Reason Writers at CNN.com: Matt Welch Calls for Journalists to Treat Warren Buffett With Skepticism
Writing over at CNN.com, Reason Editor in Chief Matt Welch makes the case that Warren Buffett, like Deep Throat of Watergate fame, is given a pass by journalists because he tells them what they want to hear. Here's how the piece ends:
I'm not one who thinks that Warren Buffett needs to write a $10 billion check to the government in order to prove his policy sincerity. But it is worth noting that his big 2006 media breakthrough came not by pledging his fortune to the U.S. Treasury, but to private charity. It's clear which vehicle he finds the most effective use of his personal money.
Which suggests an ultimate test for raising the federal tax burden in a way pleasing to Warren Buffett, Barack Obama, and most of the fourth estate: Are we currently getting our $3.8 trillion worth of services? Has the rapidly increasing price tag of government -- from $1.9 trillion in Bill Clinton's last proposed budget -- come with a commensurate increase in quality?
If not, then we need to be cutting and improving government, not having it swallow up more of the private sector. If so, then that's an argument the media should be having, instead of just uncritically high-fiving a billionaire with massive vested interests.

Somebody left a huge deuce in your Reason Cruise cabin toilet, Matt.
Vote for who, now?
Lately I've been hearing about librarians. They're all the rage and we should vote them into office.
But Rupert Giles isn't a natural-born American.
Libertarianism is a suicide pact. Don't fall for it.
Whadaya mean? I didn't promise to shoot myself.
As should Christie's, and I think the Governor's recommendations hold more merit.
Exactly. Christie was disputing Piers Morgan's claim that Warren Buffett is begging to pay more taxes by pointing out that he can do that any time he wants with no begging required.
If Mr. Buffett wants to rephrase his "recommendations" as being about wanting OTHER PEOPLE to have to pay higher taxes, not just himself, then he should do that. The whole "let me pay higher taxes" thing is just a canard.
If not, then we need to be cutting and improving government, not having it swallow up more of the private sector. If so, then that's an argument the media should be having, instead of just uncritically high-fiving a billionaire with massive vested interests.
Oh Matt, your na?vet? is cute.
The comments on CNN are acceptably ragey, but imagine if Welch wrote for HuffPo.
Virtually every comment is about how fat Christie is. The left clearly has the monopoly an intelligent, insightful, productive political commentary.
...but don't dare call Michael Moore "fat". That's hate speech.
Buffett's sincerity would gain greater currency if he did not rely on misinformation regarding his tax rate and that of his "secretary", an employee who based on the tax rates given, makes somewhere in the quarter-mil to half-mil range annually.
"his "secretary", an employee who based on the tax rates given, makes somewhere in the quarter-mil to half-mil range annually."
I'm wondering if this info isn't available in the Berk Hath filings.
I wouldn't doubt that Buffett is 'generous' with compensation to those close to the center, so numbers like that wouldn't surprise me. He's also *very* conscious of tax law; his "income" from Berk Hath is laughable; his actual compensation is, well, enough to keep him from going through TSA when he wishes to go somewhere.
Warren Buffet has much more credibility than this magazine. How so?!?!? Buffett didn't deny there was an economic crisis to score moral political talking points, but this magazine did. In an interview with Thom Hartmann, Mr. Welch insinuated that he rarely made more than thirty thousand in a year, so why should tech workers expect to be paid highly for their skills. Real nice. Here you go. Enjoy playing class warfare folks, just don't get thuggish on people who can call you on it, like teachers, students, unions, oops too late.

call you on it
That's gold. No, much more precious than gold. Darling even. You don't know what constitutes an argument so there is really no where to begin with where you went wrong. Not only is it not right, it is not even wrong. Typical shrike.
I fear you may be arguing with someone you made up in your head, a sign of a collectivist. Oh, im also totally right, but i understand if conjuring up some liberal in your head makes things easier for you.
Lulz. As if we haven't done this dance a hundred times before.
LOL
Yes, let's believe those who have been proven wrong before, yep, that's the path to success.

"Oh, im also totally right"
No, you aren't even wrong.
Are you having trouble making sense?

WIH was that vid supposed to show? That you have a single-digit IQ?
Hartmann goes on about how other countries subsidize education and *never* even considers that a recipient of same could well be worthless.
What a pack of crap.
No, no, no! Don't you understand that ethnic nepotism is more important than free-enterprise?
You lost everyone with sensibility, when you typed the name "Thom Hartmann".
Wow, the ignornace is strong with Mr. Fify. Are you aware that this video was posted in hit and run, that's how i found it the last time. So, is it safe to assume that you pay no attention to Mr. Welch for typing and appearing on his show?
Unreal, not anyone can dispute what I've said, just pout and engage in collectivist talking points.
Who's the collectivist, eh? Me, or some schmuck praising Thom Fucking Hartmann?
Fuck off.
Maybe more people would listen to my show if I changed my name to that...
Please quote the exact line where i praised him, please. If it's not there, then you are acting like a collectivist. A group think, knee jerk reaction to someone with different beliefs than you, it sounds pretty collectivist to me. All i did was mention an interview that was posted on this very website.
No, no, no! Don't you know that ethnic nepotism is more important than free enterprise?

Hmm..my posts seem to be marked as spam.
Why are my posts being marked as spam?
It seems my handle is being marked as spam. Fucking squirrels.
I got a post regarding Gleick rejected earlier today; links to NYT and Pacific Institute.
Seems r.com spam detectors are a bit arbitrary.
What's up with this Christie guy? He's all fat and shit. Instead of balancing the budget, he should be balancing his diet, cuz he's fatter 'n' fuck. You know why he struck down the gay marriage bill? It's because he's a fatty fat fat. He probably was afraid the gays would take all the cupcakes before he could eat them.
God Republicans are stupid.
Insufficiently vitriolic.
Okay, let's make Michael Moore and Chris Christie fight to the death in a pit, and make the winner devour the remains of the loser.
