In Search for Rampaging Former Officer, SoCal Police Declare War on Pickup Trucks
Open fire on innocent people
A former Los Angeles Police Department officer, clearly mentally ill and believing he had been wrongly dismissed from the department after reporting a fellow officer for allegedly abusing a suspect (she was ultimately cleared), posted an apparent manifesto online before beginning a rampage that has left three dead so far.
His target list is huge and focused on law enforcement, resulting in one huge manhunt across Southern California and Las Vegas.
It also, unfortunately, resulted in two cases of police just opening fire on trucks that looked like the vehicle the shooter, Christopher Dorner, had been driving. Via LAist:
The first officer-involved shooting happened at about 5:20 a.m. in the 19500 block of Redbeam Avenue in Torrance, according to the L.A. Times. Two women delivering newspapers in a truck were struck by gunfire by L.A. police detectives from the Hollywood division. One woman was shot in the hand and the other in the back, Jesse Escochea, who captured video of the victims being treated, told the Times. Both victims were transported to a hospital.
The Times describes the crime scene: "After the shooting, the blue pickup was riddled with bullet holes and what appeared to be newspapers lay in the street alongside."
The second incident occurred at Flagler Lane and Beryl Street about 5:45 a.m. and involved Torrance police. No injuries were reported.
They had no connection to the case. We'll see if any disciplinary actions follow. That should be interesting, given a huge chunk of Dorner's diatribe was about how the police abuse the citizens they're supposed to protect. (Also, lots of arguments for gun control – using himself as an actual example)
The burned remains of Dorner's truck have since been found in Big Bear, a mountain community east of the Los Angeles area known for ski resorts.

He says in the manifesto that he is in possession of a Barrett .50 caliber, which is illegal in CA. Kind of undermines his position on gun control...
He also seems to be implying that he couldn't have gone on this rampage if the AWB were still in force. I guess he never was trained on how to switch mags?
They're not illegal - the law prohibits their sale (after 2004) and requires existing owners to register the weapon.
And of course there is the usual "law enforcement exemption", because cops really need anti-materiel rifles to stop all the armored vehicles the gangs run around in.
If he possessed the weapon before jan 2005 (and registered it) then he could legally have one.
I don't doubt that he legally acquired it because he used the phrase "As you know I also own Barrett .50's", which implies that he registered his before the registration period closed.
By saying they are illegal, I should have clarified that nobody can get a Barrett or any other .50 BMG in CA anymore, nor can they bring them into the state from elsewhere.
Still not true. It only bans .50 BMG rifles, ie, fired from the shoulder with a stock and all that. The pedestal or tripod mounted ones with spade grips are still legal.
Outstanding! Now I can get a WWII-esque AAA quad-mount of Ma-deuces in the back of a Ford Raptor kinda like a remote weapon station. Get outta the left-lane slow pokes!!!! Ratta-tat-tat can do it like that!!!!
(Sarcasm.)
I've seen one of those at Knob Creek. It's pretty wild. As long as the guns mounted on it are transferables, all it takes is money.
'Course this guy *should* know that this ban only applies to rifles firing .50 BMG - there are a couple of rifles that fire rounds as big (or nearly so) that the ban doesn't cover.
Most police are incompetent.
troll-o-meter: .01
don't have enough info to agree/disagree with the poster's asssertion...
but, what would you call officers that open fire without any aggressive action on the part of their targets?
but, what would you call officers that open fire without any aggressive action on the part of their targets?
Hey, maybe they weren't specifically trained not to open fire on people they had yet to identify.
+1
Hey, procedures were improperly implemented. A new policy will be created with procedures and training to prevent this tragedy from occuring in the future.
Oh, thank goodness. And since this will be a training moment, these women will not have been shot in vain after all.
Well, they weren't shot in vain anyway - they were shot for officer safety.
+100
So if my friend and I had been the ones to open fire on that truck, what do you think would happen to us? What do you think will happen to the cops?
What do you think will happen to the cops?
What difference, at this point, does it make?
If you and a friend are a cop, nothing, and rightfully so.
If you live in a civilized society, you voluntarily give up certain special rights and authority to the police. In short, it is not in any way hypocritical for them to be free to do something which you yourself are not free to do. Otherwise they would not be able to do their jobs.
It's tragic if anyone dies from the mistake, but it's more important that the officers take the shot without having to overthink it if they reasonably believe they can end a rampage which may involve further slaughter.
You know, I got more logical shit off of Terry Schiavo's blog.
DONDERRRRROOOOOOOOOO
Nothing says freedom like a protected class of nobility with special privileges and exemptions from the law.
Voluntarily? Oh is this the magical "social contract" that no one will show me my signed copy of?
Begging the question.
Except that's not what cops do. We've seen it time and time again. When there is an actual dangerous threat, they're worthless fucking cowards. See all the cops milling around Columbine for example. When they're opening fire on two Asian ladies in a pickup truck, then they're Billy Badass.
I can't tell if this is very clever satire or gibbering idiocy.
Idiot.
Uh, no - Peelian Principles of Policing.
Number 7
". . .the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent upon every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence."
Dude. F--- the hell off and stop calling yourself a libertarian, you sick statist pig.
Seriously. That's just a sickening amount of boot licking. You know Dondero they have clubs and whole websites where you can lick all the boots you want. If you're a good boy you might even get paddled. Let's keep the D/s play in the private spaces where it belongs. That way no one gets shot or Tased or left in a cell to die of thirst.
I do NOT give up any rights to the police.
You are not in charge of a damn thing.
You are a civil servant paid to enforce laws passed by elected representatives of the people. NO ONE gives up any rights to you.
The state serves individuals, not the other way around. When you work for the state, you're the help.
If by most you mean 99% of them, then you are correct.
clearly mentally ill
So, it is Dr Scott Shackford, psychiatrist. Why are you working for a cheap outfit like reason?
From Drudgereport
Supports gun control, Obama and Piers Morgan...
I don't know SIV based on this he's clearly mentally ill!
He's also a Tim Tebow and Ellen Degeneres fan
link to full manifesto w/ no redactions
Ellen Degeneres, continue your excellent contribution to entertaining America and bringing the human factor to entertainment. You changed the perception of your gay community and how we as Americans view the LGBT community. I congratulate you on your success and opening my eyes as a young adult, and my generation to the fact that you are know different from us other than who you choose to love.
Tebow, I really wanted to see you take charge of an offense again and the game. You are not a good QB by todays standards, but you are a great football player who knows how to lead a team and WIN. You will be "Tebowing" when you reach your next team. I have faith in you. Get out of that circus they call the Jets and away from the reality TV star, Rex Ryan, and Mark Rapist Sanchez.
My apologies to Dr Shackford. His diagnosis was correct. Exhibit "A"
I like how he lists at least two porn stars. Dude you take that shit to the grave.
"We'll see if any disciplinary actions follow."
C'mon Scott. Jokes are in really bad taste here.
Why do you think it was a joke?
Because nobody could seriously believe that discipline is a possibility?
How ironic. We long for cops willing to break down the blue wall and turn in other officers who commit crimes, and when one finally does, not only is he fired for it, he turns out to be batshit crazy.
Hint: the majority of them are batshit crazy. That's why they seek out a job that lets them commit acts of violence with near-impunity.
I'll agree that the majority of them are authoritarian assholes who simply like weilding power over others. But like any other subset of the general population, the odds of one writing a manifesto then going on a rampage are slim.
Name me a "profession" that has a higher rate of violent acts against innocent people.
Politicians?
The Jew Politician is using The Black Police as muscle against you. And you are left there helpless. Well, what are you going to do about it, Whitey Civilian? Just sit there?
This comment smells of mimeograph fluid.
Context.
Ah Henry Gibson....you are missed!
I hate Illinois Nazis.
Name me a "profession" that has a higher rate of violent acts against innocent people.
There are none, I'm sure. But that doesn't make them crazy; they're simply doing what comes naturally when people are handed power, with little accountability, over others. I do take your point, though, about what kind of person seeks that sort of power in the first place.
Drone pilot?
"He said innocent, dumbass."
/Cytotoxic
Well, they say he's batshit crazy. The only thing he admitted to was depression.
If half of what he says is true ... well, what exactly does justify a violent revolution anyhow? My slim experience with the LAPD suggests he may be the only one who is not crazy.
Hopefully he flees to the desert away from populated areas. Still can't believe he lived so close to where I went to high school.
Where's that? I went to high school in San Pedro.
According to the news I've read he lived in La Palma, a small bedroom community in northern Orange County next to Cerritos and Buena Park.
His address was on a street right next to a high school and middle school.
Mira Costa here.
Is anybody else in SoCal right now? I'm here and I'm waiting on EDG to come pick me up so we can go drinking in LBC. Any of you others are more than welcome to join us.
I am, but have to take the crumbeater home this evening.
Sounds fun but I have work later tonight. Still down for a Hit and Run Dodger game though.
Dodger game sounds decent. I live about 5 miles from the stadium (though I hate them! Go Halos!).
Cool. I'll start trying to get it organized then. We were looking at the first weekend series, right?
Yeah that should work for me, they play the Pirates that weekend.
The thing about a Dodger game is that you don't show up until the third inning, you leave after the sixth, and the time between is spent looking around to see who's there and who sees you. The actual baseball part isn't even secondary.
Well, if anybody decides to head out, email me (kenspicer111@gmail.com) and we'll let you know where we are.
I would if I didn't have to watch the kids tonight... EDG knows food, so I assume he knows beer too...
Just make sure to take a vehicle that's NOT a blue pickup truck...
I hope he doesn't drive a Nissan Titan
Makes sense. As we were informed by a CA police chief today, cops don't carry guns to protect people, they carry them to intimidate. Guns aren't defensive weapons.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?f.....dPM#t=390s
Wow, what these guys want is a return to feudalism where they get to be the knights/samurai that are the only ones permitted to carry weapons.
Well, I don't think he meant to, but he nailed the true meaning of the second amendment. Guns=power. If the people have guns, it is a sign that the people are in charge. If we are disarmed, then our "betters" have the power. It's why the earliest gun prohibitions were aimed at armed blacks.
People say the 2A is to resist tyranny--and are usually countered with "how can you fight the US army?" claptrap, but the meaning is deeper than that. It goes to the psychology of power. Free men have guns, slaves do not.
how can you fight the US army?
Fascist parties don't start out with the armies, they start out as gangs of thugs, but end up with them when everyone else is disarmed.
WOW. Even the anti-gun people standing behind him didn't look pleased with what he was saying. He doesn't speak like the sharpest tool in the shed.
Holy shit this thing is playing out like the Rambo movie. He's in the mountains. Probably setting up boobie traps right now. Watching cops approach.
Astonishingly, at least the first few readers' comments to the New York Times article about this incident read like comments here. Bet that wouldn't have been the case ten or twelve years ago.

Some interesting comments at that:
Bruce Durgess
So Cal
Well - the action against Dorner by reporting the corruption is why the entire Fullerton PD could watch the video of their officers beating an innocent homeless person to death and do nothing. The entire FPD was thusly "bad apples". You just can't report on each other; it's worse than organized crime. And now the various PD's in SOCAL have shot up at least two other vehicles just because they were a similar color to Dorners; not even the same model, just blue. Take a look at the huge number of bullet holes in the truck that two newspaper delivery ladies were driving.
Interesting indeed. The mood has changed.
He reports abuse by his fellow officers, and in return they destroy his life.
This is what happens when a good cop tries to do the right thing.
This is why there are no good cops.
How do you know that:
1. That his fellow officers actually committed the abuses he alleges?
2. That he is a good cop?
Is it because it meshes well with the typical hipster-fashionable view of various nefarious conspiracies straight out of a Hollywood production?
We'll see if any disciplinary actions follow.
Haaaaaaaaaaa ha ha ha ha ha! Hoooooooo ho ho ho ho!
That's good.
That's really good.
Oh man.
Too funny.
Not that I am trying to defend this guy's actions - murdering an unarmed woman (and I guess her fiance) is simply flat out wrong and murder. But his manifesto doesn't really sound like someone crazy, but someone pushed too far by the LAPD.
You can kill people and not be mentally ill is my point. Cops apparently ruined his life, he's seeking payback. Seems rational to me. I think it's sad that it came to this though. That the only way he could get attention to the corrupt in the LAPD is by going on a murderous rampage.
I guess by today's standards, the founding fathers would be considered mentally ill for rising up against England.
If he had gone after cops, that would be one thing. Cops have guns and backup on call. Especially if the cops who he says railroaded him through perjury and corruption actually did what he claims, well...when there is no way to get justice through the system, someone might work outside it.
But killing that woman just because he thought her dad fucked him over...yeah that doesn't make any sense.
See the question is, what if he had been smart? He could have picked off cops for weeks or even months, and then when all the media attention was on "Who is waging war against the LAPD?" he could have revealed himself. Also, he should have run his little manifesto through spellcheck.
You may not like it, but it makes sense.
By killing the daughter he has hurt the man more than if he had killed him, and he has ended that man's line.
This.
It's fucked up, but it makes perfect sense.
My impression was that he's very much out of his mind. He tries to paint himself as some sort of Jason Bourne character. I think he is out of touch with reality. Also, I very much doubt his claims of "secret agent man" skills.
lol, stupid cops are skeeeered lol

The complete manifesto, including its support of gun control and an assault weapons ban is here:

Most cops in California aren't UCLA grads. Nope. All cops need to go law school are something.
I'm not particularly pleased that he claims to be an owner of several lawfully obtained NFA weapons (sound suppressors and at least one SBR).
