Michigan Anti-Abortion Law Sparks Sex Boycott, Vagina Fear
It's gonna be a dry summer in Michigan, boys.
Michigan lawmaker Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) is calling for a statewide sex boycott after the state legislature's lower house passed a slate of bills designed to restrict access abortion services—under the guise of protecting women's health.
"We're launching a war on women. Stop having sex with us, gentlemen, and I ask women to boycott men until they stop moving this through the House."
The 45-page cockblock in question aims to regulate nearly every aspect of reproductive health services, from rigid restrictions on health centers to targeting physicians who provide abortion services. Taking a cue from restrictive legislation passed in Virginia, Alabama, and Georgia, one of the nation's most severe anti-abortion bill burdens both women and health care providers with onerous regulations by:
- Criminalizing all abortions after 20 weeks: Under the omnibus package, women in Michigan could face criminal charges for seeking abortion services after 20 weeks of pregnancy, even in cases of rape or when the woman's health is at risk. Since fetal abnormality scans are not performed until about 20 weeks into the pregnancy, Michigan women will not be able to explore abortion options even if their child is at risk for Down Syndrome or other conditions—at least, not without facing legal woes and fines.
- Restricting reproductive health services for rural women: The legislation requires physicians to be present when prescribing the abortion pill or emergency contraceptives—meaning no more over-the-phone prescribing. For women in rural areas, what's easily accomplished by a phone call with a doctor may soon require hours of travel to meet face-to-face with a physician. (This, despite the fact that recent studies have demonstrated that telemedicine is a safe and effective way to provide medication abortions.) The morning-after-pill is more effective the sooner its taken, which means the bill not only makes it difficult to terminate unwanted pregnancies, it also makes it harder to prevent them.
- Regulating abortion clinics into oblivion: The legislation requires health centers that perform more than six abortions a month to be equipped with operational surgery rooms, even if they don't provide surgical abortions. The result: many reproductive health centers will close due to lack of adequate funds.
Supporters of the bill maintain that the legislation is designed to protect women and their health. What remains unclear, however, is exactly how tricky regulations, threats of criminal sanction, and unnecessary equipment will help achieve that end.
What Michigan women need more than ever is an open, honest discussion of the issue at hand—but even that seems impossible for the Great Lake State. Michigan state Rep. Lisa Brown (D-West Bloomfield) was prohibited from speaking in the legislature on its final day in session after using the word vagina in a floor speech on Thursday. Because there's definitely no good reason to use the appropriate medical term for a female reproductive organ during a hearing on abortions, right? Perhaps next time, Brown can show a little self-restraint and use an appropriate euphemism: "Mr. Speaker, I'm flattered you're all so interested in my furburger. But no means no."

Just call them "reasonable restrictions" on the right to abortion.
Regardless of what stance one takes on abortion, I must admit: this is good theater.
With any luck, one of those cuntfests will spring up on the capitol grounds.
Cuntfest? This sort of language is why there are so few female feminists.
"It would be a beautiful day for a woman to be able to say, 'Thank you. Thank you for calling me a cunt,"
Where is Ken Shultz?
I don't have the **Kunt Shultz Signal** bookmarked. Sorry.
I got ya covered.
It's gonna be a dry summer in Michigan, boys.
Without seeing any of the women involved I am reminded of an old prohibition poster to which someone here linked. The caption read "Lips which touch alcohol will not touch ours" with a picture of several, very unattractive women.

I like the cut of this intern's jib.

In the picture provided with this article the 3 women on the right aren't bad.

I'll bet you $5,000 that this woman will also deny the existence of pussy power.
Not possible. Someone who screams "WAR ON WOMEN!!!" logically inconsistent? Never happen.

So this is Lysistrata with the cast being an entire state? How droll.
Melanie fucked up big time by not making this reference. But, I mean, what do you really expect from UM grads?
I can't believe reason allowed someone who isn't deeply conversant with ancient Greek comedy to contribute to this site. I mean, really, reason, what happened to your standards? Well, besides Cavanaugh, of course.
Let us cavort like the Greeks of old! You know the ones I mean.
I trust the orgy pit has been scraped and buttered.

You know, it really was much better when Virginia Postrel ran things....
You will most likely get an ultrasound scan every four weeks in your second trimester, at each antenatal appointment.
I am calling bullshit on your 20 week ultrasound claim.
Also how does Europe deal with this? Late term abortions are not as lenient there as in the US.
Europe is a big place, Josh. They are probably more lenient here in Czech Republic than in the US.
PS, I was quite amused to see that Jamie Lewis linked to you on his batshit crazy powerlifting blog (which is never safe for work).
Heh, I didn't see that, cool. I haven't been keeping up with the fitness blogs much lately but I've corresponded with Jamie for quite a while and he's actually a really nice guy--and a total badass.
Oh yeah, I've always liked him. Anyone who can pick up that much heavy shit and insult that many people is worth knowing.
Europe is a big place, Josh. They are probably more lenient here in Czech Republic than in the US.
UK allows into the 24th week but you have to show risk to health
that the pregnancy has not exceeded its twenty-fourth week and that the continuance of the pregnancy would involve risk, greater than if the pregnancy were terminated, of injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman or any existing children of her family; or
France
Abortion is legal on-request in France in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy
Germany
Abortion in Germany is technically permitted in the first trimester upon condition of mandatory counseling and a waiting period, and in rare exceptional cases afterwards.
Spain
Abortion in Spain was fully legalized on July 5, 2010. It is currently available on request during the first trimester.
Czech Republic (they are not more lenient by the way)
Abortion in the Czech Republic is legally allowed up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, with medical indications up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, in case of grave problems with fetus at any time.

Michigan does not look out of line.
Are the feminists here crying that Europe, their socialist utopia, is engaged in a war on women? Because they say that shit here with even the smallest of abortion regulation propositions here in the states.
Fetal abormalities can be (and are) more conclusively determined by chorionic villus sampling. (I have performed this procedure.)
You are wise to call bullshit. Ms. Kruvelis has an dull axe in need of sharpening at the public's expense.
A quick Google search of different methods for determining fetal abnormalities.
Better (and much less invasive) genetic tests are being developed to determine congenital abnormalities as well. Ron Bailey recently wrote about this.
Sorry, ladies of Derpistan. You forgot to speak up when the rules changed to "if we're paying for your healthcare, we have the right to control your choices." They came for the smokers, they came for the transfat eaters, they came for the 20 oz pop drinkers, they came for the porn actors not wearing condoms, now they're headed your way and no one gives a shit.
Also, good luck with your sex boycott, I see that lasting all of about 5 minutes.

When the fuck does that ever happen?
But... I thought abstinence programs were a ridiculous idea?
"explore abortion options even if their *child* is at risk for Down Syndrome or other conditions" [emphasis added]
Doesn't Melanie Kruvelis know the first thing about good prochoice public relations? Don't use the word "child" to describe what's in the womb when you're talking about the benefits of abortion. Use distancing terms like "fetal abnormalities," "procedure" or "reproductive health services."
Why is this considered a male versus female issue? Go take a survery of the hardcore anti-abortion advocates and you'll find they are overwhelmingly women. Curiously enough, hardcore pro-abortion advocates are also women. This is clearly a women-vs-women issue.
No. 1, don't mess with the narrative.
No. 2, there are men and women on both sides, but without prolife women, the prolife movement would be more than cut in half.
And without prochoice men, where would the choicers be?
At least men like Edward Kennedy and Bob Packwood were purely and completely disinterested in their advocacy of abortion.
I wonder how many men at an abortion clinic protest are there because their wives dragged them.
Probably half of the ones who aren't just looking for easy, consequence-free chicks.
Yes, but the Wrong women are suffering from false consciousness.
While this 'slate of bills' is odious, does anyone think that it may cause liberals to rethink the overweening regulatory state in regards to healthcare?
No. With the notion that medical care is a "right", and codified by Roe v. Wade that a discrete surgical/medical procedure is a "right", the cognitive dissonance is astounding, actually. It's also my main objection to that SCOTUS decision (though there are a few others).
Anyone who believes medical care is not a "right" also needs to include this procedure as well. Try that with both sides of the aisle in addition to your observation, Paul.
Heads explode, and quickly, too.
In fairness to the SCOTUS on Roe V. Wade, do you really see it as a discrete medical procedure being a right, or that the pregnant women have the right to seek whatever means they can to terminate a pregnancy? For instance, in the future when a woman can walk into a TSA backscatter-like device and terminate a pregnancy using cosmic rays, that should still fall under right-to-abortion. The fact that it's not occurring using a knife and traditional instruments ends in the same outcome.
I see it as a discrete medical procedure, nothing more and nothing less, in this context. Once this was codified into law via penumbra, then it becomes a burden on the public. If this medical procedure is a "right", why wouldn't any other medical procedure and medical care also not be a "right" and paid for at the behest of the public?
A woman can do whatever she wishes absent a second actor, which is why I have (little) problem with Plan B, which I would recommend prior to implantation. It's the second actor and the public's paying for it is to what I most object here, putting personal moral considerations aside.
For instance, in the future when a woman can walk into a TSA backscatter-like device and terminate a pregnancy using cosmic rays, that should still fall under right-to-abortion.
Which would also be a discrete medical procedure, just like an X-ray or PET scan. Is there a "right" for those medical procedures to be paid for by the public?
Also, in this day and age, prevention of pregnancy has never been better, and I wholeheartedly recommend IUD's. They are the most cost-efficient and consistently reliable (read: not subject to user error) method of birth control on the market, and the only one I endorse that should be paid for by an insurance carrier.
But I guess I don't see a new ruling from the supreme court necessary to cover cosmic ray abortion.
Look, I have no disagreement that liberals/lefties in general have been profoundly confused by the definition of a 'right'. I see a right as a right to pursue-- at your own effort, expense an ability-- a given activity. Be that free speech, bearing arms, etc. Not to mention some rights rights which include some 'freedom froms' which are also guaranteed, such as freedom from unreasonable search and seizure etc.
So yes, there are plenty of modern liberals (a few of which I'm personally acquainted) who believe that a 'right' to an abortion also means the right to have it provided for you by your neighbor, Bob.
Extending that profound liberal confusion, the 'right' of abortion also means free birth control. You'll get no disagreement with me there.
It just seems to me that Roe V. Wade by itself simply guaranteed a woman's right to pursue reproductive choice, without the interference of state busybodies inserting themselves (ha!) into the procedure.
"at your own effort, expense and ability-- "
It's so hard to corral a living constitution while I'm at work.
responding to Paul @ 7:00, last sentence
I would agree with you if that was only motivation behind it. However, (and when you mean "reproductive choice", spell it out please; I don't care for buzzwords) because pregnancy is easily averted with much more inexpensive (and much less invasive) means, the discrete medical procedure itself is mostly unnecessary, absent very specific conditions. Pregnancy tests are OTC. The Pill should be dispensed by a pharmacist (or OTC), and in most cases a doctor is not needed. Same with Plan B, and I would have little problem with the "vending machine" suggested for dispensation. I also lay a shitload of blame on men for eschewing condoms. There are even surgical procedures to guarantee that pregnancy cannot happen (and these are reversible). It simply comes down to, in the vast majority of situations, personal responsibility.
By the state inserting itself into medicine proper, then the procedure as well is subject to any and all regulation at the state level. The fedgov should never have gotten involved.
If Planned Parenthood wants to keep in business, then they can do it without public money, and getting public funds was ultimately the goal of the Roe v. Wade-sters. I also would not interfere with another doctor who has no ethical or moral constraints with performing the procedure.
I have performed one, Paul, and I won't do it again, ever, and I will go to the mat for the Conscience Clause.
Though the surgical techniques of reversal getting better, chances of it not working are still 1 in 4, aren't they?
I'm a liberal. I don't support the Bush tax cuts for the rich. I don't support Citizen's United.
Even so, I would not support a law that said you have to stick a probe up your butt before you can claim the carried-interest write-off. I would not support a law that said you have to see a counselor and wait three days before you give $100 Million to a superpac.
There is a right way of meeting the opposition and a wrong way. So-called "pro-lifers" seem to have decide that Roe v. Wade was such an outrage that anything goes and there is no such thing as a dirty trick anymore.
These roundabout attacks on abortions mirror the worst excesses of the "gun control" movement, even in their particulars. Waiting periods. Nonsensical restrictions on providers. Jurisdiction-specific barriers that are inconsequential for anybody with the means to cross the state line.
The "late-term abortion" is the "UZI/AK-47 Assault Weapon" of the abortion debate: something rarely used, and even less rarely abused, that becomes a handy tool for manipulating public opinion in an environment of superficial and uninforming newsmedia coverage.
The excesses of the gun control movement eventually backfired. They lost the assault weapons ban and saw a wave of shall-issue laws sweep the country. I hope the same fate awaits these no-trick-is-too-dirty prolifers.
Fuck off, Gabe.
Ladies and gentlemen, that is the sound of a nerve being hit.
Who's Gabe? I'm losing track of the troll memes around here. I need to study up on the new product!
Gabe is Mary. Or maybe vice versa. The game around here is to insinuate that you know the personal identities of commenters as a veiled threat. Classy, as always.
Fuck off, Warty
Huh?
Gabe's another obsessive troll, nearly identical in style to our beloved Mary. He used to post as Danny, among others. It's best to ignore him or insult him.
Hey Gabe, go fuck your mother, you stupid cunt.
Imagine that. Our resident pussy little statist scumbag is a parasite government lawyer.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The game around here is to insinuate that people are pussies. Classy.
You buffoon. The game is to insinuate that pussies are people. And it is classy!
Well, you're a gigantic pussy, but you're not fully human, are you?
Fully?!?
I can agree with this.
"wait three days before you give $100 Million to a superpac"
I suppose that if every 100 million donation to a superpac led directly and inevitably to the death of a living human being, it would be regulated this way.
No, that would be insipid. And you just prove my point. Abortion is "murder" inside your pea skull, so anything goes. If you could pass a law requiring women to memorize the Lord's Prayer before getting an abortion you would. Because you have no sense of propriety in seeking your political objectives.
Boiled down to its essence, your argument is that abortion is OK. The rest is invective.
It's a shame you weren't aborted, RAL.
He didn't say anything about "murder", he said "death of a living human being". You're the one jumping to label others. I believe life begins at conception, but I understand that others may see it differently. You, on the other hand, want to brand everyone with a different opinion as if we're looking to legislate the Bible. Please don't lecture us on the "right way" to oppose something when you label every comment from the opposition as theocracy.
Murder is the premeditated killing of a human being.
He absolutely did say something about murder, he (and you) just don't have the stones to make the outright accusation because you're afraid of being labeled.
Listen to your own advice asshole.
The law defines murder as the intentional killing of a human being.
Yes, he did say something about murder, he was just too cowardly to make the outright accusation.
Please learn to read before you incorrectly make claims that someone didn't do something they obviously did.

So every time someone considers a fetus a human being, you'll connect the dots and read it as accusing women of murder? Got it, nice we can have a civil conversation with you open-minded and reasonable pro-choicers.
This article is fucking retarded. No one involved with the bill in question (some of whom were *gasp* women) is waging a "war on women". Moreover, the above seriously mischaracterizes the law in question: none of the horror stories which are alluded to in the article have happened in VA. As far as regulation goes, these facilities are far less regulated than the medical industry in general. While I'm not in favor of most regulation, I find it convenient that these folks are running out to protest some rules for sucking a child out their vaginas, while not making a peep about the regulations that bind routine medical procedure.
What Michigan women need more than ever is an open, honest discussion of the issue at hand?but even that seems impossible for the Great Lake State. Michigan state Rep. Lisa Brown (D-West Bloomfield) was prohibited from speaking in the legislature on its final day in session after using the word vagina in a floor speech on Thursday.
Perhaps she wasn't prohibited for using the word "vagina," but for being a vapid bitch with nothing of substance to offer.
If every woman in America who values her reproductive freedom carried a handgun in her purse and a rifle in her home, it would certainly give the anti-choice lobby a pause. The right to keep and bear arms makes ALL other rights, including reproductive rights, possible.

I really like the sound of that dude. Wow.

In the same video, Rep. Lisa Brown, D-West Bloomfield, speaks strongly against the anti-abortion bills.
"It regulates business, requiring exorbitant insurance policies to be purchased, which will result in clinics closing doors, causing people to lose their jobs and denying women their constitutional rights," she said.
Amazing how these "all regulation is awesome!" liberals suddenly turn all libertarian when it comes to abortions.
http://www.mlive.com/politics/.....akers.html
And a follow-up, Brown pulls the "Bu-bu-bu-HOLOCAUST!!!" card:
I was either banned for being Jewish and rightfully pointing out that HB 5711 was forcing contradictory religious beliefs upon me and my religion. Or is it because I used the word 'vagina,' which is an anatomically, medically correct term?
http://www.mlive.com/politics/.....wheth.html
"Stop having sex with us, gentlemen, and I ask women to boycott men until they stop moving this through the House."
If the women opposed to this were capable of that kind of self-discipline, they would have little need of abortion services in the first place.
