Toy guns, and even food in the basic shape of a gun, have thrown school administrators into fits. So the latest move by an elementary school in California shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

From CBS San Francisco:

A different-kind of gun buyback was held in Hayward on Saturday as some school children were given the chance to trade in their toy guns for a prize.

The buyback, held at Strobridge Elementary School, offered books to kids who turned in their fake weapons. Principal Charles Hill held the buyback as a lesson for children who may see guns as part of everyday life.

"As they get older, it becomes just a natural thing," Hill told KPIX 5. "If they have a real gun in their hand, they'll pull the trigger just as quick. I mean, they don't fear it."

A gun safety class would be far more useful, and less asinine.

The BAN BONER crowd is not interested in safety no matter how much they lie about it. If they were, gun safety classes would be everywhere in schools. They are interested in getting as many people as possible to fear guns to make banning them easier.

Actions speak far louder than words, and vehemently opposing gun safety training for children speaks loudest of all.

Well, it's not as though students must go through some sort of driver safety course before they can get their license... oh, they do that too, huh?

My college had a swimming proficiency requirement to receive a degree. No, I don't know the history of that. It did give me the idea of forming a list of things I think my children should be able to do by adulthood. For some reason my friends can't get over start a fire three ways. What's so tough about a match, a lighter, and a 9v battery and 000 steel wool? (Or whatever three methods they choose?)

They are very obviously (and nationally, all over the country in supposedly local school districts) trying to push a partisan political agenda by brainwashing children.

Democrats are pushing for gun control at a national level and suddenly local schools all over the country are suspending students over gun shaped pop-tarts?

The whole point of this is any mention, any thought of "gun" = bad stimulus. Pavlovian. It doesn't have to make sense, just that whenever someone mentioned the word 'gun' it has to be associated with a bad response.

This whole "gun free upbringing" idea really amuses me.

My mother was so totally anti-gun that I was not even allowed to watch "Mission Impossible" or similar violent TV programs.

The result - I became fascinated with guns, enlisted into the Marines the day after I turned 17, and got a degree in Mechanical Engineering partly to better understand firearms design. I now have a world class personal armory and have been referred to by other gun owners as being a "walking firearms encyclopedia".
