Obama Even Disappoints Frederick Douglass: Ranks Preserving Union above Ending Slavery
In an otherwise bland clip for supporters, President Obama chooses a strange example to support his case for political compromise: Abraham Lincoln's compromise with Union-allied slaveholders in the drafting of the Emancipation Proclamation:
Obama says:
[Lincoln's] first priority was preserving the Union. I've got the Emancipation Proclamation hanging up in my office. And if you read through it, turns out that most of the document is – those states and areas where the emancipation doesn't apply because those states are allied with the Union, so they can keep their slaves. Think about that. That's the Emancipation Proclamation. Right?
So here you've got a wartime president who's making a compromise around probably the greatest moral issue that the country ever faced because he understood that right now my job is to win the war and to maintain the union.
Well can you imagine how the Huffington Post would have reported on that? It would have been blistering. Think about it. "Lincoln sells out slaves." There would be protests. They'd run a third-party guy.
I don't worry too much about the misuse of history, because, you know who else worried about the misuse of history?
But this does make you wonder why, if Lincoln's compromise on emancipation is an honorable act, Obama, who doesn't seem like a wartime president but is at least a kinetic-action president, can't even compromise on unpopular bailouts for decrepit industries, unpopular prosecutions of peaceful citizens, and an increasingly unpopular health care payout for the industry's biggest bigshots? I mean, if it takes a great compromiser to end a civil war, what does it take to pass a budget in less than two years?
By the way, I don't believe Lincoln's compromise on emancipation was honorable, and it certainly wasn't the kind of moral flexibility in the service of a strictly institutional goal (preserving the union) I want any president emulating. You could make the case that the Emancipation Proclamation justified the Civil War by creating a situation where the freed people of the rebel states were now at odds with their own governments and thus the Confederacy had no legitimacy, or something like that. You could say Lincoln was unable at that time to get his goal of total liberation and had to make a compromise within his own coalition.
Instead, Obama applauds Lincoln for trading away the moral goal (ending state-sponsored slavery) in the pursuit of strictly procedural goals (maintaining the geographical integrity of the nation-state; winning a war) that have no moral weight.
Lincoln's insufficient fire for emancipation was more than just political pragmatism. It was a central flaw in his presidency, and there's still a lot of argument about how much Lincoln considered emancipation central and how much he had to be argued into that position.
Because Frederick Douglass was a better writer than Lincoln, and because the Woodhull/Douglass ticket may have been the only presidential option worth voting for in the history of this country, here's Douglass arguing for the centrality of real emancipation – including in Union-occupied and border states – in an article from May 1861:
Fire must be met with water, darkness with light, and war for the destruction of liberty must be met with war for the destruction of slavery. The simple way, then, to put an end to the savage and desolating war now waged by the slaveholders, is to strike down slavery itself, the primal cause of that war.
Freedom to the slave should now be proclaimed from the Capitol, and should be seen above the smoke and fire of every battle field, waving from every loyal flag!

We are often asked by persons in the street as well as by letter, what our people will do in the present solemn crisis in the affairs of the country. Our answer is, would to God you would let us do something! We lack nothing but your consent. We are ready and would go, counting ourselves happy in being permitted to serve and suffer for the cause of freedom and free institutions. But you won't let us go. Read the heart-rending account we publish elsewhere of the treatment received by the brave fellows, who broke away from their chains and went through marvelous suffering to defend Fort Pickens against the rebels.—They were instantly seized and put in irons and returned to their guilty masters to be whipped to death! Witness Gen. Butler's offer to put down the slave insurrection in the State of Maryland. The colored citizens of Boston have offered their services to the Government, and were refused. There is, even now, while the slave- holders are marshaling armed Negroes against the Government, covering the ocean with pirates, destroying innocent lives, to sweep down the commerce of the country, tearing up railways, burning bridges to prevent the march of Government troops to the defence of its capital, exciting mobs to stone the Yankee soldiers; there is still, we say, weak and contemptible tenderness towards the blood thirsty, slaveholding traitors, by the Government and people of the country. Until the nation shall repent of this weakness and folly, until they shall make the cause of their country the cause of freedom, until they shall strike down slavery, the source and center of this gigantic rebellion, they don't deserve the support of a single sable arm, nor will it succeed in crushing the cause of our present troubles.

Jesus F. Christ, Cavanaugh really isn't going to take down the fucking Emancipation Proclamation down a notch or two, is he?!
You know, if that came in poster form and lacked the strategically placed coat and tie...
So that I can blow wads and wads of jism on Obama or Frederick Douglass's face?
Either one, silly man.
Adolescent thread ahead. Use caution. Slippery when wet.
So Obama, a grown-ass man, had to get his hands on the *original copy* of the Emancipation Proclamation to realize he wasn't the first douchebag to be president.
And he won't be the last douchebag to be president... if we have many more presidents, that is.
So Obama, a grown-ass man, the renowned constitutional scholar had to get his hands on the *original copy* of the Emancipation Proclamation to realize he wasn't the first douchebag to be president.
FIFY
It's not THE original copy, it's AN original copy.
Is anyone else kinda surprised when they read these old historical documents and realize just how far our education system has fallen?
I mean, goddamn, people could really write back then.
Bingo,
That's some high-quality, anti-union Koch-sucking you're doing right there.
Don't me squat in your living room with my protest signs until security kindly asks me to leave after the 20th day and I then decide to leave because, quite frankly, even I'M getting sick of MSNBC's desire to stroke my dick and/or tickle my twat.
Just think of how much more successful he would have been with access to standardized testing, regimented classrooms, and an army of bureaucrats sponsored by oodles of federal funding...
The mind positively boggles
lincoln didn't even go to law school. he studied on his own.
the ABA etc. would not approve
I thought we were talking about Douglass' writing...
i thought it was both. the article references the emancipation proclamation extensively.
It's true in both cases. Neither Lincoln nor Douglass had any sort of interaction with a state-run school system (as we know it) and both of them would be considered to be "disadvantaged" children by today's standards. Hell, Douglass wasn't taught to read until he was 12.
Most public school teachers aren't as erudite as either.
Douglas didn't even have a teacher. Ambition and brilliance alone educated that man.
So?
Doctors didn't go to med school either. Apprenticeships were a totally different deal then.
Other than Dunphy's statement, the subject wasn't really law school, daffy. It was the comparative worth of a non-State sponsored education.
You can't even follow the subject, how can you possibly be in the argument? No wonder you are reduced to calling your opponent "little boy" and referencing ass-rape.
God, you are a jackass.
His comment: lincoln didn't even go to law school. he studied on his own.
His point: He was a self-educated man
My point: So was fucking everybody fucking else, you stupid fucker
Rectal Fly
Well, let's see. The conversation opened with this:
Then followed 7 nested comments, only one of which mentioned law school, before you puked on the page. Furthermore, there are two people mentioned by name, only one of which was trained or licensed as a lawyer.
But, yeah, I'm the dumbass. You didn't adresss the self-education issue, although you might have thought you did. You pointed out that physicians and lawyers were trained through an apprenticeship rather than through college courses as they are now.
I'm starting to think that whoever mistook you for a dude was on to something. The social ackwardness, the inability to realize that others really aren't interested in you, the outbursts of non sequitors and almost Turretts-like vocabulary.....the ratio of Asperger's diagnoses in males to females is about 10:1.
Perhaps you're actually a self-hating transsexual...
One more time:
His point: self-education = Lincoln's expertise.
My point: self-education was irrelevant to apprenticeship.
You stupid ass, apprenticeship = college education.
Your parents or guardian 'sold you' into apprenticeship and you worked under as master whatever the fucking field was, and then your papers were released to practice law, carpentry, medicine on a pre-agreed period.
Go ahead and fantasize that I'm transsexual, you little boy. I'm wearing my lace bra I bought in London, and black panties; does that help?
maybe...
my statement wasn't about law school qua law school. it was that when speaking about the eruditeness of lincoln etc. and commenting on how our education system has fallen, an understanding that lincoln's legal acumen was obtained primarily through self study and apprenticeship helps clarify how *he* and many others of his era got to where they ended up
One more time:
His (and every one else's) point: self-education (including the self-education that occurred long before he ever took up a law book)= Lincoln's expertise.
Your off-topic point: self-education was irrelevant to apprenticeship.
My point: Your comment was off-topic and irrelevant to the conversation. Which caused spittle to form on your chin.
Furthermore, I am pretty sure no one "sold" Lincoln into his law apprenticeship. You ignorant, metaphysically hideous, verbally abusive, blog-whoring troll.
"I'm wearing my lace bra I bought in London, and black panties; does that help?"
It will help immensely with my diet.
Your too slow for me to play with.
*you're*
Take another hit off the pipe, and keep muttering that to yourself. You're a bitch, but you're MY bitch. heh heh heh...
fuck off and I don't drink, use drugs, or do a Dennis either
More or less, yes. You don't even have to go that far back. Listen to a speech by Eisenhower or Kennedy sometime. They are wildly sober and errudite compared to the crap that is spoken by politicians today. We live in a barbaric age.
Are you serious?
Let me be clear, um you know, we've got to, you know, start getting the car out of the ditch that, um, the republicans put us in. And, all they are doing, you know, is standing there drinking a Slurpee.
Those Slurpees are just shaved ice mixed with SUGARY DEATH, and I will make it my mission to rid the world of such evil.
Where my cheeseburger at?
God Bless America? I say God damn America!
Fuck black people, I went with Reagan.
Them Hymies done got to you and convinced you that you wasn't black, but that you was white.
It's egregious. Preposterous. Outrageous.
It ain't that fucking hard to choose the winning side.
Not with the Hymies running the world's financial markets and conspiring to keep blacks down with the help of the white devils.
Sssh! I can't hear the Reverend over how fucking rich and successful I got!
If you don't give us some of that cash, you're a sellout.
You got the right one baybaaaaaay
I always wondered Ray: How'd you find a vein?

I sure hope those villages are within 24 miles. Otherwise, you won't make it.
Anti-intellectualism powered by crass populism is the main fuel of this barbarism. Now, who is it again that, these days, tends to make fun of nuance and complexity and good rhetoric?
Some say our opponents care more about tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires but I know that their real motivation is racism.
Nuance, Barry, Nuance. No higher calling than the presidency.
There's that fag talk we talked about.
They are wildly sober
Does not compute.
I mean, goddamn, people could really write back then.
No not people. In the era before radio and TV better writing won elections.
Lincoln was not only a physical monstrosity he was a physical monstrosity that used his writing skills to get elected.
He was exceptional...not simply "people.
That photo is always so awesome to look at. He looks ready to kick some ass.
I bet it's what Zachary in The Omega Man looked like before he became fully infected.
Obama?
OH! No - got it....
Frederick Douglas would eat Obama's skinny dumb ass for breakfast.
Somehow, John, someone, somewhere, could take what you just said and call it "racist".
Real classy. You think because they're both black that they're cannibalistic? a bunch of animals from the jungle?
RACIST!!!!!!11!1!1!!ONE!!
But if he's a black man who only eats other blacks, wouldn't that make HIM the racist?
Took you seven fucking minutes, "Reverend".
Been paying child support?
Been lining up a new hootchie. Sings in the choir. Lips like a koala...

I should get that image printed on a few dozen shirts. I don't see Che branders loitering the streets as much as I did in the early oughts, but just in case I do, I can whip out the Doug-fro Supreme, and say, 'here kid, trade up. Way cooler.'
Here you go:
Douglass T-Shirt
Douglass makes Walter Williams look like an Obamanaut. Damn, that guy *got* it.
Also makes me wish they'd have given Cyrus a beard in The Warriors.
"I mean, if it takes a great compromiser to end a civil war, what does it take to pass a budget in less than two years?"
I think there's something important that's getting lost in the shuffle...
The House has passed a budget. The House passed a budget on April 15.
We should stop forgetting that FACT.
The Republicans in the House passed a budget more than three months ago! Why haven't the Democrats moved on it from there?
Obama should be bearing more of the brunt for his absurdity--blaming the Republicans for inaction? When the Republicans are the only ones who've actually DONE something on the budget!
Precisely. The House passed a budget. The Senate and Pres have subsequently done fuck all. Except "demagogue" [sic] the issue.
The extent to which the American Public? buys El Presidente's bullshit corresponds roughly to the amount the nation has slid down the slippery slope. Which, unfortunately, I believe is "quite a bit".
I don't think we should hold our breath 'til the press starts pointing out the obvious either...
Every time Obama opens his mouth on this issue, he lies by omission.
The Republicans passed a budget. If the Democrats want to vote against that budget in the Senate? It's a free country! They can do that!
If the president wants to veto the budget that the Republicans in the House already passed? He can do that too! It's right there in the Constitution.
I think the budget has to pass both houses of congress before the president can Veto it.
Here is a helpful video to explain the process:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEJL2Uuv-oQ
I understand that.
So why hasn't the Senate voted on it yet?
Could it be--because the Senate is controlled by the Democrats?!
The Republicans have done everything they can to pass a budget--including actually passing a budget in the House.
If the Senate refuses to vote on it--because Democrat Harry Reid is in charge over there? That's not the Republicans' fault.
If they Democrats in the Senate want to bring up the budget the Republicans passed in the house--and vote against it? That's their prerogative!
But sit back and whine and moan about how the Republicans aren't working to pass the budget--they're the only ones who've actually done anything to pass a budget!
If, for some reason, the budget the House already passed in April gets passed by the Senate? Then Obama can veto it if he wants--that's his prerogative too.
I don't know what the procedure is for the Republicans to bring that budget that passed in the House up to a vote--as the minority party? But they should be fighting like mad to get that done--and/or denouncing the Democrats for refusing to let them vote on it.
Other than that, the Republicans have already done everything they can do--and the Democrats have done nothing but obstruct.
And that's not an opinion; that's a fact.
The answer is that DC is full of politicking shitheads that care far more about whatever games the politicking shitheads play than the state of the economy or the fiscal solvency of the republic.
You really think the red team cares about the budget more than their next electoral cycle?
I mean, if it takes a great compromiser to end a civil war
Ahhh, nothing says 'political compromise' like 'civil war.' The terms are practically synonymous! And making compromises in your own little coalition doesn't metaphorically apply for the Barrybama in the context he seems to think. Biden keeps his toy trains...just like Maryland keeps its slaves. So what?
Yes we can!
The Confederacy will rise again! We ain't lost. We re-groupin'!
See??? THIS is what EVERY RepublicanteabaggerBushfascistwingnut is about! JUST like this!
Verbatim, even!
McCornbrew
That is racist to the proud men of Cornwall!!!
Also most Cornish came over the Atlantic well after the civil war.
Now when Bachman signed the family pledge or whatever the hell it was that made the simple factual statement that even under slavery more black children grew up in two parent homes than today, the Obamabots informed us that no one had any right to comment on slavery. That it was off limits and anyone who mentioned it had lost the argument. So is Woopi Goldberg now going to tell us how tired she is of people commenting on slavery now?
Come on, John. Stopping thinking rationally. You can't think of politics in rational terms. Think of it like sports. Your team...we'll call it Team Red...is playing my team...which we'll call Team Blue. Now, in sports, which is a zero-sum scenario, the objective is to win. Of course, in sports, referees maintain order through the fair application of rules. However, there are no refs in politics. In politics, you play dirty.
Now, in sports, which is a zero-sum scenario, the objective is to win.
What the fuck????
Damn...someone noticed.
What's this "winning" stuff all about?
Does being a faggot college activity count as a sport?
Nope.
What? Dude, I'm so baked. Who won the game?
Boy, you have smoked yourself retarded, haven't you?
So, like, when we drink beers and eat back-bacon and go back on the ice and start sweeping, that's a sport, eh?
Why are we less popular than the WNBA? THAT is a fucking good question, yo.
as howard stern said : Lesbians = ratings
I doubt he's ever been to a Comets vs Sparx game.
*shudders*
...made the simple factual statement that even under slavery more black children grew up in two parent homes than today..."
Any candidate that isn't smart enough to avoid unnecessarily making problems for themselves when they're running for office--probably isn't qualified to be president.
She's lucky the president she's running against is less qualified than she is.
Now when Bachman signed the family pledge or whatever the hell it was that made the simple factual statement that even under slavery more black children grew up in two parent homes than today, the Obamabots informed us that no one had any right to comment on slavery.
You don't have to think no one has a right to comment on slavery to think that's a stupid and offensive thing to say. It's like saying Jews had more communal spirit when they were locked up in concentration camps.
Even leaving aside the brain-shutting-off nature of the topic, that statement implies that slavery would be expected to cause slave children to be less likely to live in the same home as both their parents. (I'm being generous here converting "two parent home" to "home with both parents", considering there's very little resemblance between our modern concept of two-parent homes and the reality of slave life where one happens to share quarters with one's parents)
Then how is Obama's statement any less offensive? Oh he is on your team that is why. Thanks for clearing that up Tulpa.
You've got to be on some really powerful bud to think I'm on Team Blue. What Obama said was stupid but doesn't push the outrage buttons like the pledge that Bachmann signed.
If I were a Bachmann supporter I'd claim that she probably didn't read the thing in detail....that's the only way she's getting out of this.
I don't see any difference in outrage between the two statements. You only think Bachman's is more outragous because you are on Obama's team.

My gift to dunphy:
Officer by OpIvy
sounds like a mediocre rancid rip-off with maybe a little specials influence
rancid are ok, but kind of derivative themselves... but i digress
... lol.
Two members of Op Ivy went on to form Rancid.
wow. i impress myself... sometimes
Officer is not really one of my favorites by them. Yellin' in My Ear is much better from that EP, and Sleep Long is a classic.
Never had much use for Rancid though...
Victoria Claflin Woodhull agreed with Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann:
"[t]he rights of children as individuals begin while yet they remain the foetus"
You might convince me at 8 months and 30 days. But I refuse to give rights to the blastocyst.
I had to bone up on my medical terminology. I thought a blastocyst was what comes out when someone puts something in poster form and takes away strategically placed things....
Like in Major League with the owner?
I've had it with this nickel and dime stuff! I'm gonna get that bitch on the phone!
It is very bad to steal Jobu's rum!
VERY BAD!
Up your butt, Jobu.
Yo, bartender! Jobu needs a refill!
"give rights"?
Damn, dunphy (of all people) calling you out on the language. Hate to agree, but he's right. Rights are not "given".
yes, me of all people. somebody who cares intensely about rights.
i'd say "fiercely" not intensely, but i see how that worked out with obama! 🙂
You may care deeply about rights, but you are fighting on the front lines for those people that see our rights as the primary obstacle for their vision.
no, i'm not. i am fighting on the front line for victims of crime, generally speaking. here's a hint. we MOSTLY deal with victims. and i see the terrible result of criminal behavior.
a very large other %age of what we do is frankly mediating some small disputes (although they often aren't small to the participants when it's quality of life neighbor issues etc.) etc.
like a neighbor who was fed up with their fuckstick drunk asshole neighbor who went as far as climbing halfway up their chain link fence and threatened their kid. so, i helped them get a protective order.
or the distraught guy who had already tried to kill himself ONCE (via firearm) who we managed to talk out of the house and he was thankful for a trip to the hospital to see an MHP etc.
contrary to the leftwing meme, our job is not protecting evul capitalist oppressors from the proletariat hordes
contra the reason meme, it is not what you think either.
if you are proud of what you do and can look yourself in the mirror each morning knowing that you are making the world a better place, then keep doing it.
yawn
Wake me when you start holding your fellow officers to at least the same standard as you hold us proles. Until then, the "good" cops are more of a problem than the "bad" cops.
Then maybe I won't crack a smile every time I read about a cop getting killed.
ok, now THAT is a troll attempt "Then maybe I won't crack a smile every time I read about a cop getting killed"
i mean seriously lol, and i say that as a cop whose best friend was shot in the head and killed by a BGD fuckhead
You sound like you care a lot about justice, which is really a good thing.
The problem is that your job has nothing to do with morality or justice, your job is to enforce laws. Many of these laws are unjust or immoral. Many of these laws are created by people that see rights as an obstacle. They don't care about justice or morality.
Your job is to enforce these laws. Since you voluntarily signed up to enforce these laws, I question your commitment to the idea of "rights" and to liberty.
Civilization needs people to put their lives on the line to assist those in need, to enact justice, and to protect those that need protecting. The problem is, your line of work isn't about that.
Killing people, hurting people, and stealing from people is Bad. If our laws were about that, I would see no problem in what you do. Unfortunately, our laws direct punishment to actions far beyond those categories.
And your job is to enforce those laws.
saying a cop's job is to enforce laws is a gross simplification. the vast majority of what we do is NOT enforcement of laws. as a libertarian, you naturally look at it from that angle because you are concerned about state power etc. as am i.
but people call 911 because they need help. laws are a framework in which society (see the whole social contract) sets uniform limits on behavior, but cops are not automatons going around doing the judge dredd thing and just applying laws.
that's just a gross simplification and frankly, a relatively small part of a cop's job
we can both agree many of our laws are unjust. groovy
no sentient being can agree with all laws or for that matter, all foreign policy. it doesn't therefore follow that signing up for the cops or the military isn't a very noble thing
again, with this stupid implication that being a cop is inconsistent with libertarianism and justice because SOME laws are unjust. it's just as consistent with libertarianism as being a defense attorney (a job i would enjoy also), a prosecutor, a judge, a MD, etc.- all of whom have to operate under a system with many unjust laws.
rule of law means accepting that there are a lot of shitty laws out there, but that doesn't take away from the nobility of taking fuckhead criminals off the street, helping victims, saving lives, etc.
Dunphy, you seem like a good guy and a very good cop (as far as cops go). But everyone will draw a line somewhere beyond which "just doing my job" is not an excuse. For me, and many other people, arresting anyone for use, possession or sales of drugs, or any other perfectly consensual, victimless "crime" crosses that line.
Now, it is better that people like you be police rather than less thoughtful and conscientious people. And I am glad you keep commenting here despite all of the abuse. But as long as there are many immoral laws on the books, being police will be considered a morally questionable career choice by many.
With Radley B. having left for greener pastures, dunphy is probably doing more than anyone on this site to practically increase liberty, assuming he's being honest about his activities as a cop. Forgive me for thinking your low esteem for him has more to do with his not joining the chorus when this blog turns into a Two Minutes Hate whenever Reason posts about a citizen-cop confrontation where basic facts remain in dispute.
If having a job that puts you knee deep in state-sponsored injustice makes you a statist, then our beloved Ron and Rand Paul are statists of the highest degree, since they're actually involved in the process of making those unjust laws.
But I refuse to give rights to the blastocyst.
It's up to you to give rights now?
Perhaps that would have been better stated as "I do not acknowledge rights for the blastocyst or believe that such rights exist". I think that is probably what he meant.

you know who else worried about the misuse of history?
Mao Zedong?
It's Herstory, you misogynistic pig.
Serious question:
Upskirt Troi or Cameltoe Troi?
Cameltoe Troi,
You could stick your cock in her and the fabric of her uniform would serve as a condom.
Of course, Picard would find the crotch stains a little puzzling.
LWAXANA TROI WAY HOTTER.
STEVE SMITH LIKE OLDER WOMEN. WHAT CAN STEVE SMITH SAY.
Hate to say this, but I gotta agree with you on the Troi girls!
Deanna was hotter than snorting powdered wasabi but she was SUCH a fucking prude (I think the tight outfits were due to Star Fleet Regulations and not a personal choice)! The most kink you'd probably get out of her would be a wake up blowjob on your birthday if you were lucky! Anything more than missionary would probably require tequila and you just KNOW that Riker probably spent the better part of a year sleeping on the couch after he first explained to her what doggy style was!
Now, Momma Troi, she may not be as young and tight as her daughter but that woman is the patron saint of the Cougar! The kind of girl who wakes a guy up by impaling her starfish on him on any day that ends in the letter "y"! S&M, gangbangs, asphyxiation or whatever the ships computer can dream up; she'll do it all with a grin and what's more she'll show you the proper way to do it!
God didn't make Viagra to please women like Deanna, he made it so men could SURVIVE cougars like Lwaxana!
I'll thank you not to talk about my wife that way.
ok, sgt.
Why the hell is our British accented Frenchman giving a rambling speech about dirty camel toes and proper use of the ships laundry?
God only knows why they either didn't just fucking give him an English name or gave Picard an English mother or something.
WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY THINKING?!
A query, Commander. What would the toes of a desert dwelling animal from Saharan Africa on the planet Earth have to do with the ability to see Counselor Trio's pooter as she alights from her seat adjacent to the Captain?
Are we really discussing this? Really?
This is why we would have never worked. You don't know when to shut your fucking mouth!
Human/Betazed pussy juice just ain't as sweet as Klingon pussy juice, is it Worf?
What are you guys talking about Commander?
YOU'LL GET NOTHING AND LIKE IT!
*grabs Wesley by the neck and slams him face first into the window*
Hey, Wesley... *snicker* put on this red shirt. You're, uh, gonna lead the away team on the planet full of highly-intelligent teenager-consuming creatures.
Dude! You gave it away!
Don't listen to him, Wes... the planet is full of highly-intelligent teenager-LOVING creatures. And they really like smart, geeky guys in bright red shirts.
Gee whiz. That sounds swell. But if a hot girl tries to fuck me, I'll ask her to throw a football instead because I'm really teh ghey but my mom doesn't know it yet.
Why don't you come with me, Wesley?
Dude! You gave it away!
Don't listen to him, Wes... the planet is full of highly-intelligent teenager-LOVING creatures. And they really like smart, geeky guys in bright red shirts.
Intriguing... the "unnamed crewman" seems to have passed through a temporal causality loop.
Is there pussy juice in this "causality loop", Data?
Captain, I volunteer to lead the away team!
No, Data. No.
And it looks less impressive to me through this hair clip I'm forced to wear across my eyes.
Don't steal my lines, Picard.
*takes long sip of whiskey* Yep... everyone thinks that I fucked Troi right and left. And I did- she liked angled fucking. But I was so drunk that I only remember about 50 of those times.
Plus, I was WAY too busy with the guest and costars. That asshole Stewart always wanted to do it as part of a doubleteam... I just think he wanted to see my dick.

That temporal loop is starting to spread just like that rash Data gave me!
Electric Gonorrhea; the noisy killer!
Tasha, I've got a cream that'll clear that up in a few days. Just rub it on your balls three times a day and you'll be right as rain before you know it.
I normally hate novels based in the Star Trek and Star Wars universes because, well, for one, the stories reek of moronic acts of altruism and ultimate sacrifice by red shirts who no one will even recall the name of the next day. However, I came across a two part novel called Star Trek: Dark Passions. Glanced over it, realized the story was set in an alternative evil universe that is pretty much a lesbian matriarchy and had scenes of Troi and Seven fucking, so, of course, I read it. Unfortunately the sex scenes were too under written to get your juices going.
Bitchy plotting with no good guys though. So, not terrible.
The real Data would never have used the word "pooter".
Kirk, however...
I heard that Kirk had "welcome aboard" tattooed on his manhood!
You've found me out, Vulcan. I must now destroy you.
Ewww.
Did I say "when" did Sulu have a kid?
I meant to say "HOW" did Sulu have a kid?
I saw it, Captain. He was given her all he had, but he was lookin' at Chekov the whole time.
Scotty, if you've been peeping on Sulu and Chekov double rail one of my leftovers, then for your own good, QUIT SKIPPING YOUR AA MEETINGS!
Aye, Captain.
[hangs head]
Upskirt Troi or Cameltoe Troi?
April O'Neil plays her in the adult remake of STTNG, so you'll no longer have to decide.
why would a HALF-black, non-descendant of slaves be so proud of having the proclamation hanging in his orifice?
Talk about a strap-hangar
Sexual perversion, libertarianism, and Trekkie go together like blowing wads and wads of jism on posters of Hope Solo.
Make it stop.
Lando Hope?
I'm beginning to think that orgies are the primary attraction of Star Trek conventions.
I'm sorry to have to defend Lincoln here, but he had to compromise on emancipation. The president didn't have the authority to free all the slaves; that required a Constitutional amendment. Freeing slaves in rebel hands was all that he could legally do.
Of course, he could have pressured Congress to pass an anti-slavery amendment, but he didn't. (It didn't come until near the end of the war.) So you could blame him for that.
But the Emancipation Proclamation was stretching the bounds of presidential power to begin with. Taking it any further would've made Lincoln a dictator with the power to ignore the Constitution at will-- kind of like a modern president.
Lincoln was following a legal strategy set out years earlier by John Quincy Adams. Adams had stated that the president could use his powers as Commander-in-Chief to abolish slavery in territories in rebellion.
yea, he might have like suspended habeas corpus or something!
Considering that the Constitution, Article I, Section 9 contains the line "The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it", it was perfectly constitutional to suspend habeas corpus during the Civil War (which was, after all, a rebellion).
The president didn't have the authority to free all the slaves; that required a Constitutional amendment.
Lincoln did all kinds of things that he didn't have the constitutional authority to do.

Sounds like Karl Marx agreed with Frederick Douglass...That makes Douglass a Commie, right? 🙂
Here is Marx in the 1861 attacking the British press for not seeing that slavery is the central issue, and that the North must be supported in the war against the seceding South:

His other essays on the US Civil War are well worth reading as they give real life to the conflict in ways other writers sometimes do not...
[Lincoln's] first priority was preserving the Union. I've got the Emancipation Proclamation hanging up in my office. And if you read through it, turns out that most of the document is ? those states and areas where the emancipation doesn't apply because those states are allied with the Union, so they can keep their slaves. Think about that. That's the Emancipation Proclamation. Right?
Fuck yeah! The President should just do whatever he wants if he knows its the right thing to do!
Fuck the Constitution! Imperial Presidency FTMFW!
I really like Obama. He looks ready to kick some ass.
Really? I can't believe it,I like peace everyday.
More or less, yes. You don't even have to go that far back. Listen to a speech by Eisenhower or Kennedy sometime. They are wildly sober and errudite compared to the crap that is spoken by politicians today. We live in a barbaric age.

otoh, kennedy mentioned god frequently in his addresses, moreso on average than bush did.
liberals who point out that bush mentioned god way too often get really irked when you point this out
Liberals get irked when you hold them to the same standards that they hold others.
They are liars and hypocrites, one and all.
Just as modern politicians are immeasurably more retarded than politicians of decades past, liberals have become more retarded, too.
They don't get irked -- you need functional neurons for that. It's like Walking Dead.
Marc Jacobs bring its brand idea, let their cartoon take lv handbag, classic black and white dot gloves and with Louis Vuitton Bags
Can we stop this nonsense? The Emancipation Proclamation was not a "compromise" between abolishing slavery and preserving the union. It was a wartime measure designed to undermine the Confederate economy and Confederate morale. It was also intended to create a ready pool of union sympathizers in Confederate territory. Further, far from abolishing slavery, it exploited the fact that slaves were property -- by allowing the Union Army to declare the slaves to be "contraband of war," seize them as enemy property, and then exercise its right as their new "owner" to emancipate them.
In other words, Obama's comment about the Proclamation is as inaccurate as Sarah Palin's comment about Revere warning the British. So let's get ready for the weeks of ridicule Obama will receive from the media, late-night talk show hosts, etc. Right?
Lincoln couldn't have emancipated the slaves in the Union states or Union-controlled territory even if he wanted to, due to the Fifth Amendment and the primitive view of the Commerce Clause at the time. Recall that ending slavery required a constitutional amendment.
"Primitive View" if only they had the more advanced view of the clause and read it to mean "the government can force you to do whatever the fuck it decides to force you to do". Yeah. Things were so primative back them. we are so much more advanced now.
As others have noted, the president had no legal authority to abolish slavery. He managed the Emancipation Proclamation under his powers as Commander in Chief, but there was no way he could stretch his power to changing the laws for the Union. (Granted, this probably wouldn't have stopped Obama.)
Wow OK man, that makes a whole lot of sense dude. I liek that idea.

Of course, the compromise on the emancipation proclamation is one more thing that gives the lie to the standard mythology of Saint Abraham going on a holy crusade to free the slaves.
He made offers to the south on multiple occasions, during the war, to let them keep slavery in perpetuity if they'd lay down their arms and pay the tariffs.

Great President
I don't worry
Lincoln repeatedly said that his aim was to preserve the Union, and that if he could preserve it by keeping slavery, he would do that; and if he could preserve it by abolishing slavery, he would do that, too. He put union first because he believed that democracy on a large scale -- of which the United States then constituted the only example in the world -- was being tested. A dissolution of the Union would convince the world that democracy was not a viable form of government.
Obama was not so much praising Lincoln's choice of objective as pointing out that a president cannot settle on a course of action without taking into consideration all the demands -- moral, political, and practical -- that the current situation places on him. Again, a position that would hardly seem to need defending.
As for Douglass and Lincoln as writers -- the former wrote vigorously and effectively, and the latter wrote The Second Inaugural Address.
thanks
