Illinois Amtrak Train Reaches 111 mph in Test
But can it actually make money?
For the first time on a key Midwestern route between Chicago and St. Louis, an Amtrak passenger train topped 110 mph Friday, ripping through fog-shrouded farm fields and blowing past cars on a parallel highway.
The test run on a special train packed with journalists, politicians and transportation officials was a milestone in President Barack Obama's vision of bringing high-speed rail to the United States and transforming the way Americans travel. It also was a welcome morale booster for high-speed rail advocates who have watched conservatives in Congress put the brakes on spending for fast train projects they view as expensive boondoggles.

Only 11 mph faster than I drive that stretch in my car. As a bonus, I have my car when I get there to get around town.
lol I meant 21 mph faster. Although, I could push it to 100 if there weren't so many other cars on the road.... maybe I should advocate the train to others after all.

A "special train" larded with govt mouthpieces, govt officials and govt employees. I get it, I get it. The same people that would be riding the real thing.
Wow, Amtrak has developed the ability to do what Norfolk & Western and Union Pacific could do 80 years ago, and with the same degree of relevance to the modern world as the steam engines N&W and UP used.
I've puzzled over this for years, why are progs so enthralled with rail?
