A Saudi court has sentenced Egyptian designer Nagla Wafa to five years in prison and 500 lashes for fraud. Wafa was accused by a Saudi princess of cashing a check from a joint business venture but not following through on a promise to start a restaurant together.

In Singapore I saw a guy come back from 25 lashes. A week later he was still in hospital in danger of dying.

    1. Whiterun Guard   12 years ago

Yeah, but those lashes were with a rattan cane, nestcepas?

The Saudi ones will be much more humane, despite the fact that she'll get 20 times as many.

Also I can't get to the article, does it say what kind of restaurant it was supposed to be?

      1. Bardas Phocas   12 years ago

        I hope it has bacon.

        1. Whiterun Guard   12 years ago

Bacon flavored vodka, served by a bikini-clad whore.

MEh. Only one word in that sentence sounds remotely appealing.

If it was permissible to judge other cultures, right now I'd be all over Saudi Arabia. And Egypt, for that matter.

    1. Groovus Maximus   12 years ago

It's perfectly permissible to judge other cultures. I do it every day here.-)

Now whether my opinions have any sway is another matter entirely...

      1. Fist of Etiquette   12 years ago

        That's a HIPAA violation.

        1. Groovus Maximus   12 years ago

          Not in UKR.-)

          1. Fist of Etiquette   12 years ago

            In Ukraine HIPAA violate you.

            1. Groovus Maximus   12 years ago

Not quite. But I do have to admit, regulatory compliance is a pain in the kernodelly.

    2. Chris Mallory   12 years ago

Judging other cultures will make you lose your Cosmotarian Card. According to them, every other nation on Earth is just filled with hard working immigrants willing to do the jobs that soft lazy Americans won't do.

      1. DJF   12 years ago

That is why we need to bring these Saudi Judges to the US and put them on the Supreme Court. What could go wrong?

    3. VG Zaytsev   12 years ago

If it was permissible to judge other cultures, right now I'd be all over Saudi Arabia. And Egypt, for that matter.

      Why?

It sounds like a perfectly libertarian criminal sentence for a thief.

Having just ordered Why Jazz Happened, I read the review of it yesterday and like a fool am watching the Canadian bukkake bomb video Heroic Mulatto posted. I bid you a fond farewell as I am now laughing myself to death

Happy New Year to you doc (well, in 41 minutes it will be. Or already is, if you're Tongan or a Kiwi)

        1. Groovus Maximus   12 years ago

My list to Ded Moroz included the Queen Mum going tits up so Charles will be crowned. Since Catholic Santy didn't leave a spunky one under my tree, we'll see if Orthodox Santy will.

Fun Fact: In Ukraine, it is customary to adorn the Christmas tree with spider ornaments. It's based on a Ukrainian folk tale about a woman so poor she had not a decoration for the tree; spiders weaved a web on her tree and in the morning sun shone, the webs turned to silver and gold.

          1. invisible furry hand   12 years ago

That's rather charming. I've just finished Vanished Kingdoms, and am now reading Timothy Snyder's Reconstruction of Nations and Bloodlands, so it's nice to hear something about Ukraine that doesn't involve dead brutalised children

Most likely a post hoc explanation for what originally was a solar symbol.

More or less similar things (without a story) occur all over Eastern Europe.

          3. Xenocles   12 years ago

The Queen Mum died years ago, dude. It's a common misconception that the phrase refers to QE2, but it's actually her mother. The title is reserved for a dowager consort, I believe.

            1. Ted S.   12 years ago

I believe you mean Queen Dowager.

QE2 is a Queen Regnant. When George VI was alive, QE2's mom (the Queen Mother) was a Queen Consort. (Why Philip isn't a King Consort but a Prince Consort is something I don't know.) After George's death, the Queen Consort became a Queen Dowager. At least, I think that's how the nomenclature works.

              1. Xenocles   12 years ago

                You're correct, my apology.

My guess as to king/prince is that "king" probably implies regency in a way that "queen" and "prince" don't. Of course, both of those latter two could be regnant titles as well as non-regnant (as in a female monarch or the ruler of a principality), so the clarification is added there.

              2. invisible furry hand   12 years ago

that is correct Ted. Husbands of Queens regnant don't get the title of King (not since Philip II of Spain married Mary I, and he really only got it pursuant to Queen Mary's Marriage Act). The spouses of all subsequent married queens regnant (barring Mary II) have held their own title of prince or been granted one. Prince Consort was invented for Albert and granted by Act of Parliament rather grudgingly

Whoever was responsible for that should have been canned.

Do you want Charles III for the shits and giggles?
