zionist-imperialist-capitalist Koch brothers--must have listened when the media called imperialists technologically obsolete after the 2012 American bourgeois "election," because he just sponsored an event called "Liberty Hackathon - Preparing the New Capitalist Digital Platform."
For those workers not immersed in the technology world, hackathons are like party conferences for industrial computing foremen. There's lots of "patriotic work" spirit and camaraderie and ceaseless heroism of labor. They're where comradely spirit reaches its apex and great feats of socialism are accomplished. Teams come out of the experience with a finished product that might just be able to unite the world under peaceful and democratic norms. And these events have always been incubators for talent on the left.
So far the various imperialist attempts to copy our work, and the work of other socialist and democratic groups, have mostly failed. But now Charles Koch is counting on his cash jump-starting the Zionist imperialists so they can catch up to us with events like this hackathon. We can't let that happen.
All ought to join the Anti-Zionism Anti-Imperialism World Socialism and Peace Movement, to help us show the Kochs that they can't buy innovation! A contribution of at least 5 rubles is required to show your solidarity.
Now that even bourgeois-"democratic" imperialists have opened their eyes - and the fruits of their capitalist exploitation - to the possibilities of technology, they've actually got time to create a tech infrastructure that could help them destroy world socialism as soon as 2014.
The Koch's money means that they can bribe traitors and spies from socialist universities to their cause. That's not what we're about here at Action of the Socialist Red Flag.
We're a non-party-youth-solidarity-organization and we rely on solidarity from comrades like you to keep our heroic technology engineers on duty and build socialist infrastructure for the future. Now that the imperialists are embracing the tech world, we need to recruit even more comrades to join our unyielding effort.
We don't have billionaire Zionist-capitalist-imperialist backers, we have you, comrade.
Will you help make sure the international worker's solidarity movement can afford the technology heroes that we need to stay in front of the imperialists by declaring your solidarity with 5 rubles?
For peace, solidarity, and socialism from all comrades at Action of the Socialist Red Flag. Salutations!
-Yulia, Pyotr, Daniel, and Anna
Very nice.
Activia!
" ill-gotten Jew-gold"
Nice touch. I laughed.
*standing ovation*
I feel an aneurysm-inducing fit of laughter coming on here...
For those of you not immersed in the tech world, hackathons are like mini-conferences for techies.........And these events have always been incubators for talent on the left.
How utterly fucking deluded do you have to be to begin a paragraph addressing your target audience with the most rudimentary explanation of something possible and ending it by pretending that they're actually the subject matter? Ladies and germs, behold the mindset of the Modern Left.
I've worked in tech for over a decade, and the only people I've ever met that espouse progressive sympathies of any sort are the useless dipshits that call themselves "technologists" and whose exposure to anything vaguely tech related involves doing shit like "curating social media." Anybody else with even a smidgen of coding skills, SQL knowledge, sysadmin, network engineering and whatnot all seemed to have convictions that pretty much squared them up with libertarians even if they didn't explicitly call themselves such. Could someone please point me to these lefty digital geniuses? I'd love to see a real life example.
Umm...I'm a Humanities/Social Science guy and even I thought of Stallman in approximately 1.5 microseconds after reading your question.
Richard Stallman is an absolute genius and a borderline kook, but I have never really thought of him as a leftist.
Green Party, dude. The Green Party.
So? That's hardly something that makes one a doctrinaire leftist; at least not in the context of this discussion.
How so? The Green Party's platform, as I understand it, is the very definition of Progressivism.
Thanks for the link to Stallman. I had probably heard his name once or twice, but that link got me into his speeches and the wiki page and I was able to edumacate myself on a very interesting person and some important concepts!
Spanx again
Stallman is and always has been a single issue activist. I have no clue what his positions on various other issues might be, because I've never heard about them. I'd suspect that his party affiliation could very likely be a marriage of convenience insofar as it's a platform from which to further his activism. If you could dig up some of his advocacy in other fields I'd love to read about it, but at the moment I see him as being a real progressive than I believe Wayne Allen Root to be a real libertarian.
Shit. Meant no more than I believe Wayne Allen Root to be a real libertarian.
Stallman is fairly lefty, and I'd suggest some of the GPL3 is anti-liberty (although for purposes of avoiding patents).
In the free software world, though, we do have a gun toting LP'er: ESR
From what I read of his speeches, and I learned a lot - very enlightening, I think Stallman makes a good case for the problems with software patents (vs. copyrights which are ok by him to an extent).
"Borderline kook"? That's generous of you. "During a lecture Q&A session Richard Stallman appears to pick something off his foot or toe, places it in his mouth and chews on it."
Well he passes the cave troll computer nerd purity test, though I haven't seen his plastic anime doll collection.
A friend I've known since we were both in elementary school ran for legislative office last year, but I wasn't about to donate: I wouldn't want to end up on such lists.
He knows I'm a crazy libertarian, anyways.
Awww you're not crazy, you're special!
Eh, I'd rather have a Democrat legislator in CA Assembly who has a serious bug up his ass about pension reform thant a Democrat legislator in the CA assembly who thinks the status quo is just dandy. This friend and I disagree on a lot but we agree on enough things that I think he'd be better (in CA) than the other options.
Friend of mine just retired from his FF job after 25 yrs. He is collecting a very generous pension with sick-ass benefits and is now working for another fire department, so collecting a salary as a firefighter as well as the very generous bennies as a retiree.
Even he admits that the pension benefits are a "bit overgenerous" (his words). Don't get me wrong, he's a hero ( he made the paper several times for truly heroic acts in the line of duty and he's the type of guy who would and did absolutely risk his safety to save others) and he deserves A pension, but the california ff pension system is pretty bloated.
My friend's campaign ads all seemed to be straight Team Blue boilerplate. Of course, the other guy's campaign ads were all straight Northeast Team Red boilerplate.
So, I donated to a friend's campaign a few months ago
Pussy. I don't even donate to my brother's campaign, and I love him. Of course, he doesn't ask, because he knows better.
This is creepy as hell. And I'm not one to find shit creepy unless it's CREEPY.
How about teachers do their job-readin', writin', 'rithmetic.I nowhere see pimping obamacare in their job description. Also,as a matter of conscience, what about those teachers that are against obamacare and are basically forced into pimping a program they don't support?
"I've worked in tech for over a decade, and the only people I've ever met that espouse progressive sympathies of any sort are the useless dipshits that call themselves "technologists" and whose exposure to anything vaguely tech related involves doing shit like "curating social media."Anybody else with even a smidgen of coding skills, SQL knowledge, sysadmin, network engineering and whatnot all seemed to have convictions that pretty much squared them up with libertarians even if they didn't explicitly call themselves such"
This matches my experience with true techies. They are not of the abolish the dept of education, abolish (insert federal govt.program here) libertarian ilk (iow they would probably not pass most reasonoid litmus tests, but they are definitely of the govt.is too often the problem not the solution, live and let live, laissez faire libertarian ilk and are sympatico to many of the libertarian causes and skeptical of statism - iow get the govt. out of people's bloodstreams(at least as far as minor shit like mj),bedrooms, support gaymarriage.
I would describe them as libertarians with a social safety net.
There must be a Federal Banana Hammock!
extra small trial sized.
It's not creepy. It's just retarded.
Who takes advice from teenagers? Idiots? Well congratulations, because they're already on board.
This can't be real. I refuse to click links. This is fucked up on a scale that words can't describe. Someone got trolled.
We did. Once in 2008 and then again in 2012.
fwiw, THIS is the kind of shit that you would hope teachers' unions exist to FIGHT - hey you aren't going to use our members as official propagandists for your health care (lol) program. We're teachers, jim, not health care pimps.
I remain skeptical the teachers' unions will take the anti-position, but after all hope IS the thing with feathers.
Teachers unions have consistently fought performance measures - merit pay, subject matter testing for teachers, etc. Let's see where they come out on this subject. Methinx they will be just fine with their masters forcing them to pimp obamacare to their minions^H^H^H^Hstudents. Which is totally messed up. I'm not against teachers having political opinions and even espousing them in class. Presumably kids will be exposed to different political opinions from different teachers and their autonomy to make up their own mind will be respected... in a perfect world... or at least a private school , like I attended.
Using teachers as official policy supporters, especially for a policy wholly unrelated to teaching is just wrong.
As somebody who attended mOSTLY private schools, I saw firsthand the superiority of private schools (religious ones fwiw - quaker and episcopalian... quakers may be silly pacifists but they know how to edumacate kids. Just ask the Obamas after all. They send theirs to Sidwell FRIENDS, a Quaker school), and I really was exposed to teachers with a variety of political opinions. Sure, they were mostly leaning liberals - as quakers tend to, although I saw a fair share of libertarianism amongst some teachers which was pretty cool.
My track coach, and the Latin teacher as well was definitely a libertarian, and a man with a PhD (in a real subject ) something you rarely see amongst high school teachers in a public school. Guy was frankly wicked smaht and you learned shit just by being in proximity to him. He would never have survived the regimentation, the "teachers credential" bullshit of public school mediocrity. Phd in the classics? Fluent in Latin (as far as anybody can be fluent in a dead language), Italian, Spanish, knowledgeable in ancient literature and a damn good track coach to boot? Yea, but he didn't have a TEACHER's CERTIFICATE!!!!!
The New American Nazi Youth. Brought to you by Barack H Obama.
"test whether young people can be trained as messengers to deliver outreach and limited education to family and friends"
If you *must* do this -- How about testing whether young people can deliver limited education in, say, *reading fundamentals* rather than in effing DemocratCare? 8-(
I can write in cursive, but I can't read it afterwards.... Well, maybe I can't write in cursive either, and had to have a "friend" do it for me...
/Some 19 year old soon to be senior in HS.
What happened to AmeriCorps and Acorn? Can't they get them to deliver the mail and do a little yard work while their on their walkabout? Too bad about separation of church and state, they could've gotten the Jehovah's Witnesses to sign people up. I'm excited, it's like the Census all over again.
Umm, I think the Teathuglicans hulk-smashed acorn into non-existence.
ACORN is gone in name only. Like slime, they split up into a bunch of smaller renamed groups, many still at the same addresses as the various old ACORN headquarters, all still doing the same crap they've been doing all along.
This is the kind of stuff they'll be fighting for in a few years when they hand them a rifle.
That barbaric money...
Now remember kids, if you ever hear your parents say anything negative about the glorious healthcare liberation movement, tell a teacher right away. Your mom and dad may need to come in for some more intensive education on the subject. It's for their own good.
They told me that if I voted for Romney that schoolchildren would be forced into creepy religious indoctrination. And they were right!
The next time some liberal fuck mentions how public schools need more money and how teachers are underpaid I'm going to rub their nose in this so hard they will be smelling Obama's ass for weeks.
Ok.
"Obamacare is here to stay and universal healthcare is coming so we should accept it and move on."
Did they put a gold star on your report card?
Whatever brings on hyperinflation and the total collapse of civilization the fastest.
I think I heard this argument before, it was "better Red than dead" back in the day.
I'm curious about the direction you're heading, go on.
Which is different from hyperper inflation.
Zimbabwe?
My fellow lemmings, I implore you - TO THE CLIFFS!
