At FreedomFest in July, Reason's Matt Welch talked with journalist and school choice advocate Michelle Bernard. Bernard explains how she got into the school choice movement as well as where she sees the movement in five years.
Shot by Zach Weissmueller and Jim Epstein. Edited by Paul Detrick. About 5:30 minutes.
Held each July in Las Vegas, FreedomFest is attended by around 2,000 limited-government enthusiasts and libertarians a year. Reason.tv spoke with over two dozen speakers and attendees and will be releasing interviews over the coming weeks.

Between Two Card Tables with Matt Welch
Is this a special episode of Property Virgins?
0:44 - Nancy Reagan drives her scooter past as Bernard talks about school choice as an extension of the civil rights movement.
Which, by the way, is going to have to get past the teachers unions' Stand in the Schoolhouse Door.
Reason TV: Matt Welch hotwires a Hoverround chair and cruises the Vegas Strip.
I was hanging out with some friends of my gf who are black and the subject of school vouchers came up. They hated the idea. I asked them why when it would give poor black kids a chance to go to the rich white school. They just said it was some dumb republican idea so, no, just no.
What do you say to that? Unbelievable stupid.
Forced busing! Make the rich white kids go to the poor black schools.
Neutrinos Travel Faster Than Light, According to One Experiment

OMG spacing!
Fark headline-
Einstein: Nothing travels faster than light. New experiment: Not so fast, Einstein.
Nice. 🙂
Screw your universal speed limit, Einstein! Warp drive here we come!
Hey, look. Actual science instead of consensus.
You call it science, I call it spineless dithering amongst the Bunsen burners. Cowboy up, Poindexter, and admit Einstein was no Einstein.
I understand his hesitation. Einstein has been pwning sucka MCs for decades. Courage is working through the fear.
I'm moving faster than light right now.
When?
Red Wings 2
Penguins 3
No thanks to you.
No thanks to you.
How do you know that I'm not Geno Malkin practicing my English by insulting trolls on H&R?
That's true. You are pretty inconsistent here.
I've been plagued by injury.
I can't hold this comment section up by myself, I need a world class winger.
I've been conditioning all summer and had a great commenting camp; next month you'll all see the world class poster that you expect.
Sorry, I just experienced a paradox. What were you saying?
Don't turn into a lizard and mate with your captain.
People always ask why can't our education system be as awesome as those in Finland or Sweden?
Well, both those countries have merit pay for teachers and school choice.
What you mean the Swedes are a bunch of fundie right wingers?
TEaching kids to read is one of the hardest things to do, ever, in the history of the human race.
If only Reason wasn't too cheap to hire a guy who knew a thing or two about Swedish social policy. Instead we get Riggs' expertise on Central Florida trailer parks. Well, only if he wakes up in time.
Also in the Netherlands and Belgium too, I think.
Belgium doesn't have a government. How can they have schools....or roadzzzzzzz.
Do-ability factor of interviewee: High to extremely high.
Word. She has a pretty smokin' publicity photo on her Wikipedia entry, too.
That was great, right up to the very last sentence. Joe Johns? WTF?
She's smiling with her eyes...mmm..mmm.mmm
Thaddeus McCotter already dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Romney. Looks like the establishment is leaning on as many people as they can to get behind him. Ya think?
So I can hate The Rom! more?
Honestly, he puts off the same vibe of plastic hucksterism as John Edwards.
Welcome back, McCotter.
How much did you pay for muffins at this conference, Welch? I don't want my $25 Reason contribution going toward you stuffing your face.
Well done, sir.
Early in the video she says the quality of your education is dependent on your zip code. At the end she says something about the power of the teachers unions. Normally we blame the government monopoly on consistently crappy performance. Is there some mechanism by which teachers unions simultaneously make high income schools about as good as any in the world, and low income schools about world average?
I think Michelle doesn't understand the difference between correlation and causation.
I'm pretty sure that if you took the student body from the richest school in your metro area and swapped it with the student body of the poorest school in your metro area, the students originally from the rich school would still kick the shit out of the students from the poor school. The margin of victory might be reduced from 98-40 to 96-42.
A good teacher is useful, but their influence is marginal compared to the student's/family's attitude. One of the biggest scams perpetrated in our culture is that education is about teaching rather than learning.
I agree. I just wanted to see if anyone could offer a plausible explanation. I ask this question in real life too, and nobody ever has an answer. The only explanation is that people who make these arguments are idiots or liars.
"We could not sweep it under the carpet because that would be dishonest."
"You'll never get anywhere in life with that kind of attitude, Son."
McCotter Calling it Quits

Endorses Romney.
Damn you Joe M!!
Hey everyone, guess what. Congressman McCotter? He's totally dropping out. Heard it here first.
Shocking!
I wonder who he's going to endorse? No way it's Romney, they have a blood feud.
Oh how it burns!!!
Who the fuck is McCotter?
Am I severely malinformed if I don't recognize this name?
No idea either. Must be the Ron Paul of the presidential hopefuls.
Where's Mr Kotter when you need him?
