Vote counting in Kenya's tense presidential election ground almost to a halt on Wednesday as a costly electronic counting system was abandoned after servers overloaded.

An embattled electoral commission was forced to rely on paper tallies, considerably slowing announcement of results. Tension began to rise as some of the main protagonists in the closely contested poll began to trade allegations of foul play.
