Court Pushes on TSA's Public Comment Snub, Greek Leaders Live Large in London, More Dispensaries Shut Down by Feds: P.M. Links
-
The U.S. Court of Appeals has ruled that Department of Homeland Security must respond to a petition demanding the agency follow the law and allow the public a chance to comment on the Transportation Security Administration's use of body-scanners.
- Colombian President Juan Miguel Santos has ratified a law declaring that drug addiction is a public health issue, not a crime. The change, though, also obligates insurance providers to pay for drug addiction treatment.
- Bailouts? Austerity? We'll worry about that when we get home. We're on vacation! Greek officials are partying hard at the London Olympics.
- As many as 50,000 children are involved in organized crime in Mexico. A report by a professor at National School of Social Work at the Autonomous University of Mexico indicates that 10,000 children in the country have been rendered orphans by violence.
- More marijuana dispensaries shut down in San Francisco due to pressure from the Justice Department.
- The Massachusetts state Legislature is calling for a federal constitutional amendment to reverse the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. Wouldn't that also be known as "repealing the First Amendment?"
- The Olympics will decide what sort of strategies athletes are allowed to use, thank you very much. Eight badminton players from Asian countries were booted from the games for deliberately trying to throw matches to manipulate their positioning in the game's ranking system.

GOLD!
Wouldn't that also be known as "repealing the First Amendment?"
Finally, a check on the Constitution itself.
I'm thinking it would be pretty cool if the ruling was overturned and then the rules strictly enforced so that no group could donate.
Extend that to wedding registries, and I might get on board...
I'd particularly love the FEC raiding the NYT and WaPo offices, seeing as they're vicious kkkorporate pirates engaging in political speech.
As a freshly registered resident of Massachusetts, (newer even than my registration as a commenter of H*squirrel*R), I apologize for the idiocy of my elected officials.
Get used to it. What's the slogan there, "Dumbest State in the Union?"
California and Illinois resent this.
It's a vigorous and bloody competition, no doubt.
"Who can be the biggest Masshole?"
joe?
"Who can be the biggest Masshole besides joe?"
Biggest? Isn't he Hobbitt-sized? Bitterest Masshole? Most disingenuous Masshole? Most delusional Masshole? Most irrationally self-regarding Masshole? These are what joe is running for...
Damn it! Curse this distracting conference call slowing me down!
We really need to reverse-Alien v Predator those states.
Don't worry. It's a race to the bottom across all 50 states.
More marijuana dispensaries shut down in San Francisco due to pressure from the Justice Department.
The Summer of Recovery II is under way! (Maybe they can go into the plastic bag business.)
All plastic bags to be banned in California.
Sidenote: Living in Sunnyvale which already has this stupid law, why the FUCK am I paying a tax on paper bags when every handwringer in the state told me the problem was with plastic bags?
This is something.
"Open condom style!"
Thanks for that. Shit like this is why I love pm links.
The U.S. Court of Appeals has ruled that Department of Homeland Security must respond to a petition demanding the agency follow the law...
Their response? ..|.
But...but...we live under the rule of law, right?
You and I do, Top. Men. seem not to.
I thought the TSA's response to everything was, "Because fuck you, that's why!"
As many as 50,000 children are involved in organized crime in Mexico
My grandfather used to run numbers for gentlemen up in Brooklyn when he was a kid. I assume this a different sort of involvement.
We must respond to the child-criminal-labor gap! We can't let Mexico get ahead of us! How do we get more children into drug running?!
USA! USA! USA!
I think he made a dollar a day back in the Depression. It was a good job for an 11-15 year old.
My grandpa would steal liqueur that washed up on shore during prohibition.
Actually my great grandpa ran a tavern...so I imagine from 1920 to 1930 he ran it illegally.
Weird that I never put that together until just now.
In fact thinking about it more my grandpa took off like at age 15 to eastern Washington and worked in the orchards then bought a bunch of wild horses from the Indians then brought em to western Washington to sell...
I think he might have stolen part of my great grandpas shipment in order to afford to buy the horses...no way one season of apple picking money could get you enough money to buy one horse let along whole bunch of them....it would also explain why he took off at such a young age.
Holy shit I am descended from an entire criminal enterprise!!!
Or he just got a few bottles and drank it with some buddies...and apple picking money is enough to pay for horse...either way.
Has this been previously reported? Pepper spray cop no longer employed at UC Davis.

Hey reason, how about modifying your spam filter to at least give me a copy of the suspected spam post so I don't have to try retyping it from memory?

That reminds of when a delegation from the smallish resort town where I live inexplicably took a trip to China to either promote tourism or get the Chinese perspective on promoting tourism.

From the entirely missing the point files.
The Transportation Security Administration suffers from an image problem, and recent criminal and negligent behavior by airport screeners has made matters worse.
No assholes. Its exactly what we expect from government employees.
I like the chain of events that they're positing:
"We have an image problem; comes out of nowhere. Could it be that our image problem is caused by the criminal and negligent behavior of our screeners? Heavens, no, that's just a reinforcing factor!"

Math Is Hard
ColoradoWatchdog has another classic from Drew Westen, the Emory University psychologist-cum-political consultant, who explains that academics are left-wing because left-wingers are smart:
"Prior data have shown that math professors are just as pro-Democratic as sociologists.
"That suggests that people who think logically and have been selected for intellect are more convinced by Democrats than Republicans," Westen said. "Perhaps that's not a surprise when you take into consideration that Republicans defy basic math by arguing that you can cut deficits by throwing public employees out of work, which cuts the number of taxpayers (and hence reduces tax revenue) . . ."
You can't satirize these people anymore.
Don't you know that public employees pay 150% of their government pay check in taxes?
Its the multiplier effect!!
Wow. I mean...wow. And right after saying his TEAM is the smart one. I...wow.
Yeah, I was thinking Wow also and at a loss for what to say. Wow.
This doesn't real. No way. You can't possibly be this stupid and not choke to death on your breakfast long before you get a chance to write a nationally published article. Just... Just no./Wishful thinking
He must be trolling.
It's real. I know it's hard to comprehend.
If he is, then he's absolutely brilliant.
There are certainly ways you could say Republicans "defy basic math"... but then you choose :
Also:
I've always been under the impression, from my own anecdotes, that engineers are more likely to be Republicans than Democrats... Which leads me to note something:
When your livelihood is dependent on government largess, you tend to side with the party that is explicitly in favor of big-government. While Republicans want just as much bloat as Democrats, they aren't as upfront about it. Which scares off those who live on the gravy train.
I happened to be working as as consultant at Northrup Grumman during the 2008 election. These DEFENSE CONTRACTORS were rooting for Obama because they knew he would keep the gravy pouring, whereas with McCain you didn't know if he would suddenly go on an austerity bender and start canceling failed projects.
Engineers in my experience trend Republican and libertarian. But then, my entire career has been oil and gas. You don't get many democrats in the industry. It's like being a vegetarian butcher.
Republicans defy basic math by arguing that you can cut deficits by throwing public employees out of work, which cuts the number of taxpayers (and hence reduces tax revenue)
Yep... When we have 100% of the population employed by the government we'll have ginormous budget surpluses and can finally pay off the debt.
Now I understand why have Communist countries failed: although everyone was employed by the govt., no one paid taxes (we used to receive net pay and there were no sales taxes). Obviously the lack of taxes forced the govt. to borrow from the dying capitalists...
Math professors.
Now look at the entire field of people with math degrees.
What does that tell you?
Most people with math degrees working in the private sector are in finance or computer science, if that tells you anything.
Question: Could you convince these people that shooting themselves in the head would be a good idea because their high powered brains need to get more oxygen?
I lean towards yes.
who explains that academics are left-wing because left-wingers are smart
That's one theory. Another is that professors know where their money comes from (the government teat) and are more than willing to sing for their supper.
Perhaps that's not a surprise when you take into consideration that Republicans defy basic math by arguing that you can cut deficits by throwing public employees out of work, which cuts the number of taxpayers (and hence reduces tax revenue) . . ."
Talk about bad math. Where does Mssr. Westen imagine that public employees' wages come from? Tax money. When you get right down to the numbers, public employees paying taxes on money that was already paid AS TAXES, is nothing but kabuki theatre, giving the illusion that public employees are not, in fact, tax-fed leeches.
BAF SALTZ!!
The couple was using bath salts ? a type of synthetic drug ? when they called 911 to complain that phantom gang members were camped out under their house, police in Kings Mountain, N.C., said.
"They were there yesterday and last night," Donna told the dispatcher.
The couple then allegedly hauled a military bag full of weapons outside, and Donna fired about seven shots into the air.
My advice, no matter how good the drugs are, sleep every other day.
Zombies and phantoms? Someone needs to do something about these bath salts.
My god, the bag was military?!? Where does a civilian get a military bag?!
These military-style assault bags are 100% legal thanks to the NRA.
...and they're "tactical"...
Nonsense! The only difference between an assault military bag and a civilian gym bag is the firing pin. Stupid Pelosi can't even tell the difference.
YKK Zippers?
So what's the point of ereaders? I'm about to reread the Wheel of Time series so I'm fresh when the final book comes out in January. Since I've moved a bunch (1 time per year since high school) I don't have my old copies around and I was considering getting a Kindle/etc to use for these 12 books.
As it turns out some of the electronic version cost MORE than the printed version. Given that the Kindle costs in the 100 dollar range, why would I pay the same (or more) for an ebook? I guess convenience would be a pro, but then the value of the Kindle makes it more important to keep track of than just a book.
Why do you guys have one?
Just go download the pdfs off piratebay
Unless you are an advocate of property rights and the like.
I am in favor of property rights. Hence I won't steal your paper and ink book. I won't steal your CDs either. But that doesn't mean property rights extend to the words expressed by the ink or the sounds expressed by the digital code on the CD.
I'm about to reread the Wheel of Time series so I'm fresh when the final book comes out in January.
I guess I admire your commitment, or suggest you see about drugs for your OCD.
I love the shit out of my iPad, which is essentially an expensive ereader/email platform. I'm not much on repurchasing books I owned hardcopy though.
The problem is that it's been 6-7 years since I read any of the series, and there's so much going on that if I jump back in with the first book I haven't read, I'll miss a ton of stuff. And have no idea who any of the boatload of characters are.
And have no idea who any of the boatload of characters are.
Neither does the new writer.
To be fair, neither did Robert Jordan at some point.
Because I torrent the books.
It's just like an iPod dude....no one really fills it up with legally purchased music.
So it's something that I shouldn't bother to own?
Yeah, portable music fucking sucks.
It's still music, and if that wasn't bad enough it's made by Apple.
Yeah, I hate things that work well too.
If I have to send it in to get a battery replaced, I'm not going to like it.
And if its sole function is to play music, I'm not going to like it.
The point is I can carry around weeks worth of music in my pocket. Have fun with your childish hatred of all things Apple. As Randian would say, your life must be pretty fucking boring.
Apple is hardly the only or even best option for music.
Well I actually agree that Ipods are now pointless. The only one I use is my shuffle for running. All of my music is uploaded to Google Music and I can stream it anywhere on my phone. If I am going go somewhere without a connection or wifi I can save copies of what I want. An ipod is redundant.
Umm, as an inveterate hater of all things Apple, I have to disagree, ProL. I stayed off the Apple bandwagon for a looong time. But the iPod is truly a great device, as long as you get rid of the stock earbuds.
iTunes is a piece of shit, mind you, but I bypass that by using MediaMonkey.
iTunes is fine once you learn how to operate a mouse.
I'm not talking Apple hate here, though I despise the cult. I don't think the iPod is the best music device, nor, for that matter, do I think they have the best phone.
I do think they still hold the edge in tablets, but the end of that is on the horizon.
Well, I can carry a whole bunch of books. That's nice for travel.
I can also get public domain books by the cartload for free, and a good many books are quite cheap in this format.
Finally, the eInk is easy on the eyes and pretty darned close to reading ink on paper.
Yup, love the eInk. Hate that color crap. Don't know why people pay more for stuff looks worse and sucks your battery.
Because:
1) I can get rid of tons of paper books
2) If you get one, the simple benefits like being able to put it down and not lose your page will become clear
3) It's smaller and lighter than most books, yet can carry thousands on it
4) It's fucking awesome and I love it
That's why. I was skeptical before I got mine, and it instantly converted me the moment I used it.
I still love paper books, but the Kindle has many nice advantages. I highly recommend it or a similar e-reader.
Be able to read in the dark is an amazing boon for insomniacs and--more importantly--the non-insomniacs that love them.
"...the non-insomniacs that love them..."
I assume you're speaking hypothetically.
None loves me, but there's a possibility that some insomniac somewhere is loved.
No there isn't.
I really like my Kindle also. I can read it for hours without my eyes getting tired and it is so easy to hold and turn the pages. As Epi said, it remembers the last page you read so you don't have to worry about loosing your place. And as ProL stated, there are just tons of free books available.
But see, all of these are true of my paper backs:
And since I am fine bending the corners of my pages, this isn't really a draw either:
It seems like the answers I'm getting are:
They're better than other ebook readers used to be.
There are a lot of old free books.
You can carry a ton of books at once (even though I only really care about having one at a time).
I was skeptical as hell of e-readers. Enjoyed browsing books at the library bookstores etc.
Then last year my wife gave me a kindle as a gift.
I haven't bought or checked out a printed book since. Probably never will again.
Here's the advantages:
Never lose your place-page.
Carry as many books as you want with you, which is great for travel or if you have to kill time randomly.
Quick reference and instant availability. Just finished a book by author X and want to read another of his works? No problem, you can find it and get it remotely in seconds to minutes.
Broaden your horizons. I've read books that I never would have because they were either recommended by amazon or were promotionally offered for free or at $.99.
Search and reference. You can highlight and save text for future reference, and search for specific passages based on key words / phrases.
Oh, and by the way: there is something very, very wrong with you if you're still with the WoT series.
Something, very, very wrong. You frighten me. Or disgust me. One of those.
Things that frighten and disgust Epi are what turn him on. Guard your asshole, Auric.
NutraSweet learned that lesson the hard way.
My in-house emergency alert system has been at DEFCON STEVE SMITH for years.
I thought the Wheel of Time was an elaborate sociological experiment to segment the reading population into populations based on the minimum level of action to page ratio they would tolerate in a book?
I made it halfway through the third book before I suddenly was struck by the pointlessness of it all.
I'm about to reread the Wheel of Time series
I hate you more than I hate Tulpa times joe.
Like I said, there's something incredibly wrong with him. I'm surprised he can still function in society, clothe himself, or breathe.
Would that be like Shadar Logoth vs the Shadow? So that they cancel each other out with hatred?
All I remember from those fucking books is that Rand is a dick, his fucking friends are whiners and one is a werewolf or something, and there was like a tribe of slutty Amazons or something. Fucking Robert Jordan. He should have stuck to writing enjoyable and stupid Conan books.
You sound like you just smoothed your skirt and folded your arms under your breasts.
STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT
Fuck you, you woolheaded man.
Now you're tugging your braid.
R E Howard wrote the only Conan books. There are no others.
What about the partial ones that L. Sprague de Camp finished?
[cough]
Hey, look. I'm typing a whole bunch of words to get around the spam filter...

I have a Kindle because I can't read anything off a monitor for more than, say, 20 minutes before my eyes start to ache. The non-backlit screen allows me to read all the cool free books I find on the Internet.
Jose Canseco on the 2nd Amendment
I loved Canseco as a kid. Yeah, he probably did juice.
Anyway, I agree with his stance on guns!
I love his tweets. They are more nonsensical than Horse_ebooks.
"..former baseball star, global warming expert and Twitter aficionado Jose Canseco..."
I know a guy who is a former mental patient, a lawyer aaaand a preacher. I am not making that up.
Ten seconds reading Canseco's shit tells me he is an idiot. He got the right answer on guns though.
Didn't he admit to juicing in his book? Or did he just accuse everyone else?
Former Oakland Athletics slugger Jose Canseco has filed for bankruptcy protection in Nevada.

IRS taxes Olympic medals as income by the price of the commodity in them
http://www.nationalreview.com/.....-botwinick
I saw where Rubio introduced a bill to make them tax exempt.
So they tax the medals themselves and the cash prize the USOC gives the athletes? Does the IOC also run the IRS?
I thought you don't have to pay tax until you realize the capital gain from a sale.
The athletics are lucky they don't tax them based on some phantom value like they did with that pile of junk fantastic artwork a couple of weeks ago.
I've said it before: Olympic gold medalists should be granted tax exempt status for the rest of their lives, in the true spirit of the Olympic Games.
And Pankration should return as an Olympic sport.

The Massachusetts state Legislature is calling for a federal constitutional amendment to reverse the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. Wouldn't that also be known as "repealing the First Amendment?"
This is popular in Montana, as well. Fucking ignorant douchebags; apparently they believe each dollar spent on a political campaign is counted as a vote in the ballot box. How else do you explain the "Outsider money will buy our electionz!!!!!!!!!" panic?
I am so dissapointed in Montana. I thought that was a good state like Colorado.
"Outsider Money" is one of those spin phrases that annoys.
I thought most folks had a problem with "insiders" taking advantage.
Because people aren't forced to learn political science, a field which has a fairly solid consensus that money doesn't matter past a certain point in elections?
(It's basically up to name recognition, maybe a bit beyond that. The economy is the one really reliable predictor)
I live in Montana. Legalizing marijuana didn't make the ballot. But "repealing" CU did.
I hate the voters in this state.
ps- If Newculurrrrrrrr titties had a trillion dollars to spend, he still couldn't get elected president.
Yeah, didn't Carly Fiorina and Ross Perot prove spending money doesn't guarantee votes?
Perot would have won the election if Bush didn't split the vote, man.
Bah. That was Andre Marrou's year, man. He totally would have won without Perot.
What the fuck's with the spam filter? It's not letting me do anything.
Obama to fake assassination attempt to avoid election: Rumour
Tenn. politician apologizes for sending e-mail to legislature account
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/US.....55006.html
Yes it's a rumor, but I wouldn't put it past the sleazy, fucker.
Weird placement of that second, comma.
There's always some bullshit rumors about the current president faking a national security issue in order to avoid elections or term limits. I've been hearing the same thing every single presidential election for as long as I remember paying attention to politics (which, granted, has only been since around 1999 or so, but still...).
It goes back to at least 1972.
Not surprising, and I'd be unsurprised if there's been such rumors ever since Adams faced Jefferson.
He's not going to fake a national security issue or his assassination. For the latter, it won't be under his control; it'll be due to somebody who thinks he makes a better martyr than a candidate.
For the former, I've stated before that I think we'll be bombing someone by the new moon after the RNC. So, September 15th. What casus belli? I couldn't tell you. Hopefully, it won't be some fuck-up by the USN in the Persian Gulf/Hormuz.
Ranking the National Anthems.
http://www.grantland.com/story.....-olympics/
I always had Russia, Italy, and Brazil in my top 3.
What about Kazakhstan?
From last March:
Maria Dmitrienko won a gold medal for Kazakhstan on Thursday at the Arab Shooting Championships in Kuwait, but during the award ceremony the public address system broadcast the spoof anthem from the 2006 movie Borat, which offended many Kazakhs by portraying the country as backward and degenerate.
http://www.thestar.com/news/wo.....orts-event
That is freaking hilarious.
...at the Arab Shooting Championships...
So the Kazaks are Persians?
"The Arab Shooting Championships" sounds like a competition between the NATO countries and Israel.
^xactly!
Turks, actually, so I assume there must be a lot of Turko-Persian influence in everything Kazak.
I thought Borat was offensive simply for not being funny.
I still like the US anthem, but not when they neuter it by arranging it for strings and no percussion. If we strip out the lyrics the USSR/Russia anthem has a good tune, though
Thing that bugs the living shit out of me:
It is not "Or the ramparts" it is "o'er" as in an abbreviation of the word over.
WHY DOES EVERY FUCKING SINGER FUCK THAT UP? IT'S ONE GODDAMN EXTRA SOUND!!!
Anyone eating at Chick-fil-A today? Rham Emmanuel and the people of GLAAD did more to boost Dan Cathy's profits than any marketing team could have done. The lines were out the door when I drove past one today since all these different churches encouraged people to eat there in solidarity.
It was insane, the ones here had traffic all backed up.
Inane Kultur War really gins up the appetite.
Are you trying to say that the left stepped on its own dick yet again?
I'm eating there today for reasons unrelated to the kerfuffle. Hopefully there won't be long lines, given that it's a location on a godless secular university campus.
Also, GLAAD, in response to National Chick-fil-A Day, is asking for all gay couples to go to a Chick-fil-A and take a picture of themselves kissing and share it on Facebook. They do know that Chick-fil-A doesn't discriminate against customers, right?
If I were gay and feeling cheeky, I'd post pictures of me and my boyfriend eating at Chik-fil-A and post on GLAAD's wall, instead.
Alt text: we love to eat cock.
Heck, I was tempted to find someone to pretend to be gay with and do just that. I would have to wash my mouth out with oven cleaner afterward, but it would have been worth it.
Also, a bunch of fast food monkeys don't give a shit what you do in their restaurant as long as they don't have to clean up after it. "Oh, look, customer sucking face. Neat. Is my shift over yet?"
In their heads do they really expect the fry boys to yell:
'I do declare, I am but AGHAST at your behavior!'
I think GLAAD hasn't thought this through, and will be mightily disappointed when no one cares.
What most culture warriors don't appreciate: You most hated group has money, too. And it spends just as well as the money in your pocket. So suck it up, take their money, and laugh that while you secretly hate them, you're getting rich off of them.
Continuing my boycott on food I don't particularly enjoy, I did not eat at CFA. I hope my pro-gay-marriage friends don't get the idea that I give a shit about their little spat with the company.
This. I don't give a damn what the CEO of a company says.
Yep, this. I hate the pickly juice taste of their sandwiches, so I don't eat at CFA.
I hate the stale buns they serve at Arby's and wont eat there, either. It has nothing to do with the owner being a DNC supporter douche bag.
Neither love nor hatred keeps a belly fed

The Massachusetts state Legislature is calling for a federal constitutional amendment to reverse the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. Wouldn't that also be known as "repealing the First Amendment?"
California's legislature may be delusional--but at least they aren't grandiose!
Why would anyone outside of Massachusetts care about what the Massachusetts state legislature calls for?
I call for all Massachusetts state legislators to punch themselves in the face.
"Why would anyone outside of Massachusetts care about what the Massachusetts state legislature calls for?"
For the same reason we care if the people of Massachusetts put Elizabeth Warren in the Senate.

We need Hotspur to address the Masshole Legislature, apparently.
For never was a story of more woe --
Stop right there, Will. And let me tell you the story of the House of Stark.
I prefer this passage from Lear:
Fool: If thou wert my fool, nuncle, I'ld have thee beaten for being old before thy time.
KING LEAR: How's that?
Fool: Thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst been wise.
Default? Woo hoo! The two sweetest words in the English language: de-fault! De-fault! De-fault!
Who cares about Canada?
'Wayne Rooney looks like a fucking balloon with Weetabix crushed on top'
Oasis sounds like crap.
With Weetabix crushed on top.
Whatever a Weetabix might be.
Think English cuisine - then imagine what kind of breakfast cereal they would com eup with.... yeah.
oasis is one of my favorite bands (now they are broken up of course).
the brotherly squabbling got a little old though.
i have a lot of respect for noel, as a guitarist. he also gives proper respect to johnny marr, who imo is one of the great guitarists of all time.
i was actually thinking about getting tix to see Noel's new band in seattle, but i haven't read any reviews to see if they suck or are awesome.
don't look back in anger, imo, is one of the top rock and roll anthems of last century.

genius songwriting
I always knew there had to be some reason, other than just being a cop, why you suck so much.
Did Wayne fuck his boyfriend, or is he always that catty?
I used to think Montana was fucked up because of the Californicators, but there are plenty of native Montanans who are rabidly anti-business, anti-capitalism, and anti-private property. The Copper King Wars never ended, apparently.
And they hates them some "Outside Money". Unless it comes in the form of federal subsidies.
The douchebag quotient of Montanans shot up significantly when Ted Turner moved in.
For folks in professions like medicine or the law - is there any way to stop fuckers friends from asking for free advice? And if advice is given because, say, it is family or a longtime friend asking, what do you do when they don't thank you?
Because I'm sick of answering dog training questions for free, but I become seriously empurpled when I don't get thanked.
The mature option is to never give free advice again. What are some immature and/or passive-aggressive options?
Is there a simple way to turn a dog into a murderous beast with a few 'secret' commands?
Because that is something you could do.
"I'll tell you anything you want to know, but only after I get a free shot at punching you in the junk. Deal? Hey? Where are you going?"
Ask them for their tax info for the 1099 form your accountant has to prepare for your charitable contribution.
I have an easy out as a new lawyer, I just say i'm inexperienced and stupid. Also, something about ethics or something.
"Its complicated and not something I can answer without spending a ton of time on it."
And if they don't respect that, fall back to SF's position.
One fucker friend even launched right into her question without even asking anything about how things are going in my life, etc. Then proceeded not to thank me when I gave her the info.
Fucking manners - how do they work?
Perhaps you should choose different fuckers...I mean friends.
These are the people who enslaved educators because they had a valuable skill. These are the people who are enslaving doctors because they too have a skill.
I suppose one answer is, "usually, I charge _____ for questions like that." And leave it there. What's the worst that happens? You never have to deal with some of these fuckers friends again?
Take out the "usually".
Perhaps you need one of these t-shirts:

Just change it to "dog".
Subtly bad or impossible to follow advice. Potentially self-destructive in the long run, though.
Send them a bill?
Former Oakland Athletics slugger Jose Canseco has filed for bankruptcy protection in Nevada.

Should retired military dogs get medical benefits?
http://spousebuzz.com/blog/201.....s-too.html
Fuck no. If you can't pay the bills for their upkeep, don't fucking adopt a retired MWD. Don't take food out of my kid's mouth to support your poor choice.
Fuckers.
My first thought was "oh fer f$#@'s sake" but if "The bill costs no taxpayer dollars, sets up a charitable foundation to assist with transportation costs and allows people to donate frequent flier miles to pay for the working dog's transport" is true - meh, go ahead.
That's a big 'if'.
1) i support gay marriage, and gay rights in general, but nothing has made me want to eat at a fast food restaurant more (to say fuck you to those statist assholes) than this chicago rubbish. free speech matters whether it's overturning a cop being fired for selling "smoke 'em don't choke em " t-shirts after a LOD death (thanks ARBITRATION!) or overruling these chicago thoughtcrime (tm) enforcers. my prediction: this policy in chicago will be found unconstitutional by the scotus if it gets that far. granted, that's the volokh consensus, and i am almost always in agreement with the volokh consensus (tm)
2) california sucks. they routinely ignore all sorts of civil rights , to include the 2nd amendment, their constitution sucks even more (ours is way better in WA) and their case law gives cops WAY too much power. so, it's surprises me not that the feds are shutting down clinics in cali. cali is a shitty place from a libertarian perspective.
Your employer firing you for saying things has nothing to do with free speech.
when your employer IS THE GOVERNMENT and you are engaging in political speech, it does.
prof. volokh and others have covered this extensively.
example: if you work for subway and walk around saying "subway sucks" while not at work, can they fire you?
yes.
if i walk around OFF DUTY and criticize the police chief, dept. policy etc. can they fire me?
no.
distinctions: 1) govt.employer 2) political speech
again, noted 1st amendment advocates and extensive case law supports my position
which is why the arbitrator overturned.
note that in general, a LOT of stuff is different when comparing govt. employers and private employers
No, they're wrong. It's not a free speech issue. It's a reasonable policy and may be a contract issue (in fact should be), but it's not a free speech. As much as you think you're owed a ton of taxpayer money every week, being denied that isn't a violation of your rights.
again, i am arguing actual law. you are arguing normatively.
you may WANT it to be "reasonable policy" but under the law , it is not
so, iow, if you are saying "they are wrong, i WANT the law to be X", then fine. that's an opinion. but i disagree.
if you are saying "no, they are wrong, the law says X" then you are simply wrong, as a matter of fact.
are you arguing normatively or are you that mistaken on the law?
No, they are wrong. People may act like the law says X, but that doesn't magically make the law change. The First Amendment isn't about keeping your job. Just because you got a bunch of your buddies to suck your cock doesn't chance that fact.
In the same way that Obamacare isn't constitutional.
i disagree.
if a police dept. could fire you for making an off duty political comment, there would be no justice
fortunately, there is justice.
the first amendment is about restricting GOVERNMENT, so yes... it applies to police dept's
officers do not give up their right to free speech (off duty) and it would be an unjust world if we did
but we dont
thank god the legal system, and those upholding our constitutional rights aren't so dismissive of 1st amendment rights as you are
Try that in the DoD...perhaps you had best make a distinction in "Government Employers".
military members give up a whole host of rights that cops (and most other govt. employees don't)
military members, for example, have EXTENSIVE free speech restrictions regarding statements about the commander in chief, etc.
you are correct. that is a distinction worth noting. i should have said "civilian, and not MILITARY govt. employees have these rights"
Your problem is faddy diets
Gay marriage supporters do realize that they will lose support if they are seen as being jackasses to people like CFA or forcing churches to marry them, correct?
Correct?
No pun intended....or maybe it is....but the majority of gays that I know live to stir shit.
Perhaps the point is to make opposing them so uncomfortable that you may as well give them what they want.
"The Olympics will decide what sort of strategies athletes are allowed to use, thank you very much."
It is partially the fault of the Badminton governing body for the format of the competition which encouraged this behavior. From what I read, these teams were not only notputting their max effort, but were delberately playing atrociously. That violates the spirit of the Games as being a demonstration of top competition in that sport and cheats the spectators of what they paid to watch. So, yeah, the people running the Olympics have legitimate authority and reason to disqualify those teams.
When will their be a libertarian defense of the Black Sox?
Yeah, that was just like jockeying for position in a tournament so you could ultimately win the whole thing.
