CO Towns Impose Bans on Marijuana Businesses

Erie and Broomfield this week each moved to temporarily ban marijuana-related businesses in the wake of Colorado's Amendment 64.

The Erie Board of Trustees approved a moratorium on the licensing of any recreational marijuana business in town.

The moratorium, which took effect immediately, will last through Oct. 1.

In Broomfield, the City Council approved, on first reading, a 2-year ban on marijuana-related businesses. That ban, if approved following a Feb. 26 public hearing, includes a sunset clause, so it only would last through January 2015. That clause would allow voters to decide whether to permanently keep the ban or allow the marijuana industry to move into the city.
