School Terror Created By "Safety Drill" in Oregon

Two masked men wearing hoodies and wielding handguns burst into the Pine Eagle Charter School in this tiny rural community on Friday. Students were at home for an in-service day, so the gunmen headed into a meeting room full of teachers and opened fire.

Someone figured out in a few seconds that the bullets were not drawing blood because they were blanks and the exercise was a drill, designed to test Pine Eagle's preparation for an assault by "active shooters" who were, in reality, members of the school staff. But those few seconds left everybody plenty scared.

Principal Cammie DeCastro said it became clear very quickly just how many of the school's 15 teachers would have survived. The answer: "Not many," she said.

Elementary teacher Morgan Gover, 31, said only two teachers would have lived to tell the tale. She admitted being scared, and also acknowledged she would have been among the casualties, having taken several fake direct hits from the shooters.

"I'll tell you, the whole situation was horrible," she said. "I got a couple in the front and a couple in the back."….

They weren't expecting a drill like this, and they were caught by surprise when the two men entered and began firing….

The district's Safety Committee and the School Board now will critically evaluate policies and procedures and decide what to do next, said DeCastro.

What does one do next? More research is warranted, I suppose, until the teachers actually fire back on the people firing blanks at them.

  1. It would have been hilarious if one of the teacher had a concealed weapon.

    1. Even just having the fake gunmen get the shit beat out of them with chairs would be fun.

Scary as hell, though, to imagine being in the position of drawing and firing on them, only to find out they’re shooting blanks, and it’s not even just a stupid prank, but the administration putting them in that position.

Also, seems like blanks aren’t really safe for something like that, and hell, imagine if they accidentally loaded a real round in that magazine…

      Gah.

      1. I don’t care if it’s in Oregon or any other blue state, rural, Anywhere carries the implicit threat that one of those teachers just might be armed and take my head off.

No way you’d get me to perform this drill!

      2. Elementary teacher Morgan Gover, 31, … would have been among the casualties, having taken several fake direct hits from the shooters.

“I’ll tell you, the whole situation was horrible,” she said. “I got a couple in the front and a couple in the back.”

The bolded sections make me wonder if they were actually using paint pellets instead of “blanks” and the reporter was just sloppy with their terminology. It’s already pretty well established that most reporters don’t know shit about guns.

How else to explain knowing exactly where she would have been hit. Unless she could actually the hits from the wads of paper some blanks are loaded with.

    2. That was my first thought. I’m mostly glad it didn’t happen, because that would give the anti-gunners the opportunity to point and say “see, a crazy gun nut killed those innocent staff members when all they were trying to do was train them”

      1. Can’t tell if serious.

        1. Serious about what? that the gun grabbers would say that? I’ve heard crazier things come out of their mouths.

I posted a story about a gun owner shooting and killing a burglar. One person I know who is thinks that ALL guns should be banned actually said something to the order of “That guy was probably just poor and needed to steal to get money. That guy MURDERED him because he’s less fortunate. Real nice” The rest of the conversation was blah blah gun nuts, blah blah all murderers.

        2. No, no, if that had happened that would be the argument from liberals.

          1. Yeah, that was the intent of my comment. Not sure how that was unclear.

  2. Holy fuck, if my employer did this you can bet: 1, someone would shoot back and 2, there would be lawsuits by many employees.

  3. until the teachers actually fire back on the people firing blanks at them.

If that could help save just one child’s life, ….

    Seriously, aren’t such shenanigans *illegal*?

    1. The “drill”, I mean.

  4. I think the board of directors for the Pine Eagle Charter School need to fire Superintendent Mike Corley and Principal Cammie deCastro tonight.

    Like right now.

Because their error in judgement is so profound as to call into question their fitness to act in loco parentis to a doll, let alone a child.

    1. At least they didn’t wear an NRA T-shirt to school or do something provocative like that.

    2. Yeah, it is beyond belief that someone could not only think this would be good to do but also greenlit it. I mean, what? Fire them instantaneously.

    3. “We’ve switched the schools usual bullets with Folger’s blanks. Let’s see how they react when we kick in the door and open fire.”

I have to agree that this is one of the more astronomically stupid ideas I’ve read about in a long time, and that’s with some very stiff competition.

I think a planned hunt of Superintendent Mike Corley and Principal Cammie deCastro would be sufficient punishment, with a 10 minute head start of course. They’ll find out then, if it’s blanks or bullets.

      1. School administration: The most dumberous game.

        1. They literally only know enough to be dangerous.

      2. “We’ve switched the schools usual bullets with Folger’s blanks. Let’s see how they react when we kick in the door and open fire.”

It’s a good thing I wasn’t drinking anything because it would be all over my monitor and keyboard now. Well played.

  5. I’ve some to realize people who don’t really believe in anything (god, atheism, science, hobbies) just wind up believing and therefore living in fear.

    1. in a world without reason, what is becomes what if

  6. Blanks are actually extremely dangerous, just ask Brandon Lee.

    1. Actually, this guy is a better example than Lee, who was actually killed by a bullet that had lodged in the barrel and the blank pushed it out.

      1. What kind of idiot do you have to be to give dangerous weapons to actors and not at least tell them that they’re dangerous? I mean, obviously the actors are morons, that’s why they’re actors.

        1. Yeah, but Hexum was an unlucky moron. He only had a one in six chance of paying the price for his stupidity, yet he paid.

With Brandon Lee, we all know that the mafia killed him just like they killed Bruce. I know because my dog told me.

        2. Actually there’s a school somewhere in Hollywood that teaches actors and directors the wrong ways to handle firearms. Has to be. It can’t all be accidental.

      2. Isn’t that what happened to Brandon Lee?

    2. Yeah, put a blank round in a gun, put the gun to your head, and pull the trigger.

  7. Really want to meet the genius who green-lit this idea.

    1. Really want to meet bitch-slap the genius who green-lit this idea.

      FTFY

  8. WHAT THE FUCK

I mean, what is even the point of this ‘drill’? It’s a room full of defenseless people surprised by two gunmen. Of course there would be a lot of casualties. What new insights are you supposed to draw from this test?

    1. The purpose is fear. Whether the fear was supposed to cause cheering for gun control, arming teachers, or posting an armed guard in every hallway, the driving force and method were fear.

And mental retardation on the part of those who conceived and authorized it.

    2. Hey now, the working *theory* was that armed intruders ambushing a room full of unarmed and physically contained teachers was that they would all be instantly killed in such an event. We now have the hard data we needed to back up that hypothesis.

      SCIENCE, BITCHES.

  9. imagine just one person in the faculty/staff responded as if things were real, and either physically incapacitating one/more shooter or using a gun/knife against them. The level of stupidity required to give the go-ahead to something like this can only come from someone steeped in govt.

    1. How about the actual staff that was being “tested”. I’ve had a gun pointed at me, it’s scary as fuck. What if one of them had a heart attack or passed out from fear and cracked their skull.

      The derp is never ending.

      1. Actually, this was 2nd Degree Felony Assault, straight up:

        ? 163.175?
        Assault in the second degree
        (1) A person commits the crime of assault in the second degree if the person:
        (a) Intentionally or knowingly causes serious physical injury to another;
        (b) Intentionally or knowingly causes physical injury to another by means of a deadly or dangerous weapon; or
        (c) Recklessly causes serious physical injury to another by means of a deadly or dangerous weapon under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life.
        (2) Assault in the second degree is a Class B felony. [1971 c.743 ?93; 1975 c.626 ?1; 1977 c.297 ?2; 2005 c.22 ?110]

If a staff member had killed one of the shooters, then the shooters and their bosses would be guilty of Criminally Negligent Homicide

If one wants to engage in charge stacking, then each person threatened is a victim of misdemeanor Menacing.

    2. …either physically incapacitating one/more shooter or using a gun/knife against them.

I envisioned something more readily accessible at a school. Think of a gym teacher beating these these two knuckleheads within inches of their lives with a Louisville Slugger. That would have been absolutely golden.

  10. “Here. I want you to take these very real weapons and point them at your coworkers and friends .”

I wonder if the ‘shooters’ even checked the weapon and ammo. Or did they just take the scary bang bang thingey from the nice armed men and say “wow cool!”

    1. Do you really even have to ask this question? Anyone who’s trained enough to check a weapon/ammo when it’s handed to them would know that this is a retarded idea.

Rule 1: treat EVERY gun as though it is loaded.

Simply knowing this rule would preclude pointing it at colleagues and pulling the trigger.

      1. That was my first thought. What’s the first thing you learn about guns? Assume it’s loaded and never point it at anyone unless you plan on shooting them. The teachers should have beat down the two “gunmen” anyway then done the same to whoever greenlit this drill.

    2. Actually in this case I think it is that the reporter is clueless and the shooters were firing paint guns not real guns, that is the only way the one teacher quoted would know that she took “a couple in the front and a couple in the back”

      1. In some ways the paint guns would be worse. They make you wear face and eye protection on paint ball fields for a reason.

        1. Took the words right out of my mouth (fingers?).

Blanks are only mildly dangerous and only at close range or if someone isn’t paying attention and loads live ammo.

I don’t know if you’ve ever been shot with a paintball gun while not wearing protective gear, but it sucks, a lot. Any fleshy parts are gonna bruise like you’ve never bruised before, and anything sensitive like eyes, nose, ears, mouth, nuts, etc could be permanently damaged quite easily.

Besides, paintball guns firing doesn’t have the same effect as gunfire. fwip fwip fwip just doesn’t cause the fear and panic that BLAM BLAM BLAM does.

      2. I think the rounds could possibly have been simunitions.

They fire from realistic looking guns, make something of a boom though probably not nearly as loud, and have a paintball like substance that marks hits.

Of course given that they use a powder charge to fire instead of CO2, its probably just as if not more important for the targets to wear eye/face protection.

        1. sim rounds are fucking nasty. that shit hurts.

  11. Bluto: Holy shit!
D-Day: There were blanks in that gun!
Flounder: I didn’t even point the gun at him!
    Bluto: Holy shit!
    D-Day checks the gun
D-Day: There were blanks in that gun!
Flounder: Maybe he had a heart attack.
    Bluto: Holy shit!

  12. Wow. Is there a maximum IQ limit for school administrative positions or does it just self sort that way?

    1. God created the idiot for practice. Then he created the school board. -Twain

  13. I would quit on the spot if they pulled something like that here.

    1. I would call a lawyer first. But then I would be suing their ass of and retiring on the settlement.

  14. Hmmm….

Well obviously I would never carry a gun at work, because it’s not allowed. Not even if I owned a very nice little 9mm that conceals perfectly and is very comfortable to carry all day long. Even if I were the type who, hypothetically of course, thinks it better to be judged by 12 then carried by six.

Which is why the whole thing is a terrible idea. Especially if I were a teacher, I’m gonna carry the gun. If I ever have to use it, I’ll be a goddamn hero and they can charge me if they wish.

    1. and they would charge you b/c the alternative is to admit they made a mistake while exploiting the terminal stupidity of those two guinea pigs.

  15. What the fuck… I don’t even… What were they trying to prove? How easy it would be to mow down unarmed people in a “gun free zone?” They could have just asked James Holmes.

  16. Ok while the entire idea was massively stupid the fact that no one had a heart attack or acted rationally and attacked the shooters causing serious injury before waiting to realize they weren’t real bullets tempers the outrage enough for me to wonder just how many pairs of underwear went into the trash that night.

Also, had I been a teacher in that room I’d be retiring today with a permanent disability thanks to work induced PTSD

  17. Many will use this to claim that even if someone had a concealed weapon they would not of had the time to react and therefore concealed carry is not needed and those who do suffer from penis envy.

  18. Kind of reminds me of the 8th grade. Two classes were combined for a lecture on the Vietnam War. Suddenly the door to the classroom flies open and a hand grenade lands right in the center of the room. After a few seconds of shock my social studies teacher walks in in full battle-rattle, explains that we’d all be dead, and proceeds with the lesson. Hard to imagine it happening today.

    1. Hard to imagine it happening today

      No, no it’s not.

    2. Please tell me you picked up the fake hand grenade and hurled it as hard as you could at the teacher’s head.

  19. Hopefully it won’t get to the point where one frail teacher dies of a heart attack for this asinine “drill” to be permanently laid to rest. Mass firings should ensue.

    1. If just one teacher has a heart attack and dies it will all be worth it.

  20. “The district’s Safety Committee and the School Board now will critically evaluate policies and procedures and decide what to do next, said DeCastro.”

What to do next? Bury the dead, man, bury the dead.

  21. Two masked men wearing hoodies and wielding handguns burst into the Pine Eagle Charter School in this tiny rural community on Friday. Students were at home for an in-service day, so the gunmen headed into a meeting room full of teachers and opened fire

This can’t be fucking real. It just can’t be. Tell me that people at the meeting were told ahead of time, or were supposed to be.

I mean, what the fuck. People with serious heart conditions can die under these conditions.

Even during relatively light earthquakes, you always have one or two deaths due to heart attack.

Someone figured out in a few seconds that the bullets were not drawing blood because they were blanks and the exercise was a drill, designed to test Pine Eagle’s preparation for an assault by “active shooters” who were, in reality, members of the school staff. But those few seconds left everybody plenty scared.

Ie, prove that in a gun-free zone, they are, by definition totally unprepared?

    Fuck this world.

  22. A liberal’s guide to active shooter response
Step 1 – Dramatically turn over the nearest peice of furniture
Step 2 – Dive, preferably in slow motion, behind the piece of furniture to provide cover. It should be noted that bullets do not penetrate anything except innocent people and hunting targets.
Step 3 – Wait until the shooter reloads. This may take some time as large capacity ammunication feeding clip devices contain thousands of magazines that can be fired as fast as the shooter can imagine with surgical precision.
Step 4 – Once the shooter has initiated the lengthy reloading process, grab the nearest pair of scissors, do a backflip across the room and deliver a perfectly-timed non-lethal roundhouse to the shooter’s weapon, disarming him.
Step 5 – The disarmed shooter, having realized that he was defeated by a ninny, will immediately retreat.
Step 6 – Collect “Liberal of the Year” trophy and pose for your cover shot on HuffPo

    1. You. Win.

      1. Definitely a good post, but it feels like it’s missing something, and I can’t place it.

Step four seems too violent for the liberal. It seems like step four would be to open up an anti-bullying dialogue with him.

  23. So, if this was set up not to test the implementation of some sort of contingency plan or procedure (as would typically be indicated by a “drill”), but was intended to help promote some sort of agenda, would it be more accurate to characterize it as a terrorist act?
