The Free State Project, described by Brian Doherty in these pages two years ago as "an interesting experiment to get 20,000 libertarians to all relocate to New Hampshire to reshape local and state politics in a place where those numbers are politically powerful," has been successful enough to make at least some New Hampshire Democrats declare this ragtag group of fill-in-the-blank-archists as Enemy Number One.
At the progressive site Blue Hampshire last week, a diarist named The Money Magician warned that the 20,000 signature moment (at which point, in theory, those who signed up for the pledge to move to the Live Free or Die State would make good on their promise) could come as early as 2015. "I wish there was some way to repel these people," the Magician lamented.
The interesting comments section ("A libertarian is an Anarchist that is too lazy or too scared to move to Somilia," writes tchair) included this bit from cyndychase, later identified by the Free Keene kids as "District 8 State Representative Cynthia Chase of Keene." Excerpt:
In the opinion of this Democrat, Free Staters are the single biggest threat the state is facing today. There is, legally, nothing we can do to prevent them from moving here to take over the state, which is their openly stated goal. In this country you can move anywhere you choose and they have that same right. What we can do is to make the environment here so unwelcoming that some will choose not to come, and some may actually leave. One way is to pass measures that will restrict the "freedoms" that they think they will find here. Another is to shine the bright light of publicity on who they are and why they are coming. […]
Here in Keene we had a couple show up on Central Square to take part in our weekly Saturday morning peace demonstration. In the course of the conversation they allowed that they were Free Staters considering moving to Keene. The folks on the Square told them in no uncertain terms not to do that because Free Staters are not welcome here. Cheshire County is a welcoming community but not to those whose stated goal is to move in enough ideologues to steal our state, and our way of life.
A friend had a young man from Texas contact her to rent a room she had available. She got in touch with me to ask what to do when he told her he was coming to NH as part of the Free State Project. Here's what she decided to tell him: "I told him that I already rented the room, and that I didn't appreciate him coming here to change our state government, it was an insult to me. That if he wanted to make change to start self examining his own life in a mindful way and stay in Texas to make the changes he wants not come here. And not contact me again."
In what nefarious ways are the Free Staters changing New Hampshire? Getting marijuana growers out of jail by using the rare tactic of jury nullification, among other things.

Yes, you are absolutely correct, Miles. But TLPB was joking, I believe.
Libertarianism is frequently and cartoonishly misrepresented so it has become a game here to preemptively misrepresent our own positions for comedic effect.
The worst misrepresentation of libertarians is that we're humorless. Just saying.
"I told him that I already rented the room, and that I didn't appreciate him coming here to change our state government, it was an insult to me. Isn't that more or less the way segregationists treated freedom riders back during the civil rights struggle?
Most fair housing laws, which progressives adamently support, prohibit discrimination based on political affiliation. Another example of do as I say, not as I do.
So at a peace demonstration they don't want just any person who wants peace, they want those who want peace and who want to use the state use of a gun to give them the goodies they think they deserve.
It's also an organized version of what happened in California, beginning around 1960. Does anyone here remember how reliably "Red" California once was, for many decades? And its change to Blue within the lives of most people alive today? It was the immigrants and transplants from NORTH and EAST of the border, not SOUTH, what did it, I tells ya!
An organized group of people moved to VT with the intention of taking over and dismantling their state government? Please tell me more about this - I can't believe I never heard about it.
There is, legally, nothing we can do to prevent them from moving here to take over the state, which is their openly stated goal. In this country you can move anywhere you choose and they have that same right.
This seems to be a common refrain in twentifirst century America.
It's as if people are frightened and disoriented by change.
See, they weren't changing Vermont, they were just moving there to enjoy the scenery and culture that already existed. Except for those rednecks on the farms. And the farms themselves. But they don't live in the city so they don't really count anyway.
I can't sign the pledge, but I finally signed up as a FSP supporter. I'm too entrenched in my own compound to ever make the move, but I wish the rest of you dangerous libertarians well.
I talk about it with my bf frequently, but for some reason he keeps wanting to move to VT instead of NH. I say "no income tax!"; he says "no CCW permits!" Both are nice, and fingers crossed we'll end up in one or the other in a few years.
Yes, I will never forget no sales tax in NH--not since I was a kid buying cigarettes there and actually had to ask the guy at the gas station if that was really the price.
We're in Chicago, so far away, and it would necessitate him (but not me) getting a different job. Also, it would move him away from family and me closer to family. But we'd both like to leave the city for the country at some point regardless.
I talk about it with my bf frequently, but for some reason he keeps wanting to move to VT instead of NH. I say "no income tax!"; he says "no CCW permits!" Both are nice, and fingers crossed we'll end up in one or the other in a few years.
Build a house with the front door exiting into the other?
Given that I grew up in VT and I have many friends there, I have always looked at relocating and retiring there. But VT is so fucked up and expensive, I'm leaning way more to NH, even though I don't know a soul there and the skiing is not the same.
My friends in Vermont are apparently covered in snow right now. We're just getting rain down here in Boston. I managed to beat the storm out on Christmas.
The one year we had multiple snow storms here, I got my ass to Bermuda for a week of sick days. Sick of snow counts! Only kidding, the last day counted against my hours, but it was so fucking worth it.
Wait till you see NH unemployment, wages, and housing costs!
Compared to where? For example, housing in NH is much more expensive then it is in the South, but New England hasn't suffered the same hits to its economy as in other places in the country, so people have the money to afford it.
Unfortunately, her constituents probably won't mind. They'll pass a seat belt law or some bullshit that only Free Staters will care about and everyone else will celebrate For The Children.
I should point out that Barney & Friends - a show that tells children that disagreements in views are bad and that everyone should conform to a small set of socially acceptable modes of thought and tastes - was created and initially produced in NH.
New Hampshire is a state where the Yankee busy bodies never got the critical mass they needed to craft the laws to perfect man like they have here in Massachusetts. But, one could always find a subcritical mass of them, clutching their pearls over heathen Turks, Negroes, southerners, Catholics etc.
The NH Yankee busy-bodies actually so harried and hectored my grandfather (despite having lived there for 25 years and financially supporting a significant part of the local congregational church's operating costs, the moment he tried to build a new, smaller house, he instantly became a carpet-bagger from Rhode Island plundering the beauty of NH that had to be sued and stopped) that he sold his land and left.
Seriously, that's what the purple dinosaur show's about? I'd gathered (though not from watching it) that it concerned working out people's differences so they could cooperate. You're saying it's not that, but actually pretending they didn't disagree to begin with?
Given the number of folks from MA moving here, I expect the busy bodies will get critical mass eventually.
There just aren't enough Free Staters. This is why I did not vote for NH despite migrating to NH in the late 90s. I plan to leave NH sometime in the future, hopefully sooner rather than later.
On the other hand, I have to congratulate the Free State Project on pissing the correct people.
I don't know what she had in mind but I can't image what they could do. But the state and local governments could pass further laws and ordinances further restricting housing supply and causing prices to rise. But even that would be a deterrence and not a true restriction. And it would affect more than just libertarians.
the moment he tried to build a new, smaller house, he instantly became a carpet-bagger from Rhode Island plundering the beauty of NH that had to be sued and stopped) that he sold his land and left.
Change is bad, and must be fought tooth and nail. What is now must ever be so.
Funny that they dont want freestaters moving in considering most of the liberals in NH are commies fleeing the high tax burden of Massachusetts. New Hampshire's motto was "Live Free or Die" before idiots from my home state started ruining it.
Dude, I've lived in NH. Most of the Yankee progressives I met there are not massholes, but came from families that had lived there for multiple generations.
I'm sure many are home grown, but their is little doubt in my mind that the politics of that state have been changed because of transplants from MA. Maybe its more radicalization than numbers.
As soon as I hit the submit I realized I should have said that 'They' includes all enemies of liberty like the fucksticks in this article, not just anti-gunners.
"A libertarian is an Anarchist that is too lazy or too scared to move to Somilia"
A consistent libertarian indeed must be an anarchist, but the author of this quote is confused if he or she believes that being a libertarian/anarchist means that someone should move or would want to move to Somalia.
I think the problem's mostly with radical libertarians making themselves sound or seem scary, and that it's therefore a misunderstanding of what they're about. They won't seem threatening to many people once they're there.
I live in NH, but not as part of the project. I share the opinion that the best route to freedom is not through politics, but through self-exploration and personal work.
HOWEVER, I think it's positively lovely to see how many government jimmies are getting rustled these days, by the FSP.
"Cheshire County is a welcoming community but not to those whose stated goal is to move in enough ideologues to steal our state, and our way of life."
There are times when I wish the people in the formerly "Red" state of California had embraced this sentiment while it were still possible to do something about the socialist/populist hordes who turned us so very, very "blue," beginning in the 1960s.
At this point, I do want to make my stand in the State of my birth, but suspect that I might also be more effective in securing liberty SOMEWHERE in the US, by simply abandoning California and moving to NH.
"A friend had a [black slave] from Texas contact her to rent a room she had available. Slavery, open pit mining, revocation of women's suffrage; have I missed anything?
Slavery goes against self-ownership and the non-aggression principle; Revocation of women's suffrage goes against equality of rights.
In Somalia guys, come on.
"I told him that I already rented the room, and that I didn't appreciate him coming here to change our state government, it was an insult to me. Most fair housing laws, which progressives adamently support, prohibit discrimination based on political affiliation. Another example of do as I say, not as I do.
"Progressives".
"Progressives". Their incoherent, reactionary campaign is actually a plan to repeal much of the Enlightenment.
They think their intentions are good.
I bet the guy from TX is principled enough not to give a shit if she discriminated against him or not. Someone else will get his business.
Political affiliation, but not political ideas. But if you registered to vote Libertarian, that'd count as affiliation.
So at a peace demonstration they don't want just any person who wants peace, they want those who want peace and who want to use the state use of a gun to give them the goodies they think they deserve.
The FSP is nothing more than an organized version of what happened to Vermont. (Well, in Vermont it wasn't libertarians who moved in.)
Though in Vermont they really only took over Chittendon county.
It's also an organized version of what happened in NH, with Massholes.
I was actually thinking that. But considering these people are considering taking away freedoms out of spite, I don't think they care about logic.

This seems to be a common refrain in twentifirst century America.
It's as if people are frightened and disoriented by change.
Stasist vs Dynamist.
When Postrel was running this place ....
But remember it was perfectly okay when liberals moved into Vermont and turned the state into Bernie Sandersland.
See, they weren't changing Vermont, they were just moving there to enjoy the scenery and culture that already existed. Except for those rednecks on the farms. And the farms themselves. But they don't live in the city so they don't really count anyway.
I was watching White Christmas over the break, and got a good chuckle out of the comment that "it would be impossible to find a Democrat in Vermont."
Until I left for college in Burlington, that comment perfectly described my time in Vermont.
For a bunch of "libertarian" leaners, they sure do like voting for the bigger nanny stater (Clinton, Kerry, Obama).
So a vote for Romney, on the other hand, woulda been a vote for freedom? That's funny.
There were other people on the ballot, weren't there?
Some guy named Larry Johnston or something......
I can't sign the pledge, but I finally signed up as a FSP supporter. I'm too entrenched in my own compound to ever make the move, but I wish the rest of you dangerous libertarians well.
I could possibly do it at some point, but an hour long commute to work without accounting for any traffic is a bit worrisome.
I talk about it with my bf frequently, but for some reason he keeps wanting to move to VT instead of NH. I say "no income tax!"; he says "no CCW permits!" Both are nice, and fingers crossed we'll end up in one or the other in a few years.
Where are you now?
Don't forget no sales tax in NH either.
What's his field? There's a reason everyone I went to college with left Vermont or works retail....
He's in retail now, so it's really the thought of trying to get out of that and move somewhere where it'd be a lot harder to get out of that...yeah.
There's always farming too.
She is in Hell, er, Illinois - fine, leave use here in the Land Of 5% income tax, no carry and corruption, cronyism and crap. 🙁
Hehe, 5% is not bad, man, not bad at all. I may be pissed it's not still 3%, but it's way better than the 9% I'd be paying in NY or someplace.
6% in KY.
So Illinois has that going for it.
Sales taxes in Hellinois more than make up for the 1% difference.
That's 1 percentage point (or 20%), but yes, for most people they definitely do.
Build a house on the Connecticut river?!?
I like the cut of your jib, sir.
Then you don't even have to work. Just charge boats tolls.
Swiveling the house to let them thru's going to be a bitch when you're in the bathroom. But better than tilting it, I'm sure.
Houseboat!
Given that I grew up in VT and I have many friends there, I have always looked at relocating and retiring there. But VT is so fucked up and expensive, I'm leaning way more to NH, even though I don't know a soul there and the skiing is not the same.
Expensive? My parents are renting out their 7000 sq ft, 5 bedroom, 2.5 bath house with 12 acres of lawn for $300 a month.
Taxes, dude. Taxes.
12 acres....you'll need to pay me more than $300 a month then! That's a lot of mowing!
What about Maine?
It's Wyoming for me. No taxes. My wife is a badass ski-aholic so there's a chance she'll eventually agree to move there too. I'm siked.
The skiing in ME is worse than NH, fer chrissakes! My primary reason for wanting to move back to VT 9or NH) is skiing and general winteriness.
Winter. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck. Hate being in snow for any activity.
Wait till you see NH unemployment, wages, and housing costs!
Compared to where? For example, housing in NH is much more expensive then it is in the South, but New England hasn't suffered the same hits to its economy as in other places in the country, so people have the money to afford it.
I've wanted to sign up for years, but I'm underwater on my house here in Kansas City. As soon as I can get rid of the house, I'm making the move.
"One way is to pass measures that will restrict the "freedoms" that they think they will find here."
I wish she'd been more specific. What freedoms does she plan to restrict?
Is she going to implement zoning laws to relegate Free Staters to only living in certain areas?
Does she plan to restrict Free Stater children from going to public schools? Maybe set them up in their own school system--separate but equal?
Maybe she thinks Free Staters shouldn't be allowed to use public water fountains or restrooms?
What "freedoms" does she plan to restrict?
I believe she means that they'll restrict everyone from doing things. So not discriminating, just spiteful.
That is spiteful!
That's classic "cut off your nose to spite your face" spiteful.
I hope her constituents hear about this.
Unfortunately, her constituents probably won't mind. They'll pass a seat belt law or some bullshit that only Free Staters will care about and everyone else will celebrate For The Children.
NH already has seat belt laws for the childrenz (but not the 26 year old children still on their parents health insurance).
You're right. A lot of the locals probably don't mind.
But she seems to think publicity is something to be afraid of.
"Another is to shine the bright light of publicity on who they are and why they are coming."
Hope she gets plenty. What a mean spirited human being she is. I hope her constituents find out about that.
"We're going to make our state shitty enough you won't want to move here."
That's a woman? Well at least her ugly exterior matches her ugliness inside.
Ahhh....you got to it first!
I should point out that Barney & Friends - a show that tells children that disagreements in views are bad and that everyone should conform to a small set of socially acceptable modes of thought and tastes - was created and initially produced in NH.

Mr. Shultz,
I don't know what she had in mind but I can't image what they could do. But the state and local governments could pass further laws and ordinances further restricting housing supply and causing prices to rise. But even that would be a deterrence and not a true restriction. And it would affect more than just libertarians.
Auric Demonocles suggested she's talking about restricting everybody's "freedoms", too. ...not just FSP people.
I guess the old Gandhi quote fits here: "First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win."
I've never considered moving to New Hampshire before, but after reading what this lady wrote, I wish I could.
I think the intent there was to implement a batch of progressive policies because that would make New Hampshire less attractive to FSPers.
Exactly.
the moment he tried to build a new, smaller house, he instantly became a carpet-bagger from Rhode Island plundering the beauty of NH that had to be sued and stopped) that he sold his land and left.
Change is bad, and must be fought tooth and nail. What is now must ever be so.
Dear Rep. Chase,
Fuck off, slaver.
v/r
LTC(ret) John
'v/r'? she don't rate the 'v', man.
Or even the "r".
Live Free or Die? New Hampshire Democrats would rather die. -------- If you'll allow an Indiana Jones reference: "He chose... poorly."
She's actually right, you know.
Free Staters are a threat to the state. That's their whole point.
Of course, like proggy jackboot-lickers everywhere, she believes "Everything for the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State."
Funny that they dont want freestaters moving in considering most of the liberals in NH are commies fleeing the high tax burden of Massachusetts. New Hampshire's motto was "Live Free or Die" before idiots from my home state started ruining it.

The free state grifters don't get that.
"A libertarian is an Anarchist that is too lazy or too scared to move to Somilia,"
Holy shit, so it isnt a joke. They really believe that shit?
Shouldn't be shocked. They still refuse to learn the difference between semi-automatic and automatic.
They mostly know the difference. They dont have a sound position so disingenuous rhetoric is SOP.
As soon as I hit the submit I realized I should have said that 'They' includes all enemies of liberty like the fucksticks in this article, not just anti-gunners.
EDIT BUTTON!
"A libertarian is an Anarchist that is too lazy or too scared to move to Somilia"
A consistent libertarian indeed must be an anarchist, but the author of this quote is confused if he or she believes that being a libertarian/anarchist means that someone should move or would want to move to Somalia.

The most shocking thing about this is that the Free State Project is having even some small effect on the Granite State.
The Free Staters need to start breeding like Mormons. Within a generation or two, the takeover of NH will be complete.
("A libertarian is an Anarchist that is too lazy or too scared to move to Somilia," writes tchair
In a similar manner, a progressive is a theif that is too lazy or scared to rob people, so they get the government to do it for them.
That is awesome.
I live in NH, but not as part of the project. I share the opinion that the best route to freedom is not through politics, but through self-exploration and personal work.
HOWEVER, I think it's positively lovely to see how many government jimmies are getting rustled these days, by the FSP.
