Police Shoot 83-Year-Old Woman, Robocallers Fight Illegal Signs, Another GOP Sex Scandal: P.M. Links
-
An 83-year-old woman was shot and killed by police who had entered her home in Virginia, following up on an apparent 911 hang-up. She thought they were intruders and fired on them, relatives said, before leaving out the back door to seek refuge with her sister two doors down. The police's account of the incident is remarkably, radically different.
- To try to combat those pesky illegal signs on telephone poles and lamp posts, Miami-Dade County officials in Florida are flooding offenders with robocalls to phone numbers posted on the fliers.
- According to Barclays, Spain will likely request a bailout by mid-October. The government will be revealing its 2013 budget on Friday.
- Although Paul Ryan voted against eliminating the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy so that gays could openly serve in the military, he, like Mitt Romney, has no interest in bringing it back.
- Florida State Rep. Mike Horner, R-Kissimmee, resigned today after his name showed up as an alleged client during the investigation of a prostitution ring.
- National Health Service rationing is leading to British patients looking for medical help in the private market for services like cataract removals and joint replacements.

The police's account of the incident is remarkably, radically different.
Unless there's video, that's the account we'll be using.
Don't you like how Shackford disguises whose account he's comparing the police account to? Hint: it's someone who wasn't there and has no conceivable way of knowing what actually happened.
No, not dishonest at all.
The police were at the house for a 911 hangup, and the house was otherwise empty.
So unless this is suicide by cop, the only reasonable conclusion is that this old lady thought she heard intruders and tried to call 911, and then mistakenly believed that the police were the intruders.
Although I do have to say it sounds like a good shoot at first blush, even using that account. It's unfortunate and sad that this woman mistakenly believed the police were intruders, but if she shot at them they get to shoot back.
Pretty crafty of this woman to conceal her murderous cop-killing inclinations from her entire family for eight decades.
...Miami-Dade County officials in Florida are flooding offenders with robocalls to phone numbers posted on the fliers.
Please tell me plans are in the works for fliers posted with county officials' phone numbers.
Great minds, Fist, great minds.
"Great minds fist great minds"
I read that as a transitive statement...
I guess that's why you're the evil twin.
I believe it was meant to be.
Florida State Rep. Mike Horner, R-Kissimmee, resigned today after his name showed up as an alleged client during the investigation of a prostitution ring.
I thought FL was a dead girl or live boy resignation state. Shit. I guess I'm not running in '14.

Police dogs are only able to follow a scent when their handler is yelling "the drugs are in there, boy!" and offering a treat in case they alert.
Let me guess, it's because the cops shot them?
National Health Service rationing is leading to British patients looking for medical help in the private market for services like cataract removals and joint replacements.
Back alley coat hanger cataract removal! Get your back alley coat hanger cataract removal here!
There will be a market in medical services, regardless of what the government does to kill it.
Not possible. I have been informed by the Leftists all day that healthcare rationing increases liberty.
There is no rationing in gummint healthcare! Only Benevolent Oversight by our Betters!
Only FREE MARKET INSURANCE rations! And it does so in an EVIL WAY!!!11!

Florida State Rep. Mike Horner, R-Kissimmee, resigned today after his name showed up as an alleged client during the investigation of a prostitution ring.
If only he could have hung on and made it to the big leagues. On Capitol Hill he wouldn't have to pay for it (depending on his committee assignments).
God was toying with the men last night.

Although Paul Ryan voted against eliminating the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy so that gays could openly serve in the military, he, like Mitt Romney, has no interest in bringing it back.
Could it be that the Republican candidates are actually thinking about focusing on economic matters and jettisoning SoCon baggage?
I seriously doubt it. But bless your withered little heart for your optimism.
Didn't they just sign a promise to strictly enforce obscenity laws?
LEAVE MY PRON ALONE!
Perhaps. But of course when they do that, Reason will call them flip floppers and pretend doing this isn't exactly what Reason has been advocating since forever.
John, this is sub-joe level trolling. If you honestly think Reason writers would be anything but thankful for such a change, you really deserve to be called TEAM RED TONY.
I used to think that. Then Romney pointed out that 47% of the country pays no taxes and gets a lot of benefits, something I have been reading about on Reason for years, and the Reason staffers went batshit insane about how horrible it was culminating with Sheldon Richman advocating for progressive taxation this weekend.
So I have lost a bit of faith in them recently.
You mean this?:
Richman wrote about ending corporate welfare, not progressive tax rates. 'Get rid of corporate welfare before personal welfare, and start cutting taxes of the lowest earners before those who earn more.' He was talking about a strategy to get rid of welfare and taxes while avoiding progressive criticisms of "regression". You can say that strategy has flaws (I'd agree), but he wasn't talking about implementing more taxes on the rich.
but he wasn't talking about implementing more taxes on the rich.
John didn't say he was doing that. He said Richman was arguing for making the rich pay a larger share of taxes. That's what "making the tax system more progressive" means.
Why exactly is it a problem to argue for cutting taxes on the lower and middle classes? Sure we should also cut taxes on the rich, but that doesn't mean he's wrong to argue that point
Romney didn't "point out" anything. He incorrectly stated something as fact and reason corrected his math (many times).
Did you notice reason has only gone after his incorrect message and not that freeloading isn't wrong? Or are you so hellbent on getting Turd Sandwich out of the White House that you're all too willing to jump behind Giant Douche?
There are lots of good reasons to criticize Romney. Reason just can't seem to stick wit them. The post was a joke. He didn't just argue for getting rid of corporate welfare. He argued for getting rid of taxes on everyone but the rich. That is a progressive tax system. And that goes against everything Reason stands for. Why the hell should the rich have to be the only ones who pay taxes? Since when does REason by into class envy?
Oh since they went full retard over the election.
I don't think it's fair to equate Richmond with Reason. Most of the writers who reprint (Steve Chapman being the obvious example) are a bit freer from Matt's editorial hand.
Opinions can vary. I actually applaud their support of their writers, even when they go off script.
That's not what Romney got wrong. He was wrong in saying that those 47% will support the DEmocrat.
Just like they ripped Paul Ryan for voting against Simpson-Bowles because he didn't think it went far enough in deficit reduction? And said he was just as bad as Obama, who ignored the SB plan?
Yeah, and how would you feel if someone came on here and tried making an argument that you theoretically supported, but with easily refuted factual errors and ham-handed tactlessness? It would make you look like an ass by proxy.
Maybe Reason staffers feel about Romney's 47% remarks about like most Republicans feel about Todd Akin's "legitimate rape".
That reminds me: fuck you, Paul Ryan.
This Recovery Summer has gone on too long! No one threatens my bacon supply
With pork costs rising, Great Britain is facing a bacon and sausage shortage as pig farmers cut back on herd size. But the problem may soon become global.
Bacon is wasted on the British, and their sausage is terrible, too.
So there.
But don't make that shit go global - nuh uh. Cause 'murcans will NOT put up with that - and we know a little sumpn sumpn bout bacon.
Actually, breakfast is the only meal they do pretty well. Their sausage is OK. But don't ever get stuck in a British hospital. Just imagine: hospital food, but British. IT'S HORRIBLE.
"If the bad medicine don't kill ya, the bad food WILL!" HAHA!
Yes, British breakfast is decent. I like the tomato (though not the beans).
*barf*
I like the beans. And tomato. As long as it's got eggs and steak/bacon/sausage I'm good with throwing a wide variety of other stuff in there.
Single fish (no chips), meat pies and/or haggis pretty much every day. Any or all.
THAT was good eating.
Really? Hot, dry sausage, hot tomatoes, hot beans, hot eggs, hot coffee. I couldn't stand it.
The english do breakfast and cheese well.
But the problem may soon become global.
I can think of a region in the world where there will be no bacon shortage. A shortage on many other things from the civilized world maybe, but not bacon.
Romney should vow to kill the ethanol mandate. It's a waste of money and energy and is causing food prices to rise at a critical time.
With pork costs rising, Great Britain is facing a bacon and sausage shortage as pig farmers cut back on herd size.
Shouldn't farmers be increasing the size of their herds, since the price is rising and they can make more per hog?
Officer privacy is paramount.
"Person", huh? It's probably a woman.

Because the violent protests against The Innocence of Muslims were so successful, threats of violence are now being used to suppress a documentary program advancing the argument that there was no historical Mohammad.
I should send the jihadists a link to my discussion with John on this topic. Have at him, jihadists!
Could I get violent protests in favor of my comments? Are violent protestors available for hire?
2 bottles of tequila and bail money, I'm in.
That's right, I should keep my dollars and tequila in-state. Supporting the Florida and U.S. economies. Break some windows while you're protesting, to help Florida glaziers.
I'll get violent for free, ProL. What was your address again?
Someone smashed his mailbox, so look for the number on his house
Don't look at me. I was all the way out here in California.
No, no, violence in my name, not violence against me.
Why not both?
Please do. I would love to be on their fucking hit list. Talk about a badge of honor.
Oh yeah - it's all fun and games until the RPG's start flying
The RPGs can go both ways.
Cue the seventies porno music
*bow chicka wow wow....*
Speaking of RPGs*, Borderlands 2 is more fun than a box of puppies.
*I know, I know, more of a shooter, but it has some RPG bits, too. And probably about a million RPGs, once I get to a higher level.
What class are you playing? If you say commando, I'm going to punch BP in the taint.
B2 is as much fun as B1 so far, maybe even more so. And I've only been able to play 8-10 so far, 4.5 of them just yesterday.
I have an incendiary machine gun that has an absurdly large magazine capacity (270!) now, a really nice sight, and have been lighting fuckers up like mad. Add in my Incendiary Fox mod and, well, burn mother fuckers, burn!
I'm picking it up tonight so I can start gaming w/ a HS buddy. He reminded me that our first joint online gaming experience was X-wing vs. Tie Fighter on dialup in 1995 or 96.
It has a solo campaign, dude.
Some people have friends, you misanthrope.
"Shit, doc, I got lots of friends."
"I don't."
My point was that you didn't need to find a friend to play it with in order to buy it. You could do both.
XWvTF rocked. But we didn't play it much; Doom 2 networked was the shit.
Formal classes now? Is the elementary sorcereress still available? I so loves her.
What class are you playing?
Commando. I'm a terrible shot, so I need the turret. Bad.
And I have a shit internet hookup, so even if I had friends, I'd still have to play solo.
I'm playing gunzerker now, which is fine since I like shooting things.
If we get enough of us on here playing, we should talk about co-op night.
(punches BP in the taint)
Why are NutraSweet and I the only ones who choose to play the girl? This means something.
When I get to probably about level 18 or so shit is going to start getting really retarded. That's when the game is the most fun, or at least it was in B1.
For some reason, I always set up as a chick in Fallout games. Dunno why.
I've played Siren in both games (then again, I am a girl). I play with 3 guys and none of them want to play as a female character (*rolls eyes*). Their loss. I'm level 22 now and it's crazy fun.
That's stupid, as the Siren is probably the most customizable class. I had my B1 Siren operating as a major damage dealer (I could take down one of the powered armor suits in the General Knox DLC within about 2-3 seconds with an elemental SMG), and my B2 one is on her way to that as well. Phaselocking is turning out to be really fucking useful and devastating.
I do want to try an assassin eventually, though, I think.
I completely agree. They are missing out. I'm playing Maya the same was as you (Hell Fox, wahooo!). I was not sure if I'd like phaselock, but it grew on me really, really fast. I think I may end up liking Maya even better than Lilith. I am looking forward to the release of the mecromancer class; I want to try it next.
That should be "way as you", not "was as you". . . uggggh. This being logged out all the time really sucks. No time to proofread.
I understood. Yeah, I have a Fox Mod right now myself since all my shit is incendiary. I have an incendiary assault rifle with a magazine capacity of 270. It's like raining fire sideways.
The mechromancer is primarily intended as a support class, so I'm not that interested. Did you pre-purchase the game? Because that gets you in the Premiere Club and you get the first DLC--with the mechromancer--for free.
We did pre-purchase. Playing co-op definitely improves the loot drops--we found 2 legendaries by level 11 (repeater pistol with unlimited ammo and a shotgun that is basically a grenade launcher). I've finally found a Witch mod, so I'll probably flip back and forth between Fox and Witch. I had not realized the mechromancer would be a support class. . . NOT INTERESTED. I'll go for Zer0. BTW, I have been surprised at how much time guys will spend at a New-U station trying on skins and checking themselves out. Good lord.
Epi, I should clarify that we are each wearing the +5% rare item drop relic that came with pre-purchase and that has probably helped the most with better looting. I have not seen a relic worth switching to yet.
I haven't even encountered another relic yet, but yesterday was the first day since release that I was able to play longer than a mission or two, so I'm still only level 11 or 12. I expect shit to really start dropping around level 16 to 18.
Gah still need to beat the first one!
I'm replaying the first with all the DLC I missed the first time around. My nephew is moving in with us in about a month, and he already has the second. No reason to get it with my own money.
There was a sweet deal on Crysis 2 last week, so I' good right now.
Tell me about it.
"Did you hear that?!"
"Sorry, just my sphincter slamming shut. God, I hate RPGs!"
Because the violent protests against The Innocence of Muslims were so successful, threats of violence are now being used to suppress a documentary program
You mean, you get more of what you reward?
I'm sure this will be written off as an "unintended consequence".
This also invokes me today, you tomorrow, if only this idiotic enablers would realize it.
So I suppose the new Fallout set in New Mecca is right out, huh?
Just call it New Mecha.

In the latest John L. Smith blunder, he confuses Arkansas and Alabama
"Don't give up on us. It's our program, it's a state of Alabama program," Smith said, which, according to AP, prompted a room full of groans. "It's not one individual's program."
Poor Smith, not much has gone right since he became the Arkansas' head coach and this is just another blunder in what has become a disastrous season for the Razorbacks.
Someone actually pointed out the gaffe while Smith fielded questions from the crowd and he responded in his typical John L. Smith way: "I did? Where would that come from? I've never even heard of Alabama."
I want this season over. I won't this season be over?

Socialism is an expensive luxury.
No doubt the Obama administration is frantically pleading with them to hold off until after the election.

Oh. The son, who wasn't there yet purports to know his mother's motivation and actions at every moment of the incident because "she was a good christian woman".
And yeah, even according to his story, she apparently fired her handgun randomly when she heard someone approaching the house. Reckless endangerment, anyone?
Like I said, bitch was real crafty hiding her murderous nature from her family and friends for so long. The cops took a female Dexter off the streets for sure.

It's positively bizarre how many of them say that a school paddling is "obviously inappropriate" or "creepy". Like he did it with his wang hanging out or something.
I had an English teacher in high school who used to stand with his foot up on girls' desks while he lectured. Picture one foot on the fround, one on the desk (he was quite tall), leaning forward, intenselt exlpaining by Steinbeck or Joyce was a genius unparalled. Now imagine he had a 12" penis tucked down his leg that was either semi erect or like a fucking diesel pump hose.
Now that's creepy.
Did we go to the same school?
I suppose it's possible. Who was your elected Representative in the U.S. House?
Well since I went to high school in Canada, I doubt it now.
And it was the geography teacher.
There's always one. We had a junior high coach who taught history like that at my school growing up.
Even if a woman did it, you could still eroticize it if you really wanted to.

OT:
Following our discussion last week on how pollsters reweight their data to fit a model/prediction of what voter turnout will be, somebody has set up a website which reweights the data in a bunch of polls to fit Rasmussen's current data on party ID:
http://www.unskewedpolls.com/
According to their results, Romney has a big lead.
I would be interested to see an interactive website, which lets you pick the weighting you think is most accurate (Rasmussen current data? 2008 election? 2010 election? A blended average?)
My own completely out of my ass guess is that Dem party affiliation should be lower than 2008, but higher than 2010. 2010 was the near-term nadir for that figure.
I have no basis for this other than "that kinda feels like the right answer to me".
They even bust on good ol' Reason-Rupe.
I'm going to be asking Dr. Girlfriend about this one (her Ph.D is in statistics).
So I can cite this over at Breitbart?
"Libertarians need to Support the Constitution by voting for Romney!!!one!12!@"
This guy assumes that the polls are releasing raw data with no attempt to correct for mismatches in their sample makeup by party affiliation. Are all pollsters this dumb? I have a feeling they are not. It's quite possible he is applying a correction to already corrected numbers. Reading his article on unskewing the polls doesn't give me much confidence in him.
