Americans Reluctant to Extend Unemployment Benefits to 99 Weeks, Open to 52 Weeks
At the end of December, Congress will determine whether to continue extending unemployment benefits beyond 26 weeks (about 6 months) to 99 weeks (about 23 months).
As of November 2011, national unemployment stood at 8.6 percent; nearly half have been unemployed for 27 weeks or more. (See BLS estimates for unemployment). States typically provide up to 26 weeks' worth of unemployment benefits, and the federal government has provided the extension up to 99 weeks. (For more discussion click here.)
The December 2011 Reason-Rupe poll asked 1,200 Americans on both landline and mobile phones how long they thought unemployment benefits should be. About a third of Americans prefer the states' six month limit, and about another third believe it should extend seven months to 18 months. A little less than a quarter believe benefits should extend 99 weeks or more. In the sum, the majority (60 percent) reaches consensus at about one year or less. This means that Congress would probably get the most support for extending unemployment benefits to 52 weeks, rather than 99 weeks.
To better understand what Americans think about unemployment, the poll asked whether they thought those unemployed over a year were trying hard to find jobs but couldn't, or if they could find jobs if they wanted to. Americans are divided, with 48 percent believing those unemployed over a year are trying hard to find jobs and 44 percent believing the unemployed could find jobs if they wanted to.
When somebody loses their job, for how many months should they receive unemployment benefits? (OPEN-ENDED)

You're so full of crap.
any poll from this magazine is suspect in my eyes, they completely shape facts and talking points around their agenda. how illogical can they be? I don't know, ask them since they blame Obama for the state of the economy, and expect the unemployed to just get a job out of thin air.
Bunch of thugs
because my grandfather knew I liked playing football, he has always wanted to buy me a shirt, so I can wear the same as other children to play his shirt because we are not very wealthy family, my grandfather bought me this shirt in order to spend almost a month's time to pay back the money out of picking up plastic bottles I bought, I put a shirt smashes, I really do not know how to do! "After listening to the little boy, then I finally know why he cried so sad, he had this shirt is so hard to come by, next to the children heard his words are one do not speak!
Extend it indefinately. Stop pretending that people lose their jobs because it's always their fault. That everyone is always employed. The money paid is enough to make ends meet. Who's buying the lie that people hate having steady jobs that pay well and guarentee their future. That's up there with pretending the people with real power always look out for the little guy. When you need and qualify it's there. Unless someone's got a real job to offer, point you in the direction of or genuinely help you genuinely increase your chance of getting then screw off. More than anything would those that pretend they have a real complaint just stfu. Stop pretending no one can see what really goes on the world. Make those in government jobs pay more tax and tax the mega mega real rich. Bill Gates earning his money is different than some paper money thief. Tax and jail the paper theives.
You Americans are so mean - every other civilised first world country has unlimited unemployment benefits, subject to certain tests.
No wonder the USA is so violent - you just don't care about each other.
It's sad to see how America is declining right in front of the rest of the world
It is a documented economic fact that extending unemployment keeps the rate high. How did America form and grow? By creating new industries and new/better ways to meet customers' needs. I see plenty of Help Wanted signs in my industrial park but apparently many just want to collect and then work unreported.
The people with real power always look out for the little guy. What a crap!!!!!

The trouble with tolls is they never go away. I'm OK with a toll that sunsets when the bonds to finance the project road are paid off. Unfortunately, once the road's paid for, the toll just becomes another endless tax typically used for everything but road maintenance. - - ????? 2017
