Soldier Stationed in Hawaii Shot and Killed by Cops
Incident started at 4am outside a nightclub in Honolulu
The Army confirmed an enlisted soldier belonging to the 25th Infantry Division was shot and killed by police officers in Honolulu. From the Star Advertiser:
Police officers shot and killed a Schofield Barracks soldier who apparently drove recklessly through the streets of Waikiki and was shot by responding officers on Ala Wai Boulevard early this morning.
Three officers were treated for minor injuries and then released, police said at a news conference today.
The incident began just before 4 a.m. and involved two shooting scenes, one on Kuhio Avenue near Nahua Street, and the final location on Ala Wai Boulevard near Seaside Avenue.
Police say the incident began when cops noticed the soldier speeding the wrong way down a street. They say the soldier tried to hit an officer with his truck (the first shooting scene) and that afterward the soldier rammed his truck into several patrol vehicles, with five being damaged. The soldier was taken to the hospital after being shot and died there. Two officers were placed on three-days administrative leave. No comment yet from the Army except to confirm the individual was an enlisted soldier.

This sounds like the beginning of about four different episodes of the original Hawaii Five-O. But in those they don't kill the soldier right away because that would ruin the plot.
I like the new Kono better.
I think this whole thing took about 30 minutes to go down, so with commercial breaks and long credit-sequences being the norm on network TV, this would have been enough to fill an hour slot.
Great idea! They could even run a clock in the corner like that M*A*S*H episode.
We could get Johnny Depp and Christopher Walken to be in it.*
*I always thought Nick Of Time was a decent film but the critics disagree.
I'm thinking Kiefer Sutherland.
"Tell me where the recklessly driving soldier is now or I'll shoot the other knee!!!"
As long as the cops were aware of what they were shooting at as well as what was behind it, I have no problem with this. Sounds like the guy was trying to commit suicide and he was rather successful in that endeavor.

When you've lost sloopy..
Um...why exactly is this H&R material?

Agree. Let's talk about a kidnapping, false-imprisoning, rapist cop gets to resign and face weaker charges than a regular human being would if they put a woman in the back of their car against her will and drove her to a remote location and forced her to perform a sex act on them, all the while with a gun on their person.
I wonder if dunphy knows this guy because it's around Seattle.
There is no double standard for cops, and cops are often treated more harshly. I have this on good authority from dunphy.
If this guy was behaving in such a way that you or I would've been justified in shooting him (and it sounds like he was), then the cops would be justified in shooting him.
Next.
We need gun control for these violent maniacs
as former hawaii cop, i wonder if i know any of the guys involved. hawaii cops don't get into shootings very often. the culture in general involves a LOT of fists but not a lot of shooting.
it;s kind of refreshing that people in hawaii don't resort to gunfire nearly as often as on the mainland to solve disputes. otoh, the "way of the fist" is highly respected and kids in hawaii grow up street tough. fistfighting is way more a part of the culture than in many parts of the mainland.
i saw this reflected in policework there. far more people wanted a fight before they went to jail, but it was largely good natured, just a way to impress the family - don't go down w.o a fight. it was expected the arrestee would put on a little show for his ohana and most of the time we wouldn't even charge him with resisting, just give him the aikido dump to the ground and handcuffing.
granted, THIS case SOUNDS like a justified shoot, but who knows? i agree with the previous poster i'm not sure why it's H&R material. i'm not seeing the nut punch here

I dunno. Do you know the rapist I pointed out above?
Or do you know this other fine Seattle police officer who assaults cuffed civilians?

Must be somethng in the water in Seattle. A year ago, there was a story posted here by someone about a Seattle cop who threatened two college kids that he was going to "make stuff up" to charge them with, even though the two guys were innocent of any wrongdoing. That cop turned out to be an ex-roommate of mine, and a good friend (though we hadn't spoke in several years). When I knew him, he was the nicest, most easygoing, nonaggressive person you could ever hope to meet.
Power corrupts, and whatnot.
Officer Powell? Bald, chubby? I thought he worked with Bruce on that Nakatomi mess.
Do they also put pomade in their hair, wear leather jackets with the name of their gang on the back, and break out into song and dance while fighting?

I tried to click the "Like" button, but I realized I was at the wrong site for that.
Needs more facts before it can be determined if this another police summary execution or a good shoot.
Based on the blogpost, seems almost routine. I mean, as routine as it can be without a family pet being killed.
And seeing it was the 25th ID, I would wager a strong probability the soldier was raging drunk and stupid rather than merely stupid.
Stupid punk cops. Stuff like this makes me rejoice everytime I hear on the news about some stupid cop getting clipped in the line of duty!
