LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, security at Churchill Downs this Kentucky Derby weekend will be even stricter than in years past — especially at the entrance gates. It's more likely you will to be scanned by a magnetic wand or have your belongings picked apart in the search for forbidden contraband.
And that likely means longer lines.
More items have been banned this year too — on the theory that if there's less being brought in, that will help ease the congestion from the heightened scrutiny.
If you are caught with an item the track says you shouldn't have, you have two options:
1) Go back to your car, drop it off, and get back in line
2) Give it up, and it will be thrown away
You can't check items and come back after the race to retrieve them. That would take too long and be too difficult, said Kevin Flanery, president of the Churchill Downs racetrack.
"It's just impossible for that type of crowd," he said.
