Baylen Linnekin on San Francisco's Famed Forage Underground Market
San Francisco's famed Forage Underground Market will shut down later this month. But the tracks laid by its founder Iso Rabins--and others around the country--mean that the choice to make and sell many foods locally is increasingly returning to small entrepreneurs. Though the Underground Market will soon—to use the language of regulators—cease and desist, Rabins's creation, writes Baylen Linnekin, will be remembered as part of the leading edge of a larger trend.

Have you guys seen the movie Vegucated?
"Part sociological experiment and part adventure comedy, Vegucated follows three meat- and cheese-loving New Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks. Lured by tales of weight lost and health regained, they begin to uncover the hidden sides of animal agriculture that make them wonder whether solutions offered in films like Food, Inc. go far enough. This entertaining documentary showcases the rapid and at times comedic evolution of three people who discover they can change the world one bite at a time."
Why would anyone "agree to adopt" an eating disorder?
"Honey isn't vegan because the bees are enslaved. That buzzing you hear? Work songs and spirituals as they toil on the cruel, inhumane, bee plantation. What about wild honey? As libertarians you should respect the bees' property rights to the product of their labors"
THIS IS WHAT VEGANS ACTUALLY BEE-LIEVE
You think I'm going to comb through that ball of wax? It'll give me hives parsing what those drones have to say about such nonsense.
Incidentally, did the bees tell them what they wanted in this mutual contract?
That was a little insane. I liked the article that argued that bees were bad for the environment, and should not be used for pollination. Insane ramblings of a protein-deficient moron.
Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are agents of colonization and imperialism:
Native Americans called them "white man's flies."
damn spell check
"colonialism"
haven't seen it and do not want to. Man is NOT a vegetarian by nature and no amount of pretending to the contrary changes that. And the "health regained" bullshit from vegetarianism is just that.
Have you ever looked at one of those folks? Pale, gaunt, perpetually pissed off looking. Probably because they're hungry but whatever. All I have ever asked from them is the same respect for my food choices as I have for theirs. When I hear tripe like Meatless Monday, I offer to do it if they'll have a Steak Saturday in return, but like most lefties, tolerance means doing things their way.
Ugh.
Thing is, the typical diet in this country is so awful that veganism can be better by comparison, no matter how far from optimal.
6 on one hand, half dozen on the other. Poor diet is a poor diet, and the body pays a price.
The Standard American Diet (yes, it is SAD) brings one set of consistent problems while veganism brings its own set. And neither are good.
The right sort of vegan diet is better than the SAD, but you're just as likely to see a junk food vegan as a raw food vegan.
The SAD is like being at the bottom of a pit, and most vegans have at most climbed one rung up the ladder but they crow about how awesome they are.
Another fine vegan. It might really be a psychosis.
Do you know who else was an animal rights pioneer, vegetarian and Nazi?
Vapid documentary about vapid idiots and their vapid made up food rules. Whoopee.
People eat haggis, and sheeps' eyeballs, and chitlins. If they want to eat grass, they can eat grass. Big fucking deal. More power to them.
I'm having ribs for dinner. With mashed potatoes.
Do you know who else enjoyed ribs and mashed potatoes?
after reading Brooks' post, I may be among teh who else.
Frosted Tips?

Jeebus, do we have to get multiple spams per thread by the pedobot now? It's long past time to cancel the account of "waaminn" and force it to sign up again. Make these spammers work!
