Congresswoman Does Not Realize the 'Assault Magazines' She Wants to Ban Are Reusable

Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) is the chief co-sponsor, with Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), of the High Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, which would ban the sale or transfer of magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds. Upon reintroducing the bill in January, she said banning what she calls "assault magazines" would "go a long way toward making our country safe." If DeGette seems overly optimistic about the potential impact of her legislation, especially given the fact that many millions of "high-capacity ammunition feeding devices" would remain in circulation, perhaps that's because she does not realize magazines are reusable. At a Denver Post forum on gun control yesterday, DeGette explained why she thinks her bill would be effective:
What's the efficacy of banning these magazine clips? I will tell you these are ammunition, they're bullets, so the people who have those now, they're going to shoot them. And so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high-capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won't be any more available.
The Denver Post notes that the audience "chuckled" after DeGette's remarks (which you can watch in the video below, starting at minute 31) and that Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith, "responding as the audience was laughing, urged people who hadn't shot a gun to 'get to the facts,'" adding, "Let's be educated as we make this decision.'" DeGette's office says she "misspoke"—just like McCarthy did when she described a barrel shroud, one of the assault-weapony firearm features she wants to ban, as "the shoulder thing that goes up."

Now, my caddie's chauffeur informs me that a bank is a place where people put money that isn't properly invested.
Whereas I have a ham dinner with mayonnaise waiting for me at my mansion, I find the defendant guilty. Auric, I hereby sentence you to be executed at sundown.
I change my plea to insanity.
"Quit badgering the witness!"
"Badger? Where?"
I refuse to testify about the badger's whereabouts on the grounds that my organs will be chopped up into a patty.

Whenever you are tempted to think the politicians are evil masterminds, just look to geniuses like this woman, and you can rest assured that you shouldn't ascribe malice to that which can be ascribed to stupidity.
The malicious guys are the people who give stupid morons like Diane Degette money and then fill their credulous, cretinous minds with barbaric ideas to implement with the apparatus of the nation-state.
"You are an ill-made, spiteful little creature full of envy, lust, and low cunning."
"Where do whores go?"
Diana DeGette is as gentle as King Maegor, as selfless as Aegon the Unworthy, as wise as Mad Aerys. She never forgets a slight, real or imagined. She takes caution for cowardice and dissent for defiance. And she is greedy. Greedy for power, for honour, for love.

Guam may capsize.
They are mostly morons Episiarch. I have met a few of them. And I have met a few giant brains. But mostly they are morons who have mastered the art of telling people what they want to hear.
" Friends I stand before you today to state the obvious, declare my support for the things you like and scapegoat my political rivals as the cause of all the things you don't."
You care about me Tim. And that is all that matters. You care.
One of the most pathetic experiences I had in the Navy occured when a delegation of Congressional staffers flew out for a DV tour on my carrier.
It was dusk. We were conducting flight ops with then Captain Willard (he would rise to the rank of four star admiral and ended up being the one asked about Guam capsizing) sitting in his chair on the bridge supervising. I was on watch as the conning officer, so I was standing at his right hand driving the ship. The winds were variable but there were no other ships for 15 miles, so I was free to chase them.
The staffers came up on the bridge, and the A-Nav did his usual song and dance where he had them take the helm one after another, a practice I had gotten into trouble for vociferously opposing when were conducting flight ops (these fuckers would allow us to come off course and we'd have planes landing off the center-line, and one time we had a wave off after some idiot spun the helm to left after I ordered a 2 degree turn to the right, and the SNQM's who were supposed to be steering the ship were these 18 year old kids who were too scared to take charge, especially because they worked for the A-Nav who was a smarmy fuck who didn't give a shit about doing his job right)
The ones who weren't taking their turns were clustered behind me chatting with the captain and taking in the sights. They started asking questions about the carrier and the next-gen carrier that the Navy was planning. It was fucking embarrassing. One of the questions was, I shit you not, how our reactor core ejection system worked, "you know, if you have a runaway nuclear reaction". I couldn't help it, I actually swore out loud at that one. One lady, who looked like the caricature of an overweight Bryn Mawr women's studies graduate, asked what on the outset I thought was going to be an intelligent question as to why we built carriers with catapults that operated non VSTOL aircraft when all the other navies were switching to jump ramps and VSTOL aircraft. But my hopes were dashed when it turned out that she thought the purpose of the aircraft was to defend the battle group against air attack like something out of the cartoon Star Blazers, and she thought she was giving us helpful advice because we could scramble our jets quicker if we weren't loading them one by one on catapults.
They were clueless and thought they were the smartest guys in the world.
After they left I made some comment about their intelligence, and Capt Willard smiled ruefully said, "we have to be nice to them, because they make most of the decisions for the congressmen".
Tarran, I do ot suppose you have ever lived in El Paso or Albuquerque have you?
Nope. The closest I got to Texas was driving across Utah on my way to CA.
Roger that. I have an old from that neck of the woods whose name is Terran.
....how our reactor core ejection system worked, "you know, if you have a runaway nuclear reaction".
What?? You can't eject the core like Geordi LaForge can on TNG.
I weep for this nation!

Tarran you?
I ascribe malice AND stupidity in equally massive measure to morons like this dipshit.
"I know that when I'm finished using *my* magazines I throw them away. Why, the only Harper's and Mother Jones you'll find around my place are the current issues."
That sounds like a quote from How to Lie With Statistics?
That is a *great* book.
She sits the Energy and Commerce committee, which has pretty broad jurisdiction, including health care. I can assure you here knowledge of health care is not much better than her knowledge of firearms.
One does not need to be an expert in everything to put his or her hand in everything. To expect that would be just insane. With insanity comes loss of 2nd Amendment privileges. CHECK AND MATE.
*Damn* it, Fist, stop giving them ideas!
I listened to the Committee on Public Safety hearings here in CA yesterday. AB 48, which would require an FFL & background check to sell or transfer ammunition and bans 10+ round magazine rebuild kits was being discussed.
Nancy Skinner, the Bay Area loon who introduced it, claimed that high capacity magazines turn single shot weapons into semiautomatics. And that if cars were killing and hurting as many people as guns were, we'd "do something about it." Twas infuriating, to say the least.
LOL. I would like to hand her my single barrel break shot gun and a magazine and ask her where to put the magazine, because I would love to upgrade it to a semi-automatic and it turns out my problem is I just can't figure out where the magazine goes.
How fucking deluded do you have to be to not learn from the "barrel shroud" incident? Christ, I figured that politicians would at least do the reserch to keep themselves from looking like idiots. You already can't appeal with facts or logic. If you can't even appeal to self interest with these fuckers, what's left?
You can say that again.
Seems like three dumbest congressional moments are:
1) Guam capsize
2) Non-reloadable magazines
3) Barrel shroud
I'm just not sure on the order. Congress is dumb, but is there anything else that comes close to these three?
"We should send the mars rover by the moon landing site. I think the people would be inspired by it."
No.... That's not real.... That, just... no....
It's like a really bad television show.
Totally fake? Excellent, just what I needed to hear.
Oh, and also, not remotely connected to you and me? Even better.
And she's my rep, too.
All I see is a sugarfreed link, proving that they aren't really this stupid and it was just a joke you made.
Link works for me.
Quit your lies Coeus. We don't live in a world that is that stupid.
You made that up? It's really good.
Quick google, SanFran Nan must surely have plenty to beat that.
"Every week we don't pass a Stimulus package, 500 million Americans lose their jobs."
"Unemployment benefits are creating jobs faster than practically any other program"
DWS ought to be able to top it easily too.
Yes, but nobody beats Sheila Jackson Lee. No one.
Oh, what the heck.
Hey...the Great Pumpkin does exist!
Are we only counting federal congress? If not, there's also the time Indiana tried to legislatively change the value of Pi.
The bill never became law, due to the intervention of a mathematics professor who happened to be present in the legislature.
How fucking deluded do you have to be to not learn from the "barrel shroud" incident? Christ, I figured that politicians would at least do the reserch to keep themselves from looking like idiots. You already can't appeal with facts or logic. If you can't even appeal to self interest with these fuckers, what's left?
You don't need to do research when you already know everything.
Hell they don't even know whats in the bills they pass. Why should they bother with researching anything. They have staff for that.
so once it was explained that her working assumptions that she based the law on were wrong, she changed her mind?
She proposed an amendment that would make all magazines one-time-use items.
North Korea has "authorized" a nuclear attack on the US. Obama has authorized John Kerry to go to Korea and posture and maybe go to the border and look through that stupid binocular thing.
I don't know what to think anymore. What the fuck has gotten into that nitwit? I wasn't aware that the sanctions were that big of a deal. Is he serious? If not, what the hell is he doing and why now?
http://houston.cbslocal.com/20.....ea-threat/
This article about an attack on Austin Fucking, Texas is surreal.
"Austin city officials are keeping an eye on the situation.
'Our regional intelligence center has been staying apprised of the current situation,' City Manager Marc A. Ott told CBS Houston in a statement."
"Perry further explained, 'Economically, what has happened in Texas over the course of the last decade has made this city an epicenter for a lot of technology, a lot of economic development, and I think the individuals in North Korea understand that Austin, Texas is now a very important city in America, as do corporate CEOs and other people who are moving here in record numbers.'"
If you were planning on bombing the US, those are the things you would think about.
Dude, they can't get a missile to reach Hawaii...let alone Tejas.
FUCK!
I was hoping the Norks would take out a fleet of food trucks.
I love that Perry quote. That's total commitment to your state's PR, right there.
Indeed, that is awesome PR ballz.
"I can't believe anyone is buying this press release. They must not be reading it anymore. I could put anything in here, and it would still get printed. Like last week, I stabbed a hobo. People all over the country are seeing how awesome Austin is, and it's all 'cause of my press releases."
Which nitwit are you talking about? Kim, Kerry, or Obama?
Well. giants don't exactly walk the earth these days.
Bullshit. There has never been a bigger head than John Kerry.
Exactly, and I'm even more worried about Kim Jong Un.
Sanctions are an act of war.
^THIS^. Back in the olden days, not letting goods, services, or people into or out of a city was called a siege and everyone knew that it was an act of war.
Wait...
*blinks*
...she's a Congresswoman? I thought she must be a state legislator, because you can't get to Congress and be that dumb, and...
...wait.
*face palm*
I had the same thought. Was much happier when I was having that.
my theory is the rest of the country sends the the local assholes to congress to get them out of town for 2 years. the biggest assholes statewide win senate seats and are exiled for six years.
It's an excellent plan - we screw it up by acknowledging the laws they pass and sending them money.
Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) is the chief co-sponsor, with Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), of the High Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, which would ban the sale or transfer of magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds.
Another win for limited government. Hoorah!
Why don't you go start that perfect anarchist society and let us all know how it works out then?
"What's the efficacy of banning these magazine clips? I will tell you these are ammunition, they're bullets, so the people who have those now, they're going to shoot them. And so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high-capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won't be any more available."
Even if what she said was true she would still be retarded.
I think the real issue if whether she supports gay marriage, pot, porn and government funded abortions.
yep, cause that's all we care about.
Your Team Red concern trolling is getting really old.
"What's the efficacy of banning these magazine clips?"
Clip. That's not what you're banning in your bill.
even if she knew what a high capacity magazine was, she'd fail to realize that you can't ban them. soon it will be simple to just print them yourself: http://idealab.talkingpointsme.....-video.php
In what world does this comment even remotely make sense? Unless you destroy magazines, the overall number of them doesn't decrease. And rounds of ammunition =/= magazines.
That's the point. She thinks the magazines get destroyed.used up when the gun is fired, like ammo does.
that's weapons-grade stupid
Ba-dum-tiss!
I thought the purpose of Congressional staffers was to keep their critters from being exposed as the completely evil fucking morons they actually are.
They can't always get to them in time. Sometimes, when they're out of reach of their handlers, a congresscritter gets it in his head to try out a cool one-liner he's been working on. Then all the staffer can do is watch in horror as it unfolds.
I'm trying to think of an illustrative movie example.
Maybe it's like that episode of The Office where Michael is pitching a plan to save the company during a break at the shareholders' meeting but he screws it up because Oscar isn't around.
It makes sense to her because she thinks ammo magazines are like a box of tampons.
Maybe she thinks they are like batteries or computer drives.
She would be right if I had a rail-gun.
Ban assault electrolytes. We don't need drug-addicted plants sucking up all the dole money that should be going to the farmers.
But Brawndo is what plants crave!
You mean like toilet water?
Man! That documentary was awesome.
Idiocracy!
Look, I don't want to sound like a dick or nothing but uh, it says on your chart you're fucked up, you talk like a fag and your shit's retarded.
Teaching moment. Show this clip to people. She's this dumb about firearms, and yet feels compelled to make laws about them. What makes anyone thinks she's any smarter about any of the rest of the crap she wants to legislate about?
That clip of Carolyn McCarthy wanting to ban "the shoulder thing that goes up" has been around for years, and gun grabbers still think she's a genius.
There's a reason why this lady is in Congress and not working in a real job.
The baffling story of the "no in da butt" Ford Escort.

'You'd probably be dead anyway,' she added, smirking."

"The shoulder thing that goes up."
"And so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high-capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won't be any more available. "
Guam might capsize if we station too many sailors there.
I could go on all day with crap like that.
Holy fuck. The decision to disband this government and send these fucking ignoramuses packing should be a no brainer. I shouldnt even have to make the argument, all I should have to do is quote these drooling idiots.
"You know- morons."
Where's Tony? Shouldn't he be here, explaining why we should take advice on self-defense--or anything else--from people so blatantly ignorant?
She is what I picture Tony looking like.
Holy shit, that's dumb. Even stripper clips can be reused all day long.
In fact one reason why I keep an SKS and a Garand around is because they run on clips instead of magazines. I will still be able to shoot them, re-using the clips, long after all the feed lips on my magazines for other guns have worn out and the springs have gone soft.
With respect to a normal human lifespan clips never wear out.
That chick seems to be way full of herself.

I went to law school with that idiot DeGette. Her claim to fame there was filing a complaint against a moot court judge who suggested that she be more "ladylike" during oral argument. Good to see that she hasn't changed in 30 years.
This is why I drink
I am telling you this woman pulled a cunning stunt.
Well who would want to use a dirty, used magazine anyway? That's why I throw mine away after each use.
Am I crazy or does it seem like even just a dozen years ago an elected official would have been laughed out of office for saying something this stupid...about anything?
What has happened? Have our expectations as a nation gotten so low that this seems like no big deal?
This is why I love/hate Reason. I can't stop reading but it makes me sooo angry.
