  • The Office of Advocacy, an agency within the Small Business Administration, part of the Department of Commerce, says the IRS did not calculate how much Obamacare regulations would cost small businesses in dollars and hours, as required by a 1981 law. The IRS says small businesses aren't required to provide healthcare coverage so the cost of the regulations wasn't calculated.

Barack Obama arrived in Tel Aviv today for his first visit to Israel as president.

Why go anywhere you're not adored?

    1. Counterfly   12 years ago

Well he just wanted a good bagel before heading over to Palestine.

    2. Rich   12 years ago

The protesters also set fire to signs posted in the city earlier this week reminding Obama that Palestinians still don't have 3G communications technology.

      WTF?

      1. Drake   12 years ago

        Maybe he's bringing them Obamaphones.

      2. Jerry on the boat   12 years ago

Also, they want HBO and Showtime.

        1. Rich   12 years ago

"Jew see what's on HBO these days?"

          /Woody Allen

      3. LTC(ret) John   12 years ago

"We came here today to tell Obama that we don't want 3G in Palestine," said Samir Odeh, a Fatah activist in Bethlehem.

Well OK then. I am sure we can proudly proclaim that we will not provide any wireless support for Fatah!

        1. Virginian   12 years ago

Well, SLD applies, but the single most effective thing we could probably do to advance liberty would be setting up a global satellite Internet system that anyone could access.

          1. mad libertarian guy   12 years ago

I've long said that since our government is hell bent on spending $3.5T annually (in the short term), they should spend it on bringing decent broadband to rural America instead of wars in far away lands.

            Because Windstream sucks.

      4. VG Zaytsev   12 years ago

        Palestinians think Obama's god too.

    3. Palin's Buttplug   12 years ago

He is picking up his Presidential Medal of Distinction Award from Israel.

      1. wareagle   12 years ago

well, being the POTUS who hates Israel is quite the distinction.

        1. T   12 years ago

Why should he get an award for being second? Jimmy Carter rode that into the ground before Obama was ever elected.

          1. PS   12 years ago

What higher qualification does POTUS need than an unconditional love of Israel?

            1. T   12 years ago

I think something about fidelity to a dead irrelevant document is on the list somewhere above foreign entanglements. I'd review it, but it's written in the language of White Privilege, which I have eschewed for the benefit of mankind.

              1. PS   12 years ago

Reading documents written by slave-owners is just a tacit approval of slavery. I applaud your ethics.

    4. Way Of The Crane   12 years ago

He had to go to Tel Aviv because the White House erased Jerusalem from its maps.

    5. Rich   12 years ago

The White House has released what it says is a map of Israel. The only problem is that Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the Golan Heights are missing.

      1. Rich   12 years ago

        Oops, sorry!

    6. Jerryskids   12 years ago

I am assuming that 'his first visit to Israel as president' means that He now considers Himself the president of Israel.

  2. Bee Tagger   12 years ago

The Department of Public Instruction in Wisconsin has been combatting "white privilege" in the classroom by explaining how white people are racist.

A white person better not get promoted for having this idea.

    1. Counterfly   12 years ago

Turns out they were 1/32nd Native American, so it's all kosher.

      1. gaijin   12 years ago

        Elizabeth Warren was in WI?

        1. mnarayan   12 years ago

I guess you didn't see the 1 in the numerator?

        2. SugarFree   12 years ago

Why? Did someone report an odor of lilacs and moral rot?

          1. Rich   12 years ago

            lilacs and moral rot

            Nice band name.

    2. Citizen Nothing   12 years ago

      A white person

We prefer the term "Person of Colorlessness."

      1. gaijin   12 years ago

your comment is a transparent attempt to make light of the situation in WI

        1. a better weapon   12 years ago

What you did there? I see it.

        2. Way Of The Crane   12 years ago

What you did there... I saw through it.

          1. LTC(ret) John   12 years ago

            Augh!

      2. Rich   12 years ago

        That crackered me up!

        1. LTC(ret) John   12 years ago

That remark was beyond the pale.

          1. sloopyinca   12 years ago

I'm gonna chalk this subthread up to childishness.

            1. LTC(ret) John   12 years ago

Yeah, we just need to whitewash the whole thing.

              1. Scruffy Nerfherder   12 years ago

                It's nothing a little bleach won't cure.

                1. sloopyinca   12 years ago

                  Haha.

                  WHITEY!!!!!

                2. Jerry on the boat   12 years ago

                  Damn you!

                  1. Jerry on the boat   12 years ago

                    Ugh. Not you sloopyinca.

              2. Jerry on the boat   12 years ago

                I suggest using bleach.

Does anyone know where I can redeem my "White Privilege Points"?

Capital One has no restrictions on using your points. At least that's what Alex Baldwin says.

The Department of Education's sequester cuts are taking a brutal toll on federally-funded schools on Native American reservations, but the federal agency still found money to create a new six-figure job promoting "Educational Excellence for African-Americans."

So is this a garden variety crook, a random killing, or the first shots fired in Bleeding Colorado?

    1. Counterfly   12 years ago

Bleeding, Colorado is not a real city, but it should be.

    2. Jerryskids   12 years ago

Isn't Colorado much like California in that the for-profit prison/industrial complex has lots of rich opportunities for corruption? I wouldn't necessarily assume some ex-con shot the guy, I would look into who all might be connected to any secret bank accounts the guy had. It wouldn't surprise me to find out the guy had some 'business partners' who use debt-collectors who make housecalls.

  4. Fist of Etiquette   12 years ago

The AP says though Paul omitted the point that appeared in the prepared remarks, he confirmed the position afterward.

THIS IS A WORSE GAFFE THAN TAKING A SIP OF WATER DURING A NATIONAL SPEECH.

He was sure to remember the point when he kidnapped that poor woman and made her worship Aqua Osiris.

To be fair, she seems to know that.

'The problem was that I lost all those pounds, but I didn't have to change a goddamn thing about my self. I didn't have to address any of the emotional or psychological issues.

'I didn't have to figure out why I had been depressed ? why I was still so, so depressed, despite the fact that the one thing I thought had been ruining my life was suddenly gone.'

        1. T   12 years ago

"Wherever I had gone, I was sure to find myself there."

Which sucks if you don't like yourself, I suppose. I'm not afflicted with this particular problem, so I wouldn't know. Maybe one of you self-hating low self-esteem neurpotics can chime in on this. Epi?

        2. SugarFree   12 years ago

But she doesn't seem to connect it back to it being why she was overweight to begin with. She acts as if they were completely unrelated conditions. It's just a pet peeve that comes with dealing with other diabetics, like my aunt, who eats an entire box of chocolate covered cherries in a single sitting, then complains about her weigh and how much insulin she takes.

          1. Shine on, Nikki Diamond   12 years ago

It's very simple, Sug. Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels, but if you don't feel thin...NOM NOM NOM

Speaking personally, lots of shit tastes as good as thin feels, hence the extra 25 pounds.

She doesn't know why she was overweight to begin with.

            1. AlmightyJB   12 years ago

I think one of the issues is that people have different mechanisms for dealing with stress and major events. Once someone learns to deal with their problems with food or drugs or whatever than it becomes hard to unlearn that because we are mostly creatures of habit that live out a great part of our days on autopilot. At first the eating or drinking works for them. It does relieve the stress. Then they begin to rely on it. It doesn't take long before it stops working and becomes a problem in and of itself. Unfortunately, something in the back of their mind keeps taking them back to the time when it did work for them and made them feel better. So when they get busy and stressed they go into that autopilot mode and they fall back on those bad habits. They convince themselves that they don't give a shit and hit the bar or the buffet. That's why people can successfully lose weight over a long period of time and then gain it back once they hit a rough spot. Their brain is basically looking for an excuse to seek that stress relief. One thing that often happens is that exercise will replace their stress relief mechanism. (cont)

              1. AlmightyJB   12 years ago

Often when people get overloaded with problems, those problems cause time constraints and exercise is the first thing that goes out the window. They think that ok I'll start back and run a little harder once I deal with this problem. Unfortunately though the dropping of the new stress reliever makes the desire to go back to what worked before that much greater. There is obviously an element of willpower (for some more than others) but it's certainly more complicated than just that. Many overweight people show great willpower in other aspects of their lives and in fact are quite successful . And of course it's not like for six months or a year they have willpower while losing weight and then the next day they don't have willpower. There's always something else going on there that makes them pick up that drink or bag of chips. It's not just lack of knowledge or lack of willpower. If endorphins came in a little pill they would be addicted to that instead.

On the one hand, we've got an "epidemic" of "obesity" (sneer quotes intended), but when popular culture promotes thinness, that's just evil.

      1. Professional Target   12 years ago

"Promoting thinness" is like promoting going to a resort in a secret location. They show you plenty of pretty pictures, but you can't find good directions of how to get there.

        1. Auric Demonocles   12 years ago

          Eat less, exercise more.

          1. Citizen Nothing   12 years ago

I'm repeating myself, but I have had great success over the last four months with cutting out "seconds" and snacks and limiting myself to an average of one drink a day. (Sometimes I save up for a week so I can get really, really blasted.)

            1. Auric Demonocles   12 years ago

You get hammered off 7 drinks? But otherwise, yeah, it's a really simple formula. The issue isn't with understanding what you have to do, it's with having the willpower to do it.

              1. Citizen Nothing   12 years ago

You get hammered off 7 drinks?

Well, not that lite beer shit you drink.

                1. Auric Demonocles   12 years ago

I really only drink Lights at tailgates.

              I'm repeating myself,

And I congratulate you on that.

Cutting down can work to the extent that it reduces the intake of alcohol, sugar and starches. Losing 20 pounds was simply not clinically significant for me when I was 360+ pounds.

          2. Professional Target   12 years ago

            Eat less, exercise more.

For the obese, you may as well tell them to cut off their left leg to lose weight. Even if they could do it, it wouldn't be helpful. I know, I used to be one of them.

          3. Brett L   12 years ago

Fuck that. Exercise right, eat right. You want to get healthy, which is not thin, but toned. Eat clean food, cut the carbs to fruits and veg.

              Exercise right, eat right

                Shit. Fuck you squirrels. Yes.

            2. Auric Demonocles   12 years ago

Well, for someone who is overweight, exercising right probably means exercising more, and eating right probably involves eating less.

              1. Professional Target   12 years ago

Well, for someone who is overweight, exercising right probably means exercising more, and eating right probably involves eating less.

Nope. I lost weight eating more and exercising less. No kidding. Everything in your body is controlled by hormones. In the case of weight gain, by insulin. If you promote insulin production, you promote weight gain.

Jonah Goldberg: Fusion Power on the Right
Conservatives and libertarians have always agreed more than disagreed.
    http://www.nationalreview.com/.....h-goldberg

Just look at where libertarianism has had its greatest impact: economics. There simply isn't a conservative economics that is distinct from a libertarian one. Adam Smith, Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, Henry Hazlitt, Ludwig von Mises, James M. Buchanan & Co. are gods of the libertarian and conservative pantheons alike. When Pat Buchanan wanted to move America towards protectionism and statism, he had to leave the party to do it.

Libertarian and conservative critiques of Obamacare, the stimulus, and other Democratic policies are indistinguishable from one another. On trade, taxes, property rights, energy, the environment, intellectual property, and other issues, I'd be hard-pressed to tell you the difference, if any, between the conservative and libertarian positions.

    1. Citizen Nothing   12 years ago

      Except libertarians, like, mean it.

      1. Counterfly   12 years ago

They can sucker in a LOT more votes by pretending to agree with us, than by actually agreeing with us.

        1. Citizen Nothing   12 years ago

Libertarians have no power that they must hang on to, so they can actually believe in their own principles and stuff.

      2. robc   12 years ago

        This.

But the basic point is also why liberaltarianism had no chance.

You can find economic conservatives who will meet half way or at least a 1/4 way on civil rights. Buckley favored drug legalization. Scalia votes with Ginsberg on procedural court issues. Warren is criticizing her GOP opponent for supporting pot.

Assuming you can even find a strong civil liberties progressive, can you find one that will meet us half way on economic issues?

        1. Virginian   12 years ago

Seriously, I'd settle for a Democrat Deng Xiaoping at this point. The idea that a dynamic, growing economy is a natural feature is sunk deep into their little brains. They never think the golden goose will die, no matter how many laws and regulations they lay on top of it.

        2. gaijin   12 years ago

Assuming you can even find a strong civil liberties progressive, can you find one that will meet us half way on economic issues?

But is that a reflection of the fact that dems control senate and executive branch or something more fundamental? I don't recall lots of conservatives making the case for libertarian economic principles when the controlled senate/house and executive government.

The difference is the Dems suck even when entirely out of power. Like with the GOP on the economy, the Dems get better on civil liberties when out of power.

But they still suck on economics.

Or, an easier way to look at it: Who is the democratic Justin Amash in the House? Who is the democratic Rand Paul in the Senate?

The GOP sucks hard, but the Dems are worse.

        3. sarcasmic   12 years ago

There is a tariff on foreign shoes that exists simply to keep New Balance in business.

A good economist understands that that tariff hurts many more Americans than it benefits. By forcing everyone to pay more money for a pair of shoes, they then have less money to buy other things. But that is unseen.
Proponents of the tariff argue that ending it would cost American jobs, and that the shoe stores wouldn't pass the savings onto consumers. They'd just give more profits to rich people.

So who will win an election? Some libertarian who promises to save everyone a few buck on a pair of shoes, or their opponent who accuses them of wanting to kill American jobs and give more profits to the rich?

If you piss off the ten million or so hardcore gun owners, they won't buy your shit. I know people who still won't buy Ruger because of what Bill Ruger said. Or SW because of their deal with the devil in the 90s.

                    8. Virginian   12 years ago

Back in the 90s, Bill Ruger said something like "no one needs more then five rounds". This was when the AWB was in effect, so the AR was not the American Rifle that is to today, but kind of a fringey thing in the minds of many gun owners.

SW cut some kind of deal with the Clinton administration. I can't remember what it was off the top of my head, but it pissed off a lot of people.

Nowadays of course, both companies are big into the CCW market.

To a LARGE swath of the political right in America, including a majority of the Republican Establishment "Free markets" means pro business policies and regulations which protect established businesses and industries against newcomers.

When a libertatrian thinks "Free Markets" the needs of businesses are not considered, only the rights of individuals.

      1. Jerryskids   12 years ago

Yes. I think he is comparing libertarians and libertarian Republicans. No surprise that there's a lot of overlap between the two. If you feel 'hard-pressed' to see the difference between libertarian and conservative positions, take a look at the Bush position on the GM bankruptcy as a typical example of a conservative position. Or virtually any pro-business position - it's almost always anti-free-market.

    5. Don Mynack   12 years ago

Conservatives, such as National Review founder William F. Buckley, pushed libertarians out of the their movement during the 50's because they were not sufficiently anti-communist. Buckley hated Rothbard.

    6. Eduard van Haalen   12 years ago

Goldberg rightly rejects the traditional analysis of fusionism as some kind of odd-couple alliance between incompatible factions. Instead, he points out, it's a philosophical position derived from the best in the American tradition - the idea that freedom and virtue are inseparable, and in fact are parts of the same thing.

Contrary to the traditional analysis, It's the *philosophy* of fusionism which has proved enduring and the political alliance of libertarians and socons which has regrettably broken down. We have socons suggesting federal takeovers of education for the sake of virtue, wars on people who grow certain plants, wars abroad to spread democracy, etc, all of which undermine morality as well as liberty. On the other hand we have libertarians sneering and rolling their eyes at traditional moral rules, especially in the area of sex, and suggesting that the reason to legalize extramarital sex, porn, etc. is not philosophical commitment to freedom, but simply because these things are cool and nifty.

      1. Eduard van Haalen   12 years ago

Heck, if they can pinpoint things that accurately, why stop there? "It was Pepsi!"

      1. Brett L   12 years ago

The Harvard researchers scrubbed data from a 2010 Global Burden of Diseases study on the consumption levels of sugar-sweetened drinks to measure global intake.

The results revealed that geography may have an impact on how sugary drinks affect certain populations.

Of nine world regions, Latin American and Caribbean countries had the most diabetes-related deaths associated with sugary drinks, while East and Central Europe/Asia claimed the most heart-related deaths.

This is just outright bullshit. Epidemiological studies like this are rife with correlations that have no unique causative variable.

            1. Auric Demonocles   12 years ago

First I have to see how serious an obstacle one of her comments was. Another person on our team mentioned not being alive when a movie in one of the questions came out in the mid-late 80s. This prompted the redhead to ask "How young are you?" to the 25 year old (e.g. older than me)...

              1. sgs   12 years ago

Honestly, she sounds stupid, if she's 32 SHE was born in the 80's, so the idea that someone else is a few years younger shouldn't blow her mind.

                1. sloopyinca   12 years ago

Maybe she just thought he was older based on his appearance and vocalized it.

I've asked women the same thing when they said something similar and I thought they were older based on their appearance.

                  1. Auric Demonocles   12 years ago

That might be a possibility. The 25 girl, myself, and the friend that invited her all work at the same company, which typically only hires master's and above. If she knew that, she might have expected all the younger ~2 year vet employees to be about her friend's age (28). But I finished my master's at 22, so that math's a bit off.

I'd be happy if that was the reason she asked.

Why should food stamps pay for junk food?
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....story.html

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a D.C.-based nonprofit, has proposed limiting SNAP purchases to whole grains; fresh, frozen or low-sodium canned vegetables; beans; and fruits. This meal plan would supply 65 percent less fat than the average American diet and twice the fiber, according to the committee.

No doubt such limitations would entail a change in habits for many SNAP recipients ? perhaps too much change. Fish and poultry, as well as lean red meat, should probably be included. But even if SNAP paid only for healthy stuff, recipients would still be free to use their own cash for other products. The point is to increase the amount of real nutrition per taxpayer dollar.

Obama Will Use Nixon-Era Law to Fight Climate Change
    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/.....hange.html

President Barack Obama is preparing to tell all federal agencies for the first time that they should consider the impact on global warming before approving major projects, from pipelines to highways. The result could be significant delays for natural gas- export facilities, ports for coal sales to Asia, and even new forest roads, industry lobbyists warn.

"It's got us very freaked out," said Ross Eisenberg, vice president of the National Association of Manufacturers, a Washington-based group that represents 11,000 companies such as Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) and Southern Co. (SO) The standards, which constitute guidance for agencies and not new regulations, are set to be issued in the coming weeks, according to lawyers briefed by administration officials.

        1. Ted S.   12 years ago

The precautionary principle needs to be invoked for all prospective legislation/regulation.

          1. Virginian   12 years ago

That's not how it works Ted. The precautionary principle is invoked when it benefits them, and ignored when it doesn't. So it's proper to use it to enforce sweeping changes to fight global warming, but it's not proper to object to these sweeping changes in the name of the precautionary principle.

          2. R C Dean   12 years ago

Has anybody applied the precautionary principle to the precautionary principle?

They did provide 'proof'. Their scientifically arrived at religious documents say so.

It's ironic that Margaret Thatcher's cute little idea to help stick a knife in the coal miners' unions by giving money to a bunch of superstitious 'prophets' has spawned a religion whose capacity to mulct money out of people who desperately want a religion that is scientific must make the scientologists green with envy.

Sabato and Kondik: The Early Line on the 2014 Midterms
The Obama goal is to regain the House, but holding the Senate is no sure thing.
    http://online.wsj.com/article/.....on_LEADTop

President Obama's greatest setback to date has been the 2010 midterm elections. Gains that Republicans scored in the House and Senate still circumscribe his agenda. It is no surprise, then, that the Obama White House wants to achieve something no other president has ever done: Retake full control of Congress in a midterm.

The party of an incumbent president traditionally loses seats in midterm elections. The usual strategy is simply to minimize the damage. Yet Mr. Obama and many Democrats are so buoyed by national polls and the buzz from the November election that they sense a chance to make history by holding their 10-seat Senate majority (counting the two independents who caucus with them) and picking up the needed 17 House seats. That would clear the way for Democratic legislative aims.

The Story Behind the Man Who was Killed in the Famous "Saigon Execution" Photo
    http://www.todayifoundout.com/.....ion-photo/

Perhaps one of the most iconic images to come out of the Vietnam War (see photo here), this photo depicts a uniformed South Vietnamese officer shooting a prisoner in the head. When you look into it, however, there is much more to this photograph than first meets the eye. There is an undeniable brutality to this photo, but even Eddie Adams ? who won a Pulitzer Prize for capturing this shot ? later admitted that it didn't tell the whole story and he stated that he wished he hadn't taken it at all.

Yeah, and considering they caught him red handed at a mass grave with women and children in it, I'm surprised he made it as far as he did.

It is interesting to know the story of the victim from that picture. I remember using that picture for a project in a High School history class.

The author/photographer is now acting like their is much ambiguity to the story, but the context doesn't change the story too much IMO. It was still a cold blooded killing of a prisoner, regardless of how many people he killed.

      1. Brett L   12 years ago

There's a pretty big difference between summary execution in accordance with the Geneva Convention and other articles of war conduct and random execution.

U.S. still paying Civil War veterans' families
Review shows World War II's compensation figures didn't peak until 1991
    http://www.desmoinesregister.c.....s-families

The Civil War payments are going to two children of veterans ? one in North Carolina and one in Tennessee ? each for $876 per year.

Surviving spouses can qualify for lifetime benefits when troops from current wars have a service-linked death. Children under the age of 18 can also qualify, and those benefits are extended for a lifetime if the person is permanently incapable of self-support due to a disability before the age of 18.

1950 was 85 years after the end of the Civil War. Those fuckers must have been super old. I thought 15-16 was about as young as any fighters were on either side.

            1. John   12 years ago

Both were in their late 90s. And both were drummer boys who were like 15 in 1864.

The guy my mother met was this tall very gruff looking old man who still drove a horse and buggy in the 1940s (this was a small town). He had been a drummer boy in the Army of the Potomac in 1864 65. Born around 1849 or so and nearly a hundred then. Being a kid, it was only after she got older and the guy was gone that my mother realized just how amazing that was.

My father met one at his grade school in the early 50s and he was over a hundred. So yeah, they were really old and really young when they fought and it was more like 65 years ago. But still.

He was a tough old bastard. He really was the most terrifying person I have ever met, at least to a seven year old kid. He came back pretty screwed up from the war. My uncles tell me that he once told them that most of the people he shot as a sniper were 12 and 13 year old kids the Germans were using as runners. He never married and never had kids. Came home with his health shot and screwed up from shooting kids and he was only 19 or 20 at the time. Lived another 60+ years with bad health and those memories.

Robert Menendez donor courted President Obama, Harry Reid

But Melgen wasn't happy with the return on his investment ? co-hosting required the maximum $30,400 donation to the DSCC ? according to a source who travels in the same Miami political circles.

"He had mentioned to me once that he had given all this money to go to an Obama fundraiser, and Obama didn't even give him the time of day," said the source, who didn't want to be identified revealing the contents of private conversations. "He went up to talk to him, and he felt very slighted by the president. He was pretty angry."

In Kentucky, prominent Democrats wooing Alison Lundergan Grimes, not Ashley Judd

With fears growing in some Democratic quarters over Judd's potential candidacy, some prominent Democrats in the Bluegrass State are beginning to set their sights on 34-year-old Alison Lundergan Grimes, the Kentucky secretary of state. Among Grimes's attributes: She lacks political baggage since she's served barely a year in office, and she hails from a well-connected family influential in Kentucky Democratic politics. But it's not at all certain if she'll jump into the race.

multi-player FPS. Larger maps than COD, and you can use vehicles. Very fun stuff.

            I liked BF2 more than BF3, though.

            1. Jordan   12 years ago

BF2 or BC2? Bad Company 2 was the pinnacle of the Battlefield series, imo.

              1. Virginian   12 years ago

BC2 was ok. I played it for a long time, mainly because I mastered the guided AT launcher, and could take down choppers, boats, tanks, etc with criminal ease. Very fun.

Each of the games had their good points. BF2 had great mod support, but the base game has not aged as well. BF2142 has excellent maps and a very cool setting, but was limited by the engine. BC2 was a lot of fun, but lacked a lot of the deeper gameplay BF2 and 2142 had. BF3 is a blast, but I miss the structure of the commander and squad system Bf2 and 2142 had. I play in a community, and there is nothing quite as fun as getting a bunch of people clicking together in organized fashion and overcoming the other side.

              2. Matrix   12 years ago

I liked BC and BC2. Destructible environments are a great addition to the game. However, there were things about BF2 that were better, especially with the expansion packs.

BF3 is still good, though. I just have not played it in forever because my internet SUCKS!

                1. Jordan   12 years ago

One thing that I feel is underappreciated about the Battlefield series is the sound design. These games have the absolute best sound effects and sound engine I've ever heard.

And one thing I loved, and which BF3 unfortunately ditched, is that armies actually spoke in their native languages.

                  1. Virginian   12 years ago

Seriously. All the German and Arabic I know is totally useless because it's things like "enemy tank spotted!" and "Grenade!"

          2. Jordan   12 years ago

Multiplayer FPS. You can run around on foot, drive tanks, fly choppers and jets, etc. Pretty much non-stop mayhem on giant maps.

            1. Bobarian   12 years ago

In my experience, you can CRASH choppers and jets, but flying them, not so much.

              1. Virginian   12 years ago

I can make the chopper dance. Problem is when some idiot hops in the gunners seat and just randomly shoots at nothing.

        2. R C Dean   12 years ago

there is not better value in entertainment then a good multiplayer game.

So true. If MS does this, though, I will be moving over to PS or PC gaming. Although I wouldn't be surprised if PS does the same thing on their next iteration.

          1. Matrix   12 years ago

PS4 is not supposed to be as onerous. They do look to be pushing mostly digital distribution though (ie, trying to get rid of the used game market), but they haven't confirmed making people buy new games only or require you to be connected at all times.

I remember when the PSN was down for over a month. I could play games, just not online. I don't want to have to deal with not getting to even PLAY my games because M$ can't get their shit together. I'm already burned because of the SimCity fiasco. Imagine that on a whole platform. NFW do I want to deal with that!

    3. anon   12 years ago

Wait... so Xbox is now basically pc master race lite?

Why would I -ever- play an xbox game over a PC game?

      shitty consoles.

    4. Jordan   12 years ago

Welp. If this is true, I won't be buying any next gen consoles.

I was already burned by Sony on the PS3 because the PS3's wifi fucking sucks and the PSN security was a goddamned joke. Who the fuck stores passwords in plain text?

And the Wii-U? Haha! Another stupid gimmick console.

  29. sloopyinca   12 years ago

If at first you don't succeed: try, try again.

Don't worry, buddy. You'll finally kill somebody sooner or later. It's not like they're gonna fire you when the taxpayers keep forking over money for the settlements.

Even a blind hog finds an acorn every once in a while. (Or at least half an acorn)

Justice Dept finds Miami-Dade police made wrongful arrest, conducted illegal search. Officers to be held personally liable in civil action. They were, of course, not charged with false arrest or false imprisonment for their actions, though.

    1. John   12 years ago

Personally liable is a bitch though. Civil rights judgements are not dischargable in bankruptcy. They are screwed.

      1. sloopyinca   12 years ago

Good. Fuck those assholes. It's not illegal to park a vehicle on your private property and pull a tarp over it. Why the fuck is having a piece of paper over the license plate a reason to enter upon her property and demand a goddamn thing?

I hope these fucks have to pay a fortune, but I'd be willing to bet that they'll drag the city into the settlement and the taxpayers get stuck with the bill. I also bet these officers never get fired or face a moment's discipline.

        1. John   12 years ago

Absolutely. I hope the person gets a seven figure judgement and those assholes wind up spending the rest of their lives living under a bridge.

          1. sloopyinca   12 years ago

Well, it is federal, so the chance of a judge making the officers pay it back in $5/year increments is decreased.

I still expect there to be a settlement where "the department does not admit wrongdoing by the officers" and the taxpayers get put on the hook for the damages.

            1. John   12 years ago

I don't think so. At least with federal employees, if you get a ruling that you are personally liable, DOJ can no longer defend you. They can only defend people who act within the scope of employment. Losing immunity means losing the government defending you.

              1. sloopyinca   12 years ago

I think you underestimate the strength of union contracts and the FOP strongarming a co-defendant (in this case the Miami-Dade Police Department and the City of Miami) into footing the bill for their officers' malfeasance.

After all, do you see where the officers lost their jobs or faced any disciplinary actions? Nope. And that tells me the department and city by extension give their tacit approval for these types of actions. Therefore, it's fair to assume that they will be happy to pay the settlement pass on the cost of the settlement to the taxpayers.

                1. John   12 years ago

They won't be able to. Personal liability means just that.

    2. Matrix   12 years ago

She was in a parked vehicle. The article did not state if it was running.

Does she have to produce a licenses if she's on private property anyway? I do not believe she does. Even if she's just walking around town, she does not have to produce identification. She can identify herself verbally.

And once she said she did not consent to a search, that should have ended it. They had no right to search the vehicle without her present, especially after she refused the search and they had no warrant.

Looking or being suspicious is NOT a crime, nor justification for probable cause. Glad the judges saw it that way.

I hope they lose their shirts over this.

  35. Shine on, Nikki Diamond   12 years ago

    This is...interesting:

Calling out "bingo" when you don't have one can get you in trouble in northern Kentucky.

    Ask Austin Whaley.

The 18-year-old man was recently sentenced to refrain from saying "bingo" for six months.

That's because he and several other teens did that at a Covington bingo hall.

An off-duty police officer working security cited Whaley for second-degree disorderly conduct.

The affidavit stated the prank disrupted the game for several minutes and alarmed patrons.

    Patrons were ALARMED!

    1. John   12 years ago

I can understand that. If a gaggle of teenagers showed up and started yelling Bingo randomly, it would totally screw up the game. It was disorderly conduct.

      1. Shine on, Nikki Diamond   12 years ago

Well, it was reasonably disorderly conduct, it's more the sentence that's bizarre.

        1. John   12 years ago

Yeah. But it was the judge telling them to stop harassing old people. better that than jail.

        2. Night Elf Mohawk   12 years ago

I read it as the judge saying, "Quit being a tool and get out of here."

      2. R C Dean   12 years ago

Borderline fraud, really, if there were prizes being awarded and their false claims of bingotude caused other players to clear their cards.

        1. mnarayan   12 years ago

          Doesn't fraud require gain?

    2. sarcasmic   12 years ago

Q: How do you get a sweet little old lady to drop the F-bomb?

A: Get another sweet little old lady to yell "Bingo!"

    3. sloopyinca   12 years ago

Private function. They created a disturbance. According to Tulpa's understanding of the NAP, the other patrons even had a right to shoot them dead.

Seriously, though, the sentence seems just to me.

      1. Shine on, Nikki Diamond   12 years ago

Sort of just. Not if you take into account making sure he carries it out. What if he whispers "bingo" to himself before bed every night? I mean, it's not like a terrible thing, but it's absurd.

        1. Night Elf Mohawk   12 years ago

I think it was supposed to be. "Look, they were right and you were acting like an ass." It's like cases that give $1 in damages. It was symbolic... and better than fining him or making him do community service.

          1. Virginian   12 years ago

Eh, I think a modest fine might be appropriate. If you were asked to leave, but didn't, then wouldn't you be trespassing?

Community service can be overdone in terms of hours, but I think him spending one Saturday afternoon scrubbing graffiti would not be a great injustice.

            1. Night Elf Mohawk   12 years ago

Yeah, I don't think a modest fine or scrubbing some graffiti would necessarily have been inappropriate, either, but I think that would be at the harsh end of what would be appropriate. Something like this, or banning him from the venue for six months, are more appropriate, though, imo.

Now, if he's asked to leave and doesn't, he's moved from being someone trying to be funny to something a little more serious.

An Al-Qaeda affiliate claimed responsibility for bombings in Iraq yesterday that killed at least 65 people and wounded 200.

If I lived in a hut in Pakistan or Yemen, I'd think twice before attending a neighbor's wedding today.

    1. John   12 years ago

So we should just let AlQaeda bomb anyone they like?

      1. Citizen Nothing   12 years ago

        That's EXACTLY what he said!

        1. John   12 years ago

The what do weddings have to do with it then? Clearly if bombing AlQaeda involves risking the life of innocent people, we shouldn't do it right? We might kill a kid or something. That sounds like letting them do what they like doesn't it? We wouldn't want any blood on our hands or anything.

          1. sloopyinca   12 years ago

C'mon, John. You're smarter than this.

My point was that I fully expect our great leader (especially while in Israel) to use an incident in Iraq to exact his personal brand of (extrajudicial) justice on people several thousand miles away from the bombings that have absolutely no discernible connection to it. And I expect him to do so without thought of collateral damage, without explaining who or what the targets are and what they have done to be considered a real and credible threat, and without the tacit approval of the governments of the sovereign nations he is bombing without a declaration of war.

            1. LTC(ret) John   12 years ago

"without the tacit approval of the governments of the sovereign nations he is bombing"

Oh, I think the Paks are tacitly approving (as long as it is in the NW Frontier/Waziristan/Tribal Areas) whilst the Yemeni government is actually suggesting targets/using us as a hammer against domestic foes.

              1. sloopyinca   12 years ago

The Pakistani government raises hell every time we murderdrone somebody there. And their complaint is always based on our lack of respect for their national sovereignty.

The Yemeni government gets wishy-washy, and are ok with us assassinating their political dissidents for them. Of course, being their mercenaries hardly complies with the constitutional requirements for a declaration of war, but to a lawyer that works for the government, I would imagine that's of little concern.

                1. LTC(ret) John   12 years ago

I think the Paks complain for domestic consumption - I remember talking with Pak Army officers about the area we drone...they used run in a regiment of artillery and shell places for 3 days whenever the "Pathans" got uppity, just to remind them they were part of Pakistan. They want us out, they could kick us out in a heartbeat - but they like the graft and theft they can engage in with the ISAF supplies running through Karachi and up to AF. Once the supplies stop running, we'll see if they kick us out.

Yeah, I don't remember any part of my oath as an officer being related to service as a hit man for a third world despotism, but maybe that has been added since I was commissioned. Bleah.

It's been a rough couple of weeks for the Hooters ball girls who patrol the foul lines at Philadelphia Phillies spring games. Apparently, these ladies are drawn to embarrassment and danger like men are drawn to hot pants and chicken wings.

I haven't been drawn to Hooters since I was 16 and figured out it was a scam.

Quite soon, we will want a few testers to give their opinions on a few of these. If any of you are game, I'll be asking in a few weeks to a month if we can ship a jar or two to get your opinions.
