Former Pot Smoker Mayor Bloomberg Calls Medical Marijuana a "Hoax," Opposes Recreational Legalization

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has added another item to his list of substances he would like no one to enjoy, ever: marijuana. Bloomberg made his case against medical and recreational pot this morning on the John Gambling radio show:
"Yeah, right, medical, come on," said Bloomberg. "There's no medical. This is one of the great hoaxes of all times."
The mayor has admitted to smoking weed in the past, and enjoying it, but that was a long time ago.
"The bottom line is, I'm told marijuana is much stronger today than it was 20 or 30 years ago," [Bloomberg said].
Bloomberg's opposition to medical and recreational marijuana is two-fold: first, his belief that the drug is stronger now.
"And number two, drug dealers have families to feed," he said. "If they can't sell marijuana, they'll sell something else. And the something else is gonna be worse. And, the push to legalize this is just wrongheaded."
"If you think about it, they say, 'Oh well it's not gonna hurt anybody, it doesn't lead to dependency,'" he continued. "Of course it does. You can argue about recreational things, but it's a very slippery path."
Last year, in Bloomberg's New York, the NYPD stopped 26,000 people for marijuana, and arrested 5,000 of them. It's fair to say that Mayor Bloomberg's "personal army" negatively affected far more lives in far more serious ways than are affected by consuming even today's strong marijuana.
Hell, even "third way" (read: prohibition lite) advocates are concerned with arresting people. Meanwhile, Mayor Bloomberg is arguing that drug dealers (read: the mostly black and hispanic people who are arrested by the NYPD under stop and frisk) have families to feed, so let's lock them up for selling pot rather lock them up for selling something stronger.
That kind of cynicism--whether staged or honest--is terrifying.

And yet New Yorkers elected this guy THREE fucking times.
I don't get it.
I've heard comments to the effect that the other candidates were worse. He seems determined to make that very hard to believe.
Which further proves Buckley's point about rather being ruled by the first 100 names in the Cambridge phone book than the Faculty of Harvard.
There are garbage men in New York who could run the city better than the ones currently in charge.
Looks like Weiner might stick it to him this erection.
He certainly mounting a stiff challenge for Gracie Mansion.
Weiner will probably pull out because his policies are too soft.
I dunno. He's up in the polls. And rumor has it that he's an arousing debater.
One might even say a master debater.
some guy wins.
+1
But, which one?
My mother is a master gardener and my father is a fisherman. I guess that makes me a master baiter.
At least there won't be any infantile penis jokes if he runs.
Infantile? Come on! Some of those take a lot of thought!
Hey! His penis is way bigger than a baby's!
Bloomberg deserves it from behind. In a city-wide gang-bang.
I thought liberals were FOR legalization?
Sex, drugs, Rock n Roll? Make love not war? Fuck the pigs? God made grass, man made booze, who do you trust?
Liberals are. Progressives are not. Bloomie hasn't a liberal bone in his body.
And the rent is still too damn high.
I'd vote for that guy.
Why does Reason give a fuck?
Why do they give a fuck what the mayor of the world's largest city says about a central libertarian issue?
NY is not "the world's largest city", dude.
Okay, the nation's largest city.
I thought LA had surpassed it. *googling now*
Whoops. Nope. I just failed geology.

Welcome to Hit & Run.
Don't get me killed, new guy.
Say hello to Mary.
NYC is however the world's leading Global City.
What does the mayor of the world's largest city say on a central libertarian issue? I mean, now that we know what the mayor of a middling-sized city says?
NY is not the world's largest city.
True enough. NYC is merely the nation's most populous city. So there's no reason at all to give a shit what he says about a central libertarian issue.
This is interesting (to me, anyway) not only is NYC the US's largest city, it has always been so since the country was founded.
Don't believe Bloomberg's lies.
In other words, anything he says.
The world's largest city, New York is not.
Just so you're clear, Hugh, New York, the largest city, it is not.
are you 100% sure about that?
I'm not 100% sure of anything.
I am 100% sure that we need to give Skerritt props for being so Tulpical.
People get...props?...for being Tulpical?
The only props I'd give any of them is the prop of a plane to the head.
Nobody is born that obtuse, nicole. It takes years of dedicated self-delusion to become so thoroughly convinced of your own rightness that you will seize on trivial misstatements rather than admit to posting something retarded. We should recognize that kind of commitment when we see it.
Be careful, Tulpa has a new friend. There was someone posting as... I dunno, K PAX or some such name (I ain't looking it up) who was like Tulpa's long lost twin.
I have a hard time with the idea that anyone would ever be Tulpa's friend.
I have a hard time with the idea that anyone would ever be Tulpa's friend.
Person: A priest and a Rabbi walk into a bar.
Tulpa: Uhm, point of order, they were strolling.
PB: BUSH DID IT FIRST! HE WAS ALREADY AT THE BAR WHEN THEY ARRIVED!
Someone needs a good SWATting.
"And number two, drug dealers have families to feed," he said. "If they can't sell marijuana, they'll sell something else. And the something else is gonna be worse. And, the push to legalize this is just wrongheaded."
By that logic, if we would just criminalize something harmless, drug dealers could feed their families by selling that instead. Hence the push to criminalize that would be rightheaded.
His push to ban Big Gulps makes a strange kind of sense.
Exactly. It's all coming together. They can stop selling heroin and crystal and go into the business of pushing twinkies and large sugary drinks.
This man is a genius. ElBloombito 2016!
There is that old joke about some day getting rich running the underground steak and fois gras joint in New York City. That apparently is Nanny Bloomburg's economic development plan.
Good one. Like anyone making mid six figures or higher has to be concerned that Bloomies rules apply to him. Progs make rules for the little people to live by. Because, they are ants, John.
"And number two, drug dealers have families to feed," he said. "If they can't sell marijuana, they'll sell something else. And the something else is gonna be worse. And, the push to legalize this is just wrongheaded."
that might be the most insane thing ever uttered by a politician in America. Wow. He has really lost his mind.
It's bordering on insane troll logic, if not occupying it outright.
It is something a troll would write on a pro legalization board. He he meant it.
and here I thought it was the customers taht determined the market, not the dealers...
If he ever had one.
But he's fine with AGW.
But the opinion of a bunch of people say that AGW is real. Whereas the only thing that says MJ is safe is stupid science and facts.
Please, FdA, stop trying to confuse nanny bloomberg with things like facts. You have to use your FEELINGS to tell you what is real and what can be dismissed. And you obviously don't have a soul if you aren't horrified by the raping of mother gaia.
Or you know, they might just continue selling the now legal marijuana, without worrying about the possibility of going to jail. After all, they do know the market.
And this statement was made by a successful businessman.
The low level dealers make shit anyway, they're just waiting around hoping the people above them die or go to jail so they can move up the ladder and start making real money.
Anyone who currently makes all their money selling marijuana would find that their attempts to move into the market for harder drugs would be met with considerable resistance from the gangs that currently occupy that market.
Oh Zod, not that! The only thing worse than an illegal drug dealer is a successful businessman.
/Bloombers
Or Slurpees.
Looks like Bloomie fails to understand that if you want less hard drug use, the easiest thing to do is to close the largest gateway to the black market. It's not like the guy behind the counter at the liquor store is likely to refer you to a cocaine or heroin dealer, but there's a chance that a marijuana dealer will. Legalize the weed and hard drugs will become very difficult to find.
Maybe, but hopefully not. There are NYPD officers protecting the dealers.
Jesus, WTF. And here I thought I wasn't going to see anything more ignorant today...
Yeah, the specialty breeds are a bit stronger, but regs are pretty much the same as they have been for much longer than 30 years. NEXT
What a mendacious cunt. FUCK.
When's the last time you heard a story about someone ODing on THC... that's right. Never. And to quote Bob Saget "you ever sucked cock for weed? I didn't think so" THC is nice, it's fun, it's not addictive. There's no such thing as THC withdrawal.
You're a fucking moron, Bloomie. As is anyone who puts any faith in anything you utter. Fuck off.
He belongs in prison. Drug War Crimes.
Is there a single issue Bloomberg is not a complete fucking tool about?
No. He is not just a tool. He is nuts. No sane person would ever say something as crazy as the "drug dealers gotta sell something so it might as well be pot" remark.
No sane person with a billion dollars would want to be a mayor. That right there is a giant flag - this is some kind of control freak.
I'm usually right there with you on Hanlon's Razor, but this guy is too consistent for it to be craziness or incompetence. I'm fairly certain that he really is just so egomaniacal and self important that he truly believes that he is just, fair, and "rightheaded"
He's a slaver through and through.
he really is just so egomaniacal and self important that he truly believes that he is just, fair, and "rightheaded"
I think we are on the same page. I would just call someone fitting that description insane.
Ah, fair enough. I don't think the effects of living in an echo chamber and believing you are ultimately righteous are necessarily a mental illness.
I just prefer the term "mendacious cunt"
I'm saddened by the decay of the word cunt into something vile and pernicious. I love cunts, I love their warmth, their smell, their taste...
I much prefer terms like dungheap and excrement for these sorts of fools. Cunts are a beautiful thing, man!
In the literal sense, yes. But it's one of the only words that still evokes a strong response from most people anymore. Even "fuck" has lost a lot of its effect.
I remember hearing about some law regarding employment on the news and was surprised that he came down on the right side of that one. I can't remember the specifics. That's all I have.
He does own a big company. Don't want inconvenient laws applying to him.
He deserves the double-pointed Lord of the Flies treatment.
Sorry but Irvin Rosenfeld get his Medical Marijuana Medicine from the Federal Government and has for 30 years to treat his Multiple Congenital Cartilaginous Exostoses. The National Nurses Association is trained on how to administer Medical Marijuana. C @ N N @ B I S is medicine, say the doctors and the Federal Government in the medical field. Mr. Bloomberg, you are uninformed.
Meanwhile, Mayor Bloomberg is arguing that drug dealers (read: the mostly black and hispanic people who are arrested by the NYPD under stop and frisk) have families to feed, so let's lock them up for selling pot rather lock them up for selling something stronger.
Why don't they just join the union and become electricians?
Or become hedge fund managers?
"The bottom line is, I'm told marijuana is much stronger today than it was 20 or 30 years ago," [Bloomberg said].
My chauffeur's butler tells me that a bank is where people who haven't properly invested it keep their money. So robbing a bank is tantamount to the worst crime: stealing money!
stand back, I gotta practice my stabbin'! kuh kahh!
MJ may be stronger, but the dollar isn't. Given what money is worth these days, robbing a bank is stupid. You can't carry out enough cash to make it worthwhile.
When the pot is stronger, you can get high on less of it, so it is better as far as your lings are concerned.
But then you might OD if you accidentally smoke the same amount as the weak stuff. (not my actual thoughts, but one that I heard recently)
And you might OD if you drink the same amount of Scotch as you would normally drink beer. Legal weed's potency would be on the label so a user would know how much to smoke and avoid a relatively harmless, yet uncomfortable couple of hours after smoking too much.
"And number two, drug dealers have families to feed," he said. "If they can't sell marijuana, they'll sell something else. And the something else is gonna be worse. And, the push to legalize this is just wrongheaded."
Yeah, because making something legal makes it harder to sell, or is it that it makes it less profitable? Either way let's make selling IPods and IPhones illegal so that Apple employees will be able to feed their families.
A friend had a serious asthma attack. After a week in hospital she could walk again and walked to my place around the corner. We shared a puff and she went back to hospital and had her afternoon lung test. The chatty nurses went quiet and looked at each other. Her lung capacity had doubled since her morning test. 2 nurses left the room and the remaining nurse said out loud "Officially it doesn't help". Then he leaned toward her and said quietly "but unofficially it does".
Another friend with very serious back pain managed to get some buds of much higher quality than he had scored in years. He said it gave him the first full nights sleep he had had in as many years.
A close friend died of Lymphoma. I would take her little bits. She told me it helped her "put the pain to one side". Once she was bedridden I could no longer give her anymore. Her last words were "more morphine".
To deny people their medicine in time of great need is no different to beating someone with a stick or holding them under water. It is torture and murder on a mass scale that happens as the result of wide spread harassment and persecution of groups in the community. That means that prohibition is a "Crime Against Humanity"and the people responsible know exactly what they have done.
We must do all we can to end the drug war as soon as possible and when it is over we must not fail to put the criminals responsible on trial.
Former Pot Smoker Mayor Bloomberg Calls Medical Marijuana a "Hoax," Opposes Recreational Legalization
I call it a hoax too. It is not legalization, it is regulation in another manner. Overton Window freaks, look to Colorado about which way that thing works for real. You people keep trying to woo "lawmakers" with public opinion when oftentimes, public opinion is all you need. Then again, public opinion is not what rights are made of.
Fuck you Bloomberg.
I wouldn't vote for you for dogcatcher you PIECE OF SHIT HYPOCRITE.
I wish you a slow and painful death.
