Ry Cooder Seeks 'Destruction' of Koch Brothers
The labor/left/journalism axis has been continuing its agitation this week against a totally-rumored-at-this-point sale of the Tribune Co., which owns eight newspapers including the L.A. Times, to the libertarian businessmen/philanthropists and all-purpose right-wing bogeymen Charles and David Koch (the latter of whom sits on the Reason Foundation's Board of Trustees). Guest starring at one L.A. rally this week was none other than slide-guitar hero, Cuban-music anthropologist, and Reed College washout Ry Cooder. The LA Weekly sets the scene:
And then came Ry Cooder.
The roots musician and Santa Monica native opened by waving to the building that houses Oaktree [Capital Management, which owns a reported 23 percent of Tribune]. "I just want to say hello to Dave and Charlie," he called. "Here's to your destruction."
The song he sang was an old union song, "I Don't Want Your Millions, Mister" complete with Koch-inspired lyrics.
You may find it odd that an aging musician would be so energized in opposition to a newspaper-company sale, but it turns out that Cooder has an actual mini-discography devoted to the Kochs. Here, for example, is a ditty called "Brother Is Gone," in which Charlie and David meet Satan by the side of the road in Wichita, Kansas:
Read the lyrics here, including this strained stanza:
Oil spills and cancer towns was our steppin' stones
Immigration bills and foreclosure homes
States' rights we proclaimed like in the good old Jim Crow days
Our highest aim was to take your vote away
Who has the heart to tell Cooder that the Kochs—unlike the L.A. Times editorial board—are totally on his side regarding eminent domain abuse?

Moral Panics.
If someone invented a retrovirus that destroyed the human capacity for moral panics without changing anything else, they would have done more for humanity than even Norman Borlaug.
Anybody ever read The Man Who Fed the World. I've been wanting to read it; is it any good?
But Emmanuel Goldstein is the source of all our problems!
While I applaud their desire to counter the leftist slant of the media, I question the investment savvy of the Koch Brothers in trying to get involved with newspapers in 2013. It's like buying a buggy whip factory in 1912.
Chris,
You might be right, but betting against those guys is like betting against Buffett.
You know what would be amusing? The Kochs indicate they want to buy the papers, panicked liberals bid up the price, win, and get stuck with a dying business.
People don't read newspapers anymore, but the LAT could increase their readership by doing away with the dishonest, leftist propaganda that has plagued that joint for years.
Michael Hiltik and the two Davids (Lazarus and Horsey) are self explanatory. But even their sports and entertainment writing is steeped in left wing bias. One of the writers was giddy another white guy wouldn't win American Idol this season.
LAT is what liberals think Fox news is. Buy the paper, accept the resignation of the Obama supporters, and bring in some new blood. Clean house.
The Kochs, like all libertarianists, have terrible public relations machines.
The second you suggest, out loud, that maybe, just maybe, sticking a gun in someone's ribs might not be the best way to run the world, that's the second no public relations machine in existence can bring you back from the pit of moronic public ire.
As for Ry Cooder, somehow I always think of Cooter from the Dukes of Hazzard whenever I see his name. Sad, I know.
When I think of Ry Cooder, I think of great soundtracks like Southern Comfort, The Long Riders or Paris, Texas. I used to think it was because of his soulful guitar and eclectic knowledge of musical styles. Now I think it's equally because he wasn't asked for lyrics.
"Just me and brother Dave by my side
It was in the prairie town of Wichita
We shook hands with Satan on a deal that night
...Our highest aim was to take your vote away"
Really? That's why they sold their souls? Women, power, fame? No, the Koch's want to deprive you of voting.
They're like Captain Planet villains.
Making profits is simply incidental. Some Kochs just want to watch the world burn.
Dr. Blight was not appropriate for a children's show.
I don't get it. Is it the Kochs' money that makes them ever, or something?
Yes. Or no. I don't really know what this is supposed to be. Are you having a stroke? Do you need a for-profit ambulance?
A poor attempt at Engrish, it seems.
People need good ambulance service and for profit ambulance companies do a better job.
*"evil"
Don't turds realize that segregation, Jim Crow, etc were Democratic Party initiatives? I mean seriously. Where is the outrage for Soros fronts?
And that they were infringements on individual property rights, which are superior to states' powers in the libertarian scheme of things.
You may find it odd that an aging musician would be so energized in opposition to a newspaper-company sale, but it turns out that Cooder has an actual mini-discography devoted to the Kochs.
So Cooder:Kochs::Mary Stack:HitnRun?
Yeah, except Cooder is prettier.
The Kochs set the silly moonbats off like Soros sets the wingnuts off.
(yes, I have said it before)
Wingnuts need to eat, too.
Shriek, let me direct you to the department of "I Don't Give a Fuck What You Think."
Nowhere near the same level.
Shut up, Jew! Give me your fucking property! I'm late for a funding meeting for Occupy Wall Street
STRAWMAN, THE ALBUM BY RY COODER, NOW ON SALE AT TARGET
They Killed My Cooder!
The lefty version of Ted Nugent?
I think The Motor City Madman sounds a lot more fun.
Yeah, these old leftist basically sit around complaining all day then write shitty songs about it.
Yes, the Kochs, and other entrepreneurs, like to "force" their beliefs on other people. They target the weak-minded and the willing. The difference between them and the government is that the government not only targets those groups, but also those that don't like a gun pointed at their heads.
No way. I would rather be chained in a room and forced to listen to Napalm Death and Discordance Axis for a thousand years than subject myself to two minutes of union folk music.
It's SO EARNEST. Nothing is less enjoyable and less entertaining than earnestness. Except for sincerity.
Maybe gentle humor is even worse. Good thing we chased most of those people off H&R years ago. Haha squirrels! Haha tophats and monocles! Lol jk 😉
Shut up, moron.
Warty, fucken-A. Insufferable garbage. I cheer on companies that tell unions to fuck off or better yet, close up and leave. I've had my own run-ins with those pieces of shits as a property and business owners. One notch below the mob if you ask me.
Unions do more damage to progress and ideas than the Koch brothers could ever do.
Owner.
The video with the people as bubbles poked by syringes is from a video by Cato scholar Johann Norberg on how the Fed is fueling another speculation bubble.
I spoke too soon.
Brink Lindsey is still a "Senior Fellow" at the Cato Institute and has a piece on their website.
I'm glad to see Cooder doesn't let facts get in the way of a good narrative.
Folk singer makes ridiculous claims about people whose political opinions he doesn't understand. How is this news? It's pretty much true of all folk singers.
Because he has views the chattering classes like.
If I were a bazillionaire, I'd have so much fun pulling the statists' chains. "Sulphurbottom Inc. Makes Offer to Buy Up Sidewalks of Troubled Ohio Town"
Hahahha. That video is hilarious. Towards the end, they start having clips of the 'Koch echo chamber' which apparently includes everyone working for Cato, Heritage, Reason, Fox News, The Mercatus Center, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Paul Ryan, Michelle Bachman and George Bush.
The Kochs sure bought an awful lot of influence considering that they spend 1/10 as much as the Tides Foundation.
I wonder if they're Freemasons?
+1 Secret Handshake
The Prince of Tides has a foundation now?
It's a shame because I really liked that documentary Buena Vista Social Club. I own a few of Cooder's albums and it's disheartening to see he's no different than your run of the mill statist-liberal. Like Mellencamp and Springsteen. Great music that evoke powerful imagery but shit me, tired political views.
I don't even know if Guthrie's depression era music still apply anymore.
Heard ZZ Top on Stern yesterday. Awesome stuff. They exhibited more intelligence than leftist musicians. When asked about their political leanings they simply pointed out their musicians eliciting Stern to say "why would you want to alienate a part of your fan base, right?"
Quoted for fucking truth.
Goddamn right. This reminds me of when someone asked Elvis about his opinions on Vietnam and he said 'I'm just a musician, ma'am.' I'm not particularly an Elvis fan, but you have to respect for someone who understands that people pay them for entertainment, not for politics.
"Do what's right for you, as long as it don't hurt no one."
? Elvis Presley

A lot of anti-GMO people are gonna starve to death if they take that shit too seriously.
Sounds like one heck of a plan to me dude.

I'm going to start calling this guy Cunter. Is that cool, or do I have to get approval from some nut-stomping committee?
