The unfolding story of the National Security Agency's surveillance program has catapulted privacy rights back into public discussion, as well as sales of the classic 1949 dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. The book had jumped in sales 292% as of 6:30p.m. ET Tuesday, making Amazon's "Movers and Shakers" list and ranking no. 209 versus no. 821 a day ago.

Really? Sales of the classic 1949 dystopian novel? Time apparently employees nothing but historical illiterates anymore.

While 1984 was published in 1949, it's pretty common knowledge that it was written in 1948 and the author transposed the digits to come up with the title , 1984. However, the ignorant fact checker probably had no clue and just googled the published date. Sigh. We're heading toward Idiocracy.

Don't be your own idiot. Do you insist he only began thinking about the book in 1948? Even if he only began putting the final version of the words on paper in 1948, you either have to go by the publication date or qualify a book with multiple years.
