    2. A Serious Man   12 years ago

Pliny the Elder, Josephus, and Tacitus all mention Christian persecution.

And from the comments page some reviewer noted this passage:

"When Christians appeared in Roman courtrooms, they were not tried as heretics, blasphemers, or even fools. Christians had a reputation for being socially reclusive, refusing to join the military, and refusing to swear oaths. Once in the courtroom Christians said things that sounded like sedition. They were rude, subversive, and disrespectful. Most important, they were threatening. Even if the actions of the Romans still seem unjust, we must admit that they had reasons for treating Christians the way they did. The fact that religion and politics were so intimately blended with one another means that it is difficult to parse the motivations of Roman administrators as either religious or political. But from a Roman perspective and from the perspective of members of most ancient religious groups and political organizations, the Romans had the moral high ground. They were protecting the Empire from the wrath of the gods and its effects. That Christians were executed should not surprise us, this is a world in which people paid the "ultimate price" for seemingly small offenses."

So I guess they had it coming, am I right?

      1. Irish   12 years ago

They were rude, subversive, and disrespectful.

All of which are clearly deserving of the death penalty.

      2. Anonymous Coward   12 years ago

Even if the actions of the Romans still seem unjust, we must admit that they had reasons for treating Christians the way they did.

Government is always righteous and pure. It's your for appearing to be reclusive and suspicious. Why do you make the government beat you? WHY?!

        1. C. Anacreon   12 years ago

I seem to remember the Nazis claiming that the Jews were trying to foster communism in Germany, and therefore they had total justification for trying to kill them all off. No doubt some of them were rude and disrespectful as well. Just like the Romans and the Christians, we must admit they had reasons for treating Jews the way they did.

      3. Restoras   12 years ago

        2. T   12 years ago

No, we're not threatening. Threatening, as opposed to the first three, is actionable. And we all learned our lesson about actionable, didn't we, Warty?

          1. Warty   12 years ago

I don't know what you're talking about. Also, nothing I said was actionable.

      4. Tonio   12 years ago

    3. Killazontherun   12 years ago

Moss urges modern Christians to abandon the conspiratorial assumption that the world is out to get Christians and, rather, embrace the consolation, moral instruction, and spiritual guidance that these martyrdom stories provide.

Bleh. Wrapped in a pretty little condescending bow. I'd like to see the evidence and the argument she presents, but this modern hippie crap irks me. Either Christianity is true in its elemental claims, and the Gospel makes clear martyrdom served the cause of Christ, or it is absolutely worthless. Finding a middle ground based on vague spirituality turns your brain into tripe.

      1. C. Anacreon   12 years ago

Not unlike my college philosophy of religion class, which kept insisting we should focus on the words of Jesus, and ignore the "clearly impossible" things like walking on water, loaves and fishes and, of course, the resurrection. After all, it's just the ideas of yet another philosopher, not like he's some god or something. Our prof kept arguing that people were "missing the point" by thinking of the miracles and eternal life.

Honestly, this has the stench to me of just another faux sophisticate palming off the spin that's going to make non-believers and liberal Christians feel good about themselves (for being soooo much more sophisticated than the evangelicals and Catholics).
The truth seems to be that, yes, there were Christian martyrs. Moss even seems to acknowledge that when you get through the spin. She just seems content to say "they had it coming".

    6. Eduard van Haalen   12 years ago

"The tedium of repeated d?j? vu in this sad little volume did at least send me back to Gibbon's Decline and Fall. It is as if a publisher came to [author] Candida Moss...with a proposal for a quick buck, relying on the political twitter of the times: "You're an expert: Reframe Gibbon's notorious chapter on the Romans and the Christians with some contemporary scholarship and cultural fillips, and we can put out a nifty pamphlet that'll sell.""

Mark Steyn has an awesome article on Michael Bloomberg.

Bloomberg has spent more time in European capitals than any New York mayor since Gentleman Jimmy Walker, who in fairness only fled to Paris with his showgirl to escape criminal prosecution. So, when the Big Apple volunteers to spend a dozen years under a colorless antiseptic zillionaire with whiny, hectoring, faux-patrician Boston vowels who weekends in Bermuda and jets back to his nanny state on Monday morning to declare it illegal to put more than three sugars in your coffee, either the city's self-mythologizing has always been a total crock or something is shifting in the American psyche...The party system, as he sees it, deprived America of a Bloomberg presidency. All the smart people wanted him to run: The now defunct Newsweek ran a cover story on him, headlined with a straight-face "How a Mike Bloomberg Presidential Run Could Remake 2008." But parties mean primaries, and primaries mean you have to go to New Hampshire and Iowa and South Carolina and pretend to the rubes that you like guns and God more than the 15 other guys on the ticket. So no President Bloomberg.

    1. Tulpa (LAOL-VA)   12 years ago

Thing is, I don't see how NYC should be any more receptive to his nannying than NH or SC. New Yorkers are supposed to know how to party.

Why is George Michael still in college? Yeah, I know the character is two years younger than Michael Cera in actuality, but even still, it would mean George Michael is in his 5th year of college.

    1. Some call me Tim?   12 years ago

yeah, 24 doesn't really work as a half season show since the whole gimmick premises is based upon a 24 day.

    2. C. Anacreon   12 years ago

Sounds like they will do 24 hours over 12 hours of broadcast time. Maybe they can actually have Jack travel completely across LA in a sedan during rush hour during the missing time, instead of the 8 minutes that used to take him in the original series.

    3. Caleb Turberville   12 years ago

My biggest problem with how 24 was originally done, in addition to the recycled plot devises (i.e., invoking the twenty-something amendment), were the episodes in which nothing really seemed to have been accomplished.

Later seasons (6-8) really struggled with this, but even early episodes were plagued by the unintended consequences of the 24-hour gimmick. The utterly ridiculous Kim Bauer subplots of seasons 1 and 2 come to mind.

Isn't prom just a fun dance that hardworking students deserve?

To answer your ridiculous compound question, no.

Prom is a cultural report card of sorts on how well, or not, young women are doing.

      *facepalm*

When I went to prom in the early 1990s, I seesawed between my wish to get asked by the right guy and ride in the cool kids' limousine with the burgeoning realization that I was gay. I had a fun night, but I was far from my authentic, assertive self that night. Prom felt mostly like a job I had to do to maintain my position in the social hierarchy.

Well GRANDMA, I don't care how flippin' gay you are or about your foolish adherence to the meaningless social hierarchy of high school.

      We done here?

      1. tarran   12 years ago

Wow! Oddly enough, recognizing all the warning signs that I wasn't going to have any fun (and blow lots of money to not have fun) with the breathless announcements relating to my high-school prom, I OPTED OUT, and took a girl out on a date instead.

We saw Charles Grodin in 'Charlie's Aunt' on VHS while cuddling on a couch.

And I had a very good time.

I guess this poor dear wasn't actualized enough to dare to other her classmates.

      2. Kaptious Kristen   12 years ago

I asked dudes to both of my proms, and had a great time at the one I went to - just us and one other couple. It ended with a bonfire on the beach (sorry - no BJs. Didn't do that til college).

The only issue was the all-day orchestra rehearsal the following day. That was a bitch.

      3. Brett L   12 years ago

What? No. We used it as an excuse to go on a parentally funded overnight date and buy enough alcohol to last us through the end of our senior year. We were too lazy to book a limo.

      4. Bill Dalasio   12 years ago

So, basically, she's saying that, because she's gay, young girls and guys shouldn't have a prom. Why does the term "self-centered cunt" come to mind?

    This is for Tulpa.

A Saudi man was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport with a pressure cooker, less than a month after a bomb using one of the kitchen devices was used to kill three and injure hundreds.

    1. Tulpa (LAOL-VA)   12 years ago

Not the same incident as they posted before, and this guy was arrested for using an altered passport and lying to investigators.

Big diff between being questioned by FBI for carrying a pressure cooker into your house (as the other story alleged) and what actually happened with this guy at the airport.

    2. tarran   12 years ago

My Turkish grandmother once got nailed for entering the U.S. with an altered passport.

She decided that she wanted to be 20 years younger and altered her birth-date accordingly.

The Customs guy was very understanding and commiserated with my dad and let her in.

It was back in a less barbaric age.

Looks like the Brits have a familiar fight on their hands.

Two paralyzed British men who want to die but cannot kill themselves went to court on Monday seeking protection from prosecution for those who could help them end their lives.

The case is one of the most high-profile attempts to change the law on the right to die in Britain, where assisted suicide is illegal.

"I'm constantly thinking, 'how on Earth can I do it without getting someone into trouble?'" said Paul Lamb, who was left paralyzed by a car accident in 1990.

Uh, I'm pretty sure the sequester means that the number of wildfires has to be cut back, too.

Remember, kids. If it happens South of the Ohio river and East of the Colorado, teh hicks and hillbillies deserve it. Seriously, the collective "meh" given to Georgia, Florida and Texas wildfires is annoying. But somehow, the closer it gets to California, the more important it becomes.

Woman falls off cliff, and in the hour it takes rescuers/corpse recoverers to get to her body, vultures completely consume it:

United Press International said she fell about 980 feet. According to UPI, it took the vultures about 50 minutes to eat the 52-year-old's body. They left behind nothing but her bones, clothes and shoes.

Major Didier Pericou told The Times of Europe, "When we first went out in the helicopter looking for the body, we saw numerous vultures without realizing what they were doing.

It gets better, it's illegal to shoot the vultures, who are extremely aggressive because:

I agree with you on abortion, but they were born alive, so nearly everyone agrees they're human beings with a right to life.

        Re: Tulpa,

I agree with you on abortion, but they were born alive, so nearly everyone agrees they're human beings with a right to life.

Of course they would agree that those babies were born alive; it would be an extraordinary thing to believe otherwise considering there would be no point in snipping their spinal cords if they weren't (unless the good doctor was affraid they would turn into little zombies).

Many discussions here have centered on the question if these babies or fetuses should be afforded the same protections to their right to life as the rest of us are; that is, the question if those babies are human or not. The position of some in the pro-choice camp is that they are not, which brings up the question when would a person become a person and if there's a specific condition or trigger where a "clump of cells" suddenly obtains his right to life, that is: when a living being, whether inside or outside his or her mother, becomes a person.

        1. Bobarian   12 years ago

"when a living being, whether inside or outside his or her mother, becomes a person."

        2. Robert   12 years ago

For me the question of whether it's human is irrelevant, mere speciesism. For me, what matters is whether it cares. If it doesn't mind dying, and nobody owns it and minds its dying, then no harm, no foul for killing it.

"Let's be clear: if all of these claims, including the system claims, are not patent-eligible, this case is the death of hundreds of thousands of patents, including all business method, financial system, and software patents as well as many computer implemented and telecommunications patents," Moore wrote.

        GOOD.

And the problem is ..... ?

Having a feminist mom must suck.

It gets worse. Back in the girls' aisle, I spy a pink doll stroller and even pinker microwave. My feminist heart sinks for I just know that of all the toys in this massive store, these are the ones to make my child squeal with delight. I draw closer. A vision of Sandberg's face leans toward me, but I swat it away as I look around for gender-neutral versions of these toys. Nope, the only option is pink.

    1. Some call me Tim?   12 years ago

      shrug.

The pinkification of girl's toys is weird.

      1. hamilton   12 years ago

Yeah, stupid toy manufacturers making stuff in colors that make children "squeal with delight". Weird.

        1. Some call me Tim?   12 years ago

Yep, female affinity for the color pink is just totally natural.

Gendered baby clothes are the dumbest fucking thing ever.

Smithsonian has an article on gendered colors and FDR wearing a dress (with photo).

For example, a June 1918 article from the trade publication Earnshaw's Infants' Department said, "The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl." Other sources said blue was flattering for blonds, pink for brunettes; or blue was for blue-eyed babies, pink for brown-eyed babies, according to Paoletti.

In 1927, Time magazine printed a chart showing sex-appropriate colors for girls and boys according to leading U.S. stores. In Boston, Filene's told parents to dress boys in pink. So did Best & Co. in New York City, Halle's in Cleveland and Marshall Field in Chicago.

            1. Warty   12 years ago

So are you telling us that your mom dressed you up in pink?

            2. Some call me Tim?   12 years ago

It's pretty obvious that it was a sales tactic to get mothers to buy a second set of baby clothes instead of passing down what they had dressed their boy or girl in.

The fact that it stuck so well is kind of amazing, and I think it says something about our culture's insecurity with femininity in boys and vice-versa.

So Walmart has been trying to open a store in Midtown Miami for the last couple of years. There's been tons of roadblocks thrown up in their way thanks to a "No Walmart in Midtown" movement that's actually led by a friend of mine. Anyways, he's very proud of himself. Here's a sample of an argument from another person in the movement:

"NO WALFART IN MIDTOWN!! There's already a TARGET!! Hows about putting an Equinox, CRUNCH or LA Fitness in Midtown so people can get healthy instead of spending money on WALFART made in China crap they don't need."

That's basically the argument. There's a Target in the general vicinity, so Walmart is completely unnecessary. And evil. I've tried to interject with a "They can open. If it's as bad as you say, then nobody will patronize the store anyways, and it will close". I got back all the typical "WALMART BAD KILL LOCAL BUSINESSES" arguments.

(the local businesses in Miami generally suck. It's generally gray market (at best) stores with imported and reimported goods)

I'm completely ok with that. In fact, I'm ok with Gitmo remaining open so that woman can be placed there.

When she OD'd, I had a friend who had to call HR to have the woman in the cublicle outside her office stop playing the same 3 songs during the 4th hour. Because apparently, "Could you turn that down a little?" was too subtle.

    3. Agammamon   12 years ago

I understand that having to listen to some poor Whitney imitator for the whole flight would be very unpleasant, I can't understand how it could be so dangerous that you'd seriously stop the flight early to get the woman out of there.

      Re: AlgerHiss,

I suppose this is where "libertarianism" is going to show its wonkish, weak side and come up with some drivel about "right to choose" and other bullshit about freedom

Mind what you're saying, sir. Libertarianism does not mean that one gets to decide whether others are human or not. Murder is still murder; matters little if the victim has legs and feet or not. What matters is that the victim is human.

"Right to choose" is just an euphemism invented by the double-speak crowd. The proper term is abortion. Some libertarians believe that women have a right to abort their children under the justification that women have ownership of their bodies. This is true, but they conveniently leave out the fact that a human fetus also has ownewrship of his or her body. Other libertarians (like me) follow the Non-Aggression Principle to its logical conclusion and find the act of killing another human being, even one in his or her early stages of development, immoral and reprehensible, an act at least deserving social and economic banishment for the perpetrator.

      1. Cytotoxic   12 years ago

      4. lap83   12 years ago

" but they conveniently leave out the fact that a human fetus also has ownership of his or her body."
I agree with this. I also think it's illogical that men don't have any say about the life of the fetus but have to be stuck with the child support if the woman decides to have it. The pro-choice woman's view is not just "it's my body" but "it's my body and if I have this kid, your money is mine too" It's tyrannical.

    6. Cytotoxic   12 years ago

Ezra Klein: The IRS Did the Best They Could. Also...Citizens United

Let's try to keep two things in mind simultaneously: The IRS does need some kind of test that helps them weed out political organizations attempting to register as tax-exempt 501(c)4 social welfare groups. But that test has to be studiously, unquestionably neutral.

It is worth remembering an important fact here: The IRS is supposed to reject groups that are primarily political from registering as 501(c)4s. If they're going to do that, then they need some kind of test that helps them flag problematic applicants. And that test will have to be a bit impressionistic. It will mean taking the political rhetoric of the moment and watching for it in applications. It will require digging into the finances and activities of groups on the left and the right that seem to be political even as they're promising their activities are primarily non-political.

    1. Virginian   12 years ago

I was under the impression that the law said that the group had to be nonpartisan, not nonpolitical.

      1. Tulpa (LAOL-VA)   12 years ago

You're thinking of 527 groups. The TP orgs targeted by the IRS were filing as a 501c3 "social welfare" group, a category which does not permit political advocacy as a central activity of the org.

As I was explaining the other day before being drowned out by people who don't know what they're talking about other than that they hate the IRS: contributions to 527 groups are not tax deductible, while 501c3 contributions are. That's presumably why the TP groups attempted to file as 501c3.

        1. #HOLO YOLO   12 years ago

Ah, never mind, I see the targeted groups were filing as 501c4 (which is not what was reported the other day -- they said 501c3 yesterday) which is not allowed to claim donations to be tax deductible.

          1. robc   12 years ago

For a long while, the libertarian argument seemed to prevail; yes, the argument went, we concede the savagery and the destruction but, to paraphrase Hyman Roth, this is the business they have chosen. Both of those strategies have run their course. Scientific evidence continues to overwhelm any attempts to spin what happens to a human being over the course of a career playing football. And there comes a point at which the libertarian argument runs headlong into the question of whether it is moral for a society to allow people to commit slow-motion suicide for the purposes of mass entertainment.

Keep in mind that Pierce, when he's not calling for the dissolution of sports, acts as the premier New England Patriots jock-sniffer. He's the embodiment of the fact that Massholes never lost their Puritan ideology, it just became secular in nature rather than Christian.

I like how he just declares the libertarian argument is dead without ever proving it so. He says it is, so it fucking is. Deal with it.

It's like how the proglotards decided that after the incident in Newtown, CT, that the gun debate was over. They declared they were going to 'move forward with gun control'.

That's how they are. They always assume that there can be no opposition to their goals. It's because of their group think disease. They can't conceive that anyone, let alone a majority, could possibly not want to go along with everything they think up, no matter how insane.

but... 90% of the people support expanded background checks! Black Jesus told me so!

Well, sometimes when they are suffering from the shock of a political defeat, they resort to fabrications, since they cannot accept any reality that does not match their own.

What? We said it was for the children, and they're still against it?!

why is libertarian becoming a popular term for a lot of shit that is not really libertarian?

I mean, Libertarians comprise of probably less than 10% (and that's generous) of the population, but we are somehow responsible for all the world's problems.

When did we become the (insert hated minority of the month, ie Kikes/Niggers/WOPs/Wetbacks/Muzzies/Commies)?

People are suddenly hating on libertarians because Rand Paul is scaring the shit out of them. They are realizing he is showing a side of the GOP that could actually retake a lot of the country. So they are starting now to make sure that anyone who thinks like him is considered tinfoil-hat and evil.

I don't think so. Better than a Bond movie that year seems unculty to me.
