DFW Reason Readers: Come Hear Me Talk About Liquor Laws
Tonight I will be talking about "Loony Liquor Laws" at a Liberty on the Rocks event in Euless, which is about midway between Dallas and Fort Worth. Among other examples of alcohol-control insanity, I will discuss Pennsylvania's "wine kiosks" (one of which can be seen on the right) and Texas restrictions on beer marketing that were recently overturned on First Amendment grounds. The event is open to the public and admission is free. Here are the details:
Liberty on the Rocks
8 to 11 p.m., Thursday, February 2
210 South Industrial Boulevard
Euless, TX 76040

Let’s do this!
I think we should take bets on who rather is. You know she’s coming- we’ll just have to follow the clues.
I sense a fun night.
Have fun being stabbed.
I’ve got kevlar…
I didn’t realize she was in our area.
That sucks and makes me want to move.
Well, maybe she doesn’t…
Eesh, Rather’s from D/FW?!
I sense many splitting headaches tomorrow morning.
I lived in Dallas for a few years. Compared to my home state of Louisiana, they have some goofy liquor laws. Liquor stores must close at 9 but you can buy alcohol at bars until 2 (to ensure there are more drunk drivers on the road I presume). I loved it when the bartenders gleefully sold you beer at 1:55 am for last call only to have the meathead bouncer declare two minutes later to “put your drinks down and get the hell out!” Gotta love Texas hospitality.
Unless you’re at an after hours club where you BYO into the early morning!
My #1 pet peeve: No alcohol sales on sunday until noon. I HATE that stupid shit.
No shit. I mean, what’s the fun of going to church unless you’re loaded, right?
what is this “church” you speak of?
It’s a place where people with no inner sense of right and wrong go to have it be explained to them by someone who interprets a book purported to have been written by an invisible man.
man, and people do that SOBER?!
Only because of the law.
If bars were allowed to be open Sunday morning it would be a totally different story.
Why do you think those laws exist?
Because people were showing up to church plastered.
I thought it was because my wife wanted me to mow the yard and THEN drink…
No alcohol sales on sunday until noon.
Why are you waking up before noon on a Sunday?
Buying for the football games! I shouldn’t have to plan that out hte night before!
A worse law, IMHO, is that stores that sell spirits can’t be open on Sunday at all. Funny thing is that all of the liquor store owners I’ve talked to absolutely love that regulation.
Sounds like a fun talk.
Gives them a day off.
Round here car dealerships can’t be open on Sunday. For most managers that’s their only day off.
I don’t care about their day off. That’s their deal. they can close if they want. I care about them being forced to close.
I’m just explaining their point of view, that’s all.
Don’t shoot the messenger.
I don’t care about messengers not wanting to be shot…
You must be some kinda gay boy. So yea, get the hell out!
Euless? Why???
middle ground. We were meeting in Ft Worth for a while, but get more people in the middle of the metroplex.
we’re open to different, better, future venues.
Dallas proper, or even better, it’s northern suburbs would be nice.
Nobody gives a shit what hicks from Ft. Worthless think anyway ^_^
The colony?
I’m down.
At least you can buy liquor there.
+1 for the colony
We’ll figure it out at the meeting tonight!
If GBT/DNT doesn’t run through it, I’m not driving to it. Fuck 183.
well, you don’t HAVE to go on 183- and technically 121 and 183 are the same there…
euless more like useless.
also, be careful their cops are pretty dwi happy
DWI happy? Are they contracting Addison PD?
places like grapevine, euless, and southlake are heavy on that shit because theres fuck all else policing to do. its all suburbs and strip malls. mcmansions as far as the eye can see
unless you’re on the southlake carroll football team, in which case just flash a ring and you’re good to go
Of course, because alcohol was such a pain to come by in Big D, everyone did a lot more blow and x. Law of unintended consequences anyone?
Louisiana screws pretty much everything that can be screwed up but for how it handles alcohol. I can walk around town (New Orleans) with a beer in my hand (as the out-of-town vulgate tends to do) and not be bothered by anyone, much less the police. And no riots break out. Mr. Sullum should look at New Orleans’ alcohol freedom as a case study and argument against the people who tend to think that allowing people complete autonomy doesn’t actually end up in chaos. People tend to act properly once allowed to be free as it’s simply part of the social order of things.

Is it possible that they don’t get anything else right because they’re so drunk all the time?
Possible, yes.
disclaimer: I’m not claiming to like that possibility.
Huh. Never thought about it like that before. Maybe because I’m drunk most of the time.
Does this place have any decent drafts? I’m not driving all the way to Euless to drink disgusting beer, even though the food sounds good.
They’ve got some- nothing micro or craft, but not just bud and corona.
I only drink beer on sundays- I’m a hard liquor dude the other nights of the week- so I can’t testify under oath about this though.
I only drink beer on days ending in ‘y’.
I used to be the same sarcasmic- but then I got fatter and fatter and fatter.
That’s what’s happening to me.
Perhaps its time to cut back to only drinking beers on, say, days that begin with ‘S’, and go to whiskey for the rest.
It doesn’t help that I brew my own, which means there’s almost always something frothy on tap in the basement.
Though I tend to run out Summertime when it gets too warm to brew and my Winter stash runs out. Only drinking it on weekends might stretch it out to August.
I save it for sundays- whiskey or vodka for the weeknights…
I’m thinking about starting to microbrew. I never even liked beer until last summer, and my tastes are still very selective and particular. Unfortunately they’re also very expensive so I figure I could save a few bucks doing it myself and have a good time too. Thinking extra sweet dark weizenbock…
Foreman’s General Store in Colleyville. Talk to that dude and he’ll get you everything you need and LOVE to help you out the entire way. highly recommend.
Sweet! Thanks for the rec. I know there’s a homebrew store up in Richardson too but don’t know how good it is.
This is all you need to get started.

For each loony law, be sure to ask (or address) “Who benefits from it?”
The Baptist and the Bootlegger.
Jacob rocked the house tonight!
